Marvel editor Tom Brevoort has called out the fatal flaw in a beloved superhero franchise, going so far as to call it an inherent problem. The Runaways, launched in the early 2000s, quickly became a cult title, and before long, it was a breakout hit. Yet even despite a television show, the property has struggled to find its footing in recent years, and Brevoort has a theory as to why.
Brian K. Vaughan's other credits include Y The Last Man, Ex Machina and Saga; Adrian Alphona would co-create arguably Marvel's greatest teen hero: Kamala Khan.
Tom Brevoort, in his weekly Substack newsletter Man With a Hat, fielded questions from fans on a variety of topics. Brevoort had previously answered a question about Young Avengers. Fan Andrew Albrecht asked a follow-up question. Albrecht was curious if Brevoort had ever worked on Runaways, and if he was a fan of the concept.

To lift a title from kids’ novelist Wilson Rawls, this has become the Summer of the Monkeys.
Before we get to HBO’s Chimp Crazy and Netflix’s Secret Lives of Orangutans, devotees of the simian arts will be treated to Apple TV+’s Bad Monkey, a Carl Hiaasen adaptation from the streamer’s comedy patron saint, Bill Lawrence (Ted Lasso, Shrinking).
Contrary to the show and novel’s name, the eponymous monkey is not, in fact, bad. Played by veteran animal thespian Crystal — you know her from Community, The Fabelmans and more — she is, in fact, quite good, reliable for reactive cutaways or wild, furry hijinks. She (actually, Crystal is playing a character who seems to identify as male, but we are not going down the path of monkey pronouns here) doesn’t always feel particularly connected to the plot of Bad Monkey, but it’s charming and fun just to have her around.

Days of Our Lives saw the exit of Nicole (Arianne Zucker) and Eric (Greg Vaughan) on Monday’s (July 29) episode, but it seems Vaughan wasn’t ready to say goodbye to Salem just yet. After Monday’s episode, Vaughan took to social media, where he shared a series of Instagram Stories. In the final post (which has since expired), the actor wrote, “I didn’t leave by choice. I never had a choice,” followed by a broken heart emoji. Fans had been anticipating Zucker’s departure since news of her contract not being renewed became public last year. In February, Zucker filed a lawsuit against the show and Corday Productions for “wrongful termination.” She alleges that former producer Albert Allar sexually harassed her and other female employees on the show, which led to her being dismissed from the soap. However, Vaughan’s exit came as more of a surprise. The...

Clive Owen has not forgotten his roots. Growing up in a working-class family in Coventry in the 1970s U.K., he yearned to explore different roles in life — and the youth wing of the city’s civic Belgrade Theatre gave him that opportunity.
More than four decades later, Owen — who most recently appeared in “Monsieur Spade” as an aging Sam Spade drawn back into the game to solve a post-World War II murder mystery in the south of France — credits that experience as the foundation for his career.
“That is where it all started for me — joining the youth theater was a life changer for me,” he tells Variety at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival in the Czech Republic, where he receives the President’s Award Saturday night. “The city is still a very tough one, and places like the youth theater are a lifeline for kids like me to...

Exclusive: Fifth Season-backed The Story Collective (Tsc) has taken a 25% stake in The Mallorca Files co-producer Cosmopolitan Pictures, which has ambitions to be a “European hub” for projects that can traverse borders, its boss has said.
Cosmopolitan is run by Ben Donald, a former colleague of Tsc founders Damian Keogh, Simon Vaughan and Helen Jackson from their BBC Studios tenure, and has quietly made a name for itself in recent years backing drama projects that punch above their weight across Europe. It is probably best known for The Mallorca Files, which it makes with Baby Reindeer producer Clerkenwell Films and is about to launch its third season on Prime Video, along with Rai’s Per Elisa: il Caso Claps, which scooped the grand prize at the recent AVPSummit.
The company has projects in development with French, German, Italian and Scandinavian buyers, and is developing a pair of series in France based on Vanity Fair articles.

If you're like me, you often wonder why there aren't more erotic thrillers about car crashes. Ok, maybe I don't ever wonder that, but after David Cronenberg's largely forgotten 1996 masterpiece Crash just screened at Beyond Fest in Los Angeles County, it's hard to shake the turnt-up feeling you get after watching the original Nc-17 version. Wait, did it get the new MPAA rating because new scenes were since added? No, they were there in the first place, but the producers at the time held the key to the nude scenes that were removed from the finished product in order to get a more audience-suited R-rating — for the sake of box-office success, of course.
Mission accomplished? No. Cronenberg was ahead of his time, and if Crash were released today to theaters everywhere with the sexy Nc-17 rating slapped on, who knows how many dollars it'd rake in? Makes you think.

The retired Rms Queen Mary docked in Long Beach, California is considered one of the most haunted locations in the world — which only somewhat shines through in Gary Shore’s Haunting of the Queen Mary. Any wishes to relive Dark Castle Entertainment levels of production design in Ghost Ship won’t be fulfilled, but that said, Haunting of the Queen Mary is more successful than its brushed-under-the-rug release undersells. Shore and co-writer Tom Vaughan channel the Queen Mary’s grave history for a supernatural infestation that spans decades, complete with atmospheric haunts akin to what’s accomplished in remakes of Thir13en Ghosts or House on Haunted Hill. Proper spookiness prevails, even though the over two-hour length gunks up the film’s gears with subplots that slow momentum.
Alice Eve stars as Anne Calder, who pitches Queen Mary’s Captain Bittner (Dorian Lough) on a virtual 3D tour experience to resurrect the ship’s reputation.

