Jake Gyllenhaal's Creepy Sci-Fi Horror Movie Is A Streaming Hit On Prime Video
Image
"Life" may not have been a big hit when it landed in theaters in 2017, but several years later it's finding new life on Prime Video. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds, the sci-fi horror film has climbed to the top of the streaming charts, coming in at No. 4, and honestly, it deserves this second chance. Written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the cast of "Life" also includes Rebecca Ferguson, Emmy-winning "Shōgun" star Hiroyuki Sanada, Olga Dihovichnaya, and Ariyon Bakare. Alongside Gyllenhaal and Reynolds, they play astronauts on the International Space Station who make contact with an alien lifeform. Unfortunately, this little nibbler isn't the friendly kind and soon exterminates the crew one by one, leaving the survivors to do everything they can to prevent it from returning to Earth.

Our own Jacob Hall described "Life" as "an old-fashioned B-Movie dressed up like a blockbuster," with a great creature at the center of this feature.

Fans Thought Jake Gyllenhaal's Life (2017) Would Be a Venom Prequel
Image
As Venom: The Last Dance shuffles its way toward its theatrical release on October 25, 2024, it's hard not to think of the time Marvel fans believed the 2017 sci-fi horror film Life was a Venom prequel. Seven years ago, footage seen in Life's Red Band trailer led to online conspiracy theories linking the Jake Gyllenhaal/Ryan Reynolds outer-space thriller to the Marvel symbiote's origin story, all of which turned out to be a massive misunderstanding. Or was it?!?

While a classic case of mistaken identity, the irony is that many fans feel like Life is a superior Venom movie despite having zero narrative ties to the popular Sony/Marvel franchise starring Tom Hardy. With The Last Dance on the cards, it's time to explain how the confusion came about and how recycled footage from Spider-Man 3 played a large role in spreading the misguided theory that Life was a Venom sequel.

2017 Space Horror Movie Criticized By The Astronaut Ryan Reynolds Consulted For It
Image
Astronaut Chris Hadfield criticizes the methods used to kill the alien in the movie Life, stating that using an oxygen candle and flamethrower would be dangerous and unrealistic on a spaceship. Hadfield points out that a flamethrower inside a spaceship would be extremely hazardous, as fire is one of the biggest emergencies on a spacecraft. Despite the inaccuracies, audiences enjoyed the zero-gravity effects and the design of the alien in Life.

The science-fiction horror movie Life gets criticized by astronaut Chris Hadfield, who Ryan Reynolds consulted with during production. Directed by Daniel Espinosa, the film follows members of the International Space Station, who unknowingly bring a dangerous and rapidly-evolving alien life form on board their ship. Released in 2017, Life went on to have an underwhelming box office, but earned praise for its performances and unique creature. Along with Reynolds, who portrayed Rory Adams, the movie's cast includes Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson,...

5 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t Miss ‘Life’
Why Daniel Espinosa’s sci-fi horror is very much worth your time.

You might already have a number of personally justified reasons to skip Daniel Espinosa’s outer space horror-thriller Life, written by the Deadpool and Zombieland scribe duo Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. For starters, the general lack of interest in it might be weighing down your own willingness (Forbes’ Scott Mendelson reports the movie only made a measly $12.2 million weekend debut.) Or its overall “meh” critical reception — with an underwhelming 66% score on Rotten Tomatoes (just 46% when you look at Top Critics only) — might be the deal-breaker for you. Or perhaps you have room for one and only one set-in-space horror per year inside of you, which you already reserved for Ridley Scott’s upcoming Alien: Covenant.

Due respect, you will be missing out, and not just on its first-rate and diverse ensemble...

