One interesting phenomenon often overlooked in the careers of famous musicians like Britney Spears is that they might have achieved even greater success if they had not passed on songs that ultimately became major hits for other artists. Indeed, this is no random occurrence. Several top music stars have turned down songs that could have catapulted their careers or amplified their existing success. A notable example is Prince's decision not to fully release "Nothing Compares 2 U," a song he penned himself. Sinead O'Connor later recorded the track, transforming it into one of the most globally recognized songs ever.
Interestingly, Spears has been on the receiving end of this phenomenon. Notably, “I’m a Slave 4 U” - a standout track from her 2001 third studio album, Britney - was originally written by Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo for Janet Jackson. The song not only became one of the year’s biggest hits,...

When putting together the song, “Piece by Piece,” for the documentary about his life of the same name, Pharrell Williams saw it as a chance explore everything in his life that has led him to where he is right now. “It’s thinking about how everything collectively is your story. If you think about all of the crazy times that you have experienced in your life and all the fun times and all the sad times and all of the momentous time and all the times you were caught off guard by things that just blindsided you,” he tells Gold Derby during our recent webchat (watch the video interview above). He even traces it to the medium in which his story is told in the film. “They’re all piece by piece and it’s very interesting that it’s sort of synonymous with how the Lego world works.”

Lego and documentary are not necessarily two words that you would find together in a pitch meeting for a film. But that’s exactly what director Morgan Neville heard when he was approached by Pharrell Williams to make Piece by Piece, and his response was an immediate yes. Not only was this a way to tell the story of an incredible artist, but diving into a new medium gave both Williams and Neville an opportunity to play in a new world outside of their comfort zones.
Told through Lego animation, Piece by Piece follows the life of Pharrell Williams with interviews from people and artists he worked with during his career. Although Williams was not excited about the prospect of telling his story to begin with, the use of LEGOs allowed him to see himself in a more objective way. This helped Williams come up with an original song for the film,...

“It’s happening,” goes a lyric sung over the opening titles of Piece By Piece. “Yes... It’s real.” Just to be sure, here is confirmation, early doors: yep, this is a real film. We’ve had Lego Movies about Batman, Ninjas, Scooby-Doo. But a music documentary Lego Movie? Made with the full participation of self-described “hybrid thinker” Pharrell Williams, Piece By Piece is a surprisingly sincere and serious film about a sincere and serious artist, some distance from the irony-led Lord & Miller Lego entries. It’s quite a handbrake turn for Oscar-winning documentarian Morgan Neville (20 Feet From Stardom), but it largely follows the standard talking-heads doc template very faithfully. Just in Lego.

Interestingly, Piece By Piece has credited Pharell Williams with the creation of the McDonalds jingle. McDonalds iconic Im Lovin It jingle launched with a global campaign in 2003, and was the companys first attempt at marketing the same message internationally. Im Lovin It is McDonalds longest-running campaign to date, but the jingle wouldnt have reached its two-decade marker without certain musical powerhouses working behind the scenes.
The jingle has certainly left its mark on pop culture, with the five notes alone being synonymous with the fast food franchise. McDonald's cultural rebound was guided by their ability to merge advertising with entertainment, notably by having their Im Lovin It jingle released as a Justin Timberlake single before launching their campaign. Their marketing strategy clearly worked, but the creative credit for the tune has since been largely contested, with Piece by Piece's Pharell Williams story reviving the subject.

Plot: The life of Pharrell Williams, as told through the lens of Lego animation.
Review: Let’s get one thing out of the way first – Morgan Neville’s Piece by Piece would be a conventional music documentary if not for the central conceit: the whole movie is animated in the style of The Lego Movie. It’s an interesting choice which gives Pharrell’s story a glossy twist and likely opens the film up to a much younger audience that would have initially seen a more conventional hip-hop documentary. Indeed, with its PG rating, this is a family-friendly take on the life of perhaps the most influential music producer of his time, although it can’t help but feel like total hagiography at times, with it free of even a whiff of controversy throughout.

