How do you make a satirical movie about modern America when the news that comes out of there every day is quite literally beyond a joke? Ari Aster is one of the rare directors willing to go there, and his new film Eddington is extraordinary not only for that but for depicting a slice of history that we have yet to see properly shown on film, even though it happened only five years ago. Dressed up as a neo-noir Western, this pandemic saga drips with the kind of biting, dark political humor hardly seen much since the heyday of screenwriter and novelist Terry Southern, author of Stanley Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove.
The setting — late May 2020 — is crucial: Covid-19 has just become a thing, and the residents of Eddington in Sevilla County are getting used to life with masks and social distancing. Most comply, but others are skeptical, including Sheriff Joe Cross (Joaquin Phoenix), who,...

Jimmy Kimmel isn’t letting Elon Musk off the hook. The same goes for the conservatives who are apparently outraged at Kimmel for continuing to joke about Tesla owners destroying their cars in protest of Musk.
The Tesla owner tried to blame the vandalism on “some kind of mental illness,” but Kimmel noted that people are just mad at Musk for seemingly giving the Nazi salute twice at an inauguration event for Donald Trump. The late-night host also reminded Musk that he waved around a chainsaw earlier this year to celebrate the Department of Government Efficiency cutting government spending, which has resulted in thousands of job cuts from the federal workforce. So yeah, people just don’t like Musk and are taking it out on their Teslas in protest.
“Tesla is not having a good week,” Kimmel said in his latest monologue on March 20. “Today they issued a recall of nearly all 46,000 of their Cybertrucks.

Elon Musk called Jimmy Kimmel “such an unfunny jerk” on X after the comedian poked fun at Tesla’s recent misfortune Wednesday night on Jimmy Kimmel Live!
“Tesla stock is way down, almost disastrously so,” Kimmel said Wednesday to cheers from the live audience. “People have been vandalizing Tesla vehicles, new Tesla vehicles. Please, don’t vandalize, don’t ever vandalize Tesla vehicles.”
Kimmel delivered that last bit with a hint of sarcasm in his voice, which raised the ire of Musk and conservative pundits today.
So tonight, Kimmel went back at Musk, Tesla and the billionaire’s conservative supporters.
“Tesla is not having a good week,” Kimmel said in his monologue. “Today they issued a recall of nearly all 46,000 of their Cybertrucks. That’s the eighth Cybertruck recall since they came out in November of 2023. It’s 15 months — 8 recalls.
“I mentioned last night multiple Teslas were burned at a Tesla facility in Las Vegas.

Sometimes people just need something to gossip about. You know, the kind of stuff that’ll grab attention, stir the pot, and make waves. And let us tell you, Candace Owens’ recent rant is just the latest piece of the gossip mill that’s buzzing on full throttle.
Let’s be honest, folks, we’ve all heard some outlandish rumors in our time, but the latest one to come from far-right commentator Candace Owens has surely hit the ‘top of the charts’. She has been no stranger to controversial views and recently suggested that France’s First Lady, Brigitte Macron, could be hiding a big secret.

Hardcore band Evergreen Terrace dropped out of heavy metal music festival Shell Shock II in Orlando, Florida, to protest the festival’s promotion of Kyle Rittenhouse.
Rittenhouse became nationally recognized in 2020 at the age of 17 when he killed two men and injured a third at a racial demonstration in Kenosha, Wisconsin. He was charged with homicide, attempted homicide and reckless endangering safety but testified that he acted in self-defense and was acquitted of all charges in November 2021.
Shell Shock’s organizers describe it as a concert charity event that raises funds for a charity that supports “first responders struggling with injuries, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.” According to reports, Shell Shock booked Rittenhouse to make a special “guest” appearance on October 19.

The Shell Shock metal festival, set to be held October 19th in Orlando, Florida, has seen headliner Evergreen Terrace and other bands drop off the bill after inviting Kyle Rittenhouse to take part in the festivities.

