This Decade’s Most Disturbing Serial Killer Flick is Now Streaming Free: “Beautiful carnage”
Image
Extreme horror isn’t for everyone. I think it’s a necessary part of one’s horror education, and a valuable form of expression overall. Horror is political, and extreme horror is often at the tail end of that; stridently, urgently political. Extreme horror is a call to action, confronting audiences with sociopolitical truths and the ugliness of reality they’d rather not face. It doesn’t necessarily make for happy viewing, but it’s worthwhile all the same.

Now, as I’ve gotten older, I will concede it’s been harder for me to enjoy (whatever that means) extreme horror. I’ll still seek it out by virtue of some combination of Fomo and curiosity, but it’s harder and harder for me to stomach. I soldier on, however, since some of the genre’s brightest voices are presently working in that space, including Karim Ouelhaj. His 2022 feature Megalomaniac...

‘Bystanders’ Director Mary Beth McAndrews on the Power of Her Female-Directed Rape Revenge Film: ‘No More Male Gaze’
Image
Mary Beth McAndrews is determined to make art that wakes people up.

“There’s always been strong women in horror, incredible female characters,” she says. “I think what’s shifting in the horror of the last decade is more and more women are being given budgets by people to make movies that are much more of a sledgehammer, rather than a delicate little way to needle it, subtextually talk about women’s issues. Now we’re coming in with sledgehammers and saying, ‘It’s time, you’ve got to listen. We’re going to shove glass in your eyes and say no more male gaze.'”

McAndrews is smashing onto the scene with her directorial debut “Bystanders,” now available on VOD via Dread. The film is about Abby (Brandi Botkin), a young woman who visits a frat party with her friends, who are drugged, raped and chased by men. Yet...

Abby is a typical teenage girl nursing a not-so-secret crush on Cody, the quintessential rich frat boy. So, when Cody invites her and her friends Jade (Erica Dodt) and Brie (Callie Kirk) to what’s described as a frat party, Abby is elated. However, what she imagines will be a fun night quickly turns into a nightmare.

Cody and his equally privileged and sadistic buddies, Travis, Jacob (John Conners), and Brad, have no intention of hosting a typical party. Instead, their “party” is a setup for something far more sinister. Their real plan involves drugging and assaulting the unsuspecting girls before dumping them in the surrounding woods for a depraved hunt, treating them like animals in a lethal hunt.

Trap: M. Night Shyamalan's Serial Killer Thriller Divides Critics; Rotten Tomatoes Score Revealed
Image
The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable director M. Night Shyamalan's latest movie, Trap, arrives in theaters today, and the review embargo has only just lifted.

This isn't usually a great sign, and sure enough, the serial killer flick starring Josh Hartnett is currently sitting at 44% on Rotten Tomatoes with 39 verdicts added.

Despite the "rotten" score, quite a few critics have been defending the movie on social media, although most seem to agree that - like a lot of Shyamalan films - the plot starts to get far too convoluted and preposterous in the final act.

Still, Hartnett is said to give a great performance, and it sounds like Trap is an effective enough cat-and-mouse thriller for the majority of its run-time.

Worth catching on the big screen or waiting for streaming? Have a read through some of the reactions/reviews below, and let us know in the comments section.

Shyamalan's Trap - Ohhhhh Damn!

Like many of Cages recent films, Longlegs is not a big blockbuster by any means, but it is another unexpected offering from the comeback king.

The Neon horror film has made a huge impact thanks to a clever and mysterious marketing campaign. So clever, in fact, that even now as the movie prepares to make its cinema debut, none of the trailers or...

Nicolas Cage's New Horror Film Debuts With Perfect Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Recently, Nicolas Cage has been making many critically-acclaimed films. His most recent film, the Neon horror Longlegs' Rotten Tomatoes score has just debuted and it's impeccable.

Although Longlegs isn't out in theaters yet, the first reviews are in, and were enough to give the upcoming horror a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. So far, the film has only received nine reviews, but all of them were stunning and encouraging. As new ones come in, Longlegs might not maintain its perfect score, but its initial debut rating is a very strong start.

Longlegs: You May Have Trouble Sleeping After Watching This Spine-Chilling New Trailer
Image
The previous teasers for The Blackcoat's Daughter director Osgood Perkins' next feature, Longlegs, have been very effective in building an aura of unsettling dread around the mysterious horror flick, but this latest trailer really takes things to another level.

Though the movie is still playing things relatively close to the chest when it comes to revealing specific plot details, this footage does give us a little more to go on, as rookie FBI agent Lee Harker (It Follows star Maika Monroe) becomes obsessed with tracking down a sadistic serial killer (Nicolas Cage) who targets families - and might just have supernatural abilities.

Harker has a personal connection to the killer (did she survive an earlier attack?), which leads her down an even darker path and into the world of the Occult.

Say your prayers, check out the new trailer and poster below along with the initial social media reactions, and...

