As previously reported, the long-awaited Highlander reboot, starring Henry Cavill as a MacLeod (presumably either Connor or Duncan), has found a new home at Amazon MGM Studios, shifting gears from its previous development at Lionsgate.

Fans eager for a resurgence of the sword-slashing fantasy series can now look towards a potential production start as early as September, with a projected release window in 2027 or 2028.

Director Chad Stahelski (John Wick franchise), who has been attached to the project since its initial announcement in October 2023, recently provided an update to Collider, stating that the Highlander reboot is his immediate priority.

"If everything works out in the next 24 hours, we'll be shooting sometime in September. And in 2027 or 2028, you’ll be watching Highlander," Stahelski revealed. The script for the reboot is penned by Mike Finch.

The anticipated reboot of Highlander starring Henry Cavill as a sword-wielding immortal warrior has gotten an interesting update. John Wick director Chad Stahelski has been cooking this Highlander movie for nearly a decade, and when Cavill's attachment was announced in 2021 it felt like a match made in heaven. And it still is...whenever we get to see it.

We previously reported that Highlander's 2025 filming start date was delayed. Pre-production on the movie is still underway, but according to Witcher scoop site Redanian Intelligence, cameras are now slated to start rolling later in May 2025. The delays are reportedly because Stahelski was needed for reshoots on the John Wick spinoff Ballerina, while Cavill is filming his live-action Voltron movie. Highlander is slated to be the next project the pair tackle after that. John Wick 4 writer Michael Finch will pen the screenplay.

Now, we've gotten word of another shake-up: Highlander may be changing studios.

Sources indicate the move comes as Amazon MGM's vision aligns more closely with Stahelski's take on the immortal saga.

It seems Cavill is becoming quite the fixture at Amazon MGM as the studio/streamer appears poised to setup Cavill as its action franchise king. Not only will he be wielding a head-slicing blade in Highlander, but he's also set to spearhead their ambitious Warhammer 40,000 cinematic universe and pilot the live-action Voltron movie.

From playing the fan-favorite Witcher to appearing in the Highlander reboot, Henry Cavill seems to be sharpening his sword (and cheekbones), now that the project is slicing its way to a new home at Amazon MGM Studios. According to new reports from Deadline, it looks like the immortals have packed their bags and moved to streaming neighborhoods.

There can be only one. Or, in the case of the "Highlander" franchise, there can be only six movies, three TV shows, and a web series, not to mention nine tie-in novels, two comic book titles, a card game, and a video game for the Atari Jaguar.

The mythology of the "Highlander" movies started pretty simply, spinning centuries-old tales of knight-errantry into a modern fable of magical immortality. Russel Mulcahy's 1986 original laid out the rules clearly: hiding among ordinary humans is a species of magical immortals who can only be killed by decapitation. When one Immortal decapitates another, they absorb their victim's life energy, becoming stronger and more exhilarated. The legend goes that when there is only one Immortal remaining on Earth, they will be granted a wish called The Prize. The central Immortal of the series, a 16th century Highlander named Connor MacLeod (Christopher Lambert), wishes more than anything to grow old.

The Highlander franchise has thrived on television, allowing for a more detailed exploration of immortals' lives and the mythology surrounding them. An anthology series would be the ideal format for the Highlander franchise, as it can delve into the backstories of various immortals and explore different genres. A Highlander anthology series could provide extensive narrative build-up and character development leading to a climactic showdown between the final immortals, ultimately creating a more satisfying movie trilogy.