Days ago, Kyle Rittenhouse — admired by Donald Trump and lionized by the far right for shooting three people at a Black Lives Matter protest in Kenosha, Wisconsin, in 2020, killing two — was in lockstep with the Maga movement that supported him through the trial that saw him acquitted of homicide. On X (formerly Twitter), the 21-year-old was echoing the conspiracy theory that the attempted assassination of Trump last month was an “inside job” and calling Vice President Kamala Harris a “Dei hire.”

While filling in for the host on Jimmy Kimmel Live! this week, comic actor Anthony Anderson noted that the shooting at a Pennsylvania political rally over the weekend that saw a bullet graze former President Donald Trump’s ear is no laughing matter. But, he pointed out, some of the merchandise seen online in many instances is truly hilarious.
“Everybody’s still shaken up by the tragic events at the Trump rally on Saturday,” Anderson said as he opened his guest host monologue. “You know, all weekend, I kept thinking, I wonder what Jimmy Kimmel is going to say about this on Monday. And then I was like, ‘Oh, I am Jimmy Kimmel on Monday!'”

Kyle Rittenhouse, the 21-year-old gun rights activist who was acquitted for fatally shooting two people and injuring another at racial justice protests in 2020, faced intense backlash when he gave a speech at the University of Memphis on Wednesday.
Rittenhouse’s appearance at a campus event organized by the university’s chapter of Turning Point USA, a conservative student organization, ignited widespread student protests. Despite the outcry, the university stated that it was legally obligated to allow Rittenhouse to speak due to the First Amendment and Tennessee’s Campus Free Speech Act.
At the event, Rittenhouse discussed the importance of the Second Amendment and criticized the Black Lives Matter movement. Students expressed their opposition to his presence and highlighted concerns about gun violence in the community and his promotion of what they perceived as racist views. Videos shared online captured students booing, walking out, challenging Rittenhouse’s statements and questioning information...

The man who is being charged with the subway choking that caused homeless man Jordan Neely’s death is publicly raising money for his legal defense.
Daniel Penny, a Marine veteran, has already brought in over $2.9 million to fund his defense for the charges of criminally negligent homicide and second-degree manslaughter he is facing.
Penny is due to appear in court on October 25 and has already pleaded not guilty to all of the charges.
Andrew Stengel, a New York City defense lawyer, stated that the money that Penny does not use for his legal case, will go toward “a mental health advocacy program in New York City,” which is specified on his fundraising page.

Tom Cruise has admitted he felt ‘nervous’ as a young actor when he first met Paul Newman.
The Mission: Impossible and Top Gun: Maverick star had auditioned for Newman’s film Harry & Son (1984). The role in question was that of Harry’s (Newman) son, Howard Keach – but Cruise ultimately missed out.
Despite Newman being “interested” in Cruise’s “point of view”, the role eventually went to Robby Benson.
Cruise said: “I auditioned for Harry & Son mostly because I wanted to meet Paul. I was nervous. Starting out as a young actor, you want people to like you, you want people to like your work, you want to be accepted.”
He added: “Taps had come out and I think Risky Business. I walked into the office. There’s Joanne [Woodward] knitting, and Newman with a chain around his neck with a beer can opener on it. He was wearing an off-white sweater and jeans.

Last year, DaBaby – real name Jonathan Lyndale Kirk – became the subject of controversy after he made a series of homophobic comments during his set at the Rolling Loud festival in Miami.
He told the audience: “If you didn’t show up today with HIV, AIDS, any of them deadly sexually transmitted diseases that’ll make you die in two,...

