Oklahoma City Bombing Netflix Documentary Trailer & Release Date
Image
In Oklahoma City Bombing: American Terror, filmmaker Greg Tillman delves into the harrowing events of April 19, 1995, when a bomb devastated the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City. The documentary, premiering April 18, offers a moment-by-moment account of the chaos, shock, and acts of courage that unfolded in the wake of the deadly attack.

The film features crime scene recreations, firsthand accounts from survivors, first responders, and law enforcement, and audio-recorded interviews with domestic terrorist Timothy McVeigh, the man responsible for the bombing — all shedding new light on the tragedy that claimed 168 lives. Probing how the FBI collaborated with local authorities, the documentary takes a detailed look into the investigative methods — and strokes of pure luck — used to bring McVeigh and his co-conspirators to justice, while also exploring the personal demons driving McVeigh’s radical, far-right, insurrectionist agenda.

‘American Manhunt: O.J. Simpson’ Docuseries Drops a Trailer
Image
Netflix rehashes the O.J. Simpson trial in American Manhunt: O.J. Simpson, a four-part documentary series. The trailer doesn’t reveal anything we haven’t seen before about the murder case, but the description teases that individuals involved in the case sat down for new interviews.

American Manhunt: The Boston Marathon Bombing‘s Floyd Russ directs and executive produces. Additional executive producers include William Green, Aaron Ginsburg, Kerstin Emhoff, Ali Brown, and Tiller Russell.

“This four-episode docuseries takes an in-depth look at the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman and the trial that dominated the news cycle in the mid-1990s, from the chase on LA freeways to the riveting court proceedings. Featuring new and candid interviews with key individuals — including Goldman’s sister Kim, O.J. Simpson prosecutor Christopher Darden, L.A. police detective Mark Fuhrman, O.J.

5 Netflix Documentaries You Must Watch If You Liked “This Is the Zodiac Speaking”
Image
Netflix’s This Is the Zodiac Speaking spills some shocking facts about the case that continues to haunt America. The Zodiac killer was an unidentified serial killer who operated in Northern California in the ’60s. The killer mailed taunting messages to regional newspapers, with his last letter claiming that he had killed 37 victims. The new documentary focuses on the only suspect that authorities named publicly, Arthur Leigh Allen.

According to the documentary, people who knew Allen claimed that he had told them that he was the Zodiac killer. These people also revealed that Allen drugged them as children and may have even brought them along to his crimes. The documentary included interviews with David and Connie Seawater and several other former pupils who knew Allen.

Robert Graysmith, the journalist who wrote the book about the serial killer and was...

'American Manhunt: The Boston Marathon Bombing' Offers Few Revelations
Image
Hindsight coverage of an event that was as widely covered (and still relatively recent) as the Boston Marathon Bombing is most successful when it provides fresh revelations or offers some sense of closure. Netflix’s American Manhunt: The Boston Marathon Bombing — created by director Floyd Russ (Malice at the Palace) and executive producer Tiller Russell — features a profound lack of both. The three-part docuseries falls just short of making any larger commentary about police interference, Islamophobia, or the impact of the event on the victims a decade later. Instead, it acts as a play-by-play, as those interviewed desperately search for somewhere to place blame without looking at the bigger picture.

Netflix Exposes the Pedophile Cult Leader Who Went to War With the FBI
Image
Nobody came out of the 1993 Waco tragedy looking good. Not David Koresh, the messianic religious/cult leader who stockpiled illegal weapons and married underage girls in order to spread his seed for a coming apocalypse. Not the Atf, which went ahead with its raid on Koresh’s Branch Davidian compound despite knowing that they were expected, eliminating any element of surprise. And not the FBI, whose hostage rescue and negotiation teams were constantly at odds over both means and ends. In the end, 86 people – 82 Davidians and four Atf agents – were killed.

“Waco: American Apocalypse”. Docuseries on Netflix about the Waco Siege
Image
Waco: American Apocalypse is a true crime documentary about the events that took place in 1993, in which a group of clergy clashed with federal agents in Waco, Texas. It is directed by Tiller Russell.

About the Documentary

A documentary about the Davidians and tragically infamous Waco siege, an event that generated a whole debate around religious freedom and the right (or not) to bear arms.

