Image
Ted Lasso is gearing up for its fourth season, and fans are eager to see what news stories and characters this installment of the show will bring along. While the show has shown a beautiful blend of its ensemble cast, some characters may have been sidelined a bit, leaving the audience curious about their stories.

While the ensemble cast, which is pivotal to the narrative, like Ted, Rebecca, Kent, Keeley, Nate, and Leslie, have enough screen time and their stories have been explored amply, there are a few characters, hidden gems if you may, that we want explored better.

With the narrative of the show expanding this season, it may be time to go back to some of these characters and offer fresh perspectives to their stories. Along the way, there could be some unexpected curveballs and dynamics that we would least expect. Let’s dive into what characters we...

‘Ted Lasso’: This Forgotten Character’s Return in Season 4 Could Shatter Rebecca’s New Life
Image
With season 4 of Ted Lasso upon us, speculations about what’s to happen next with the AFC Richmond family are afloat. While the primary focus for many lies on what happens next with Ted, the team, and his family, there are other possible turns of events that could give the story a whole new dimension.

One such twist could be the return of Rupert Mannion, Rebecca’s ex-husband and the former Richmond team boss. If the writers do choose to bring Rupert back, it would be an interesting play of power to be witnessed between Rebecca and him.

How Rupert’s return in Ted Lasso season 4 could be a huge setback for Rebecca’s progress

Hannah Waddingham as Rebecca has come into her own throughout the show, and her personality shines strongly. If Rupert returns, there will be an obvious tussle between the two, and the shift of dynamics will be with serious consequences.

Netflix’s ‘Four Seasons’ Trailer Puts a Strain on Several Marriages
Image
The three couples at the center of Netflix’s comedy series The Four Seasons are going through it.

The trailer for the series, released Tuesday morning, shows the star-studded cast — Tina Fey, Will Forte, Steve Carell, Kerri Kenney-Silver, Colman Domingo and Marco Calvani — both relishing the time their group spends together and chafing at the boundaries of their marriages. In the latter category, Carell notes that he and his wife (Kenney-Silver) “sit in the same room monitoring different screens. We’re like co-workers at a nuclear facility.”

The trailer also reveals that it’s Carell’s character who splits up with his wife (Kenney-Silver) to be with a younger woman (Erika Henningsen) — in keeping with the plot of the 1981 movie on which The Four Seasons is based. Watch the trailer below.

The description for The Four Seasons reads, “Six old friends head for a relaxing weekend away only to learn...

10 Life Lessons Ted Lasso Taught Us With Heart And Humor
Rupert
If there’s one thing Ted Lasso gave us—aside from gut-busting laughs and the occasional happy tears—it’s a treasure trove of life lessons wrapped in warm, feel-good moments. Ted, with his unwavering optimism and knack for finding the good in everyone, dropped little nuggets of wisdom all throughout the show. Some of them were funny, some were profound, but all of them made us think about life in a new way.

Here are ten of the best lessons from Ted Lasso, complete with a little storytelling magic.

1. Be A Goldfish

Remember when Sam messed up during training, hanging his head in frustration? Ted walked over and hit him with:

“Do you know what the happiest animal in the world is? A goldfish. You know why? It’s got a ten-second memory. Be a goldfish, Sam.”

Short. Simple. Powerful. How often do we dwell on our mistakes, letting them haunt us?...

Steve Carell, Colman Domingo, Tina Fey, Will Forte, Kerri Kenney, Marco Calvani, and Erika Henningsen in The Four Seasons (2025)
Netflix and Tina Fey’s ‘Four Seasons’ Gets Premiere Date, Releases First Teaser
Steve Carell, Colman Domingo, Tina Fey, Will Forte, Kerri Kenney, Marco Calvani, and Erika Henningsen in The Four Seasons (2025)
Netflix’s star-studded series The Four Seasons is set to join the already crowded spring TV calendar.

The series, starring and co-created by Tina Fey, is set to premiere May 1. The show is an adaptation of the 1981 movie written, directed by and starring Alan Alda (who’s a producer and guest star of the new version) and centers on three couples — played by Fey and Will Forte, Steve Carell and Kerry Kinney-Silver, and Colman Domingo and Marco Calvani — who vacation together and are thrown when one of the couples announces they’re divorcing.

