Director Tim Burton was having a pretty difficult time at the box office for over a decade before Beetlejuice Beetlejuice broke past expectations and grossed around $450 million worldwide. His sole "hit" during that difficult phase was the literary adaptation Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. Described as a cross between the Harry Potter books and the X-Men films, Miss Peregrine grossed nearly $300 million worldwide in 2016, against a reported budget of $110 million. The movie featured Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, and Ella Purnell in the central roles, and received mixed reviews. Miss Peregrine has now been overtaken at the global box office by Apple's hit sports drama F1.

Hungarian auteur Bence Fliegauf is about as far from the mainstream as you can get, although he has tried his hand at various Hollywood genres — including the 2010 English-language sci-fi flick Womb, which starred Eva Green and Lesley Manville. But his eclectic range of movies are often dark and difficult to classify, which may explain why he’s been a regular on the festival circuit for nearly two decades without ever getting much play in theaters.
The director’s latest feature, Jimmy Jaguar, is another brooding head-scratcher, one that’s equal parts fascinating and frustrating. On paper, it could be pitched as a Hungarian Blair Witch Project meets Insidious, using a faux-documentary device to explore a case of demonic possession among a group of outsiders living in the countryside. But it doesn’t include a single jump scare, killing scene or drop of blood, and never manages to frighten the viewer.

‘Hijack’ didn’t get the spotlight it deserved, but it’s one of the most addictive series on the platform.
There’s so much dropping on Apple TV+ all the time (which is a great thing for subscribers!) that even a show starring the incredible Idris Elba can get lost in the shuffle. “Hijack” actually cracked Apple+’s Top 10 when it premiered, but you wouldn’t know it from the lack of buzz. Maybe it got overshadowed by shinier releases like “Silo” or “Ted Lasso,” but I was shouting about it to anyone who would listen. This show rips. It’s tense, addictive, and Elba is in full command. If you missed it the first time around, here’s why “Hijack” is the best under-the-radar drama on Apple TV+ right now.

Ridley Scott’s TheKingdom of Heaven may not have conquered the box office or critics when it first arrived, but the historical epic has become coveted by major streaming platforms in recent years. The movie landed on Prime Video last fall, and now it's expanding its digital footprint as it has recently arrived on Hulu. The war epic became available to stream on Hulu from July 1, increasing the show's chance of being discovered by a new generation of viewers and, for rewatchers, an opportunity to re-evaluate one of Scott’s most divisive works.
Originally released in 2005 to great fanfare, TheKingdom of Heaven boasted an impressive pedigree: Scott at the helm, a post-Lord of the RingsOrlando Bloom in the lead, and a sprawling medieval story of the Crusades co-starring Liam Neeson, Eva Green, Jeremy Irons, and Edward Norton. The budget ballooned to $130 million, and understandably, expectations were set sky-high. But the...

If James Gunn Wants It, These 5 Actresses Can Replace Ezra Miller as DC’s First Gender-swapped Flash
Will James Gunn make a bold move with Barry Allen, aka the Flash? Gunn would love to bring more female superheroes into his DC Universe, and the Flash is one of the central characters who could potentially be gender-swapped in the new Dcu.
There’s no doubt that such a decision would invite a whole lot more trouble for Gunn, possibly even more than the backlash DC faced over Ezra Miller’s The Flash in 2023.
Still, there’s a small chance Gunn could make this work with the right approach. A few actresses come to mind who could step into the role and replace Ezra Miller—or Grant Gustin—as the new Flash in the Dcu. Here are five actresses who could convincingly take on the mantle of “Barbara” Allen.

Matt Smith feels like a mess of contradictions. He often comes across as charming and even a little bit goofy, but can also imbue his work with a surprising amount of menace. He's excellent at picking television series to work on, but has appeared in bomb after bomb on the big screen. So what can we make of this actor who seems to be made up of so many different parts?
An aspiring football player, Smith made the switch the acting after an injury sidelined his athletic career. After a string of small roles on television, he landed what would become his big break playing the Doctor on "Doctor Who." Since then, he's taken on a variety of different roles, sometimes the hero and sometimes the villain (and often somewhere in between), appearing in both film and television. And although we're all painfully aware of some of his worst films,...

Martin Campbell directed the 2006 James Bond film Casino Royale, which featured Daniel Craig in the lead role as James Bond. Although the director was lauded for his Bond movie, it seems that Martin Campbell couldn’t quite make anything like it again.
Campbell’s another movie, titled Dirty Angles, is slowly climbing the streaming charts in the United States, but we don’t think that the film deserves the recognition. Despite the fame that the movie is receiving now, is Dirty Angels a must-watch or a hard pass?

