Biography

    • Gavin J. Konop is a writer, director, and editor born in Upland, California. Fascinated by fiction, Konop often attributes his initial joy to the escapism of storytelling, noting that it offered "a sense of safety and security" when it was needed most.

He attended Rancho Cucamonga High School and was an active participant in the school's TV / Video program led by Matthew Cataldo, who Konop credits for his experience in filmmaking. Gavin built his way up to becoming a leader of the class, often steering the production of school rally videos, sports highlights, and ongoing events on campus. Accompanying him as notable peers in the class were Evan Jackson, Gabe Combalacer, Aiden Saldaña, and Austin Santibañez, all of whom have continued to aid Konop in his filmmaking journey.

He still contributes to the class, often returning to campus and encouraging students who are aspiring filmmakers. He speaks highly of his experience, and his peers have expressed admiration for his growth over the years.

Gavin describes his early high school years as 'misguided' and frequently reflects on them in public recounts. He remarks that his first film was born during a time of heavy reflection, and, according to an interview with the New York Times, he was "going through a rough patch in life - his grades were dipping, and his friendships strained" during his junior year, leading to the creation of his first film, 'Spider-Man: Lotus'. Gavin has explained the discoveries he made as a result of hardship:

"...as I began to discover my philosophies and morals, and started to grow into who I am today, I found that fiction can exist for much more than simple escapism - it can inspire us. It can uplift us. It can place a magnifying glass on the world, and be a guiding light that gives us the power to stand against the difficulties that unveil."

Motivated by a newfound outlook on storytelling, he pursued full throttle on his first movie, taking on the role of writer, director, editor, producer, and even jobs such as visual effects and sound design. Nearly four years were spent on the creation, spanning from January 2020 to August 2023, and it premiered in Los Angeles to over 1,200 attendees at the Million Dollar Theater. Its release was met with divisive reactions online - some critiquing its slow pacing and deviation from the comic book genre, while others commended it for its slow and emotional approach to the character. Konop remains optimistic about its completion, explaining on his Instagram story, "I got to make the movie I wanted, exactly how I wanted to make it. If people didn't like it, I respect it. But I'm beyond satisfied with how it turned out. And I'll always look back on it fondly."

Konop has now pivoted to the indie filmmaking community, where his newest horror-comedy short, "Attempted Murder", has begun its festival run, so far accumulating six awards. The film is expected to release on YouTube in Fall 2025. Additionally, he has produced / directed several other shorts and music videos, and is expected to graduate from UC Riverside in Spring 2026.
