WME Independent has been fielding offers from interested distributors ever since Together‘s premiere screening on the 26th, and Deadline reports that all of the major buyers of indie fare were in the mix.

Luke Hemsworth has joined the cast of Australian cop comedy Deadloch‘s second season on Prime Video.

The actor has been filming in his native Australia, joining leads Kate Box, Madeleine Sami, Nina Oyama and Alicia Gardiner in the comedy series, which has been hit for Amazon’s streaming service.

Hemsworth will play Jason Wade, creator and star of ‘Jason Wade’s Adventures Down Under’ and the owner of ‘Jason Wade’s Land of Crocs and Other Animals’ Wildlife Park.

The show follows Dulcie (Box) and Eddie (Sami), a pair of mismatched detectives. In the new season, they are investigating the death of Eddie’s former policing partner, Bushy. When a body is discovered in a remote town, they are flung into a new sweatier, stickier investigation.

Filming has wrapped in the croc-infested waters of the Northern Territories and moved to Brisbane’s studios in Queensland.

Breakout Australia comedy Colin From Accounts is back in production.

An official green light of Season 2 of the hit Binge sitcom came in August, after writers and stars Patrick Brammall and Harriet Dyer chose to down their pens in solidarity with WGA strike in the U.S. over the summer.

Exec producer Alison Hurbert-Burns from Binge told Deadline in October production would begin in “coming months,” adding: “As an Australian program it was outside of the strike, but they just felt it was the right thing to do.”

Brammall and Dyer finished the scripts once a deal was struck at the end of September. Production is now back underway across Sydney, with Easy Tiger Productions and CBS Studios returning the produce.

“The Twelve,” an award-winning Australian crime drama series, has been greenlighted for a second season. It is backed by the Foxtel group and its streaming brand Binge.

The show follows a controversial murder trial seen through the lens of the jurors, twelve ordinary Australians who are facing their own realities and struggles.

The first season received ten nominations, and won three Aacta Awards in 2022 including best miniseries. In recent days, it became the most nominated drama series at the 63rd TV Week Logie Awards.

Season two of “The Twelve” will be eight 1-hour episodes written by Sarah Walker, Anchuli Felicia King, Anya Beyersdorf and Anna Barnes. Local authorities in Western Australia described it as the state’s “biggest-ever screen production,” but divulged no specifics on budget. Filming will take place in the Wheatbelt and Metropolitan regions and create over 100 local jobs, the state government said.

Production has begun in Brisbane, Australia, on dramatic comedy film “A Savage Christmas.”

The story is that of a trans woman who, after years of estrangement, returns home for Christmas with her new boyfriend. Expecting her transition to be the focus, it is instead overshadowed by family secrets and lies which threaten not only their lives but another Christmas lunch.

The film is written, directed and produced by feature debutant Madeleine Dyer, who has pitched it as stylistically resembling “Death at a Funeral” and “Silver Linings Playbook.” Screen Australia’s head of content Grainne Brunsdon said the film “blends off-beat humor while reflecting our nation’s diversity.” Dyer co-wrote the screenplay with Daniel Mulvihill and Max Jahufer.

The film is also the debut production from Roaring Entertainment, a newly formed company by Brisbane-based producers Ben McNeill and Mulvihill.

M-Net Greenlights Season Two Of Fremantle Mystery Thriller ‘Reyka’

Iain Glen and Kim Engelbrecht will return for a second season of South Africa’s M-Net crime thriller series Reyka. Production on the Fremantle co-production, from writer Rohan Dickson, will begin early next year ahead of a late 2023 season launch. Season one of the show followed the titular Reyka (Engelbrecht) as a crime profiler hunting an elusive killer in KwaZulu-Natal’s sugarcane fields. Lemohang Tsipa and Samkelo Ndlovu are joining the cast for season two, which centers around couples who are attacked on the docks of Durban. Serena Cullen of Serena Cullen Productions in the UK (Lady Chatterley’s Lover) and Harriet Gavshon produce for Quizzical Pictures, with Serena Cullen, Gavshon Dickson, Nomsa Philiso, Jan du Plessis and Julie Hodge the executive producers.

Disney+ unveiled the starring cast of its upcoming Australian period drama The Artful Dodger Wednesday at its Asia-Pacific content showcase event in Singapore. Thomas Brodie-Sangster (Pistol, The Queen’s Gambit), David Thewlis (Landscapers, Fargo) and Australian actress Maia Mitchell (Good Trouble, The Fosters) will lead the cast, with Brodie-Sangster taking on the role of Jack Dawkins, aka “The Artful Dodger” himself, Thewlis playing Fagin and Mitchell as Lady Belle Fox.

The Artful Dodger, which was first announced in May, is described as an international character-driven drama set in 1850s Australia, which gives a twist to the classic Charles Dickens character, Dodger. Georgia Flood and Thierry Frémont have joined Disney Plus original U.K. series “Nautilus.”

The series, inspired by Julie Verne’s novel “20,000 Leagues Under The Sea,” stars Shazad Latif (“Star Trek: Discovery”) in the lead role. Shooting is underway in Australia’s Queensland-based Village Roadshow Studios.

The series switches the viewpoint on Verne’s classic story, giving viewers the chance to see things from Captain Nemo’s point of view for the first time. Nemo is an Indian Prince who is removed from his home, family and birthright and taken prisoner by the East India Mercantile Company.

