Mehdi Haasan Death Anniversary Special: Talat Aziz On His Mentor
Image
The gorgeous Ghazals of Mehdi Hassan transcend all borders. His most ardent disciple in India Talat Aziz vouches for the borderless appeal of Mehdi Haasan.

Says Talat Aziz, “I first heard Mehdi Saab’s recordings on the radio and then on cassettes in the 1960s. I was mesmerised by his voice, and remained so for the next 45 years. The first time we met was in 1977 in Toronto at a friend’s house. He was wearing a beautifully embroidered kurta and chewing paan. There was a regal aura about him.”

How did Talat come to know his mentor? “Others had told him that I sang well. He told me to sing something, and I was petrified, but I sang. He didn’t say anything. The next day at a private mehfil he took me aside and advised me, “You should not sing yet. Your voice needs to be trained.” He was never anything less than honest.

As Producer Salim Akhtar Passes Away, Subhash K Jha Re-visits The Film That Launched Tammannah Bhatia’s Career
Image
As Producer Salim Akhtar passes away, Subhash K Jha revisits Chand Sa Roshan Chehra.

Nothing about this film about Young Love is young. Jaded and utterly out of step with definitions and dimensions of courtship and romance in the new millennium, Chand Sa Roshan Chehra, released 20 years ago, directed by Shabah Shamsi As produced by Salim Akhtar, represents the most archaic and frozen face of Indian cinema.

In the pursuit to launch the debutant hero, producer Salim Akhtar’s nephew Samir Aftab, the writer Jalees Sherwani fills the plot with every conceivable cliché. Beginning with bachpan ka pyar (childhood attachment) that we’ve seen in puppy-love flicks like Anmol Ghadi and Betaab, the creaking groaning plot takes on the theme of hate-turned-into-love with a family feud, ala Romeo & Juliet, at its bulging backdrop.

What can you say about a film that begins with the juvenile little hero putting a...

Bollywood Denizens On The Importance Of Eid
Image
The three Khan superstars Shah Rukh, Salman and Aamir celebrate every major religious festival in India, be it Diwali, Eid, Christmas or Holi with equal enthusiasm. During Eid, Salman’s home Galaxy Apartment is the brightest in Mumbai. It’s an open house at Salman’s on Eid with guests of every religious order streaming in throughout the day to savour the delicacies that Salman’s mother and the cooks whip up in the constantly-active kitchen.

Food flows. So does good conversation.

Says Shabana Azmi, “This Eid, our house is completely under renovation, and we are living in a small flat, so it’s a very small lunch with only family with full focus only on food. But I did the mandatory badaam cutting for the Sheer Khorma last night like Mummy used to do… I’ve received lots of messages from friends and nieces complaining bitterly that they are...

Pankaj Udhas was greater than just ‘Chitthi Aayi…’
Image
It is sad how ill-informed our media is! The coverage of the passing away of legendary ghazal singer, Pankaj Udhas, demonstrates this lack of information and research. The credit for Pankaj’s fame is attributed mainly to one film song, ‘Chitthi aayee hai…’ from ‘Naam’. The film was released in 1986 by which time Pankaj had become a hugely popular ghazal singer, second only to the veteran Jagjit Singh. But then, Jagjit Singh had a head start.

By 1986, Pankaj had quite a few silver, gold and platinum discs to his credit. These discs were awarded by the music companies on an album achieving a certain milestone in sales. Ghazals were initially a choice of certain discerning music lovers.

But Pankaj had a varied repertoire and his numbers such as ‘Ghungroo toot gaye’, ‘Sharab cheez hi aisi hai’, ‘Chandi jaisa rang’ and ‘Niklo na benaqab’ carried a definite appeal for the masses.

‘Fighter’ Movie Review | Top Gun meets Uri
Image
Siddharth Anand has changed gears for good. He is now riding the action genre with Bang Bang! (2014), War (2019), Pathaan (2023), and now Fighter. Fighter is termed as India’s first ‘aerial action’ film and first instalment in the ‘Fighter’ franchise. The film has references to 2019 Pulwama attack, 2019 Balakot airstrike and 2019 India-Pakistan border skirmishes, which make it more relatable and serious.

‘Fighter’ is about these top Indian Air Force aviators who are brought together in the face of imminent danger, to form a Quick Response Team ‘Air Dragons’. Fighter unfolds their camaraderie, brotherhood and battles, internal and external. As mentioned above, Siddharth Anand seems to be on a success spree with all the right moves. Let’s find out the various reasons why Fighter becomes a decent watch for the patriotic Indians and a ‘must-watch’ for the non-patriotic ones as a warning – ‘Do not mess with us’!

‘Scam 2003’ Review: Gagan Dev Riar As Telgi Shines Bright, But The Show As A Whole Falls Short
Image
When Scam 1992 broke into the Indian Ott space three years ago, the web series scene in this country didn’t have much to offer other than Sacred Games or Made in Heaven. Upon its arrival, Hansal Mehta’s biographical epic on the convicted stockbroker Harshad Mehta not only became a rage among the audience, but it also made people take the Indian Ott space seriously. Three years later, its lead star, Pratik Gandhi, a relatively unknown face back then, is a household name who we regularly see in commercials where the now iconic Scam 1992 intro music plays in the background. Hansal Mehta, already a prolific director at the time of the show’s arrival, is on a career-high after delivering the Netflix thriller series Scoop only a few months ago. Considering all that, the second installment of the Scam franchise, titled Scam 2003: The Telgi Story, is possibly the most...

Before 'Scam 2003', Gagan Dev Riar was supposed to work in 'Scam 1992'
Image
Mumbai, Aug 28 (Ians) Actor Gagan Dev Riar, who is set to essay the role of the convicted Indian counterfeiter, Abdul Karim Telgi in ‘Scam 2003’, was earlier supposed to play the part of Sitaraman, the Sbi manager at the centre of the whole securities scam in the first part of the ‘Scam’ series ‘Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story’.

However, despite being the first choice Gagan couldn’t take up the role because of date issues.

Talking about his connection with the first season of the show, Gagan Dev Riar said: “If not for date issues, I would have been part of the first season of Scam. I was the first choice for the character of Sitaraman, the Sbi manager who was at the centre of the whole securities scam, which was later exceptionally played by Jamini Pathak.”

He further mentioned: “However, at that time I was busy with a project...