As a music producer, singer-songwriter/rapper, and serial entrepreneur with a career spanning three decades and two centuries, Pharrell Williams's genre-redefining contributions to American pop culture can't be fully explored, evaluated, or even quantified in a standard ninety-minute documentary. The bio-doc based on his life and career, Piece by Piece, is everything but standard. Along with his childhood friend, frequent collaborator, and business partner, Chad Hugo, and their collaborative nom-de-duo, the Neptunes, Williams has produced or contributed music for artists ranging from Britney “Princess of Pop” Spears to Justin “Prince of Pop” Timberlake, rap legends Snoop Dogg, Jay-Z, and Busta Rhymes, rock royalty Gwen Stefani, and the "Queen of Latin Music," Shakira. And that’s just a taste of Williams’ unmistakably singular contributions to and influence on the American...

Here’s a challenge for even the most respected and revered documentarians: how do you make your film different than the usual profile/biography? Mind you, there have already been some exceptional showbiz docs this year with Super/Man and Faye. Not to mention the two-part four-hour look at Steve Martin made by this film’s director, Morgan Neville. Is there a fresh way to present the “talking heads” interviews, the “reanactments”, and the archival footage? How about animation, much like the recently lauded Flee? That’s a start, but should it be standard hand-drawn 2-D, or the molded CGI? Yes to the latter, but do it in the Lego brick style since Warner’s let their license lapse. This gives the title a double meaning as Neville examines the life and career of Pharrell Williams, step by step, or rather Piece By Piece.

Piece By Piece Review: Lego Pharrell Williams Documentary Is A Visual Embodiment Of His Song "Happy"
As far as imagination goes, Piece by Piece is visually and creatively spectacular. It marries documentary filmmaking which is very traditional here with a remarkable Lego animation style. When I saw this was a documentary about Pharrell Williams, I was initially surprised. Turning the renowned producers life story into a Lego animated film was ambitious, to say the least. But director Morgan Neville, the team of animators, and writers Neville, Oscar Vazquez, Aaron Wickenden, and Jason Zeldes do a phenomenal job creating something fun with the pieces of Williams life, even if some of those pieces dont all work.

Breaking into the music business, crafting insanely addictive earworm hits, recognizing genre boundaries, starting a streetwear fashion line, wearing properly sized ranger hats — Pharrell Williams has never done anything by the book. The kid from Virginia Beach, Virginia, had always felt like someone who saw (and heard) the world differently than his peers. As a youngster growing up in the 1970s and ’80s, that “he’s so… unusual” tag marked him as a bit of a misfit. By the time Pharrell started creating oft-kilter beats as half of the molten-hot...

If you’re sick of formulaic musical biopics — which is to say, almost all musical biopics — Morgan Neville’s “Piece by Piece” is a breath of fresh air. Pharrell Williams, an artist with more #1 hits than Will Riker and Jack Ransom in a bar fight, has a story to tell about his childhood, his career, and his creative process, and it’s not your typical rags to riches tale.
“Piece by Piece” is an animated documentary, which is not a brand-new concept but it hasn’t been done to death either. Morgan Neville, who won an Oscar for the music documentary “20 Feet from Stardom,” sat Pharrell Williams and his friends, family and artistic collaborators down for extended interviews, and then animated their story using the same style as the various “Lego Movies” everyone loves so much. It’s a charming approach, even if it’s also a huge commercial for toys.

The animated documentary Piece by Piece stars Pharrell Williams and some of music's biggest stars as themselves. Animated in the style of Lego toys and following the style of The Lego Movie, Piece by Piece is a bio-pic documentary that explores the life of Pharrell Williams. The narrative is a largely straight-forward approach to his story, staring in his youth growing up in public assisted housing and building to his massive success in the music industry.

