Disney has announced that “Inside Out 2” will begin streaming on Disney+ this month.

“Inside Out 2” was released to theaters on June 14, 2024, and quickly became the highest-grossing animated film of all time. It even broke into the top ten box office performing films, where it sits in the number eight slot, earning $1,675,260,201. The film beat out the 2019 remake of “The Lion King” and 2015’s “Jurassic World.” This gives Disney ownership of nine of the top ten films.

Inside Out 2 was a long-awaited sequel to the original released in 2015.

This film once again takes us into Riley’s mind, now as a teenager. While Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust are back, new emotions take over, including Anxiety, Embarrassment, Envy, and Ennui.

Inside Out 2's Disney+ release date has been revealed. The movie is a sequel to the 2015 Pixar movie exploring the anthropomorphized emotions inside the head of pre-teen girl Riley. The Inside Out 2 cast includes returning stars Amy Poehler as Joy and Phyllis Smith as Sadness, though it also features new characters including Anxiety (Maya Hawke) and Envy (Ayo Edebiri) as well as characters with newly recast voices such as Fear, Disgust, and Riley.

Disney+ has announced that Inside Out 2 will officially premiere on the streaming service on September 25. This release will come just three months and 11 days after the movie's wide theatrical premiere on June 14. This also gives a wide berth to the next Disney+ premiere of a Pixar property, which is the streaming exclusive series Win or Lose, set to debut on the platform on December 6.

While Inside Out 3 is not officially confirmed, Pixar is workshopping some ideas for the threequel. Inside Out 2 is still in theaters and proved to be a dominating force at the box office this summer. It has earned over $1.6 billion already and is poised to continue earning for Disney once it comes to Disney+. Pixar is already working on the four-episode Dream Productions spin-off, but Inside Out 3's confirmation continues to be a subject of anticipation.

While not wholly admitting that the threequel will be entering production, Pixar's Chief Creative Officer, Pete Docter, has been considering the next steps.

Inside Out 2 could have connected with Turning Red through a missed opportunity to make 4*Town Riley's favorite band. Both movies explore themes of puberty in different ways, making them a potential perfect crossover for the Pixar universe. A stronger connection between Inside Out 2 and Turning Red could have simplified the confusing Pixar Universe Theory.

Like any other Pixar movie, Inside Out 2 has Easter eggs and references to other Pixar movies, but it missed the perfect chance to connect to a recent Pixar hit with a 95% score on Rotten Tomatoes. After some challenges due to the Covid-19 pandemic that forced Pixar to release some of its movies on Disney+, the studio has gone back to its normal release plan. After the release of Lightyear and the original story Elemental, Pixar moved on with a sequel to Pete Docters 2015 movie Inside Out, simply titled Inside Out 2.

For any Gen Z readers coming to Scott Pilgrim for the first time: this is a six-book graphic novel series by Bryan Lee O’Malley, in a manga-inspired format and video game-inspired world, about a twenty-something slacker from Toronto and his friends, mostly about how he meets a new girlfriend and has to defeat her seven evil exes, but also partly about his band and some related stuff. The six books all came out in the back half of the Aughts, so I guess they’re core Millennial culture, if you want to generation-type them, but Scott himself is such a stereotypical slacker that this Gen X guy found him and his world instantly recognizable.

One of the newly revealed deleted scenes from Inside Out 2 confirms Pixar was right to cut out one of its anticipated emotional characters. Inside Out 2 managed an outstanding balance to make this work, but its originally planned emotions would have thrown this off.

The Pixar Animation Studios film — which brings audiences back into the mind of Riley as she deals with a host of new emotions as a teenager — has crossed the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office in 19 days of release. That’s the fastest ever for an animated film.

It is the highest-grossing movie of 2024 to date and the only one to cross $1 billion. Inside Out 2 will be one of only 11 animated titles to have ever surpassed the $1 billion mark — and eight out of the 11 belong to Walt Disney Animation Studios or Pixar.

The movie has earned $469.3 million at North American theaters and is up to $545.5 million at international markets, for a total of $1.014 billion worldwide.

Pixar’s Inside Out 2 stayed atop the domestic box office chart in its third weekend with a hearty $57.4 million, enough to scare off Paramount’s prequel A Quiet Place: Day One after a closer-than-expected race.

Moreover, Inside Out 2 is celebrating crossing the $1 billion mark in global ticket sales in record time for an animated film, or 19 days. Inside Out 2 introduced more complex emotions like Anxiety, Ennui, Embarrassment, and Envy, and writer Meg LeFauve recently revealed the other emotions that didn’t make the cut.

In a recent interview, LeFauve said that characters Shame and Guilt almost joined the film, but they were ultimately scrapped.

“We had a fisherman for ideas named Gail, and we went to the Facts and Opinions factory and saw how those were made. And that was super fun,” LeFauve said in an interview with ComicBook. “I think in terms of emotionally, we really tried for quite a while to have Shame in the movie and Guilt.”

Disney and Pixar revealed that several more emotions and ideas were deleted from the production of Inside Out 2. 

While Inside Out 2 introduces new emotions like Anxiety, Envy, Ennui, and Embarrassment, other concepts like Rebellion, Curiosity, Depression, Guilt, and Jealousy were considered but ultimately not included.

These stray emotions weren't the only ones to hit the cutting room floor, with three more confirmed to have been considered for the sequel.
