Disney is making a significant update to one of its theme-park rides after continuous calls to action against racist depictions in Disney attractions and movies. One of Disney World's most popular rides at Magic Kingdom, Peter Pan's Flight, a staple of the amusement park, recently returned from refurbishment with a noteworthy alteration. While the original incarnation of the ride at Disneyland didn't feature Peter Pan or the Native Americans, they were added to the Magic Kingdom version in 1971. That version has resided in Fantasyland ever since until now.
According to Deadline, the Disney World version of the ride has already made the necessary changes to remove the outdated stereotypes. The ride's new facelift features updated versions of Native Americans in a more authentic setting. The Chief in a headdress has been entirely removed, and the classic character, Tiger Lily, is now depicted more gently, celebrating with her grandmother and other...

A scene in one of Disneyland’s original rides is getting a modern makeover.
Peter Pan’s Flight has been a staple at Disneyland since opening day in 1955, and is one of Walt Disney’s few original attractions that remains operational.
One portion of the ride is getting a makeover, however. The so-called “Never Land Tribe scene,” which has for decades featured a chief in a headdress alongside drumming braves and a seated Tiger Lily, will now feature more benign-looking drummers and a more active Tiger Lily dancing alongside her grandmother. The chief is gone entirely.
The changes were already introduced at Walt Disney World last week, with visitors taking notice and posting photos. See below for before-and-after shots shared to social media.

Chris Cross, best known as the bassist in the English new wave band Ultravox, has died at 71 years old.
According to reports, Cross (born Chris Allen) died on March 25th, but the news was not made public until longtime bandmate Midge Ure shared a statement on Ultravox’s Instagram paying tribute to “the glue that held the band together.” No cause of death has been revealed.
“We worked together, we played together, made music and directed videos together. We were instant friends as well as Ultravox comrades,” Ure wrote. “Even after years apart we managed to pick up where we left off like the years in between never existed.”
He continued, “You were the glue that held the band together. You were the logic in the madness and the madness in our lives. It was great to know and grow with you. You are loved and missed old friend.”

Serious movie directors have found success in making children's movies, such as Joe Wright with "Pan" and Wes Anderson with "Fantastic Mr. Fox." These directors often bring their own unique style and storytelling techniques to kids' movies, like Anderson's symmetry and blend of storytelling and visual aesthetics.
While there are many directors whose work is mostly aimed at a young audience, there are some serious movie directors who have made great kids’ movies. The field of children’s movies is a broad but tricky one, as while it gives a lot of creative opportunities for filmmakers, making a successful kids' movie isn’t an easy task. Various filmmakers have dedicated their entire careers to mostly making family-friendly content aimed at children, such as Hayao Miyazaki and Brad Bird, while there are others who have paid a visit to this area without making it the focus of their careers.

Peter Pan has seen as many adaptations as anyone, they come around every few decades, and every now and again one sticks with a generation for a lifetime. The 1953 Disney original certainly had that, as too did 1991s Hook, the film that stuck with me and my generation. Since then the only other adaption that has stuck was the 2003 adaption. The 2003 adaption was another good entry into the legend of Peter Pan, and like the films before, it hooked onto a generation that still love that film today. When a Peter Pan adaptation is done even half right, it finds itself stuck to a generation, it is perhaps a testament to the story J.M. Peter Pan & Wendy finally addresses the problematic Tiger Lily story from the animated Peter Pan after 70 years. Disney's approach to Tiger Lily has been panned for years for its offensive stereotypes and cultural appropriation. The indigenous characters were depicted as racially insensitive caricatures, and the song "What Makes the Red Man Red" is a clear example of blatant racism. However, it's heartening to see that Disney has finally taken notice of the outrage and made a positive change in Peter Pan & Wendy. Alyssa Wapanatâhk's portrayal of Tiger Lily, with authentic Cree language, dress, and craftsmanship, is a significant step toward the respectful representation of indigenous peoples.
Wapanatâhk has expressed her surprise and happiness at Disney's attention to detail in Peter Pan & Wendy and care for the character of Tiger Lily. She has also praised the company for taking steps towards more respectful representation of indigenous peoples in their films.

Once upon a time, Steven Spielberg made a Peter Pan movie, and it was the best Peter Pan movie of them all. I'm talking, of course, about Hook, the 1991 epic fantasy adventure that stars Robin Williams as a grown-up Peter Pan and is full of exactly the kind of gorgeous set pieces and magical whimsy you'd expect when you let Spielberg direct a children's fairy tale. And it puts every other adaptation to shame: the racist and frankly tiresome 1953 Disney animated feature, the 2003 live-action film that no one remembers, and 2015's boring, CGI-bloated Pan, in which someone thought it would be a good idea to cast Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily. Hook surpasses them all in every respect, from the pitch-perfect casting to the world-building to the Spielbergian production value, and of course, John Williams' delightful score.

