Cameron Crowe will say anything in memoir planned for fall 2025
Image
As Lester Bangs said in Almost Famous, “The only true currency in this bankrupt world is what you share with someone else when you’re uncool.” And director Cameron Crowe is going to share the story of his “uncool” life with a memoir arriving later this year titled, aptly enough, The Uncool.

Simon & Schuster (via their Avid Reader Press imprint) will release Cameron Crowe’s memoir this fall, with an October 28th shelf date. As far as the era The Uncool will cover, fans and readers can expect it to lean heavily on Crowe’s time immersing himself in the music industry, where he found himself as a teen working for Rolling Stone and reporting on the likes of Bob Dylan, David Bowie, the Eagles, Led Zeppelin, and more.

As per the publisher, The Uncool “offers a front-row ticket to the 1970s, a golden era for music and art when rock was young.

The ‘Almost’ In Almost Famous: How Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep, & Natalie Portman Almost Starred The Face Of Cameron Crowe’s Classic
Image
Brad Pitt, Meryl Streep, & Natalie Portman (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Imagine Brad Pitt screaming, “I am a golden God,” as the charismatic Russell Hammond in Almost Famous. Sounds ironic, right? But believe it or not, that near-moment almost happened. In a throwback, director Cameron Crowe revealed that Pitt was initially tapped to play the lead guitarist of the fictional rock band Stillwater. Instead, Billy Crudup ultimately brought the role to life, but the casting process was much more star-studded than you might think.

In the early stages, Crowe had his sights set on Pitt. The two had an undeniable connection after an extraordinary meeting during Say Anything, and when Crowe started working on Almost Famous, Pitt was his first choice. Crowe recalled, “Brad Pitt was on my mind… he just really had something.” For months, they worked on the character, even reading with none other than Natalie Portman, who was in...

A Major Injury Forces a Professional Footballer to Question His Sense of Self in William Miller’s ‘Broke’
Image
Football is a difficult sport to represent on screen. There have, of course, been a handful of great films set around football but they are few and far between as it’s hard to truly capture the intensity of the game and its all-encompassing effect on players. That very notion is the subject of William Miller’s Oneighty Productions drama Broke, which portrays a promising young player who questions his sense of self and his relationship with his father after he suffers a major injury set back. What Miller nails in his short is how these players are sometimes surrounded by individuals who care more about their relationship with the game than with them as people. Broke is a film which highlights the difficult mental challenges that athletes face in high level sports and successfully presents it with a grounded authenticity. Dn caught up with Miller to learn how he...

What Really Happened to Almost Famous?
Image
Cameron Crowe is responsible for some of the most memorable moments in cinema these past 40 years or so. Phoebe Cates and Judge Reinhold at the pool in Fast Times at Ridgemont High. Jerry Maguire and Rod Tidwell screaming “Show Me the Money.” Lloyd Dobler blasting Peter Gabriel in Say Anything. But before he won an Oscar or became friends with Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg, Crowe lived an entirely different life as a precocious rock-and-roll journalist for Rolling Stone magazine. Barely ready for life outside of his house, the young writer abruptly found himself hanging out with rock gods and sexy groupies – he was privy to more hedonism than most of us can only dream of before he turned 18. Naturally, that sounds like fodder for a compelling movie, and while he plotted a film based on his younger years for quite a long time, Crowe didn’t get to realize it until Almost Famous,...

The Real People Who Inspired the Characters of ‘Almost Famous’
Image
Boy has a passion for writing. Boy starts writing for an underground music magazine. Boy gets noticed by a major publication. Boy meets girl. Boy travels with a touring rock band for weeks. By most accounts, this premise seems far-fetched, but for Cameron Crowe — the screenwriter, director, and former teen Rolling Stone journalist — these events are a loose retelling of his formative years as a rock journalist. Almost Famous, the brightest light of Crowe’s work, follows a Crowe-esque teen, William Miller (Patrick Fugit), as he tours with the fictional rock band Stillwater.