In 1993, the FBI seized the Waco headquarters of the Branch Davidian, led by David Koresh. A faith was practiced there and its religious followers – considered a sect – had a whole arsenal of weapons that they did not hesitate to use against government forces.

What happened? In Waco: American Apocalypse, the whole drama is recounted to us in detail, interviewing the protagonists and telling us the story of this famous sect.

In addition, it contains unpublished images of the assault and is narrated in an evidently entertaining way,...

‘Waco: American Apocalypse’ Reflects on Texas Tragedy 30 Years Later
Image
You can’t look away from Waco: American Apocalypse, an immersive three-part revisiting of the tragedy that took place outside Waco, Texas, in 1993. After a 51-day siege at the compound of the cultlike Branch Davidian religious group, 82 congregants, including 25 children, perished in flames, seemingly at the behest of their leader, David Koresh. (Credit: Courtesy of Netflix) A warrant had been issued for Koresh, whose group had been stockpiling illegal weapons. Word came of his hold on fellow Davidians, of his having sex with women and girls. An attempt to seize him led to four agents being killed in a shoot-out. Asked if he put his trust in the Lord, Koresh answered, “I am the Lord.” But this astonishing series also points to bungling by FBI agents in charge that turned a powder-keg situation into something explosive. One agent was “brutally honest about the [bureau’s] failings” in interviews, recalls director Tiller Russell.

‘Waco: American Apocalypse’ Trailer: Netflix Documentary Revisits Cult Shootout
Image
The official trailer for “Waco: American Apocalypse,” a new documentary series about one of the bloodiest shootouts in American history, was released by Netflix on Wednesday.

The three-part docuseries tells the story of David Koresh, a cult leader who took control of the Branch Davidians religious sect in the late ’80s, claiming to be its final prophet. Allegations about polygamy and child sexual abuse on Koresh’s part surfaced in the years that followed, prompting the federal government to raid Koresh’s Mount Carmel Center compound near Waco, Texas on February 28, 1993, in a bloody siege that lasted for 51 days. The standoff was breathlessly captured on live television and ended in the deaths of 86 people — 4 FBI agents and 82 members of the cult including Koresh — and the destruction of the compound in a fire.

Released to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the siege, “American Apocalypse” is described by Netflix as “immersive” and featuring “cutting-edge visual technology.

Maika Monroe in Le voyeur (2022)
‘Watcher’ Film Review: Maika Monroe Stares Down a Potential Killer in an Intense But Low-Key Thriller
Maika Monroe in Le voyeur (2022)
Shortly after Chloe Okuno’s “Watcher” begins, Julia (Maika Monroe) asks her husband to wake her before he goes to work the next morning. But when she gets up the day is half gone, and all he did was send Julia a text with a creepy picture of her sleeping, insisting that she was just too danged pretty to listen to her.

Needless to say, this is not a man who’s going to believe his wife when she says she’s being stalked by a serial killer.

“Watcher” is a harsh and lonely thriller about a woman who moves to Romania to be with her husband, Francis when he gets a new job. Unlike Francis, she doesn’t speak the language. She’s trying to learn, but for now she’s dependent on locals who happen to understand English or her husband’s translations, which she assumes are accurate and flattering.

‘Night Stalker’ Director Tiller Russell on the Explosion of True-Crime Docs During Pandemic
Richard Ramirez in Richard Ramirez: The Night Stalker (2011)
This story about “Night Stalker” first appeared in the Race Begins issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.

Making a documentary about sadistic serial killer Richard Ramirez, also known as the Night Stalker, was no easy feat for filmmaker Tiller Russell. The director/producer knew he would have to respect the victims’ trauma while showcasing Ramirez’s crimes, which were extremely violent in nature. By anchoring the story in the perspective of Gil Carrillo, one of the detectives who helped solve the case, he was able to carefully craft the Netflix docuseries, “Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer,” set to the tone of Hollywood noir.

“Had I not met Gil or Frank, I would’ve never done the story,” Russell said. “It was their experience of it that anchored me to it. Frank and Gil were this odd couple of detectives who had this journey which you can tell...