Elizabeth Banks, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, and RJ Cyler in Power Rangers (2017)
Beauty and the Beast Beats Power Rangers and Life in Weekend #2
Elizabeth Banks, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, and RJ Cyler in Power Rangers (2017)
After shattering box office records last weekend with an amazing debut of $174.4 million, nothing was expected to stand in the way of a second straight weekend win for Beauty and the Beast. The live action fairy tale adaptation squared off against three newcomers this weekend, Lionsgate's Power Rangers, Sony's Life and Warner Bros.' CHiPs, although, as expected, none of these new releases managed to come close to Beauty and the Beast. The Disney blockbuster easily won its second weekend in a row with an estimated $88.3 million.

Last weekend, this long-awaited live-action adaptation broke Batman v Superman's record for largest March opening ever, and it also broke records for the largest debut for a PG movie, and had the biggest IMAX debut ever for a PG film as well. While it only opened against one other movie last weekend, the R-rated thriller The Belko Experiment, which debuted in roughly 1/4th...

Film Review: Suspenseful ‘Life’ is Tense, Compelling Science Fiction
Chicago – Combining the invasion elements of “Alien” with the life-raft-in-space morbidity of “Gravity,” the new film “Life” maintains a grip from the enlightened beginning to the twisted end. Mars is the origin, so the film joins “The Martian” and “The Space Between Us” in sourcing the red planet.

Rating: 4.0/5.0

The idea, it seems, is to find the type of actors who can sell the story, and the cast of “Life” is up to the task. Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds and Rebecca Ferguson are part of the crew that is experiencing the “and then there were none” scenario, as the life form from Mars is loose on their space station. This seemingly unstoppable force occurs through the decision making of exploration… are we willing to take the consequences of “discovering” life outside the earth? It all adds up to a well done thriller, which is more of a suspense movie – like...

Review: Life Features a Killer Creature, But Lacks Personality
You know the old saying “curiosity killed the cat?” Well, Daniel Espinosa’s Life proves that curiosity can certainly kill the astronaut, too, as a crew aboard a space station discover the hard way that some questions shouldn’t be answered… or probed with an electric wand.

A small team of astronauts, one alien, and one isolated setting where no one can hear them scream. Yes, the setup for Life, penned by Zombieland and Deadpool co-writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, may sound familiar, and although it never strays far from the story beats many sci-fi horror fans will be expecting, it does execute them (and its characters) with efficient, even ruthless, precision.

Despite its title, death is omnipresent throughout Life, and when characters do die, the emotional toll it takes on the surviving characters is painfully palpable. From its first brutal, unexpected kill scene, you know that Life treats...

Life – Review
David Jordan (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Miranda North (Rebecca Ferguson) in Columbia Pictures’ Life.Courtesy of Sony Pictures. © 2016 Ctmg, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

The science fiction/horror film Life sends a team of astronauts to Mars on a mission to retrieve a robotic capsule containing what may be the first life form found on Mars. They are supposed to analyze this single cell, in the safety of space, but everyone who saw the movie Alien knows collecting extraterrestrial life forms is risky business.

So we are already braced for a scary ride when the little organism they name Calvin turns out to be less cute than it seems, despite reaching out a finger-like appendage a la Et. The accomplished Nasa crew on this interstellar mission is an international mix of scientists and specialists, mostly with multiple skill sets. The six crew members include physician/pilot/seasoned space veteran David Jordan (Jake Gyllenhaal...

Life Review
Space. “The final frontier.” Sprawling nothingness explored to death by superheroes, adventurers and aliens alike. The whole “spaceship disaster scenario” seems familiar by now, doesn’t it? Characters are confined inside cold, industrial coffins that repeat symbolically through modern science fiction. Gravity might take us outside, but the backdrops rarely differ. Infinite black vastness dotted with twinkling stars – like an unending echo chamber. It’s with this mentality that Life plays by Ridley Scott’s alien survival textbooks, as a thousand post-Alien thrillers have similarly attempted. In space, no one can hear you scream – but can they hear you “meh?”