Embattled Indie Label Tiny Engines Revived Under “New Management Structure”
Image
Back in 2019, indie rock-focused record label Tiny Engines essentially shuttered after a number of its artists accused them of payment issues and breach of contract — which co-founder Chuck Daley admitted to. Now, co-founder Will Miller has announced that he’s reviving the label as its sole owner under a “new management structure.”

In a statement shared to Tiny Engines’ Twitter Friday, Miller wrote that he’s “committed to making sure artists and their records are being cared for properly and treated with the required respect,” as well as “ensur[ing] that artists are being paid what they are owed.”

The statement clarifies that all accounting between the label and its artists has been completed, with all artists having now been paid in full. Additionally, 80% of the label’s masters ownership contracts have now been amended to licensing contracts — with the remaining 20% scheduled for completion by the end of 2023 — meaning the label...

Almost Famous: Cameron Crowe’s Masterpiece Revisited

People nowadays have forgotten just how good Cameron Crowe was at his peak. For the writer-director, Almost Famous was his masterpiece, which told the story of a teenage rock journalist on tour with a mid-level rock band in the seventies. For many of us, it remains one of the greatest modern films and a masterpiece that, almost twenty-five years later, remains a cultural touchstone for many of us. In this episode of Revisited, we examine Crowe’s seminal film and how it holds up all these years later.

One of the reasons that Almost Famous was such an essential film for Crowe is that it’s autobiographical. Like Spielberg’s recent The Fabelmans, Crowe fictionalizes his story somewhat, but many of the formative events that occurred in his life happen here. Like his main character, William Miller, Crowe was a teenage rock journalist for Rolling Stone Magazine. Crowe had begun...

Almost Famous Is an Underrated Feminist Film
Image
2000's Almost Famous was a critically acclaimed and beloved classic on release. It remains on many "Great Films" lists, an iconic picture in many ways for its visuals and narrative twists, and one of the most well-liked '70s rock 'n' roll throwbacks. But what few reviews of the movie talk about is the film's noticeable streak of feminism. While told from a male perspective and set in the highly macho rock 'n' roll environment, Almost Famous is nonetheless a film about a feminist point of view being championed and vindicated through both the female characters and the male ones.

Almost Famous follows William Miller (Patrick Fugit), a teen rock fan who ends up joining the fictional rock band Stillwater on tour to write an article for Rolling Stone about them. He comes from a controlling but well-meaning mother, Elaine (Frances McDormand), who fears for his safety in the world of rock,...

New Girl Cast & Character Guide
Image
The New Girl cast is full of hugely talented actors bringing its quirky, lovable characters to life. The series revolves around Jess Day, a bubbly teacher who moves into a loft in Los Angeles with three wacky roommates after catching her boyfriend cheating on her. Created by Elizabeth Meriwether, New Girl ran for seven seasons and was a hit with both critics and audiences. The New Girl cast was given the freedom to improvise lines, and the spontaneity of the ad-libbed dialogue went a long way toward making the characters feel real and catching the attention of a mainstream audience.

Some characters in New Girl are grounded and relatable, like Jess and her on-and-off love interest Nick Miller, while others are zany comedic personalities, like Schmidt, the secret main character of New Girl, and Outside Dave. In every case, the producers found the perfect actor to play each part. The...

Almost Famous Soundtrack: Every Song & Where It Plays
Image
The Almost Famous soundtrack is full of great songs, both beloved rock classics and underappreciated deep cuts. Written and directed by Cameron Crowe, Almost Famous follows young writer William Miller’s escapades on the road with the fictional rock band Stillwater in the 1970s. It’s a semi-autobiographical story drawn from Crowe’s own experiences as a teenage music journalist for Rolling Stone. Since the entire narrative revolves around music, the Almost Famous soundtrack is more important than that of the average movie. It plays like a classic rock and roll playlist. Almost Famous has a few original songs attributed to Stillwater, but the majority of its soundtrack comprises licensed hits.

Almost Famous was widely praised by critics as one of the greatest movies of 2000 and has since become a beloved cult classic. Crowe won the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for his Almost Famous script, and his music...