Melbourne-based production company Truce Films has optioned the new book from Graeme Simsion, author of The Rosie Project.

Released as an Audible Original in September, Creative Differences follows the relationship between Emily, an aspiring literary writer, and Scott, a jobbing screenwriter.

Combining his punchy plot and her luminous prose, they crafted an international hit – and fell in love doing it. Three years later, Scott’s subsequent solo novel flops and Emily struggles with her literary manuscript, straining their relationship.

Director Bec Peniston Bird, who recently worked on Jack Irish, is attached to the project. She has previously collaborated with Simsion on short films, and the pair are early readers of each other’s work.

The editors behind Nitram, I Met A Girl, The Furnace and June Again will compete for this year’s Ellie Award for Best Editing in Feature Drama, while the television drama category will be a contest between those who cut Wakefield, The Tailings, Jack Irish, Eden and Bump.

The annual awards of the Australian Screen Editors (Ase) will be held in early February with the hope that travel restrictions between states will have eased.

“It’s been a tough two years and we think we all deserve to be together in person to celebrate these fine achievements in editing, and the results of everybody’s hard work during such difficult times,” Ase president Danielle Boesenberg tells If.

In addition to the feature film prize, I Met A Girl editor Melanie Annan will also be in contention for Best Editing in Documentary and Series for Three Songs for Benazir, shared with Christoph Wermke.

Aacta has revealed those in contention for the major film, television and short-form prizes at this year’s awards, with High Ground leading the charge in the film categories and The Newsreader ahead in television.

The nominations follow those revealed for feature documentary in July, with the technical craft categories still to come.

Aacta also announced today that this year’s awards will move from The Star to the Sydney Opera House, with the ceremony to be held December 8.

There has also been a change in broadcast partners from Seven to 10, where the ceremony will air first followed by an encore on Fox Arena on Foxtel, Binge, and Aacta TV.

The Italian Cultural Institute in London, La Biennale di Venezia and Curzon have teamed for ‘From Venice to London,’ a season where seven films from Venezia 78 will be shown at Curzon cinemas across London from Nov. 18-22.

“The Lost Daughter,” directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal will open the season and “The Hand of God,” directed by Paolo Sorrentino, will close it. The other selections include “Qui rido io,” directed by Mario Martone; “La santa piccola, directed by Silvia Brunelli, “La ragazza ha volato, directed by Wilma Labate,” “Il buco,” directed by Michelangelo Frammartino; and “Ariaferma,” directed by Leonardo Di Costanzo.

President of the Venice Biennale Roberto Cicutto said: “This year the selection has been praised for its exceptional artistic quality. We are sure the London audience will appreciate its high calibre.”

One of the best things about the proliferation of streaming services is that we can finally watch some of the best foreign programming in the US without needing it to be Americanized.

We had a chance to talk about that and a lot more with Marta Dusseldorp, who has had several programs airing on Acorn TV, where the final episode of the final season of Jack Irish, in which she costars with Guy Pierce, drops today.

The second season of the Australian crime series Jack Irish, starring the magnetic Guy Pearce, is finally set to get a home entertainment release in the UK.

Pearce has continued to make huge waves in essential films and TV series since his lauded turn in L.A. Confidential back in 1997. Most recently he was seen in the massive HBO crime drama Mare of Easttown with Kate Winslet, which benefitted greatly from his roguish charm. In this new season, Guy Pearce reprises his iconic role as Jack Irish, former criminal lawyer, and part-time debt collector, with a penchant for getting wrapped up in things he shouldn’t in this gripping Australian crime series.

In season two, Jack stumbles into a world of corrupt educational institutions aimed at international students. The apparent suicide of a foreign student triggers a chain of events that sees Jack risking his life to uncover the truth.

Screen Canberra has opened applications for its annual Screen Pod program, a five-month market-centred initiative with aims to assist writers of diverse backgrounds in generating, developing, and pitching a screen project.

Participants receive story and market feedback via a workshop environment, as well as mentoring and coaching to improve the marketability of their project and skills as a practitioner.

While previously alternating annually between film and TV, this year’s Screen Pod will be platform-agnostic, broken up into three streams.

The first, Process, sees a combination of lecture-based training modules and practical exercises in group workshops.

The second stage, Project, sees writers develop specific projects with the market in mind, assisted by fellow writers and developers.

The final stage is Pitch, with participants to hone their pitching skills and build confidence, in group simulations as well as real-life pitching opportunities.

This builds to a pitching finale, where participants conduct one-on-one presentations to market representatives.

Award-winning author Paul McAuley’s acclaimed science fiction novel “Austral” is set for an epic series adaptation from Circle of Confusion Television Studios and ITV Studios’ Big Talk Productions.

“Austral” is an expansive drama set in Antarctica during the year 2098, decades after the melting glaciers have given way to a new frontier of resource-rich land, and a generation of settlers from all around the dying world have converged there. But for Austral Ferrado, one of a number of “huskies,” or people who have been gene-edited to better withstand the still-unforgiving climate of the far south, this new Antarctica is no paradise. Trapped in a society that has imprisoned her and treated her kind more as animals than humans, Austral will stop at nothing to gain her freedom.

Elise McCredie — Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts screenplay award winner for Cate Blanchett-produced series “Stateless” — will adapt the novel, while Erik Skjoldbjaerg (“Occupied”) will direct.

“This was a long-planned strategic move in order to do what I love best: not only creating and developing shows but writing on them too,” Turk tells If.
