This Day That Year: Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara
Image
Subhash K Jha looks back on 2011’s Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara Zoya Akhtar directed film that featured Farhan Akhtar, Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol, Kalki Koechlin and Katrina Kaif, in this new edition of his fabulous series This Day That Year.

Zindagi Milegi Na Dobara (Znmd) is an exhilarating journey, an inspiring experience, a thought rather than a plot that glides with stunning smoothness and celerity. It has no real beginning or end. Just a series of handsomely and cleverly packaged episodes that are held together by the wisdom of a storyteller who doesn’t try to bully us into being attentive. The sheer inner and outer beauty of the film is enough incentive to keep us engaged till the final marriage before the end credits.

Some movie experiences can be summed up in a few lines. Others can take longer. This one would be hard to define. And to try...

Did Dharmendra Really Reject Zanjeer As Per Javed Akhtar’s Claim? Dharam Ji Once Took Shots, “Dikhaave Ki Is Duniya Mein…”
Image
When Dharmendra Took A Cryptic Dig At Javed Akhtar (Photo Credit – Wikipedia/Instagram)

Amitabh Bachchan starrer Zanjeer is a breakthrough film in the senior actor’s career. It was released in 1973 and is credited for launching Bachchan’s image as the “Angry Young Man” of Indian cinema, a persona that defined much of his career in the 1970s and ’80s. But did you know that part was actually written for Dharmendra? It was written by the incredible duo- Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar.

Javed once revealed that the Dharam Veer actor refused to take on the role for unknown reasons. This revelation reportedly did not board well with Apne star as he seemed to have taken a cryptic jibe at Akhtar after this report came out. Zanjeer is iconic for several reasons; for example, it marked the end of the romantic hero era and the rise of the action-oriented, morally conflicted protagonist.

Sanam Teri Kasam directors Radhika Rao and Vinay Sapru have been basking in the success of the re-release of the film at the box office. It was then that music composer-singer Himesh Reshammiya showed faith in the makers and provided music for the film. Not only this but he also gave the title for the romantic movie.

Be Happy Music Review: Remo D’Souza Film Delivers A Good Album! (Photo Credit – YouTube)

Abhishek Bachchan is all set to impress the audiences with another heartwarming film titled Be Happy. Helmed by Remo D’Souza, the film outlines the relationship of a father and daughter and how they come close through music and dance. The music album of this emotional drama is already out, and to be honest, this one is a mixed bag.

The album has 12 tracks, and it is after so long that a film is arriving with so many good musical notes. Composed by Harsh Upadhyay, the 12 tracks seem to hint at a very good musical drama. However, the songs might not work in their entirety when you listen to them without context.

The Expected Beauties

While you cannot take dance out of a Remo D’Souza film, you can also not take out devotional songs out...

When Aamir Khan & Shekhar Kapur’s Time Machine Movie Was Scrapped Because Of This Reason
Image
Did Aamir Khan shoot a time machine movie? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

The science fiction genre has been one of the most anticipated film genres worldwide. It takes the force of human imagination to its limit and the makers are then challenged to match their wildest dreams with the technologies available, and the results have been mind-blowing. In India, while the genre hasn’t been as prolific, there have been notable attempts to delve into sci-fi narratives.

Aamir Khan’s 2014 film Pk stands out as a successful venture into this realm, which blended sci-fi with humor. However, years before Pk, Aamir Khan had already worked on an ambitious sci-fi project titled Time Machine in collaboration with acclaimed director Shekhar Kapur. This movie was initiated in the early 1990s and promised to be a groundbreaking addition to Indian cinema but unfortunately remained unfinished.

Time Machine was meant to be an Indian version...