Director Daniel Espinosa takes us aboard the International Space Station, where astronauts await research findings from Mars. The tiny cargo shuttle almost flies away due to its wonky trajectory, but Roy Adams (Ryan Reynolds) reels in the hurdling package. Researcher Hugh Derry (Ariyon Bakare) studies their collected specimens, to...

Julie Lynn, Mary Jo Markey, and Nigel Phelps in Life : Origine inconnue (2017)
EW Review: Life Keeps the Audience on Edge Until the Last Scene — but It’s No Alien
Julie Lynn, Mary Jo Markey, and Nigel Phelps in Life : Origine inconnue (2017)
As much as it wants to be, the new deep-space thriller Life is no Alien. Then again, what is? What could be? When Ridley Scott directed his 1979 no one-can-hear-you-scream masterpiece, there were still rules to break and boundaries to push. He giddily broke and pushed all of them, combining what were dismissed as two distinct and disreputable gutter genres (science fiction and horror) and fusing them into one glorious chest-bursting hybrid. You could be intelligent and graphically gooey at the same time. Who knew? In fact, it was possible that by doing so you could even approach something like art.

Julie Lynn, Mary Jo Markey, and Nigel Phelps in Life : Origine inconnue (2017)
'Life' Review: This A-List 'Alien' Rip-Off Is Seriously D.O.A.
Julie Lynn, Mary Jo Markey, and Nigel Phelps in Life : Origine inconnue (2017)
What we have here is junky Alien clone disguised as, well, something better. But there's no life in Life, just leftovers, and a set-up comes pretty close to being a parody of the 1979 Ridley Scott classic. We're squeezed into a claustrophobic , $200 billion international space station, which is charged with care of a probe that has returned from Mars with soil samples. And what do you know, when you put one of those samples in a petri dish, something emerges. And it's alive! At first, the one-cell organism looks like a floating plant tendril,...

Review — ‘Life’ Finds a Way to Deliver Slick Thrills Despite the Generic Setup
‘Life’ Finds a Way to Deliver a Fun Thrill Ride Despite the Generic SetupA compelling cast, an intelligent enemy, and slick thrills make for an entertaining slice of sci-fi/horror.

As much as films like Apollo 13 and Hidden Figures want us to believe otherwise, space-set horror films have shown us again and again that astronauts really aren’t all that bright. How else to explain the endless display of scientists and space explorers who encounter a previously unknown alien life-form and against all common sense decide it’s probably something they should touch?

That’s the immediate hurdle the new film Life needs to overcome even before the the first frame appears, and while the moment in question is a definite stumbling block the movie still succeeds in becoming a highly entertaining and often suspenseful ride into darkness.

A six-person crew aboard the International Space Station have just brought an interplanetary sample aboard, and...

Review: ‘Life’ is an Unsparing, Familiar Survival Thriller
If Hollywood’s revitalized interest in space — embodied by Gravity, The Martian, and Interstellar — has proven anything, it’s that the galaxy is terrifying enough without the presence of extraterrestrial life. As the horrors of eternal darkness, flying debris, spacesuit malfunctions, and grappling with the psychological effects of loneliness weigh on our protagonists, Life attempts to up the ante by adding to the equation a creature hell-bent on destroying every human in its path. Although wholly derivative of the sci-fi touchstones that came before it, Daniel Espinosa’s streamlined, down-and-dirty approach makes for a refreshingly self-contained survival thriller.

Beginning with an extended, zero-gravity-replicating single take that hovers through the International Space Station, we’re introduced to the crew (made up of Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, Ryan Reynolds, Hiroyuki Sanada, Ariyon Bakare, and Olga Dihovichnaya), who have found the first proof of life beyond Earth. A space probe heading back from...

