As previously reported, the long-awaited Highlander reboot, starring Henry Cavill as a MacLeod (presumably either Connor or Duncan), has found a new home at Amazon MGM Studios, shifting gears from its previous development at Lionsgate.
Fans eager for a resurgence of the sword-slashing fantasy series can now look towards a potential production start as early as September, with a projected release window in 2027 or 2028.
Director Chad Stahelski (John Wick franchise), who has been attached to the project since its initial announcement in October 2023, recently provided an update to Collider, stating that the Highlander reboot is his immediate priority.
"If everything works out in the next 24 hours, we'll be shooting sometime in September. And in 2027 or 2028, you’ll be watching Highlander," Stahelski revealed. The script for the reboot is penned by Mike Finch.
In a prior interview, Stahelski shared his compelling pitch to Cavill, emphasizing the depth of the character: "My selling point was,...

Over? Henry Cavill is just getting started. And this time, he’s not lurking in the shadows—Sherlock Holmes is ready to steal the scene in Enola Holmes 3. That’s right, the Holmes siblings are reuniting, and this time the game is afoot at a sunny, suspicious island.
Millie Bobby Brown returns as the clever, chaos-stirring Enola, still several steps ahead of her time and possibly her brother (Henry Cavill). After cracking cases across foggy Victorian England, she’s heading into new territory—think sun-drenched secrets, island intrigue, and maybe a dash of scandalous romance.
Behind the camera, we’ve got Philip Barantini taking the director’s chair, as confirmed by Deadline back in November 2024. And guess who’s penning the script? Jack Thorne, the brilliant mind behind the first two films, returns to adapt another tale from Nancy Springer’s sharp and sassy Enola Holmes Mysteries.

The anticipated reboot of Highlander starring Henry Cavill as a sword-wielding immortal warrior has gotten an interesting update. John Wick director Chad Stahelski has been cooking this Highlander movie for nearly a decade, and when Cavill's attachment was announced in 2021 it felt like a match made in heaven. And it still is...whenever we get to see it.
We previously reported that Highlander's 2025 filming start date was delayed. Pre-production on the movie is still underway, but according to Witcher scoop site Redanian Intelligence, cameras are now slated to start rolling later in May 2025. The delays are reportedly because Stahelski was needed for reshoots on the John Wick spinoff Ballerina, while Cavill is filming his live-action Voltron movie. Highlander is slated to be the next project the pair tackle after that. John Wick 4 writer Michael Finch will pen the screenplay.
Now, we've gotten word of another shake-up: Highlander may be changing studios.

"There can only be one!" – and when it comes to the Highlander reboot starring the ever-brooding Henry Cavill and helmed by John Wick maestro Chad Stahelski, that one is now Amazon MGM Studios!
Just a year after Lionsgate touted the return of the beloved '80s action franchise with a splashy CinemaCon presentation, the project has officially switched sword hands, finding a new production haven at Amazon MGM. Sources indicate the move comes as Amazon MGM's vision aligns more closely with Stahelski's take on the immortal saga.
It seems Cavill is becoming quite the fixture at Amazon MGM as the studio/streamer appears poised to setup Cavill as its action franchise king. Not only will he be wielding a head-slicing blade in Highlander, but he's also set to spearhead their ambitious Warhammer 40,000 cinematic universe and pilot the live-action Voltron movie.
Adding another layer of intrigue, Cavill's name continues...

From playing the fan-favorite Witcher to appearing in the Highlander reboot, Henry Cavill seems to be sharpening his sword (and cheekbones), now that the project is slicing its way to a new home at Amazon MGM Studios. Yes, originally set to be developed under Lionsgate’s banner, the reboot has found a new home at Amazon MGM Studios.
But here’s the kicker—Amazon seems to be pulling a classic Duncan MacLeod move and going into double trouble: a movie and a TV show. With the John Wick director Chad Stahelski behind the camera and Henry Cavill possibly playing Connor MacLeod, this reboot seems to be planning on raising the dead (or at least the fanbase).

According to new reports from Deadline, it looks like the immortals have packed their bags and moved to streaming neighborhoods.

There can be only one. Or, in the case of the "Highlander" franchise, there can be only six movies, three TV shows, and a web series, not to mention nine tie-in novels, two comic book titles, a card game, and a video game for the Atari Jaguar.
The mythology of the "Highlander" movies started pretty simply, spinning centuries-old tales of knight-errantry into a modern fable of magical immortality. Russel Mulcahy's 1986 original laid out the rules clearly: hiding among ordinary humans is a species of magical immortals who can only be killed by decapitation. When one Immortal decapitates another, they absorb their victim's life energy, becoming stronger and more exhilarated. The legend goes that when there is only one Immortal remaining on Earth, they will be granted a wish called The Prize. The central Immortal of the series, a 16th century Highlander named Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert), wishes more than anything to grow old.

The Highlander franchise has thrived on television, allowing for a more detailed exploration of immortals' lives and the mythology surrounding them. An anthology series would be the ideal format for the Highlander franchise, as it can delve into the backstories of various immortals and explore different genres. A Highlander anthology series could provide extensive narrative build-up and character development leading to a climactic showdown between the final immortals, ultimately creating a more satisfying movie trilogy.
The 1986 science fantasy movie Highlander, about Scottish immortal Conor MacLeod, is a near-perfect time capsule of American 80s cinema, complete with a 80s rock soundtrack by Queen. After sequels proved less than popular among fans and audiences, the franchise made the jump to television. The 90s French-Canadian production Highlander: The Series introduced a new immortal Scottish swordsman, Duncan MacLeod, and ran for six seasons. The series spawned two animated series, followed by two spin-off movies.

Some Hollywood actors have become genuinely skilled in sword fighting, surpassing the skill level necessary for their roles and using real weapons. Actors like Gwendoline Christie and Kit Harington improved their sword fighting skills while working on "Game of Thrones," becoming practiced veterans. Legends like Basil Rathbone and Errol Flynn were renowned for their sword fighting abilities, with Flynn known for his ability to make fights look real on-screen.
Sword fighting has become something of a common practice in Hollywood ranging from classic swashbuckling pirate movies to epic fantasy television series, however, there are some actors who, over the years, have proved themselves to be genuinely skilled in the art of sword fighting, even when they aren't in front of the camera. The first short story in Andrzej Sapkowski's epic saga was simply titled "The Witcher." It was printed in the Polish fantasy and sci-fi magazine Nowa Fantastyka in 1986, as part of a contest. Sapkowski didn't win the top prize then, but readers were attracted to Geralt of Rivia's struggle to free a princess from an unfair curse. That encouraged Sapkowski, and in 1994, "Blood of Elves" became the first full novel about the mutant monster-hunter's trials. Gradually, Geralt's popularity trickled into the worldwide consciousness, helped along by the 2007 video game adaptation by CD Project.
Geralt's (portrayed by Henry Cavill) first adventure is the third episode of Netflix's "The Witcher." Titled "Betrayer Moon," the myth of the striga becomes a showcase for Geralt's gruff brand of empathy. In his world, monsters can't be allowed to roam free, but when he can, he saves them from their fates. The world of "The Witcher" is often cruel,...

The Highlander films were largely hit and miss, with the seminal original being the only one that has really lived up to its reputation. From its loins came a very unexpected spinoff TV series that won numerous awards, and continued the Highlander story in an alternate timeline from that of the first film. The principal star of the show was Duncan MacLeod, played by Adrian Paul.