Longlegs: Nicolas Cage Is In Seriously Unsettling Form In Hair-Raising Full Trailer
Image
The first reactions to Longlegs were recently shared on social media, and after watching the full trailer for Osgood Perkins' (The Blackcoat's Daughter) latest project, it's easy to see why it's being hailed as one of the scariest movies of the year.

Hell, this honestly might go down as one of the most unsettling teasers we've ever seen.

If you think we're exaggerating, have a look...

The theatrical cut of the "Dirty" and "Sweet" teasers for ‘Longlegs’ has debuted online.

The teasers explore the two main characters of the film: FBI Agent Harker (Maika Monroe) and the serial killer, Longlegs (Nicolas Cage). pic.twitter.com/PM4aR9o37R

Though he's obviously going to be a little biased, here's what producer Josh Rosenbaum had to say about catching an early morning screening during an interview with Screen Rant.

"BestOf 2024": New Nicolas Cage Horror Movie Gets Praise Across The Board For Nightmarish Story & Visuals
Image
Longlegs is garnering high praise as the best horror film of the year, with reviewers describing it as genuinely terrifying and disturbing. The film's innovative marketing campaign, using cryptic teasers, has generated significant buzz and anticipation among horror enthusiasts. Director Oz Perkins, known for his work on The Blackcoat's Daughter, has crafted a mesmerizing and violently evil thriller with Longlegs that lingers long after it's over, per early reactions.

Early reviews for Neon's horror thriller Longlegs are overwhelmingly positive, as reviewers suggest it could be the best horror film of the year. Due to Neon's innovative marketing campaign, the Nicolas Cage-led movie has attracted much attention in its pre-release stage. The indie studio began releasing cryptic and chilling teasers for the film in January but initially kept it secret which movie the clips were for due to listing the movie's name in code made up of occult symbols.

First Longlegs reactions call it one of the scariest films of the year; Oz Perkins’ next film already greenlit
Image
Considering how much build-up Longlegs has had – with the stream of teasers, posters and symbols – the horror film had a lot to live up to, at least how it was being marketed. Fortunately for the involved parties, Longlegs looks to be one of the horror flicks to see so far this year, with most praising it for being an unnerving work that features stellar performances and channels The Silence of the Lambs.

Check out some of the early reviews of Longlegs below:

I was so lucky to see #Longlegs, and no exaggeration: it could be the best horror film of ‘24. Oz Perkins can really get under my skin; this is his masterpiece. Monroe gives a fabulously unique lead performance, and Cage? Nightmarish. Maybe the scariest 1st 10 mins, ever. pic.twitter.com/ImMEDDxGXi

Longlegs Hailed As "Unnerving, Disturbing" And "One-Of-a-Kind" In Highly Positive First Reactions
Image
Horror fans have been keeping a very close eye on director Osgood Perkins' next project, and the first social media reactions for the mysterious Longlegs are in.

These reactions are highly positive, and it sounds like the movie is a genuinely disturbing, terrifying experience.

Though Longlegs definitely seems to be keeping its biggest secrets firmly under wraps for the time being (and the teasers are all the better for it), we do know that the plot revolves around a rookie FBI agent (It Follows star Maika Monroe) attempting to track down a sadistic serial killer (Nicolas Cage) who targets families.

Cage's character has largely been kept out of the marketing, aside from one unsettling shot.

Check out the social media posts below, and keep an eye out for a new trailer.

Asking the Hard Questions About Extreme Cinema Like ‘Deadgirl’ [Horror Queers Podcast]
Rob Zombie
Asking Questions.

With Spooky Season firmly in the rear view mirror, Trace and I are now mid-way through our month on Toxic Masculinity. And while we probably could have counted Apt Pupil (and maybe even Rob Zombie’s Halloween 2), we officially kicked things off with Michael Haneke’s Funny Games.

Things get considerably darker with our second entry: Marcel Sarmiento and Gadi Harel‘s Deadgirl. The extreme film follows two high school teenage boys – Rickie (Shiloh Fernandez) and Jt (Noah Segan) – who discover a zombie girl (Jenny Spain) in an abandoned hospital and make the horrific decision to use her as a sex object rather than alert the authorities.

As Rickie struggles with his guilty conscience, Jt recruits other “friends” like Wheeler (Eric Podnar) to assault the girl. Things get out of hand, however, when a pair of jocks, including Johnny (Andrew Dipalma) – the boyfriend of Rickie’s crush,...

Ginger Snaps trilogy is getting a Blu-ray box set release in the UK
Image
The 2000 film Ginger Snaps (watch it Here) is my all-time favorite werewolf movie. That was followed by a sequel – Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed – and a very unexpected prequel – Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning – and while I’m not as enamored with them as I am with the original movie, I do get some enjoyment out of watching them. The oddball prequel especially. If you’re a fan of Ginger Snaps trilogy as well and happen to have a Region B (or region free) Blu-ray player, you’ll be glad to hear that Second Sight Films is packaging all three movies together in a limited edition UK box set that’s going to be released on October 30th. Just in time for Halloween, which happens to be the setting of the first movie.

Copies of the Ginger Snaps trilogy Blu-ray box set can be pre-ordered directly from Second Sight Films.