Addressing a packed house at Telluride Film Festival’s flagship Herzog Theater, “Piece by Piece” director Morgan Neville described his Pharrell Williams’ documentary as an “ode to the power of magical thinking.” Told entirely through the unique framing device of LEGOs, Williams’ life story makes an effective case for the American Dream. The elements are all there: teenage Williams is a dreamer with a unique musical gift that comes at the expense of his schoolwork. Raw talent never being enough, some lucky breaks and long hours spent hustling are critical additional ingredients to getting Williams out of the projects of Virginia Beach and into a life of luxury — a life in which sharing studio space with Jay-Z and Justin Timberlake is the norm.
“Piece by Piece” is at its best in this opening act where a young Williams finds his creative voice and races to share it with the world.

Documentarian Morgan Neville unveils the building blocks of Pharrell Williams’ vibrant world in Piece by Piece. Neville crafted two moving music documentaries previously in 20 Feet From Stardom and Won’t You Be My Neighbor, shining light on unconventional performers and society’s often overlooked. For his profile of multifaceted artist Pharrell Williams, Neville pioneers a fresh approach—constructing the biography employing the animated charm of Lego.
The film follows Williams from his childhood in Virginia Beach to his ascendance in the music industry. Designed with Lego’s iconic plastic bricks, Neville fashioned ingenious set pieces, bringing Pharrell’s journey to life. If anyone’s story suits such whimsical translation, it’s Williams—a shapeshifter among creative types, forever challenging expectations. Piece by piece peeks within his synesthesia too—how music elicits vivid colors for Williams.

In Piece By Piece, Morgan Neville (Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, 20 Feet from Stardom) tries to upend the conventions of the celebrity documentary using Lego animation. Yes, you read that correctly: Lego.
Premiering at Telluride before its October 11 theatrical release by Focus Features, Piece By Piece tells the life story of multihyphenate Pharrell Williams through elaborately designed set pieces composed of animations of the popular plastic building blocks. If there is anyone for whom this wouldn’t be a completely strange and off-kilter idea, it’s Williams, whose career has been defined by a buoyant irreverence. Starting with his childhood in Virginia Beach and delving into his wildly successful music career, Piece By Piece reveals, in sweet and inspiring terms, how the producer turned rapper turned singer turned fashion icon has never been one to be boxed in.

Pharrell Williams has always done things differently in his music and his fashion, so why would his movie be different?

Lawyers who represent Pink filed legal paperwork against Pharrell Williams on Thursday, claiming he should not be allowed to register a trademark for his P.Inc. business since it’s too much like, well, “Pink.” The singer, whose real name is Alecia Moore, applied for the “Pink” trademark in 1999 and officially registered it two years later, according to the paperwork which her lawyers filed on behalf of her Lefty Paw Print, LLC business.
“[Williams’] P.Inc Mark is similar to the Pink Marks in sight, sound, meaning and commercial impression,” the filing claims.

Chad Hugo accused his longtime friend and production partner Pharrell Williams of “fraudulently” trying to gain sole control over the trademarks tied to their production and songwriting work as the Neptunes.
As Billboard reports, Hugo’s lawyer filed a legal action in a federal tribunal last week accusing Pharrell and his company, Pw IP Holdings LLC, of trying to register three separate trademarks for the Neptunes without involving Hugo — an alleged violation of the duo’s longstanding agreement to share everything equally.

It was just last week we were celebrating the 20th anniversary of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which catapulted Michel Gondry into the Hollywood system with the likes of Be Kind Rewind and The Green Hornet. After the failure of that superhero tentpole, he retreated back to France, directing a handful of smaller-scale features, the latest of which, The Book of Solutions, gets meta following a filmmaker struggling with the editing of his big-budget project. Gondry is now mounting his return to Hollywood, the details of which have now been unveiled.
Deadline reports he’s directing an untitled coming-of-age musical, which is loosely inspired by the upbringing of Pharrell Williams. Set to star Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Da’Vine Joy Randolph, coming off her Oscar win for The Holdovers, the Universal-backed project is set in 1977 Virginia Beach. Previously going by the title Atlantis, named after the Atlantis Apartments area where Williams was raised,...