Acclaimed filmmaker Sir Ridley Scott has been behind some of the most iconic films of all time. He has helmed many box office hits, although his projects weren't always a hit with the critics.
2005's Kingdom of Heaven is one of them. His lesser-known historical epic premiered on May 6, 2005, and received mixed reviews, but made decent money at the box office. As the film recently celebrated its 20th anniversary, Kingdom of Heaven has also scored a brand-new streaming home and will head to Hulu on July 1, per WhenToStream.
The historical epic had previously switched streaming homes late last year. Ahead of Gladiator II's release, which marked the sequel to probably one of Ridley Scott's most famous works, 2000's Gladiator, Kingdom of Heaven headed to Prime Video on Nov. 1. The film had been available on Disney+ before, and now it's heading to Hulu.

Everyone loves Sean Bean. Passionately beloved for his portrayal of Ned Stark in the first season of Game of Thrones, Boromir in J.R.R. Tolkien and Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings, and most recently, as one part of the brilliant Prime Video comedy, Deep Cover, Bean's legions of fans will always celebrate his many projects in a career that spans over 40 years. In light of the release of Deep Cover, one of Bean's more forgotten action flicks has found its way onto streaming charts, officially joining the ranks of Starz's top 10 most-streamed movies in the US as of June 17, 2025.

Not long after he wielded Thor's hammer in the MCU, Chris Hemsworth wielded an ax in this live-action fantasy feature, The Huntsman: Winter's War. This 2016 movie received a poor reception among fans and critics during its initial release, but perhaps it is thanks to the live-action Snow White movie that made its way to Disney+ recently that this box office flop is now making the rounds on HBO Max's streaming charts.
According to FlixPatrol, The Huntsman: Winter's War is among the top 20 Movies on HBO, placing in 11th place as of June 17, 2025, just below Eva Green's war film Dirty Angels. Unfortunately, prior to this streaming success, this prequel/sequel to the 2012 film Snow White and the Huntsmanwas deemed a box office flop. It generated over $164 million worldwide while earning a poor critics' score of 20% and a low audience score of 45% on Rotten Tomatoes.

When "Kingdom of Heaven" dashed into theaters in 2005, it carried an enormous amount of hype. Not only was it Ridley Scott's first full-blown epic since the box office and Oscar phenomenon "Gladiator," released five years prior, but it featured an astonishing cast -- Orlando Bloom, fresh off "Lord of the Rings," Eva Green, Jeremy Irons, and Liam Neeson -- boasted handsome production values, a terrific trailer, and an intriguing concept. Who didn't want to see the director of "Gladiator" tackle the Crusades?
Well, as it turns out, not too many people. "Kingdom of Heaven" cost a reported $110 million to produce (excluding publicity and advertising) and opened to a modest $19 million in the United States, en route to a disappointing $47.5 million domestic total. Ouch. Internationally, the picture fared better, collecting $171 million to raise its worldwide gross to $218 million -- not terrible, but a far cry from "Gladiator's" impressive $451 million take.

Talking to Ridley Scott feels a bit like it must have been to watch gladiator matches in the Roman Colosseum: You never quite know what to expect, but it’s guaranteed to be an exciting ride.
He’s been knighted, nominated for four Oscars, and his films have grossed more than $5 billion worldwide. Even if he wasn’t 87 years old and 30 films into an almost 50-year career, Scott has earned the right to talk about what he likes. On a recent Sunday morning, the subject was his 2005 film “Kingdom of Heaven,” which now receives a limited re-release in theaters and a spanking-new 4K transfer on home video.

Update: This story was originally published March 20, 2025; it was updated on May 27, 2025 with the addition of Lilo & Stich.
Following the disappointing performance of Snow White at the box office earlier this year, Disney reportedly put a live-action remake of Tangled on hold and hit pause on other projects in development. However, the fantastic, record-smashing opening weekend of Lilo & Stitch may convince the House of Mouse to once again aggressively remake its animated features.
Disney first started re-imagining its animation classics into live-action features during the '90s, and that trend has only accelerated in the 21st century. The next remake on the horizon is Moana, which features Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson reprising his role as Maui from the 2016 original. But that won’t be arriving in theaters until July 2026.
Until Moana debuts, our rankings for all of Disney’s live-action remakes are up to date through the release of Lilo & Stitch.