Along with announcing the premiere date, Netflix released a teaser for the show; watch it below.

Netflix won a bidding war for the series (which was a hot commodity coming out of 2023’s labor strikes) and gave the show a straight-to-series order in early 2024. Universal Television, where Fey and her Little Stranger company are based, produces The Four Seasons.

Tina Fey Berated Conan O’Brien for Humiliating Her Husband
Image
At a recent Saturday Night Live event, Conan O’Brien ran into Tina Fey and her husband, composer, comedian and Second City alum Jeff Richmond. While Richmond has won multiple Emmys and scored a Tony nomination for his prodigious musical work, O’Brien remembers him for something else: a bare-chested bit on his late-night show back in 2001.

Conaco

Richmond is “very brilliant” and “incredibly successful,” O’Brien told Amy Poehler this week on his Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend podcast. But in his mind’s eye, O’Brien only sees Richmond “in a diaper hanging on a rope with a bow and arrow, you know, and some glitter in his hair and no shirt. And he is just spinning at rehearsal, awkwardly.”

O’Brien said he had no idea who Richmond was at the time — just another bit player hired for a comedy sketch — but he found out when Tina Fey stopped by the studio.

Dennis Richmond Dies: Longtime Bay Area News Anchor Was 81
Image
Legendary Bay Area news anchor Dennis Richmond, one of the nation’s first Black anchors of a major market TV newscast who spent 40 years with Oakland’s Ktvu, died Wednesday, the station announced. He was 81.

Friends told Ktvu that Richmond died in Grass Valley, CA, with his wife, Deborah, at his side. A cause of death was not revealed, but Richmond’s longtime co-anchor, Julie Haener, now retired, told Ktvu that he had suffered a heart attack and fall weeks before. “He was a fighter,” she said. “He held on for as long as he could. He was so respected,” she said.

“Dennis was a strong presence in the Ktvu newsroom for decades, guiding the team and setting high standards for himself and his colleagues in everything they did,” Ktvu General Manager Mellynda Hartel said. “His impact is still felt in the Ktvu newsroom today.”

'Ted Lasso' Actor Reveals Apple TV+ Series Has 3 More Seasons Planned
Image
With how long Apple TV+'s Ted Lasso could run for, we might literally be Richmond 'till we die. Actor Moe Jeudy-Lamour, who plays Thierry Zoreaux aka Van Damme/Zorro in the hit soccer series, starring Jason Sudeikis as the titular coach, might have just accidentally revealed Apple's plans for renewing Ted Lasso... and the streamer is going for a hat trick. Ted Lasso first debuted in 2020 and ran for three seasons, coming to a close in 2023 with a heartbreaking final season. Many fans assumed that Season 3 was the last, considering Ted left AFC Richmond to be with his son in America. Series star Nick Mohammed recently got fans riled up for an AFC Richmond comeback, with a potential fourth season. However, Apple's plans seem to be much bigger than that.

Jeudy-Lamour recently let it slip in an interview (which was shared on X by @stuckinrevmode) that Apple TV...

General Hospital Alum Tequan Richmond Lands Part in Major Film Sequel
Image
Tj and Molly are headed for Splitsville on General Hospital. But while this iteration of Tj navigates the troubling emotions caused by the death of their surrogate baby, his original portrayer, Tequan Richmond, has been navigating an entirely different path. From 2012 to 2018, he played Tj Ashford, and he left because he got a starring role in Boomerang, a TV show sequel/reboot to Eddie Murphy’s 1992 comedy film of the same name. Now, he’s appearing in another sequel of sorts to a film by another famous comedian.

Millions Are at Stake

1985’s Brewster’s Millions starred iconic comedian Richard Pryor and the late comic John Candy. The film was based on the 1902 novel by George Barr McCutcheon and was a remake of the 1945 film starring Dennis O’Keefe. In it, Pryor plays Montgomery Brewster, a baseball player who stands to inherit $300 million if he can spend $30 million in a month, but...