Phoenix are keeping their collaboration kick going with a remix of their Alpha Zulu cut “All Eyes on Me” that features unlikely guest Pusha T. Check out the track below.
In addition to Pusha’s verses, the “All Eyes on Me” remix features vocals from Benee and production from Chad Hugo. The band shared their emphatic (and very French) gratitude in a press release: “A huge thank you to le Roi Pusha-t — most played artist in our backstage; to Chad Hugo, who always showed up when we were playing in Virginia, it’s about time we worked together! And to Benee, who worked at light speed to make this happen and added some magic. Merci!!!”
As random of a team-up as it may seem, it is fun to hear Pusha spit over Phoenix’s disco-punk instrumental, before Benne closes out the song with a mellow final verse. The track comes...

Bad Bunny leads the 2022 Latin Grammy Award nominations with 10 bids including Album of the Year (“Un Verano Sin Ti“) and Record of the Year (“Ojitos Lindos”), but can he finally win top honors from the academy? Scroll down for the complete list of contenders in all categories.
SEEBillboard charts: Number-one albums of 2022
The Latin Recording Academy has been somewhat ambivalent about Bad Bunny, judging from his track record over the years. He has won four times, but only in urban genre categories. He lost his three previous Album of the Year bids (for “Yhlqmdlg” and “Oasis” in 2020 and “El Ultimo Tour Del Mundo” in 2021) and his previous Record of the Year nom (for “Vete” in 2020). However, Bad Bunny has emerged as the biggest crossover Latin star in the world. “Un Verano Sin Ti” has topped the all-genre, all-language Billboard 200 albums chart for 11 weeks, which is more than any album in six years.

Right from the start, In Search of… stood out. I discovered N.E.R.D.’s 2002 debut at a Best Buy on the rim of Houston’s I-10 loop, sitting at the front of the store on a blue kiosk marked 6.99. I was a first-year high school English teacher, struggling to pull together all the things expected of me. There was this unfussy album cover staring at me, with a twenty-something Black guy on a battered-looking couch in a nondescript apartment playing a video game in his house clothes, blankly staring at an off-screen TV,...

Lyrics from two songs on Beyoncé’s new album Renaissance were updated as a result of discussions on social media. A verse on “Heated” was altered after activists noted it contained language that has been described as ableist. Then, the singer Kelis shared a series of Instagram posts expressing frustration that her hit “Milkshake” was sampled on the album without her knowledge, describing it as “theft.” Both instances raise questions about the increasing malleability of music as a digital product.
Already, albums from major musicians are often updated with deluxe editions featuring added songs.

Beyoncé is continuing to respond to feedback: the singer removed the "Milkshake" riff interpolated on "Energy," off her new "Renaissance" album, following complaints from the song's original performer, Kelis. In a series of videos leading up to this decision, Kelis said she was not previously notified about the sample and expressed her frustrations with music-industry contracts, issues of ownership, and her splintered relationship with former collaborators Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo of The Neptunes.
As it currently stands, the sample can no longer be heard on streaming platforms, and Williams and Hugo have been removed from the song credits available on Beyoncé's website. This also comes shortly after Beyoncé scrapped an ableist slur, the word "spaz," from the song "Heated."
The issue first began on July 25, days before the release of "Renaissance," when fans got hold of a list of the artists sampled on the album. A Kelis fan page shared said list,...

Late Thursday evening, Lil Nas X took the stage at the Marquis Marriott Hotel in New York City as the youngest honoree of the night as he accepted the Hal David Starlight Award at the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The honor, presented to young songwriters impacting the music industry through original songs, was presented to the 23-year-old artist two-and-a-half hours into the 51st annual induction ceremony. The night may have been dragging on with back-to-back 10-plus minute speeches punctuated with equally long performances, but Lil Nas X wouldn’t keep the audience for long.