“Life” is an A-list filled B-movie science fiction tale
There will always be films that exist as a way of paying tribute to a classic that’s come before it. In the next few days, a new one is hitting screens. On Friday, Life opens and it hopes to be a new version to an old hit. The cast here though is impeccable, led by the A-list team of Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds. They’re two of the biggest and brightest stars in Hollywood. Working off of a script by the suddenly hot screenwriting duo of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who are fresh off of a Writers Guild of America nomination for Deadpool. This is what Reese and Wernick have been up to since, with Reynolds along for the ride as well. The movie is a science fiction horror outing in the tradition of Alien. Here, we follow a team of a half dozen scientists working aboard the International Space Station.

Can Power Rangers Beat Beauty and the Beast at the Box Office?
Elizabeth Banks, Becky G, Ludi Lin, Dacre Montgomery, Naomi Scott, and RJ Cyler in Power Rangers (2017)
Disney's Beauty and the Beast somehow managed to exceed the expectations of most box office analysts, with a record-breaking opening weekend of $174.7 million, beating the Sunday estimates by over $4 million. This long-awaited live-action adaptation broke Batman v Superman's record for largest March opening ever, and it also broke records for the largest debut for a PG movie, and had the biggest IMAX debut ever for a PG film as well. While it only opened against one other movie last weekend, the R-rated thriller The Belko Experiment, which debuted in roughly 1/4th of the theaters Beauty and the Beast was in, this live-action fairy tale will have much more competition heading into its second weekend, facing Lionsgate's Power Rangers, Sony's Life, Warner Bros.' CHiPs and River Rain's sports drama Slamma Jamma, although Beauty and the Beast should still easily reign supreme.

Box Office Mojo reports that Power Rangers, Life, CHiPs...

Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal Look Handsome as Hell at SXSW
Ryan Reynolds at an event for Deadpool 2 (2018)
Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal looked all sorts of gorgeous when they stepped out to promote their new film, Life, at the SXSW festival in Austin, TX, on Saturday. The two heartthrobs showed off their sexy smolders and scruff as they struck their best poses for photographers. Ryan and Jake star alongside Ariyon Bakare, Olga Dihovichnaya, Rebecca Ferguson, and Hiroyuki Sanada in the sci-fi thriller, which tells the story of six astronauts on the International Space Station who discover the first living organism on Mars. While the actors fight for their lives against each other in the movie, Ryan and Jake have developed quite the budding bromance. Back in January, Jake talked during a screening of Nocturnal Animals about how the Academy overlooked Ryan. "I look at Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool and I say, 'No one can do that but him. That is truly, purely him.' As an artist,...

SXSW: Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal Talk On-Set Camaraderie at 'Life' Premiere
Daniel Espinosa
Daniel Espinosa’s sci-fi thriller Life hurtled into its world premiere Saturday as the closing-night film at SXSW in Austin, with castmembers Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, Ryan Reynolds, Olga Dihovichnaya, Ariyon Bakare and Hiroyuki Sanada in tow to promote the pic.

The boisterous premiere was directly at odds with the tone of the film, which is mostly tense and light on humor, which surprised some, considering Deadpool scribes Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese penned the screenplay. Wernick, who admits he doesn’t like scary movies, said he and Reese embraced the more serious tone of the film. “It was really liberating not...

Life review
Jake Gyllenhaal leads the cast in the intense space horror-thriller, Life. Here's our review of an unexpectedly good genre film...

Great horror movies are, among other things, an exercise in style and tone. Alien differed from earlier monsters-on-a-spaceship films because it took its subject matter seriously and featured stunning design work from director Ridley Scott and his collaborators. Gravity wasn’t the first film about astronauts trapped in space, but it was one of the most striking thanks to Alfonso Cuaron’s dizzying use of camerawork and digital filmmaking to create what appeared to be a story told in one seamless take.

This brings us to Life, a space horror film which feels like an unholy amalgam of Alien, Gravity, plus a dash of Prometheus, John Carpenter’s The Thing and Nigel Kneale’s The Quatermass Xperiment. Life’s individual parts aren’t unique, but the way they’ve been...