Ryan Reynolds Thinks Eddie Murphy Should Have Gotten an Oscar for Nutty Professor
Image
Ryan Reynolds thinks one of Eddie Murphy's comedic performances was overlooked by the Academy. During a recent appearance on Variety's Awards Circuit podcast, the Deadpool & Wolverine actor shared that Murphy not receiving an Oscar nod for his multi-character work on The Nutty Professor is one of the "greatest, most, greatest injustices." When asked what he considered the greatest Oscars snub of all time, Reynolds shared:

"One of the greatest, most, greatest injustices is that Eddie Murphy doesn't have an Oscar for 'The Nutty Professor.'"

The Murphy-led comedy is a remake of the 1963 movie of the same name that starred Jerry Lewis. Directed by Tom Shadyac, the 1996 version sees Murphy tackle seven different roles, including Professor Sherman Klump and his charming but devious alter ego Buddy Love. The film earned mostly positive reviews from critics (and currently holds a 66% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), who praised Murphy for his hilarious portrayals.

How Rebel Ridge Flipped the Revenge Genre on Its Head
Image
Jeremy Saulnier's new film, Rebel Ridge, hit Netflix in September 2024 and became one of the streaming service's most critically acclaimed films of recent memory. At the time of this writing, it has an incredible 96% fresh rating and has spent weeks at the number one spot on Netflix's Top 10 movies. To say this was an unexpected result would be something of an understatement. Saulnier has made some incredible films before, but none have resonated as strongly as this.

To understand why Rebel Ridge has become one of the year's breakout hits, we've got to look at the gap created when audience expectations cultivated from a lifetime of watching movies are surprisingly upended, resulting in a unique viewing experience that feels fresh and new. That's the magic trick that Jeremy Saulnier performed here: taking what should have been your average everyday revenge thriller and turning it into something much more.

Why Did John Boyega Exit Netflix's 'Rebel Ridge'?
Image
Rebel Ridge seemingly came out of nowhere to become the biggest thing on Netflix the last few weeks. Directed by Jeremy Saulnier, Rebel Ridge feels a lot like a modern Rambo, with Aaron Pierre playing Terry Richmond, a Marine out to save his cousin and expose the corrupt police force led by Chief Sandy Burne (Don Johnson). It was a star-making performance for Pierre, but it almost didn't happen. Another actor, one much more famous, was first cast to play Richmond. John Boyega was going to be the lead in Rebel Ridge, but during filming, Boyega left under mysterious circumstances, leading Saulnier to wonder if his film was done.

Stephen King Hails Netflix’s ‘Rebel Ridge’ as “Thinking Man’s Rambo”
Stephen King at an event for Un crime dans la tête (2004)
Renowned author Stephen King has praised the Netflix action thriller “Rebel Ridge” on social media. King called the film “one of the best” original movies on the streaming service.

Directed by Jeremy Saulnier, “Rebel Ridge” follows Terry Richmond, a former Marine embroiled in a conflict with corrupt local authorities. Aaron Pierre stars as Richmond, who aims to expose wrongdoing without using violence.

“Rebel Ridge” has attracted widespread attention since its release. On Netflix’s viewing chart, the movie has maintained the top spot for over a week. According to King, the film presents “a thinking man’s approach” to the action genre.

Though production faced challenges, Saulnier remained dedicated to the project. When lead actor John Boyega left for personal reasons, Saulnier took control of all aspects to complete the film. Critics note Saulnier skillfully addresses issues like racial injustice and policing through Richmond’s restraint.

King’s praise brings...

Rebel Ridge's Subtle Reference To A 51-Year-Old Al Pacino Movie Foreshadows The Ending Twist
Image
Almost midway through its runtime, Rebel Ridge features a subtle nod to a 51-year-old highly acclaimed Al Pacino movie, which foreshadows its biggest ending twist. Directed by Jeremy Saulnier, Rebel Ridge has performed incredibly well among critics and has an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 95%. Although the film follows a familiar narrative structure that has previously been adopted by several action movies, it etches its own identity in the genre by making its thematic elements and political explorations realistic and relatable.

The film's primary narrative revolves around a former Marine who arrives in a small town to bail his cousin out of prison. However, a war gradually brews between him and the local police force when two police officers unfairly seize his money on the grounds of civil asset forfeiture. While unfolding this story, Rebel Ridge also introduces parallels to an Al Pacino movie, which adds another layer of realism to its action drama.