The reputation of Martin Campbell's 2011 superhero flick "Green Lantern" precedes it. "Green Lantern" was one of the more high-profile bombs of its decade, making $237 million on a $200 million budget. Although the Hal Jordan/Green Lantern character had been a part of DC Comics since 1959, he was still a tough sell to mainstream audiences, given how strange he was.
Briefly: the Green Lantern belongs to the Green Lantern Corps, a widespread intergalactic peacekeeping force of aliens that merrily sails around the cosmos righting wrongs. The members of the Corps are "selected" by semi-sentient rings that affix themselves randomly to their fingers and grant them bizarre superpowers. Green Lantern can fly, yes, but also construct physical objects ... out of the color green. Oh yes, and green is the color of willpower, and the other colors of the spectrum also have their own emotional powers behind them. The mythology runs deeper, of course,...

20 years ago, 20th Century Fox began the summer-blockbuster season with a sword-and-sandals epic about the Crusades. Kingdom of Heaven‘s pedigree was impressive, if not bulletproof. Ridley Scott was only five years on from his Best Picture-winning Gladiator and newly minted movie star Orlando Bloom had plum, stand-out roles in two successful franchises (one of which had just won Best Picture itself). Still, it was a risky endeavor. Even riskier when considering the filmmakers’ challenging of religious truths and customs at a time when many had allowed fear to give way to hate, using their faith as a rationalization for terrible sins.
The film tells of the blacksmith Balian (Bloom), a tortured soul reeling from the death of his wife and infant child. His father, Baron Godfrey (Liam Neeson), and legion of crusading knights arrive to invite him to travel with them to the Holy Land. Though he initially refuses,...

Josh Hartnett has banked nearly 30 years in Hollywood, beginning with roles in horror flicks “The Faculty” and “Halloween H20: 20 Years Later” and the TV show “Cracker.”
Sure, he landed big roles, like in Michael Bay’s “Pearl Harbor,” but the former teen idol never got much respect for his acting. Now, however, thanks to his roles in “Oppenheimer,” “Trap” and “Black Mirror,” we’re in the middle of a Hartnett-issance

At long last, Ridley Scott's crusade to bring his vision of Kingdom of Heaven is at its end. The director's cut of the medieval epic is returning to theaters for one day only. The film will screen on May 14 and tickets are now available on Fandango.
First released in 2005, Kingdom of Heaven is a fictionalized version of the Third Crusade, and centers around a blacksmith-turned-knight (Orlando Bloom), who gets swept up in the battle for Jerusalem in the 12th century. The film ran into problems with test audiences, and 20th Century Fox ordered that 45 minutes be cut from the film. The resulting two-hour, 24-minute film was released to mixed reviews (it holds a 39% Rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes) and middling box office, grossing $218 million Usd on a $130 million budget.

Ridley Scott’s made some legendary films, but even the best directors have their regrets. Kingdom of Heaven was supposed to be an epic masterpiece, yet one major decision still haunts him. Decades later, he can’t shake the feeling that he messed up – big time.
The swords clashed, the battles raged, but behind the scenes, Scott’s biggest fight was with himself. He knew he had made the wrong call, and audiences weren’t shy about letting him know.

Humankind has waged war since before the beginning of recorded time. The first massacre took place around 10,000 years ago in Kenya, while the first definitive war took place several millennia later between the Sumerians and the Elamites in Mesopotamia circa 2,700 BC. From these bloody beginnings was born one of our most enduring and consistent institutions: War. The word itself sounds harsh, owing to its origins from the old High German word "werran," meaning "to confuse." Could there be a more accurate description?
It should be no surprise that war "movies" began before the advent of motion pictures as an art form or industry. The earliest war footage (some of it staged) was probably from the Greco-Turkish War of 1897, while the first proper war film was "Tearing Down The Spanish Flag" released in 1898 as a 90-second short film for nickelodeon theaters. While those may seem ancient to us, they're barely a...

"Quantum of Solace" may be the most baffling entry in the entire "James Bond" franchise. Sure, you have to throw other oddities into contention, like "A View to a Kill" or "Octopussy" ... but enough about the end of Roger Moore's "Bond" run (it can't hurt us anymore). For all the "grounded" grittiness of the Daniel Craig era, this last chapter of 007 history brought a couple of duds in the form of "Quantum of Solace" and "Spectre." The former, however, is far more of a mess, starting with the title itself, which still confounds many a casual viewer.
The name "Quantum of Solace" actually comes from an Ian Fleming short story. Far from the tales of espionage that normally make up the "James Bond" film universe, the story takes place at an aristocratic dinner party attended by 007. The main subject of conversation is domestic drama, with the title being connected...