Kanappa Teaser 2 Review: Skip The Entire Akshay Kumar – Mohanlal – Vishnu Manchu Part & Focus On 2 Seconds Of Prabhas!
Image
Kanappa Teaser 2 Review: 2 Seconds Of Prabhas Steal The Show! ( Photo Credit – YouTube; Instagram )

The second teaser of Vishnu Manchu and Mohanlal’s Kanappa has finally arrived, and it is all over the place, at least for the Hindi version. In fact, what should have been the savior – Akshay Kumar’s cameo as Lord Shiva stands totally irrelevant and unimpressive!

However, there is still hope since the teaser has one of the best moments for which fans might be waiting. The teaser heavily emphasizes visual spectacle, which raises the question of whether the film will prioritize substance over style. While visual grandeur is important, a compelling narrative is equally crucial.

Kanappa teaser provides a glimpse of a very huge starcast. It includes Vishnu Manchu, Mohan Babu, Prabhas, Mohanlal, Akshay Kumar, Sarat Kumar, Kajal Aggarwal, Arpit Ranka, Brahmanandam, Saptagiri, Mukesh Rishi, Madhubala, Aishwarya Bhaskaran, Brahmaji, Devaraj, Raghu Babu, Siva Balaji, Sampath Ram,...

Revisiting Farhan-Vidya’s Marital Drama, Shaadi Ke Side Effects , As It Clocks 11 Years
Image
Subhash K Jha revisits Farhan Alhtar and Vidya Balan’s Shaadi Ke Side Effects, which released in 2014.

“When I do something wrong, I say sorry to my wife. When my wife does something wrong…. I say sorry to my wife.”

One of the gems that flows out of Farhan Akhtar’s mouth while addressing the oldest question on the gender equation is: What does a woman really want in a marriage? Could it be the same things as a man? Maybe the route taken by the two individuals is different.

Director Saket Chaudhary raises some pertinent questions on the fake road signs that could lead to an aborted marriage. Not all of the winking homilies work. But the film holds together primarily because of the intelligent writing and the sharp and crisp way the two main actors interpret the parts of the two individuals in a marriage that has a lot going for it,...

‘McNeal’ Review: Ayad Akhtar New Play Artificially Grapples with the Realities of A.I.
Image
In the new play from Pulitzer Prize winner Ayad Akhtar, Oscar winner Robert Downey Jr. makes his Broadway debut as Jacob McNeal, a celebrated novelist drinking himself toward liver failure as he desperately awaits the Nobel Prize in Literature he so cherishes. But after he actually wins the prize, rendering his initial moping about not having won the prize irrelevant, Jacob inexplicably abandons his work ethic, devotes his creative energies to running a bunch of classic texts through a chatbot, and slaps his name on an A.I.-generated novel.

Jacob’s also finishing up edits on another tome, this one with a story overly borrowed not from robots but from the women in his life, including his wife whose suicide haunts him. In such moments, Akhtar attempts to interrogate whether plagiarism via chatbot is any worse than regular plagiarism or just lifting stories from real people’s lives, but...

Image
Actress Nishigandha Wad, who essays the role of Haider’s mother Heena in the television show ‘Rabb Se Hai Dua’, has shared that she took cues from legendary actor Irrfan Khan for her part in the show.

‘The Kitchen’ could clean up at BAFTAs
Image
The BAFTAs have a soft spot for home-grown talent. Earlier this year, “Good Luck to You, Leo Grande” scored four bids at the British Academy Film Awards, including Best Actor (Daryl McCormack) and Best Actress (Emma Thompson). Before that, in 2022, Adeel Akhtar snuck into the Best Actor lineup for “Ali & Ava” and Joanna Scanlan won Best Actress for “After Love.”

This pattern of Brits recognizing Brits could bode well for Daniel Kaluuya this year, who makes his directorial debut with the new Netflix drama “The Kitchen.” The film depicts a dystopian London in which all social housing has been eliminated. The focus in the story are the residents of The Kitchen, a community that refuses to leave their homes despite their struggles. At the heart of the film is Kane Robinson‘s (also known as Kano) Izi, who takes Jedaiah Bannerman‘s young boy under his wing and tries...