Waco: Who Were David Koresh and the Branch Davidians?
Image
Timed to acknowledge the 30th anniversary of the fateful events, Netflix’s Waco: American Apocalypse is a three-episode docuseries exploring the so-called “Waco Siege” or “Waco Massacre” of 1993.

From Feb. 28 through April 19 of that year, agents of the state including the FBI, Atf, Texas law enforcement, and the U.S. military occupied the premises of a Waco, Texas-area property belonging to the Branch Davidians, a heavily-armed religious cult. The 51-day siege began with an exchange of gunfire that led to the death of four federal agents and six Davidians and ultimately it would end in violence as well – as a conflagration of unclear origin eventually engulfed the group’s Mount Carmel compound, killing 76 people including their leader David Koresh.

As one might expect from a story that combines the American pastimes of religious extremism, overzealous law enforcement, gunfights, and explosions, the Waco Siege looms large in the American consciousness. Over the years,...

Casey Likes will return to Broadway this summer as Marty McMcFly in Back to the Future: the Musical.

Outside of the theater world, Miller stars as Gene Simmons in the upcoming Neil Bogart biopic Spinning Gold and as the leading role in MGM’s feature Dark Harvest.

He joins the previously announced Roger Bart as Doc Brown and Hugh Coles as George McFly. Both Bart and Coles are reprising their roles from the West End production, which is scheduled to run through July 23, 2023, after opening in September 2021. The West End production won an Olivier Award for best new musical.

Kate Hudson Used 'An Amalgamation Of Different Women' To Inspire Penny Lane In Almost Famous
Image
Writer/director Cameron Crowe's semi-autobiographical 2000 film "Almost Famous" captures the magical allure of the music industry, complete with the diehard artists and fans who dedicate their lives to it. Kate Hudson stars in the movie as Penny Lane, a young blonde woman who bewitches the up-and-coming band Stillwater, along with the wide-eyed, impressionable young reporter covering their journey (Patrick Fugit's William Miller), while the band is on tour in 1973. In the film, she explains that she isn't a groupie. Lane clarifies, "Groupies sleep with rock stars because they want to be near someone famous. We are here because of the music, we inspire the music. We are band-aides."

The traditionally judgmental perspective of what a groupie entails is explored through Lane's passion for the music, freedom of living on the road, and learning to love without commitment despite still facing heartbreak. She's a complicated character with complicated beliefs,...

Kate Hudson's Glass Onion Character Is The Spiritual Successor To One Of Her Greatest Roles
Image
From the moment we meet Kate Hudson's Birdie in the opening minutes of Rian Johnson's new whodunit "Glass Onion," there is something all too familiar about her. In order to fully explain, I have to circle back to the beginning of Hudson's career, when she was simply a nepo baby who may or may not make it in Hollywood despite being the child of Goldie Hawn. She had only done a couple of films before getting cast as the whimsical groupie goddess Penny Lane in Cameron Crowe's "Almost Famous," and the part quite literally put her on the map.

The film premiered in 2000 after two years of Hudson putting her nose to the grindstone. It couldn't have paid off better. Though still relatively unknown at the time, Hudson garnered a Golden Globe for best supporting actress and even earned an Oscar nom in the same category. The...

Almost Famous Music Writer Nancy Wilson Put Billy Crudup And Jason Lee Through Rock School
Image
On his better days, Billy Crudup is Russell from Stillwater. Or at least, that's what he says in the Cameron Crowe film "Almost Famous" about a young — like really young — journalist for Rolling Stone who goes on tour with the fictional band in order to write about them for the magazine. The film, which revolves around said touring rock band, has always been about more than just the music, but at the center of Stillwater is Crudup's character Russell Hammond and Jason Lee's Jeff Bebe. Crudup plays the extremely talented lead guitarist for the band while Lee takes on the role of the lead singer.

In the movie, Russell ends up befriending 15-year-old journalist William Miller (Patrick Fugit), mentoring him, and allowing him access to the backstage life and inner workings of Stillwater and their group of roadies all while getting into constant tiffs with Jeff over which member...