As far as iconic film franchises go, few do it better than the British super-spy James Bond. For over 60 years, the espionage series has followed the exploits of Bond, the ultimate gentleman spy, with a keen taste for sophistication. That stylish detail carries over to Bond's choice in automobiles, both used practically to get around his globe-hopping destinations and often fully stocked with lethal extras installed. Just like the many memorable women that Bond has romantic dalliances with, Agent 007 is rarely seen with the same car in more than one movie.
From the fully submersible to the reliable set of wheels to get through windy roads in the middle of a high-speed chase, Bond has an extensive array of cars. Though many of the makes and models gradually change over time, that classic sense of distinction never diminishes.
Here are the 10 best James Bond cars ranked.

Liam Neeson starred in a sweeping and emotional historical drama that took place during the Crusades. The film, Kingdom of Heaven, was loved by fans but wildly scorned by critics, who deemed the film shallow and dull. Such a wide expanse of reception from critics and audiences is not unheard of but is pretty notable for a movie by Ridley Scott. And while the famed director is not without his share of critical misses (Exodus: Gods and Kings) in regard to Kingdom of Heaven, it looks like critics have got it wrong on this one.

‘Cleaner’ Review: Daisy Ridley Packs a Punch in Martin Campbell’s Disjointed Climate Change Actioner
Martin Campbell has been on an unusual directorial journey since directing what is largely agreed to be the best of the modern James Bond films, Casino Royale. In the nearly 20 years since then, the New Zealand-born director has stuck to seldom-watched actioners with impressive casts likeThe Foreignerwith Jackie Chan and Pierce Brosnan, The Protégé with Maggie Q and Michael Keaton, Liam Neeson in Memory, and last year he reunited with Eva Green for Dirty Angels. Cleaner, starring Daisy Ridley, is the latest in the long list of well-acted B-movies, with scripts that don’t quite live up to expectations.

A film set is no place for little girls. In the fairy-tale-adjacent world of Lucile Hadžihalilović’s frigid dark fantasy “The Ice Tower,” an orphan runs away from her foster home and takes refuge in the basement of a movie studio, finding herself drawn to the production — and its star, played by Marion Cotillard — the way a child in a Hans Christian Andersen story might be lured into the clutches of a wicked enchantress. Aptly enough, the script they’re shooting is “The Snow Queen,” aspects of which echo through the ’70s-set movie’s many layers, all the way out to us, whom Hadžihalilović hopes to trap in her crystal prism.
Cotillard and Hadžihalilović collaborated once before, early in both their careers, on 2004’s “Innocence,” where the director first planted the unholy seeds she’s still harvesting all these years later: unsettling yet artful projects in which Hadžihalilović depicts the...

A new James Bond favorite is slowly emerging and, much like fellow 007 favorite Henry Cavill, he’s something of a Zack Snyder staple. Scottish actor Stuart Martin, who is best recognized for his roles in Snyder’s Army of Thieves and Rebel Moon saga, has seen his odds improve as he gradually catches up with the likes of Kraven the Hunter star Aaron Taylor-Johnson, The Gentlemen’s Theo James, and Little Women actor James Norton as the top choice to take over the iconic role from Daniel Craig.
According to William Hill spokesperson, Lee Phelps (via GBNews), Stuart Martin’s emergence as another firm-favorite has been an “intriguing turn” in the ongoing search for the next James Bond, with the Slow West star now “a serious contender.”

Apple TV+ has signed its first ever agreement with professional bodies representing the French audiovisual sector committing the platform to investment obligations in local and European productions.
The accord, which does not cover cinema, will see the platform adhere to obligations set out in France’s 2021 Smad decree governing investment quotas and media windows for all subscription-based, pay-per-view and free VOD services operating in the country.
Under the four-year agreement, Apple TV+ will invest 20% of its previous year’s net annual turnover in France in the development and production of European and French audiovisual works.
In addition, 70% of this commitment will be directed towards independent productions by French and European producers, who will then retain rights to the IP.
A clause on the diversity of investments in documentary and animation is also in works.
Professional animation, producer and distributor bodies AnimFrance, Satev, Sedpa, Spi, Uspa, and Sacd welcomed the deal.

A medieval Ridley Scott movie fails to impress a historian with its depiction of a battle. The director has built a reputation for creating epic, visually striking films, often set against vast historical backdrops. Scott and his movies have tackled various historical eras, from ancient times to the 1980s and 1990s. From Gladiator to House of Gucci and Gladiator II, his films often explore themes of power, duty, and moral conflict, set within tumultuous periods of history.
As Scott’s filmmaking journey progressed, his interest in depicting large-scale military conflicts and action scenes intensified. For example, 2021's The Last Duel covered certain pivotal moments within medieval France, while the long-awaited sequel Gladiator II furthered his exploration of ancient Rome. The latter film was just released in November 2024 after a great deal of anticipation, and though it was met with somewhat mixed reviews, several heralded it as a demonstration of Scott's talent with historical epics.