Conservative commentator Nick Adams has made the shocking suggestion that parents should raise their children to be more like Kenosha shooter Kyle Rittenhouse than Taylor Swift.
After Swift announced her latest album Midnights at the MTV VMAs on Sunday (28 August) night, Adams used the opportunity to turn the news into a political debate.
“Kid Rock should release a new album the same day as Taylor Swift,” Adams tweeted Monday (29 August). Kid Rock, like Adams, is an ardent Donald Trump supporter.
He continued: “People are craving real music with thought-provoking and emotional lyrics. Who better to give it to them than Kid Rock?”
“I Guarantee his album would outsell and outclass hers!”
After finding out he was trending on Twitter, Adams doubled down on his comments with a video. “Kid Rock is a bad-ass American alpha male patriot,” Adams, who is Australian, said in the clip.
He then followed up with another tweet,...

Tonia Haddix is nearly in tears.
It’s been only a few days since officials showed up to the exotic-animal broker’s Missouri home on June 2, after PETA received a tip that Tonka, a Hollywood movie-star chimp in his thirties that Haddix claimed had died in May 2021, was, in fact, alive.

When Kary Antholis in 2019 stepped down as President, HBO Miniseries and Cinemax Programming, to launch Crime Story Media, his exit package included him staying on as executive producer on projects he had developed at the network that tackle crime and criminal justice. That included David Simon and George Pelecanos’ limited series We Own This City, which premiered April 25, and Dennis Lehane’s Black Bird, which ended up moving to Apple TV+. Headlined by Taron Egerton and Paul Walter Hauser and featuring Ray Liotta in his final TV role, the series premieres July 8.
Crime Story, dedicated to content that explores the criminal legal process, quickly made its mark in the podcast arena with The Crime Story Podcast, hosted by Antholis, which has produced 370 episodes so far; Firebug; as well as Jury Duty distributed by Acast, which has amassed 3.2 million downloads to date with its three seasons focused on the Robert Durst trial,...

In the wake of mass shootings in Buffalo and Texas, many people are crying out for someone to “do something.” Yet some of the loudest voices in that chorus are among the biggest hypocrites when it comes to creating an atmosphere that promulgates violence among the feeble minded.
Bill Maher gave Hollywood a shot across the bow in his Friday Real Time on HBO, calling on the entertainment industry to look at its own culture of violence as a stimulant that creates justification for violent actions in some minds.
Maher noted how the average American kid sees an estimated 200,000 acts of violence before age 18. “Hollywood is the wokest place on earth,” Maher said, pointing out the good done under those principles. “But when it comes to romanticizing gun violence, crickets.”

Kyle Rittenhouse is cheering the Depp-Heard verdict on Twitter, saying it’s motivating him to move forward with the various defamation lawsuits he’s been threatening — and fundraising off of — for months.
On Friday, he confirmed he’s hired Todd McMurtry, the lawyer already representing Nicholas Sandmann in several defamation cases against major media outlets related to coverage of the Kentucky teen’s 2019 encounter with a Native American protester in Washington.
“Johnny Depp trial is just fueling me, you can fight back against the lies in the media, and you should!

If you were expecting to hear a lot about Will Smith’s slap of Chris Rock at the Oscars on March 27, tonight’s Saturday Night Live cold open didn’t have a lot to offer.
Sure, James Austin Johnson ‘s Donald Trump showed up towards the end to declare that “I saw slap, I enjoyed slap, I was very impressed with my Hitch.” Swirling around a few references to past flicks by the King Richard star, Johnson’s Trump went on to say “quite an arm on Hitch, I always knew Hitch had an arm.”
“Back in Pursuit of Happyness, he’s slugging the machine on and off the subway,” this season’s Trump rambled. “I thought it was great. You know, they slept in the bathroom in that movie. It’s so sad. it’s a sad night for Hitch too.”

Dan Abrams’ true-crime channel Law & Crime has struck a carriage deal with Dish Network, Variety has learned exclusively.
Live trial and 24/7 true-crime network Law & Crime, which recently aired national coverage of the Kyle Rittenhouse trial and the trial of Brett Hankison, a former police officer charged for his role at the fatal shooting of Breonna Taylor, has now launched on Dish and is available to customers on Channel 252. The new distribution pact between Law & Crime and Dish increases the channel’s reach to more than 27 million households across the U.S., the Bahamas and Virgin Islands.
“We’ve had a deal with Sling for a number of years now and have always been aspiring to also be included in Dish,” Law & Crime founder, ABC News chief legal affairs anchor and NewsNation host Abrams told Variety. “And so this has been a number-of-years effort to add Dish to our roster of partners.