6 Ways Rebel Ridge Sets Up A Sequel
Image
Netflix's Rebel Ridge seemingly has a well-rounded story, but it paves the way for a potential sequel in more ways than one. Directed by Jeremy Saulnier, Rebel Ridge faced several production challenges before it landed on Netflix. Its production started in 2019 but was delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Two years later, when the movie's filming was finally about to begin, it faced another pitfall when John Boyega, initially cast to play its leading role, backed off from the project.

Fortunately, the third time was a charm for Rebel Ridge after its filming ensued soon after Aaron Pierre was cast as John Boyega's replacement. Although Rebel Ridge took some time to see the light of day, Jeremy Saulnier's patience paid dividends since the film not only has an impressive critical score of 95% on Rotten Tomatoes but has also been trending on Netflix. Since Netflix seemingly needs a successful action franchise under its belt,...

Quick Links Seizing Money From a Former Marine in Rebel Ridge Is Terry Richmond Based on a Real Person? Civil Asset Forfeiture Goes Back to the 1600s

With just four previous films under his belt, director Jeremy Saulnier has only strengthened his feature film lineup with 2024s Rebel Ridge. Some are calling the Netflix exclusive movie a more slow-burning and calculative take on Prime Videos widely popular Reacher series. Others applaud actor Aaron Pierres take on the main character of Terry Richmond, a man who takes action against the corrupt local police but without using lethal force. Saulniers latest may be defined as an action thriller, and rightly so, but visually and thematically speaking, it is much more than that. Not only does the cinematography at certain points elevate Rebel Ridge out of the oversaturated genre (with numerous slow-tracking camera sequences and one-shot takes), but the introductory and shocking premise...

‘Rebel Ridge’ Writer/Director Jeremy Saulnier Unpacks the Long Road to His Netflix Hit
Image
“Rebel Ridge” is the #1 movie on Netflix right now.

In its first week of release the movie, which stars Aaron Pierre as a former Marine who heads to a small town to post bail for his cousin and finds himself in an increasingly labyrinthine conspiracy, amassed a whopping 31.2 million views (according to Netflix). It also won killer reviews, including our own review, which described the movie as “exciting, engaging, stimulating entertainment.” Plus, every cool kid you follow on Letterboxd is watching, rating and talking about it. Just look.

And this kind of universal acceptance and acclaim would be a feat for any movie, really, but it seems like even more of an accomplishment given the journey that “Rebel Ridge” has been on. This is a movie whose production weathered a Covid-19 shutdown, an abrupt change in the movie’s main cast and a prolonged post-production process.

For writer/director Jeremy Saulnier,...

Of all the movie genres, revenge thrillers are perhaps the most satisfying to watch because, for starters, they offer a sense of catharsis to viewers by walking through a character's pursuit of seeking justice after being wronged. At the same time, well-written, acclaimed revenge thrillers also provide some moral clarity by featuring characters who either stop midway through their revenge-fueled journeys or go a little too far before digging two graves.

It is also hard not to feel a semblance of empowerment while watching underestimated or marginalized characters rise to the occasion to seek revenge by finally putting their foot down against injustice. For all these reasons, a new action movie on Netflix is a compelling watch. However, other than merely riffing on the well-worn tropes of the revenge thriller genre,...

I Was Wrong About Netflix's New Rambo & Reacher Action Movie "Replacement"
Image
After initially assuming that a new Netflix film could be Rambo and Jack Reacher's perfect movie replacement, I have come to realize that I was wrong. A few weeks ago, I came across a trailer for an upcoming Netflix movie, which caught my attention because of how familiar it seemed. Once I was done watching the trailer, I was almost convinced that the Netflix film would riff on the tropes and storytelling devices that have made action franchises like Rambo and Jack Reacher successful.

Since I have an undying appetite for shows and movies that revolve around overpowered protagonists like Jack Reacher and Rambo who single-handedly take down formidable adversaries, I was excited by the prospect of a new entry into this brand of action movies. However, when I finally watched the Netflix action movie, Rebel Ridge, I was surprised by how well it stood on its own despite adopting some familiar genre archetypes.