Indian Web Series ‘Made In Heaven’ Is The Talk Of The Town For Its Powerful Storytelling And An Exceptional Cast
Image
Indian web series “Made In Heaven” is the talk of the town for exploring the opulence and the dogmas of Indian society through seven exceptional stories.

But more than that, the show is applauded for a unique casting – Tinetra Haldar.

Haldar joins the team of wedding planners led by Sobhita Dhulipala’s Tara and Arjun Mathur’s Karan in the second season. Haldar, as Meher, is arguably the first trans woman cast in a recurring role in a mainstream Indian series.

Regarding onboarding Trinetra, showrunner Zoya Akhtar tells Et Canada, “Our casting directors found her on Instagram. She’s a doctor. We didn’t really know if she could act or if she’d want to act. So, we contacted her. She sent us a set of tapes — which we loved — and then we asked her if she could audition with us in person. She did two or three scenes...

Farhan Akhtar Announces A New Don!
Image
Farhan Akhtar took to social media to announce that a new project is in the works! So what will it be? Excitingly, it’s a return to a hit film series.

Audiences have been eager, in fact clamoring, for a third Don film, and we have some scoop – there will be a new Don in town! But there is a twist. Read on!

Akhtar wrote, “In 1978, a character created by Salim-Javed and portrayed by Mr. Amitabh Bachchan with effortless elan, captured the imagination of theatregoers across the country. That enigmatic character was Don.”

With praise for his Don, aka Srk, he continued, “In 2006, Don was reimagined and brought to life by Shah Rukh Khan in his own irresistibly charming way. From Don’s sardonic wit to his cool but menacing fury, Shah Rukh embodied his persona. As writer & director, I had a great time creating not one but two ‘Don’ films with Shah Rukh,...

The Archies: Release Date Speculation, Cast, Trailer & Everything We Know
Image
The Archies movie is one of Netflix's most anticipated movies and the teaser trailer that has recently dropped looks extremely promising. Directed by Zoya Akhtar (Gully Boy) and based on the Archie Comics, The Archies follows the lives of Archie Andrews, Veronica Lodge, and Betty Cooper, who live in an Anglo-Indian hill station in 1964 Riverdale, India. Unlike the popular Netflix series (which is full of wild and dark storylines), the teaser shows that the movie will be a lot more grounded and upbeat, with the plot focusing more on "rock n’ roll," and "love and heartbreaks."

Although Riverdale is ending with season 7, the release of The Archies movie seems to hint that Netflix isn't done with the popular comic books just yet since there are still plenty of storylines they could adapt. If The Archies movie proves to be a success, there's always a possibility that the writers could...

The Archies Cast & Character Guide: Who's Playing Archie Andrews?
Image
The Archies cast features an ensemble of exciting young actors breathing new life into familiar icons. Due to be released on Netflix, The Archies is a live-action musical reimagining of the Archie comics set in India in the 1960s. Archie Andrews and his friends have endured as pop culture staples since the early 1940s. After Riverdale put the characters in a creepy Twin Peaks-style mystery series, The Archies will put them at the center of a sweet, nostalgic, ‘60s-set musical. Based on the trailer, The Archies seems like it will be a delightfully quirky take on the source material.

‘The Archies,’ Indian Musical Based on Archie Comics, Gets Teaser and Debuts of Khushi Kapoor, Suhana Khan and Agastya Nanda
Image
Netflix has unveiled a new teaser for “The Archies,” a coming-of-age, live action musical set in 1960s India based on the teenagers of Riverdale.

“The Archies” is a feature film adaptation of the Archie comics, which are hugely popular on the Indian subcontinent.

The teaser, released during Netflix’s Tudum fan event, reveals that the film is set in 1964 in Riverdale, described on a railway sign as a “hill station,” a term dating back to colonial times that refers to a town located at a higher elevation than the nearby plain. One of the transport links servicing the hill stations are small mountain railway trains running on narrow gauge tracks, known affectionately in India as “toy trains” and the teaser opens with a shot of top train puffing into Riverdale station.