The Intensity Escalates in New Red-Band Spot for the Sci-Fi Thriller Life With Footage From Spider-man 3
We've got a new red-band trailer for Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal's sci-fi thriller Life. The more that I see of this film the better is starts to look. This latest trailer definitely escalates the intensity and gives us our best look yet at the deadly alien creature from Mars that the crew of this spacecraft has to deal with as they fight to stay alive and prevent the creature from getting to earth.

This looks like it could be a solid sci-fi horror film. It has a great supporting cast that also includes Rebecca Ferguson, Olga Dihovichnaya, Ariyon Bakare, and Hiroyuki Sanada.

There is a funny aspect of this trailer that I want to point out, though. The gang over at io9 spotted a brief clip in it that is footage that was lifted right out of Spider-Man 3. You can see screenshots from each film below the...

Final Red Band Trailer For Life Cranks The Horror Up To 11
For eons, Mars has been a constant source of wonder and amazement for human beings, from the Romans christening our neighboring planet as the god of war to modern-day entrepreneurs like Elon Musk, who firmly believe that human colonization of the Red Planet is an achievable feat – and one he hopes we can accomplish within the next 50 to 100 years.

But on March 24th, writer-director Daniel Espinosa (Safe House, Child 44) will make the journey from science fact to science fiction for Life, a space-set thriller wherein Mars is not so much a high-priority destination as it is the home of monstrous alien organisms. They’ve lain dormant on the scorched surface for generations, but when the six-member crew of the International Space Station intercepts a probe carrying a sample from the Martian surface, all hell threatens to break loose on the Iss.

Headed up by Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson and Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds,...

The most profound discovery, or the end of everything? Find out in the Superbowl trailer for Life
Author: Jon Lyus

Last night’s Superbowl gave us a wave of new TV spots and teaser trailers for this year’s biggest films. We saw the return of Baby Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Kurt Russell made an appearance concerning the Fate of the Furious (The Fast and the Furious 8’s confusing title), and in our favourite spot Stranger Things are happening in season two of Netflix’s smash hit 80s show. Another film which may not have had the same level of hype orbiting it is Life, a new sci-fi disaster film concerning a crucial discovery that initially seems to have huge implications for the human race. Of course things don’t turn out so well and everything goes wrong, a race for survival begins.

‘I’ve told you, I don’t want my windows cleaned.’

With shades of Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity this...

Thrilling Super Bowl Spot for the Sci-Fi Film Life with Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal
Sony Pictures has released an intense Super Bowl spot for their sci-fi space thriller Life. The movie stars Ryan Reynolds, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Rebecca Ferguson as they are put in a nightmarish situation where they have to fight for their lives while on board a space station after discovering life on Mars.

The trailer offers up some exciting new footage that did its job of getting me more excited for the film. The movie comes from Safe House director Daniel Espinosa from a screenplay written by Deadpool and Zombieland screenwriters of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Their involvement along with the cast of the film tells me there's a good chance that this movie could be a great flick.

Jake Gyllenhaal And Co. Make First Contact In Tense New Promo For Life
The search for extra-terrestrial intelligence comes to a quick and terrifying end in this new promo for Life, Daniel Espinosa’s near-future thriller that takes the International Space Station and transforms it into a haunted house riddled with sentient alien organisms and spine-chilling terror.

As promised, Sony has now released an eerie new teaser for the film, which will also air during tomorrow’s Super Bowl Li (in an extended version), marking the first time the studio has booked a spot during the primetime NFL window since The Amazing Spider-Man 2. They’ve clearly invested a lot of faith in Espinosa’s vision and at least based on this exciting sneak peek, it’s not too difficult to see why.

Featuring a cast toplined by Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds and Rebecca Ferguson’s astronauts, Life imagines a scenario in which the crew of the Iss detects signs of extraterrestrial life on Mars.