6 Reasons Rebel Ridge's Reviews Are So Great
Image
Warning! This post contains spoilers for Netflix's Rebel Ridge.

There are seven solid reasons why Rebel Ridge is receiving almost unanimous praise from viewers and critics and boasts an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 95%. Directed by Jeremy Saulnier, Rebel Ridge presents a compelling hook in its opening moments, where a former marine, Terry Richmond, enters a small town and gets rammed off the road by a police vehicle. With what follows, things only get worse for Richmond after the police officers seize the money he wanted to use to bail his cousin out of prison.

The deeper Terry delves into figuring out how he can get his money back, the more he learns about the central town's dark underbelly of systemic corruption. As Rebel Ridge's storyline suggests, it dabbles with familiar themes and tried and tested tropes of the action genre. However, the way the Netflix action movie...

Jeremy Saulnier's New Netflix Action Thriller Brilliantly Breaks His Best Movie Trend After 17 Years
Image
Warning! This post contains spoilers for Netflix's Rebel Ridge.

Jeremy Saulnier's movies are known for following one interesting trend, but his new critically acclaimed Netflix movie brilliantly breaks away from his usual style of storytelling. After working as the cinematographer in 2006's Hamilton, Jeremy Saulnier made his directorial debut in 2007 with Murder Party. The film not only won the Audience Award for Best Feature at the 2007 Slamdance Film Festival but also went on to earn acclaim from several viewers and critics.

Following his debut, Saulnier directed the revenge thriller film Blue Ruin, which further established him as a talented filmmaker after earning an impressive Rotten Tomatoes score of 96%. The director continued his successful run with Green Room in 2015, which failed to leave its mark at the box office but received immense acclaim from critics. His 2018 film, Hold the Dark, also mostly received positive reviews, though it was considered...

Where Was Rebel Ridge Filmed? Netflix Thriller's Filming Locations Explained
Image
Warning! This post contains spoilers for Netflix's Rebel Ridge.

Since Rebel Ridge primarily unfolds its story in a small town setting, it becomes hard not to wonder if its central town is a real-world location or a fictional creation. Serving as director Jeremy Saulnier's fifth feature film project, Rebel Ridge hooks a viewer from its opening scene itself, where a former marine, Terry Richmond, gets rammed off the road by two police officers. Instead of apologizing for their actions, the police officers seize his money on the grounds of civil asset forfeiture.

Despite knowing no one in the town, Richmond sets out on a stormy legal journey to acquire the seized money, which he wishes to use to bail his cousin out of prison. However, the undercurrent of corruption that runs through the town constantly tests his patience, eventually forcing him to resort to extreme measures. Since the...

Rebel Ridge is Now Streaming & Debuts Top of Nexflix Global Chart
Image
Rebel Ridge has claimed the top spot on Netflixs global movie chart after dominating headlines as the greatest action movie of the year. While little was heard about the movie after its production troubles in 2021, the film has become a word-of-mouth success on Netflix with a huge debut that many big cinematic blockbusters have failed to achieve.

Rebel Ridge features a strong cast led by Aaron Pierre, AnnaSophia Robb and Don Johnson, and has been masterminded by Jeremy Saulnier, who acts as writer, director, producer and editor on the film. Delivering such a singular vision has clearly paid off, and Rebel Ridge has very quickly gone from being just another Netflix movie to the must-see action thriller of 2024.

Rebel Ridge Ending Explained
Image
Warning! This post contains major spoilers for Netflix's Rebel Ridge.

Although Terry Richmond struggles to find justice throughout Rebel Ridge's runtime, the Netflix film ends on a hopeful note where he wins against the corrupt legal system. Directed by Jeremy Saulnier, Rebel Ridge begins with former Marine Terry Richmond arriving in the small town of Shelby Springs to post bail for his cousin, Mike. However, moments after he enters the town, a police vehicle rams into his bike and two police officers unjustly seize his bail money in the name of civil asset forfeiture.

Despite knowing how the police unfairly snagged his money, Richmond keeps his head low and tries to stay out of trouble. To his dismay, no matter what he does, he does not get the bail money back, preventing him from saving his cousin. Towards the final moments of the Netflix action movie, Richmond reaches...