Taking a fanboy stance on Silk Road founder Ross Ulbricht doesn’t help Tiller Russell’s underpowered Silicon Valley crime drama

Here’s an unthrilling, bland drama about the rise and fall of Ross Ulbricht, the mastermind behind the illegal online drug emporium Silk Road (described by the FBI as “the Amazon of drug sites”). Between 2011 and 2013, PhD dropout Ulbricht made millions of dollars in commissions from users on the dark web anonymously buying and selling drugs. Then he got busted.

If you consider how gripping David Fincher made a bunch of geeks in hoodies talking about algorithms look in The Social Network, the Ulbricht story – involving an FBI manhunt and allegations of murder-for-hire – should be a doddle. But watching Silk Road is a bit like rolling a joint only to find the leafy green substance you’ve been sold is oregano. The highs just don’t come.

Nick Robinson on Dark-Web Drama ‘Silk Road’ and the Future of ‘Love, Victor’
Image
Nick Robinson, the wholesome, all-American-seeming star of “Love, Simon” and “Jurassic World,” plays an unlikely drug trafficker in “Silk Road.”

The film tells the true story of Ross Ulbricht’s unlikely rise to fortune and infamy as the founder a dark web market. Dubbed the Silk Road, Ulbricht’s creation gave users the ability to buy everything from illegal narcotics to firearms and triggered an international manhunt that eventually led to his arrest and 2015 conviction. Robinson was drawn to playing Ulbricht because he wanted to explore how this libertarian true believer lost his moral compass. “Silk Road,” which is is directed by Tiller Russell and co-stars Jason Clarke, is currently available on-demand. Robinson spoke to Variety about how he prepared to play Robinson, what he thinks of his ideology, as well as what’s next for “Love, Victor,” the Hulu spinoff of “Love, Simon” that he guest starred on and produced.

As the weeks go by and the pandemic begins to lift at a very, very glacial pace we are hearing some more coins drop into the bank of the specialty box office space.

Edward Hall’s adaptation of Noel Coward’s play Blithe Spirit is one of a handful of films that made its way to theaters and digital this weekend. The IFC Films pic starring Dan Stevens, Isla Fisher, Leslie Mann and Judi Dench had a noteworthy opening in 239 theaters across the U.S., grossing an estimated $98,100. The film also managed to hit Apple Movies’ indie movie chart. It also broke the top five in the comedies section top 10 overall. Not too shabby.

Silk Road Director Talks Writing, Editing & Casting [Interview]
Writer, director, and producer Tiller Russell has a thing for criminals. Over the year's he has produced and directed a variety of features, documentaries, and TV series about everything from inmates on a sports team to The Night Stalker.

Russell's latest film Silk Road is a hybrid; on the one hand a well-researched documentary about Ross Ulbricht, the founder, and creator of the infamous Silk Road, the first darknet marketplace that was a hub for selling illegal drugs. Not to mention that it made Ulbricht rich and on the other, a fictionalized police account of how he was taken down.

The majority of the movie's first half focuses on Ross (Nick Robinson) and the why and how he developed the site while the second half focuses on detective Rick Bowden (Jason Clarke), a trou...

Silk Road Review: Dark Web Mastermind Gets a Choppy Biopic
Image
Silk Road tells the true story of Ross Ulbricht; the infamous dark web mastermind better known as his online moniker, "Dread Pirate Roberts". A brash egomaniac with an ultra-libertarian, anti-government philosophy, Ulbricht created the "Silk Road", an untraceable Amazon-esque marketplace for narcotics and illegal goods on the internet. The film charts his meteoric rise and fall, in tandem with the unhinged DEA agent who initially found him. Silk Road has a choppy, Wikipedia styled narrative that explores the radical extremes of both men. It could have used a more cinematic flow, but is certainly interesting to see.

We first meet Ross Ulbricht (Nick Robinson) at a bar in San Francisco circa 2011. He rails to his best friend (Daniel David Stewart) against the government for restricting personal freedoms. His diatribe catches the attention of the fetching Julia (Alexandra Shipp). She's impressed by his brash demeanor and ideology. Ulbricht wants to change the world.