Extra-Terrestrial Life Stalks Ryan Reynolds And The Crew In New Photos For 2017 Sci-Fi
See Full Gallery Here

Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt’s Passengers may be the talk of the town – and rightly so – but come 2017, moviegoers will be rooting for a very different team of astronauts in Life, Daniel Espinosa’s star-studded space thriller that imagines a near-future scenario in which humanity makes the greatest discovery of them all: extra-terrestrial intelligence.

But Life is a sci-fi thriller, and that alien lifeform turns out to be much more sophisticated – dangerous, even – than anyone could imagine. Housed up in the International Space Station with said organism are Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds and Rebecca Ferguson, who can be seen exploring the bowels of the Iss up above. There’s also a new poster, tethered with the foreboding message: “Be careful what you search for.” It seems Gyllenhaal and Co. have bitten off more than they can chew.

Once slated for a May release, Sony recently reshuffled its deck and,...

Black Nights 2016 Review: House Of Others, The Ghosts of War
Sometimes ghosts are visible, sometimes invisible, and sometimes 'ghosts' are the emptiness, the palpable void left behind. And the latter can be the most frightening and sad of all. In Russudan Gluridze's feature film House of Others, the ghosts are both the living who inhabit an almost deserted village, and the void that follows them as they attempt to live some sort of life out of almost nothing. It is a remarkably assured directorial debut, one that creeps into the soul as much as it saddens the heart. Astamur (Zurab Magalashvili) and Liza (Olga Dykhovichnaya) arrive in an almost deserted village with their two children, to take over a house abandoned by a family forced out by the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict. Their only neighbours are Ira...

Alien Life Haunts Jake Gyllenhaal And Ryan Reynolds In First Trailer For Sci-Fi Thriller
Alien Life comes to haunt the crew of the International Space Station in the eerie first trailer for Daniel Espinosa’s 2017 sci-fi pic.

Hailing from Sony Pictures, this is the second high-profile space vehicle to emerge from the studio after Passengers, Morten Tyldum’s upcoming thriller that brings together Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence. That’ll bow in December, but when it comes to Life, Sony has assembled Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds and Rebecca Ferguson for a story that involves one of the most historic discoveries in human history: the first evidence of extra-terrestrial activity.

First Trailer for Space Station Thriller 'Life' Featuring Jake Gyllenhaal
"We're looking at the first proof of life beyond Earth." Sony has unveiled a trailer for a new sci-fi thriller titled Life, about a discovery on the space station that goes awry. This movie kind of came out of nowhere, I didn't know they were even making this, and it has one helluva cast. Jake Gyllenhaal stars along with Ryan Reynolds, Rebecca Ferguson, Hiroyuki Sanada, Ariyon Bakare, and Olga Dihovichnaya. They play a crew on the space station who discover a life form on a rogue satellite, but when they take a closer look not all is as it seems. Yes this definitely looks like Gravity meets The Thing, but I'm still curious to check it out. The big twist halfway in seems crazy fun, and I'm always down for more cool space movies. Here's the first trailer (+ international version) for Daniel Espinosa's Life, direct from Sony's YouTube: Life...

Coming Distractions: Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds find terrifying new Life in this trailer
What happens when two Hollywood hunks—in this case, Ryan Reynolds and Jake Gyllenhaal—end up on a the International Space Station with a malevolent alien? The trailer for Life presumes you’ll want to find out. (It doesn’t look good.) Gyllenhaal appears to be the quiet, potentially menacing astronaut, while Reynolds assumes his natural role as the wisecracking member of the crew. That’s fitting since the screenplay comes from Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who seem to have an ample supply of bon mots for the actor. Ultimately, this looks like it takes itself far more seriously than that superhero flick. After all, it uses John F. Kennedy’s moon speech to underscore the promo. Mission: Impossible’s Rebecca Ferguson, Olga Dihovichnaya, Ariyon Bakare, and Hiroyuki Sanada are also on board. Life is due out May 26, 2017.