Rebel Ridge
Image
Blue Ruin and Green Room writer/director Jeremy Saulnier opts not to complete his own three-colour trilogy with Rebel Ridge (‘Red Ridge’ was right there), instead saddling this engaging 21st century riff on First Blood with a banal title that doesn’t do it justice. For Saulnier, though, it must be quite a relief just to get this Netflix project out the door, after the 2020 production was waylaid first by Covid and then by the sudden departure of original star John Boyega. Happily, Aaron Pierre proves a more than capable replacement, shrugging into the skin of a former Marine and enthusiastic cyclist who finds himself firmly at odds with a small-town police department.

After being rammed off his bike by a patrol car for cycling while Black in the Louisiana town of Shelby Springs, Richmond (Pierre) is subjected to a legal if ethically dubious search and seizure, which sees the...

Rebel Ridge Cast & Character Guide
Image
Rebel Ridge not only walks through thrilling action sequences and a compelling crime drama but also features memorable performances from a talented set of actors. Serving as Jeremy Saulnier's fifth feature film, Rebel Ridge is significantly different from the director's previous works. Unlike Blue Ruin, Green Room, Hold the Dark, and Murder Party, Rebel Ridge does not feature graphic violence and relies more on gradually building tension to keep a viewer hooked.

However, despite this, Saulnier's directorial forte is still on full display as he cleverly explores subjects like racism and flawed laws surrounding civil asset forfeiture and misdemeanor sentences. The film's gripping narrative is held together by its cast, which includes both familiar and new faces. Since the cast plays a crucial role in selling Rebel Ridge's crime drama to audiences, viewers may be curious where they know the movie's actors from.

Rebel Ridge Review
Image
Plot: A former marine (Aaron Pierre) takes on the corrupt police force of a small town.

Review: Jeremy Saulnier has always struck me as a talent to watch. From his small-scale debut, Blue Ruin, to his genre breakthrough, Green Room, he’s always had a talent for mixing bone-crunching violence with a surprising amount of soulfulness. While I thought his last film, Hold The Dark, was a mixed bag, it had one incredible shoot-out about mid-way through the movie that made me think that Saulnier, should he ever go that route, would make one heck of a legit action film.

Lucky for us, he went that route.

Rebel Ridge is probably Saulnier’s most conventional and accessible film to date, but it also ranks as one of the most entertaining films Netflix, which is dropping the film this week, has made in some time. Gorgeously shot and featuring a breakout...

Every Character Confirmed To Be Returning For Ted Lasso Season 4
Image
It was recently announced that Ted Lasso is returning for a fourth season, so now, many are wondering who will return for the latest installment of the sports comedy. For three years, Ted Lasso took audiences by storm with its quick wit and heartwarming plotlines. The sitcom tells the story of Ted Lasso, an American football coach who moves to England to coach the soccer team, AFC Richmond. Although Ted Lasso season 3 was intended to be the end of the series, audiences weren't entirely satisfied with the ending. Thus, Ted Lasso season 4 is supposedly in the works.

While the return of Ted Lasso is exciting, there is some risk attached to season 4. Audiences may not have been totally pleased with Ted Lasso season 3's ending, but regardless, it felt like a solid conclusion. Therefore, Ted Lasso season 4 will have to explain why Ted is back and why it matters. Furthermore,...

Jeremy Saulnier Talks Overcoming ‘Rebel Ridge’ Production Hurdles: “I Am Just Basking in the Glow”
Image
For Jeremy Saulnier, all’s well that ends well.

After releasing Hold the Dark in late 2018, Saulnier wasted no time putting together his follow-up Netflix film, Rebel Ridge, in late 2019. But then the pandemic had its way with his April 2020 production schedule, delaying the film’s principal photography until the following spring. However, the once-a-century pandemic turned out to be just the the first of several obstacles, as former lead actor John Boyega abruptly exited the thriller just a month into 2021’s production due to “family reasons.”

Rebel Ridge’s standstill was a frustrating setback for a filmmaker who’d been gaining more and more momentum since relaunching his directorial career with the critically acclaimed Blue Ruin at Cannes in 2013. His third feature film, Green Room (2015), received equal praise, putting Saulnier alongside Jeff Nichols in terms of the next great American filmmakers. (Oddly enough, Nichols also endured lengthy misfortune en...

