Nikolai Zhukov was a pretty conflicted man. A man divided between duty, loyalty, and family. To be honest, we don’t know much about him, right? In season 2, he was introduced as an ex-Kgb agent who was keeping a watch on our hero Kleo Straub. [Spoiler Alert] As the series progressed, we got to know more and more about him. Who he was and what he was trying to accomplish.
Back in the day, Nikolai was a Soviet patriot and devoted communist who resented the ideas of the West. He wanted to protect his country and bring glory to his nation at all costs. Nikolai was married to Otto Straub’s only daughter, Brigitte. I believe anyone who has watched the two seasons of Kleo knows who Otto is and what ideals he believes in. He wanted his daughter to marry someone who would never betray his country, and perhaps Nikolai seemed like a perfect fit.

Throughout Kleo season 1, the titular character had been trying to find out why her comrades branded her as a traitor and sent her to prison for the crimes she hadn’t committed. I am sure you are already aware of Kleo’s background and the work she used to do for the German Democratic Republic (Gdr). Kleo Straub was arrested in 1987 and was released 3 years later in 1990, after the fall of the Communist Party leadership in East Berlin. However, in prison, Kleo had lost her baby, and that prompted her to seek revenge from her perpetrators, which included her own grandfather, Stasi general Otto Straub. During season 1’s ending, Kleo found out that her mysterious arrest had something to do with a “Red Suitcase,” which belonged to a man she had killed in a nightclub called Big Eden in West Berlin. The suitcase contained a legal pact between the Soviets and the Americans,...