‘Silk Road’ Review: Intriguing but Undercooked Drama About the Dark-Web Drug Site
Image
When a dramatic feature film gets made out of an investigative magazine article, there’s usually some conventional heroic hook to it. But not always. “Silk Road,” written and directed by Tiller Russell, is

During the two years of its existence, Silk Road was an underground Amazon or eBay of drugs — a platform where dealers and buyers could find each other, which meant that you could order a nicely priced, vacuum-sealed package of cannabis or Ecstasy or pharmaceutical-grade cocaine and have it delivered to your door through the U.S. Postal Service. The person who dreamed this all up, and ran the site under the cult-like pseudonym of the Dread Pirate Roberts, was Ross Ulbricht, a 26-year-old libertarian gadfly from Austin, Tex., who convinced himself that by creating an underground marketplace for illegal narcotics, he was striking a blow against the system.

Ulbricht was the subject of David Kushner’s...

Review: Silk Road Brings to Screen a Look at the Beginning and the End of the First Modern Darknet Market
Image
A narration opens Tiller Russell’s Silk Road. A young man in a hoody, shades, and flip-flops walks San Francisco’s streets and discusses the barriers between the world as it is and the world that he wants. The world he wants is one of total autonomy and freedom from government control. “Every action we take outside government control strengthens the market and weakens the state,” he says. As a result, and as a way to “take back our liberty,” he creates Silk Road, a website where anyone can buy and sell anything anonymously. The film follows a naive, bright-eyed libertarian and the creation of the biggest online marketplace of illegal goods, the notorious criminal named Dread Pirate Roberts he becomes, and the subsequent investigation by law enforcement that follows. As David Kushner writes in the Rolling Stone article the film is based on, Silk Road “made Ross Ulbricht one...

Silk Road Review: Ross Ulbricht Drama Becomes a Tired Boomer vs. Millennial Diatribe
Ross Ulbricht (Nick Robinson) wanted to change the world. And he did. Whether you believe it was for the better (bringing the Dark Web and Tor into the mainstream via his anonymous marketplace Silk Road) or worse, the infrastructure he utilized coupled with the advantages afforded by Bitcoin ignited a firestorm of possibilities. Because at the center of it all was a desire to adhere to a Libertarian set of philosophies that shook the system and evaded the state. That the story has subsequently been reduced to “drugs-by-mail” is thus as much an in-road towards entertaining drama as a smokescreen away from governmental overreach.

It’s the latter that interested director Alex Winter enough to focus his documentary Deep Web on the whole issue rather than merely Ulbricht himself. The young man who went by “Dread Pirate Roberts” on his website was still a centerpiece being that he provided a...

When Gil Carrillo joined the homicide division at the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department in the early Eighties, his future partner Frank Salerno was already something of a celebrity. ‘Night Stalker’ Review: Lurid Production Values Undercut Solid Reporting in Netflix Docuseries
Image
I was nine years old in the summer of 1985, and it was scorchingly hot in San Diego — the kind of oppressive dry heat where you don’t sweat because it evaporates instantly. I sat very, very still with my parents in suffocating heat around the dining table at our neighbor’s house. All the doors and windows were open — air conditioning was a rarity then in San Diego — and my parents kept interrupting the meal to look out the window or to stand in the doorway. My father loomed, staring outside, my mother angling her head around him to also take a quick glance into the night.

My father wasn’t looking to cool off. It was because the former college basketball player — who is over six-and-a-half feet tall and more than 250 pounds — was worried about the Night Stalker. All the lights were on in our house, and the blinds...

‘Night Stalker’ Is Just Another Gory True-Crime Misfire: TV Review
Image
Richard Ramirez’s spree of terror through the Los Angeles and San Francisco Bay Areas in 1984 and 1985 made for a psyche-shredding media fixation: The so-called “Night Stalker’s” rapaciousness — targeting people seemingly at random and with an appetite for violence that set him apart even among the history of psychopaths — provided insatiable fodder for television reports, a side effect that both burnished Ramirez’s legend and increased the effects of his reign of terror. Over and above his grievous crimes, Ramirez was creating an atmosphere of fear and mistrust that overlay an unhappy period for California.

This, at least, is the case made by “Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer,” a four-episode documentary series on Netflix. As an analysis of social madness, “Night Stalker,” directed by Tiller Russell, makes some interesting points; those, though, tend to be studded within a project that gives itself away to mania more frequently.