‘Almost Famous’ to Close on Broadway in January
Image
Click here to read the full article.

The musical stage adaptation of Almost Famous will play its final Broadway performance on Jan. 8, the production announced Monday.

The musical, an adaptation of Cameron Crowe’s 2000 film, began previews at the Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre on Oct. 3 and opened on Nov. 3.

This is the latest Broadway show to announce its closure, following Kpop, which closed on Dec. 11, two weeks after opening, and Ain’t No Mo, which received a closing notice, but is now extended through Dec. 23 after the production and celebrities backers rallied around the show.

The closing notices come as tourism remains down in New York and as Broadway shows grapple with higher running costs and changing audience behavior. Almost Famous also received mixed to poor reviews, with The Hollywood Reporter‘s David Rooney highlighting its “infectious energy” while asking “Did it need to become a stage musical? Debatable.” Grosses have been fairly average,...

How Philip Seymour Hoffman Would 'Rib' Patrick Fugit On The Set For Almost Famous
Image
The late Philip Seymour Hoffman gave one of the most memorable performances of his career as rock critic and truth teller Lester Bangs in Cameron Crowe's "Almost Famous." An autobiographical recounting of Crowe's own experiences as a teen journalist on tour with Allman Brothers Band, Led Zeppelin, and Lynyrd Skynyrd, the film follows a wide-eyed writer named William Miller (Patrick Fugit) who finds a new home on the traveling bus of the fictional band Stillwater during the spring of 1973. Bangs never joins them on the road, but he does become the spiritual and moral compass for William, spouting out brilliant bits of wisdom over the phone to help the young scribe avoid the allure of an "industry of cool."

The real Lester Bangs was considered one of the most important voices in music criticism until his untimely death at the age of 33. His incendiary reviews for Rolling Stone and Creem magazine contained a new,...

Tristán Ulloa and Alba Baptista in Warrior Nun (2020)
Warrior Nun Canceled at Netflix
Tristán Ulloa and Alba Baptista in Warrior Nun (2020)
Netflix is parting ways with Warrior Nun.

Deadline reported Tuesday afternoon that the cult favorite has been canceled after two seasons.

The second season of the series launched on November 10, but there was a lack of promotion for the series, likely contributing to the lower-than-expected performance.

Netflix had several opportunities to promote the show, including at its Tudum Global Fan Event, but the streaming service elected to let the show slip under the radar.

As a result, Warrior Nun Season 2 spent just three weeks in the streamer's weekly Top 10 for English-language series, with #5 being the peak.

The series also showed up on the Nielsen Streaming Chart for the week of November 7, with 595 million minutes viewed, coming in ahead of The Handmaid's Tale, Andor, and The Watcher for that week.

Warrior Nun starred Alba Baptista as Ava Silva, Toya Turner as Sister Mary/Shotgun Mary, Thekla Reuten as Jillian Salvius, Lorena Andrea as Sister Lilith,...

Warrior Nun Cancelled After 2 Seasons
Image
Warrior Nun‘s fight is over. Netflix has canceled the fantasy series after just two seasons, our sister site Deadline reports.

The cancellation news comes less than a week after Warrior Nun — with the release of its second season — landed on Nielsen’s latest U.S. streaming ranking of streaming originals. With just four days of eligibility for Season 2, Warrior Nun made its chart debut at No. 4, (distantly) trailing Manifest, The Crown and Love Is Blind.

‘Warrior Nun’ Canceled By Netflix After 2 Seasons
Image
Exclusive: Netflix has opted not to order a third season of Warrior Nun. The decision was made a month after the Nov. 10 release of the fantasy drama’s second season.

Warrior Nun‘s second season ratings performance follows the pattern of other scripted series which have been canceled by Netflix as the streamer evaluates viewing vs. cost for their renewal decisions. Season 2 spent just three weeks in Netflix’s Weekly Top 10 for English-language series, peaking at #5. Warrior Nun has built a small yet passionate fan base, which helped it secure a second season renewal but was not enough to sustain the series in the long run.