Nema and Tango, the new cat stars in The Marvels, bring unique personalities and talents to the movie, with Nema excelling at stunts and Tango's good looks being perfect for close-ups. Filming with cats can be unpredictable and amusingly wild, as one cat started rolling around in the gravelly set, not exactly the action the scene called for. Brie Larson's allergy to cats posed a challenge, requiring her to be replaced by an extra or a stunt double on days when Nema and Tango were on set. The rigorous training the cats underwent paid off in their performances. Get ready to be enamored by superheroes and charismatic felines when The Marvels hits theaters on Nov. 10, 2023.
The Marvels, the highly-anticipated sequel in the Marvel cinematic universe, brings more than just superheroes to the big screen. Among the stars are Nema and Tango, two felines with charisma that rivals any A-lister.

The Marvels will have two new cat actors alternating in the role of Goose, each having a uniquely fickle personality that has made filming livelier on the set.
Nema and Tango are the two new felines acting as Goose in The Marvels, but fans who first saw the orange tabby alien in Captain Marvel might not notice anything different. /Film reports these cats were hired because director Nia DaCosta was looking for personality traits absent from the four felines previously hired to play Goose in Captain Marvel. Cat trainer Jo Vaughan said that Nemo was hired for stunt work while Tango was hired as eye candy. It’s safe to say that Tango will hog all of the close-up shots in the movie.

In Anna Boden's and Ryan Fleck's 2019 superhero film "Captain Marvel," the title character (Brie Larson) has a cat she named Goose. Goose, a Garfield-like orange tabby, was named after the character played by Anthony Edwards in the 1986 film "Top Gun." But it would later be revealed that Goose was not a cat at all, but a shape-shifting alien creature called a flerkin, a voracious squid-like alien that can swallow human-sized prey whole before returning to the size of a house cat, presumably digesting its meals very, very quickly. It was Goose that scratched Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) across his eye, leaving him wearing his signature eyepatch.
According to a 2019 piece in Collider, "Captain Marvel" hired four different cat actors to play Goose throughout the film. Their names were Gonzo, Rizzo, Archie, and Reggie. One of them was hired because it has good at being held, one had the most attractive cat face,...

London, Aug 1 (Ians) Former England captain Michael Vaughan has praised Ben Stokes for his leadership of the Test team and believes the all-rounder has got the potential to become one of the greatest leaders in the side’s cricketing history.
Under Stokes’ captaincy, England bounced back from being 2-0 down to drawing 2-2 with Australia in a remarkable turnaround in the recently-concluded Ashes series, which ended with the hosts’ winning by 49 runs at The Oval.
England could have easily won the series 3-2 if the Manchester Test, where they dominated majorly, hadn’t ended in a draw due to rain. “He’s only been doing the job for 14 months but already he is right up there among England’s greatest ever captains. I think in time he will be hailed as England’s greatest ever Test captain.”

New Delhi, July 24 (Ians) Former England captain Michael Vaughan described the Australian cricket team as fortunate in retaining the Ashes, pointing out that rain helped the visitors.
The entire final day of the fourth Test was lost due to rain in Manchester on Sunday and the drawn match. The result means that the Ashes urn will be headed back to Australia regardless of the outcome in the fifth Test of an enthralling series at The Oval that starts on Thursday.
England needed five wickets to force a win with Australia needing 61 runs to force the hosts into batting again. The Ben Stokes-led side was in a dominant position for the majority of the match, but they were denied a crack at victory due to rain not allowing any play to happen on day five.

Manchester, July 23 (Ians) Former captain Michael Vaughan believes that if England manage to secure a victory on the final day of the fourth Ashes 2023 Test on Sunday, they will be in a favorable position to win the series.
After rain allowed only 30 overs of play on Saturday, Australia will resume their innings on 214-5, 61 runs behind on Day 5. If England take five quick wickets on Sunday, they will be able to level the series before heading into the crucial fifth Test next week at The Oval.
Highlighting the importance of day five, Vaughan told BBC’s Test Match Special that it will “decide the series”.

New Delhi, July 18 (Ians) Moeen Ali has called Michael Vaughan to take an active role in English cricket’s battle against racism as he opened up publicly for the first time on a controversial tweet from the former captain that suggested the England all-rounder should inquire whether young Muslims are terrorists to enhance societal safety.
In 2017, Adil Ray asked Vaughan on Twitter whether he expected Moeen to go around asking Muslims he didn’t know whether they knew terrorists in between matches. To whichVaughan replied yes, if it helps “our kids’ future and environment become a safer place”.
In a documentary named ‘Is Cricket Racist?’, when Moeen was asked by Ray what he thought of Vaughan’s tweets from 2017, the all-rounder described Vaughan’s views as “very silly and dumb”, while insisting that cricket needs people like him to step up in the fight against racism.

London, June 4 (Ians) Former England captain Michael Vaughan has advised Australia to follow Ireland’s move of attacking left-arm spinner Jack Leach and implement the same in the upcoming Ashes series.