Netflix ‘Night Stalker’ Docuseries Director: ‘I Didn’t Want to Glamorize Him’
Image
More than three decades after he was apprehended in Los Angeles, Richard Ramirez continues to haunt our nightmares. Better known as the Night Stalker, Ramirez cut a deadly swath through the “city of angels,” killing 13 people, while sexually assaulting, burglarizing and attempting to murder many more. His cruelty and malevolence were nearly unprecedented in criminal history.

A gripping new Netflix docuseries “The Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer” chronicles the desperate search to find Ramirez by focusing on the police officers tasked with bringing the killer to justice. The unlikely pair who had to sift through the clues were Gil Carrillo, a young and outgoing detective, and his taciturn mentor, the legendary investigator Frank Salerno.

Tiller Russell, the director of the four-part series, says getting them to open up about cracking the case, as well as convincing the survivors and victims’ families that the show would honor the memories of their loved ones,...

Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer Review – Richard Ramirez Docuseries Speaks Plainly
Image
Netflix dives into one of the most horrifying cases of multiple murders with its eyes wide open in Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer. The documentary is told from the perspective of the investigators at the heart of the case, particularly a veteran homicide detective and his young, enthusiastic partner. They had nothing going into the case, and when they did dig out the clues, they often lost what they had because of its newsworthiness. The series works because it treats the audience the same way as the cops were treated: infuriatingly.

Every clue, setback, and recalculation in Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer is satisfyingly frustrating. We all know the story by now, so director Tiller Russell can leisurely fill in the plot. We don’t even get the name of the serial killer until the end of the third episode. It’s not in the title,...

Netflix Releases Trailer for Richard Ramirez Doc ‘Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer’
Image
Netflix has dropped a new trailer for its upcoming documentary on the notorious serial killer, Richard Ramirez, Night Stalker: The Hunt for a Serial Killer, set to premiere on January 13th.

Ramirez earned the nickname the “Night Stalker” when, during the summer of 1985, he terrorized Los Angeles with a string of murders and sexual assaults. As the trailer highlights, Ramirez appeared to pick his victims indiscriminately — a mix of men, women, and children, who ranged in age from six to 82 and came from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds — which made...

Image
Amazon's four-part docuseries The Last Narc is now available on the streaming service, for which director Tiller Russell took great risks in telling the story of the most notorious murder in the history of the DEA — the 1985 kidnapping and murder of DEA Agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena. The Last Narc follows Hector Berrellez, a highly decorated special agent who was assigned to lead the DEA’s investigation of Camarena’s murder. With the help of several corrupt cops who once served as bodyguards to Mexico's legendary drug lords, Hector digs deep to uncover the frightening truth about …...

“Documentaries Need Stars Just Like Feature Films Do”: Tiller Russell on his Amazon Docuseries The Last Narc
Image
To say that documentarian Tiller Russell has a knack for discovering unconventional characters is an understatement. From NYPD cops running a cocaine ring (2015’s The Seven Five), to a Russian mobster, a Cuban spy and a Miami playboy conspiring to sell a Soviet sub to the Cali cartel (2018’s Operation Odessa), the filmmaker has more than earned his gonzo doc bona fides. And the weird winning streak continues with the director’s four-part docuseries The Last Narc, premiering on Amazon Prime Video today. The story catalyzing Russell’s latest is one familiar to any viewer of the first season of Netflix’s Narcos: Mexico — the 1985 kidnapping […]...

‘The Last Narc’ Trailer Promises New Insights on Infamous Murder of DEA Agent
The Last Narc (2020)
Amazon Prime Video is gearing up to release the four-part docuseries “The Last Narc,” and the streaming service’s trailer promises new insights about the kidnapping and murder of DEA agent Enrique “Kiki” Camarena.

Per Amazon, “The Last Narc” tells the story of a fallen hero, the men who killed him in 1985, and the one man who risked everything to find out what really happened and why. Highly decorated special agent Hector Berellez, who was assigned to lead the DEA’s investigation of Camarena’s murder, peels back the layers of myth and propaganda to reveal the bone-chilling truth about a conspiracy that stretches from the killing fields of Mexico to the halls of power in Washington, D.C.

Berellez’s powerful testimony appears alongside that of Camarena’s brave widow,...