Even Kate Hudson Couldn't Prepare Patrick Fugit For Almost Famous' Hotel Room Scene
Image
When Cameron Crowe was 15, he became the youngest journalist to write for Rolling Stone Magazine. Throughout his adolescence, he interviewed many iconic musicians of the '70s, including Led Zeppelin, The Who, David Bowie, and Elton John. In 1981, he adapted his book "Fast Times at Ridgemont High: A True Story" into a screenplay, and seven years later, he added Hollywood director to his resume with the release of "Say Anything."

The writer has a natural affection for "the little guy" and a seemingly never-ending ability to create unlikely heroes with universal appeal. Before he fell in love with music, Crowe told Rolling Stone he was a precocious boy who was sheltered by a mother who thought rock and roll was "s*** disguised as candy." In typical teenage fashion, he rebelled against her beliefs by secretly reading Creem, Rolling Stone, and the San Diego Door, and carved his own path in life through writing and music.

Warrior Nun Forgot Ava's Coolest Halo Power In Season 2
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Warrior Nun Season 2Ava (Alba Baptista) gained an incredible new Halo power in Warrior Nun season 2, but it never factored into how she and the Order of the Cruciform Sword defeated Adriel (William Miller). Ava had the fate of the world on her shoulders in Warrior Nun season 2, and she was up against seemingly insurmountable odds. Even with her powers, Adriel was more powerful than the Halo Bearer and couldn't be killed in our realm by any Earthly weapon. Meanwhile, Ava also had to battle Sister Lilith (Lorena Andrea), who evolved into a powerful new form and even grew wings.

Warrior Nun season 2 picks up months after season 1's cliffhanger, but thanks to her training under Sister Beatrice (Kristina Tonteri-Young), Ava gained more Halo powers, including a new miraculous ability to run on the surface of water like the Flash can. Unfortunately, Ava couldn't maintain her walking...

Almost Famous: The Musical Review: The Much-Loved Movie Deserves More Than A Dull Stage Translation
Image
There's plenty of buzz around "Almost Famous: The Musical." As a Broadway screen-to-stage adaptation of Cameron Crowe's 2000 acclaimed autobiographical "Almost Famous," the production was dripping with promises. After a 2019 premiere at the San Diego Old Globe Theatre, the musical finally moved its way to the Broadway stage. With a book based on Crowe's Oscar-winning screenplay, some light revisions (like cutting out a non-consensual kiss), and a talented cast, what could go wrong? Sadly, not a lot goes right. Adding original songs by Tom Kitt ("The Visitor"), Crowe's book remains mostly intact yet the staging struggles to translate the charm for distinctive theatre sensibilities.

Growing up with a supportive but overbearing mother (Anika Larsen) in 1973 suburban San Diego, 15-year-old William Miller (Casey Likes) obsesses over rock albums left behind by his rebellious sister (Emily Schultheis). An emerging writer, William scores paid writing assignments, including one from Rolling Stone, to profile the rock band scene.

‘Thirteen Lives’: Recreating the Extraordinary Circumstances of the Thai Cave Rescue
Image
Ron Howard’s “Thirteen Lives” is the latest example of the director’s ability to generate riveting cinema from real-world headlines. Like “Apollo 13” and “Frost/Nixon,” it takes a historical event many audience members will have some awareness of — in this case the dramatic rescue of a Thai soccer team trapped in an underwater cave — and brings it to vivid life, creating nail-biting suspense despite the outcome being common knowledge. The key to the film’s effectiveness is its rigorous attention to detail and meticulous sense of research and journalistic accuracy, qualities evident in every craft on display.

In the videos below, supervising sound editors Rachael Tate and Oliver Tarney, re-recording mixer William Miller, cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom, production designer Molly Hughes, and editor James Wilcox discuss how they preserved the authenticity of the story that inspired “Thirteen Lives” while also using all the tools of drama and cinema — including...
