2024 was a great year for Ella Purnell, who garnered nominations for her performances in Arcane and Fallout. The actor says she's thrilled by the response, but she thinks it's time to break away from video game adaptations.
Ella Purnell doesn't want to be pigeonholed into playing video game characters. "I actually think I need to stay away from video game adaptations now, because I'm going to get typecast," she explained (per Popverse). Purnell has an established filmography spanning 14 years; she's proved her acting range in TV's Sweetbitter, Yellowjackets, and most recently Sweetpea. She won over the League of Legends fan base as the voice actor for Jinx in 2021's Arcane, and in 2024, she did the same with the Fallout franchise. Purnell anticipates offers for similar roles now that she's proved her mettle in the genre.

Jackie has been dead since Yellowjackets season 1, but she’s continued to appear since then, and a new trailer has confirmed that Ella Purnell will still be in the show for season 3. Throughout its run, Yellowjackets has ingeniously used its dual timelines to foreshadow major plot events. In season 1, the most shocking use of this technique was teasing Jackie’s dark fate. Jackie didn’t have an adult counterpart in the present-day timeline, so it was obvious that something terrible would happen to her in the ‘90s timeline — but it wasn’t clear what.
In the season 1 finale, Jackie got into a big fight with Shauna and was ordered to sleep outside the cabin. However, the next morning, much to Shauna’s horror, they found that it had snowed throughout the night and Jackie had frozen to death. Jackie’s death caused immense guilt for Shauna throughout season 2, since she was technically responsible,...

Ella Purnell had a huge 2024 as she starred in three hit shows which all received stellar reviews, and some recent announcements suggest her career is continuing in the right direction. Although she had featured in some major projects like Yellowjackets and Army of the Dead before 2024, her Fallout role felt like a massive turning point as it instantly became one of Ella Purnell's best TV shows. Her performance as Lucy MacLean instantly won over audiences, and the video game adaptation surprised everyone with its quality by creating a unique narrative while staying faithful to the source material.
Despite how impressive Fallout was, it wasn't the first time Purnell had excelled in a gaming adaptation, as she voiced Jinx in 2021's Arcane and reprised the role for its second and final season in November. Season 1 set some seemingly insurmountable high standards, but Arcane season 2 managed to match them and provided a fitting conclusion,...

The British black comedy series Sweetpea delivered during its first season in late 2024, and now it is set to return for season 2 soon. Based on the book series by Cj Skuse, Sweetpea concerns an unassuming administrative assistant (Ella Purnell) who unleashes her violent side after the death of her father. Playing on many of the tropes of the female rage revenge subgenre, Sweetpea turns everything on its ear by being shocking while also delivering a lot of morbid laughs. The so-called "coming-of-rage" show was billed as a miniseries, but there was clearly a plan in place to continue.
Reviews for Sweetpea season 1 were overwhelmingly positive, and particular attention was paid to Yellowjackets alum Ella Purnell, who continued her 2024 hot-streak in the leading role. While hardly the first TV series to play around with the idea of a complicated serial killer as its lead character, Sweetpea does so with a whip-smart...

Starz’s dark comedy drama Sweetpea is based on the book series of the same name by English author Cj Skuse. But the TV series starring Ella Purnell isn’t so much an adaptation of the novels as it is a prequel detailing how her protagonist Rhiannon Lewis transforms from a meek administrative assistant who feels invisible into a calculated reporter who uses her job at The Gazette newspaper to throw her co-workers and law enforcement off her trail when her pent-up rage and grief leave a series of murder victims in her wake.
“In the book, she’s really a full-fledged serial killer,” writer and executive producer Kirstie Swain tells The Hollywood Reporter in the conversation below. “You don’t get to see any build-up to that, she’s [already] done it before. So we wanted to tell the story about what brought her to that point, what pushes her over the edge.

Alongside having a fantastic opening theme song, Sweetpea is full of great music that helps give the show a memorable tone, adding to its quality. The balance between comedy and drama can be hard to get right, but Sweetpea's exciting cast of characters helps bring a light-hearted feel to the British drama, while Ella Purnell's Rhiannon Lewis brings some sinister vibes. Despite developing murderous tendencies, Rhiannon maintains her endearing traits, creating a twistedly complicated protagonist. However, these qualities are what makes Sweetpea's reviews so good and the show's excellent soundtrack compliments the action and humorous moments perfectly.
While the series is filled predominately with pop music, the songs are used in a clever way that often conveys an intense and even unsettling atmosphere on occasion. Sweetpea episodes 1 and 2 use these catchy tracks to help build an identity, treating the audience to some bangers in the process.