Editors 2024 Emmy Creative Arts slugfest: Debating who and what will triumph in guest actor/actress, TV-movie, casting, game show races, more [Watch]
Image
While most of the prediction thought and energy when forecasting the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards goes to the big-ticket honors for comedy, drama and limited series, there are no fewer than 99 additional categories for which statuettes will be handed out at the Creative Arts Emmys on September 7 and 8 at the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live. And because they had already talked themselves hoarse debating the merits of the categories included in The Big Emmy Show on September 15, Gold Derby senior editors Denton Davidson, Marcus James Dixon and Daniel Montgomery and news and features editor Ray Richmond decided it was time to lock horns in a slugfest examining some of the too-often-less-discussed nominees gunning for gold in the creative arts portion of the three-day Emmy extravaganza. Watch the quartet’s lively discussion above.

‘The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat’ Ending Explained & Movie Recap: Is Odette Dead?
Image
I never expected to like The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat. But as I treat every work assignment with the same intensity, I started watching the movie with all my attention. To my surprise, the first hour passed by like a soothing breeze. It wasn’t my thing for sure, but I found myself digging the vibe of it. The plot was moving at a brisk pace, the drama was palpable, and the acting was fine enough to hold you. But then it started losing steam. By the time the final act kicked in, everything went haywire, and I couldn’t wait for it to end. It’s baffling how on earth director Tina Mabry lost the plot like that, especially after such a solid start. There’s not much to explain about The Supremes, but we’re still going to analyze Mabry’s film adaptation of the...

The Supremes At Earl’S All-you-can-eat – Review
Image
Okay all you music biopic fans, just keep reading the title past the first two words. This should give you a hint that it’s not the “rags to riches” tale of the 60s talented titanic trio from Motown. Actually, this story is set quite a distance from Detroit. way down in North Carolina. And yes, much of the flashback sequences are set in the 1960s, but the title refers to a nickname given to three childhood friends. And if you’d guess that the ploy revolves around their “ups and downs”, romances and challenges, well you’re perhaps familiar with the novel this film is based upon…or you picked up the gist of it from the poster. So, get those tissues ready to wipe away the tears inspired by The Supremes At Earl’S All-you-can-eat.

After a brief flash-forward, the film focused on three middle-aged women strolling toward the aforementioned eatery.

‘Fargo’ Star Juno Temple on Digging into Dot’s Trauma With Puppets & Jennifer Jason Leigh
Image
Juno Temple has built quite a resume for herself over the years onscreen, working with an array of buzzy costars and directors, but she’s certainly best known to most audiences as Keeley Jones, the model-turned-pr lead for A.F.C. Richmond in Apple TV+‘s Ted Lasso. So, when she returned to audiences as Dot Lyon in FX‘s acclaimed limited series Fargo, Temple was a far cry from the outspoken and colorfully-clad Keeley, opting for the dramatic portrayal as the Midwestern housewife. Dot goes through so much during Fargo‘s 2019-set fifth chapter which unfolds over ten episodes. Fearful of the past that she ran from as Nadine, Dot wishes to preserve the peace she’s found with husband Wayne (David Rysdahl) and daughter Scotty (Sienna King). But her abusive first husband Roy Tillman (an eerily scary Jon Hamm) is determined to recapture his runaway bride, feeling a debt is owed.

Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor Says Hollywood Needs More Films Like ‘The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat’: ‘There Is a Lack of Curiosity About Black Women’
Image
When the script for “The Supremes at Earl’s All-You-Can-Eat” landed on Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor’s desk, she jumped at the opportunity to star in the historical drama. Despite a three-decade-long career, it’s a rarity for Ellis-Taylor to find herself cast in projects that pass the Bechdel test. “The Supremes,” which debuted at the Martha’s Vineyard African American Film Festival (Mvaaff) on Wednesday night, is based on the best-selling novel by Edward Kelsey Moore. Directed by Tina Mabry, the film offered Ellis-Taylor and her castmates, Sanaa Lathan and Uzo Aduba, the chance to participate in something rarely seen on screen.

“There is a lack of curiosity about Black women, about the lives of Black women. A lack of interest, and a lack of care,” Ellis-Taylor says, sitting down with Variety at the festival. “[The Supremes]” is a rebellion against that.”

Set in a small southern town, the film follows lifelong friends Odette...