“Law & Order: Organized Crime” star Chris Meloni put Ricky Schroder’s latest attempt at anti-vax activism in check Monday, calling out the former “NYPD Blue” and “Silver Spoons” star a day after he arrived in Washington, D.C. as part of the so-called “Freedom Convoy” protests.
Schroder posted a video online Sunday, in which he stated: “Our bodies are our own; we own this. We get to decide what goes in and what goes out. Understood?”

Kyle Rittenhouse’s status as the new rockstar of the conservative movement was cemented on Monday, when he strode onstage at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest in front of fireworks, flashing lights, a DJ scratching over his name, and, most importantly, thunderous applause from the young people in attendance.

This month’s inaugural AmericaFest 2021, a multi-day conference presented by Turning Point USA, has a predictably heavy-duty lineup of controversial speakers and politicians ready to gin up conservative outrage: Tucker Carlson, Candace Owens, and Marjorie Taylor Greene are among the usual suspects. The documentary “Attica” about the 1971 prison riot is all too timely as America continues to grapple with inequities in its criminal justice system. It debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, followed by an October 29 theatrical release and a November 6 premiere on Showtime.
The film chronicles the events that transpired exactly 50 years ago. On September 9 of that year, more than 1,200 inmates took control of the facility, leaving dozens dead but bringing public attention to the abuses rampant in America’s prison system. Critics have described it as “devastating” and “harrowing,” an “essential film that can now stand as a definitive vision of that epochal event.”

Right-wing darling Kyle Rittenhouse, the teen acquitted of murder for killing two people at a racial justice protest, sent the QAnon world into a tailspin when he said in interviews that Lin Wood, a leading QAnon believer and Trump attorney who briefly represented Rittenhouse, was “insane” and had “taken advantage” of him.
That prompted right-wing Trump allies — including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, alt-right activist Jack Posobiec and former Trump White House aide Sebastian Gorka — to come out against Wood. In response, Wood has been posting through it, making wild claims without evidence.

A jury on Wednesday found three men guilty of the murder of Ahmaud Arbery, who’d been shot at close range while running through a residential neighborhood in Georgia. Father and son Greg McMichael and Travis McMichael, along with their neighbor, William “Roddie” Bryan had each been charged with aggravated assault, false imprisonment, malice murder, felony murder, and other charges. Travis McMichael was the only defendant to be convicted of malice murder.
Jurors deliberated for around 10 hours over two days after closing arguments concluded with the prosecution’s final rebuttal Tuesday morning.

Rittenhouse, who was acquitted after he shot three people, killing two of them, at a racial justice protest in Kenosha, Wis., spoke with Carlson in an interview that aired Monday night. The teen said that Wood and attorney John Pierce, who later left his case before it went to trial, “disrespected my wishes” by keeping him in jail and not bailing him out sooner.

The GoFundMe website has announced its ban on fundraisers for Kyle Rittenhouse has been lifted following his acquittal on Friday.
The site previously banned Rittenhouse legal defense fundraisers because he was accused of a violent crime. His exoneration in his trial on Friday cleared that hurdle.
“If someone is acquitted of those charges, as Rittenhouse was today, a fundraiser started subsequently for their legal defense and other expenses would not violate this policy,” the statement read. “A fundraiser to pay lawyers, cover legal expenses or to help with ongoing living expenses for a person acquitted of those charges could remain active as long as we determine it is not in violation of any of our other terms and, for example, the purpose is clearly stated and the correct beneficiary is added to the fundraiser.”
However, reports indicate GoFundMe has waivered on a blanket ban in such cases.