Is Rhiannon Lewis about to get away with murder? The once tortured wallflower, played by Yellowjackets’ Ella Purnell, has sliced, stabbed, and pushed her way through bullies in Starz’s six-episode drama, Sweetpea. It all started with a rude drunken man in a dark corner, but now Rhiannon has worked her way up to serial killer status. In this week’s season-ender, “Life 2.0,” she fully transforms. “Episode 6 feels like Rhiannon’s true coming of rage,” executive producer Kirstie Swain says. “She’s blossomed into something quite unrecognizable, essentially going from a shrinking violet to a Venus flytrap.” The Gazette’s awkward administrative assistant, who was recently promoted to junior reporter, might have learned how to become a deadly murderess, but can she evade the police who have been searching for London’s latest killer, especially the equally overlooked junior detective Marina (Leah Harvey)? (Watch an exclusive sneak peek of Rhiannon being questioned above.

Rhiannon Lewis is immediately introduced as a ticking timebomb of a character in Starz’s Sweetpea. The series opens with the inner dialogue of the protagonist, played by Ella Purnell, rattling off a list of people she’d like to kill as she feigns a smile in her interactions with said individuals that suggests she might one day make her sadistic wish come true.
Audiences don’t have to wait long. By the end of the first episode, she’s found her first victim in a random man she crosses paths with in the park late at night. His inability to watch where he drunkenly pees is the final tipping point for Rhiannon who’s just come from confronting the woman she blames for all of problems at a club nearby: high school bully Julia Blenkinsopp (Nicôle Lecky).

Ella Purnell's new dark comedy, Sweetpea, is receiving rave reviews, with several different elements from the show explaining why. The show centers around Purnell's Rhiannon Lewis, a girl who suffered terrible bullying while at school before growing up to live a mostly unassuming life in which she is essentially invisible to those around her, as outlined in Sweetpea episode 1. After her life takes several turns for the worst, Rhiannon becomes a serial killer in Sweetpea, taking out her rage on those she deems worthy of receiving it.
This new dark comedy has an intriguing premise that is spearheaded by Sweetpea's fantastic cast. Ella Purnell, of Yellowjackets and Fallout fame, leads the show as Rhiannon. Sweetpea only continues Purnell's TV hot streak, as evident by the strong reaction the show is receiving. From 16 critical reviews, Sweetpea holds an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with several reasons behind the strong reception being highlighted.

Sweetpea's premiere provided the perfect blend of comedy and drama, which culminated in Rhiannon killing her first victim after plenty of build-up. Starz's new limited series centers around Rhiannon Lewis, a seemingly normal and innocent girl whose life quickly unravels, resulting in her becoming a killer. The series is led by Ella Purnell, who has been part of some excellent projects over the past few years and once again delivers a thrilling performance. Her involvement in Prime Video's Fallout is perhaps her biggest role to date, yet Purnell's Sweetpea role is the complete opposite of Fallout's Lucy.
While both characters start out as kind, good-hearted people, Rhiannon doesn't manage to maintain her soft nature. Instead, Sweetpea's cast of interesting characters pushes her further and further down a dark path, leading to her taking her frustrations out on a complete stranger.

Sky’s Sweetpea is a terrific show to add to your Halloween list this year. The dark comedy tells the story of Rhiannon Lewis, a woman who changes drastically after the sudden death of her father. Rhiannon’s always thought herself to be invisible. This terrible feeling sets in first because she’s been bullied from the ages of 12-16, so much so that she starts to pull her hair out from stress and anxiety. Over the years, even as an adult, she struggles to share her opinions with her co-workers or to be able to assert herself. Do you know how the story of a lot of male serial killers begins with one small trigger that messes everything up? Rhiannon’s story runs along similar lines. Soon after her dad dies, Rhiannon’s dog gets run over by a car too. Depressed and lonely, she cries by the canal...

Warning: This article contains Spoilers for episode 1 of SweetpeaSweetpea has finally arrived and Starz's exciting comedy-drama didn't disappoint, as the first episode was full of exciting reveals, including Rhiannon's first kill. The show's trailer already highlighted that the protagonist, Rhiannon Lewis, would turn into a killer throughout the series, but seeing why she took her first life is much more understandable after Sweetpea's premiere. Although there is no justifying Rhiannon murdering a complete stranger, learning about her tough living conditions and insecurities helps explain why she snapped, with Ella Purnell doing a great job of leading Sweetpea's cast of characters by making Rhiannon both sympathetic yet incredibly flawed.
Given Purnell was part of one of 2024's best TV shows in Fallout, it's no surprise to see her put in another excellent performance that makes her character complicated and hard not to root for, despite the awful crimes she is committing.