Once in the quaint town, the teaser reveals the iconic Pop Tate’s, a soda shop that Archie and his friends hang out at.

‘Never Have I Ever’ Director Kabir Akhtar Believes ‘The Door Is Open for More’ Indian American Shows
Kabir Akhtar won an Emmy for editing "Crazy Ex Girlfriend" during the 2016 Creative Arts Emmy Awards at the Microsoft Theater on September 10, 2016 in Los Angele
One of director Kabir Akhtar’s first episodes on Mindy Kaling’s Netflix comedy series “Never Have I Ever” was the first episode told from Ben Gross’s (Jaren Lewison) point of view in Season 1.

The show follows Devi Vishwakumar (Maitreyi Ramakrishnan) as she conquers the rollercoaster of high school, the emotions of adolescence and her particularly hot temper, which could flare at any moment. Devi also experiences a classic love triangle between two very different boys — Lewison’s overachieving, nerdy Ben Gross and Darren Barnet’s laid-back jock Paxton Hall-Yoshida.

“I ended up directing both Ben episodes and one of the Paxton episodes, and that first one, one of the things I loved most about it was — you look at it on the surface, and to that point in the show you have this young brown girl as the main character,” Akhtar told TheWrap. “This privileged white kid who...

Javed Akhtar: Pakistani youth wishes to have good relationships with India
Image
“The fact is we are unaware that a huge segment of Pakistan wants to have good relations with India because they see us as a neighbouring country with a lot of development, growing industry and rich culture,” poet & author Javed Akhtar said today.

Speaking at the second edition of the ‘Ideas of India’ Summit, he added, “The love for the nation, city, and school is a natural feeling and there is no bleak doubt in it. It is natural for any individual to love the country they are born in. If somebody doesn’t feel the same way then there is a problem. For instance, in sports, there is a separate anthem for every team and there is always a devotion on their faces filled with love. It is impossible for an individual not to worship their anthem and feel goosebumps.”

Akhtar added, “Being a member of society and country,...

Javed Akhtar's comments in Pakistan compared to surgical strikes
Image
New Delhi, Feb 21 (Ians) Acclaimed lyricist, screenwriter and poet Javed Akhtar’s comments in Pakistan on 26/11 terrorists “roaming free” in the country and the bitterness in the hearts of Indians have drawn huge applause in India.

Akhtar was last week welcomed with thunderous applause at the 7th Faiz Festival in Lahore. Apart from his love for great Pakistani poet Faiz Ahmad Faiz, Akhtar (78) spoke largely about language, both English and mother tongue – be t Hindi, Urdu or a regional one – and the need to give the same respect to all of them.

During an interaction, Akhtar said that Pakistan couldn’t blame Indians for being angry.

The lyricist was responding to the audience saying: “You have visited Pakistan so many times. When you go back, do you tell your people that these are good people, they aren’t just bombing us but also greeting us with garlands and love?”

Akhtar...

Dilip-Saira: A wedding that became the cause of a national celebration
Image
The announcement of our engagement on October 2, 1966, reverberated with sensational and joyous tidings all over the country. It was an indescribable experience. The media was splashing the news all over and the radio stations kept on announcing the event every couple of hours. There was an air of great festivity in Bombay (and probably elsewhere as well) as all available loudspeakers belted out our favourite film songs!

The news of our forthcoming marriage came as a surprise to all those who had thought I was an unrelenting, highly eligible bachelor who would never settle down. My fans and also my friends, such as Satish Bhalla, Raj Kapoor, producer Ved Puri, Hiten Choudhary, Pran and Balraj Kohli, were agog with ‘how did this happen’? Saira’s career was just five years old; we had never worked together and were never linked romantically. Consequently, there literally was a storm in the minds of people,...