Is Sweetpea Based on a Book? The Murderous Wallflower Story Explored - Main Image
Considering the prominence of shows being adapted through different original source materials, could this new thriller from Starz be any different? Is Sweetpea based on a book, too? Here's how the vengeful wallflower was created.
Is Sweetpea Based on a Book? Explaining The Wallflower's Original Source Material
The story of Sweetpea follows the nearly invisible girl, Rhiannon Lewis (played by Arcane and Fallout star Ella Purnell), who has never gained anyone's attention her whole life.
Apart from being overlooked by store clerks and men she rides with on the bus, her own boss also seems to completely ignore her existence or potential for a promotion at work.
However, Rhiannon gets "pushed over the edge and loses control", leading her to a transformational journey of expressing her vengeance in the most not-so-healthy way: on a murder streak.

Ella Purnell is hard to ignore. TV Insider spoke with Purnell about her new darkly comedic and suspenseful six-part series, Sweetpea, In the Starz thriller, she pulls off playing someone invisible: the ignored and sidelined Rhiannon Lewis, a receptionist at a local newspaper who develops an intoxicatingly liberating taste for murder. Purnell shares what it felt like shooting Rhiannon’s first kill: “The animal comes out. It’s not something we ever do. It’s not something we’re allowed to do, especially as women where we have to really manage our emotions and be quite careful with what we let out and when we let it out to be encouraged to just scream, to just explode. Sweetpea, the new twisted comedy starring Ella Purnell, debuts with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score that beats Fallout. Based on the novel of the same name by Cj Skuse, and consisting of six episodes, Sweetpea is the latest television project for Purnell following her breakout role as Jackie in Yellowjackets, followed by her starring turn in Prime Video's sci-fi dystopia Fallout. Premiering on Starz as of October 10, the dark adaptation looks to keep Purnell's streak going based on the early reaction.
Sweetpea has debuted with a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The score is based on 6 reviews, breaking down to a 7.60 out of 10 rating. The score is likely to fluctuate as more reviews come in. However, the comedy's strong start has it beating Fallout. If the positive reviews hold, that may continue.

At the start of Sweetpea, the new Starz/Sky Atlantic series adaptation of Cj Skuse’s novel of the same name, Rhiannon Lewis (Ella Purnell) is having a bad life. Ella Purnell is done hiding her own rage.
“In a climate where we’re just getting increasingly silenced, [women] have a lot to say, and the more you try to silence someone the louder, in my experience, you want to scream,” the “Yellowjackets” and “Fallout” actress told IndieWire.
So it makes sense that Purnell’s latest series — and her debut as an executive producer — is with “Sweetpea,” a show that is like the “female ‘Dexter’ meets ‘Fleabag,'” according to the star.
The Starz official series description bills the dark comedy as a “deviously twisted coming-of-rage story,” something that also resonants with Purnell. And while the “rage” emphasis has been made trendy from creatives such as Taylor Swift to Diablo Cody, “Sweetpea” puts a murderous twist on finding your voice.
Purnell plays Rhiannon Lewis, a woman whose life passes her by…that is, until she finds power in wielding an ax.

Ella Purnell has been having a brilliant year although maybe it would be more accurate to say a brilliant handful of years. From her terrific turn as mean-girl Jackie Taylor in Showtime's survival thriller Yellowjackets to her widely-praised voice performance in Netflix's Arcane and who could forget her holding her own against the likes of Walton Goggins' Ghoul in the first season of Prime Video's Fallout? Purnell is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down, and we're reaping the benefits. Her latest project is the upcoming Starz show Sweetpea, adapted by Kirstie Swain from the book series of the same name; while Purnell's character, Rhiannon Lewis, is a far cry from anything she's ever played before, it also allows her to go the distance in her range by depicting a shy wallflower who finds a new lease on life well, after committing a few murders, of course.

Ella Purnell is only 28 years old but her career in TV and films has featured many critically acclaimed projects. Two of her most recognizable roles are in the TV hits Fallout and Yellowjackets, and despite the gore and bloody scenes, Purnell questions her "scream queen" label.

From Yellowjackets to Fallout and now murderous new drama Sweetpea, the British actor is killing it. But behind all the grisly roles, she’s really sweet ... honest
All Ella Purnell ever wanted to do was write children’s books about magical trees and talking ducks and happy bunny rabbits, and instead here she is chainsawing a man’s head off in a radioactive wasteland. Fallout star Ella Purnell is definitely making a name for herself, and has many fans now that will follow her work. It's not so much "okey dokie," as it is "oh my god, help, she's trying to kill me!" in Fallout star Ella Purnell's new series, Sweetpea. After the first trailer intrigued audiences with a glimpse at this dark comedy, Sky and Starz have finally given the show an official release date, and it's arriving much sooner than you may have expected. Also giving the actress a chance to perform in her natural English accent, Sweetpea follows Rhiannon (Purnell), an often ignored woman with a failing relationship who finds unexpected delight in murder. The six-episode series, adapted from the novel by C.J. Skuse, sees Rhiannon desperately trying to hide her bloody secret from her boyfriend and colleagues.