Though the live-action Peter Pan & Wendy is a remake of Disney's 1953 animated Peter Pan, there are several major differences between the two. Like the animated film, Peter Pan & Wendy follows Wendy and her brothers, John and Michael, as they avoid growing up by traveling from London to Neverland with Peter Pan. On Neverland, they encounter pirates, mermaids, and the Lost Boys. At the end of the film, Wendy and her brothers decide to return home, while Peter goes back to Neverland.
The main characters and story beats of Peter Pan & Wendy and Peter Pan are the same, but the live-action film has added more to the plot and changed problematic elements. Peter Pan & Wendy draws inspiration from Disney's old film, while still making a movie that stands on its own. It also pulls some material from J.M. Barrie's original Peter Pan story that was missing from the 1953 Peter Pan.

Plot: Wendy Darling, a young girl afraid to leave her childhood home behind, meets Peter Pan, a boy who refuses to grow up. Alongside her brothers and a tiny fairy, Tinker Bell, she travels with Peter to the magical world of Neverland. There, she encounters the evil pirate Captain Hook and embarks on a thrilling and dangerous adventure that will change her life forever.

Warning: Contains Spoilers for Peter Pan & WendyDisney's live-action Peter Pan & Wendy makes major updates to Tiger Lily, including her speaking in a different language from the other characters for most of the film. J.M. Barrie's original Peter and Wendy play and novel have long been criticized for their portrayal of Native Americans. Disney's 1953 Peter Pan film faced the same criticism, particularly for the song "What Made the Red Man Red?" When faced with making a live-action adaptation, Disney knew they needed to do something different with Tiger Lily.
Peter Pan & Wendy's director David Lowery and co-writer Toby Halbrooks ensured their Tiger Lily would not be a racist stereotype or a damsel in distress. She plays a major role in helping Peter, Wendy, and the Lost Boys. When it comes to how she speaks and dresses, she is perhaps the most accurate portrayal of Native Americans in a Peter Pan adaptation.

As written by J. M. Barrie in his original 1904 play, “Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up,” the century-old name Peter Pan has always been synonymous with a severe case of arrested development. More expressly, the fear of adulthood, the immature reluctance towards embracing the responsibilities and pains of being a grown-up, unable to gauge the earned rewards of such hardships.
So what could a 21st-century version of such arrested development look like? One that has something to say to today’s grown-ups both mesmerized and puzzled by a fiery younger generation vastly different than them, and today’s kids, being raised by an unprecedented sense of individuality? With “Peter Pan & Wendy,” soulful auteur David Lowery tries to find an answer with mixed results that’s fascinating and refreshing in parts and somewhat wearisome on the whole.

It looks like kids’ movies are dominating the box office right now. Mind you, what looks to be the first billion-dollar blockbuster is based on a decades-old video game. But what about the classic fairy tales, you may ask? Not to worry, although it’s fairly young at a spry 121 years, as opposed to the centuries-old Grimm Brothers stories and assorted myths and legends. And it’s also the 70th anniversary of the definitive animated adaptation from the master artists at the “mouse house”. Ugh, you may be thinking, not another live-action retread of a superb cartoon ala the recent Pinocchio (not the Oscar-winner) or the dreary Dumbo. Well, you’re not really correct as this tale began (after its literary roots) on the stage and has been played by flesh-and-blood actors in versions going back to the silent movie days. And so, here’s another version, this time sharing...

Peter Pan & Wendy, David Lowery’s humanizing interpretation of J.M. Barrie’s existential classic about the boy who refuses to grow up, speaks more to the inner child of jaded adults than it does to actual kids. This version of the fairytale grounds the fundamental wistfulness of the original tale with empathetic backstories and takes care to remedy the original’s overt racism and latent sexism.
Despite criticisms lodged at Lowery (The Green Knight) in the months leading up to this film’s release on Disney+, Peter Pan & Wendy keeps much intact. Lowery and his co-writer Toby Halbrooks have a firm grasp on the enduring qualities of Barrie’s story, which, as they correctly suggest throughout the film, has nothing to do with whether or not the gang of Lost Boys includes girls. The question you may be asking is ‘do we really need yet another take on Peter Pan? Ever since J.M. Barrie published his book “Peter And Wendy” in 1911 there have been countless film, TV, and stage versions of one stripe or another, starting with silents, and of course NBC’s live musical in the 50’s with Mary Martin, and later versions with Sandy Duncan, Cathy Rigby, and just a few years ago another NBC live attempt at it with Allison Williams. Of course there have been big screen spins, neither quite magical, like Joe Wright’s messy 2015 Pan and Spielberg’s overblown Hook with Robin Williams and Julia Roberts. Up to this moment even Broadway has a new Tony contender in the farcical take, Peter Pan Goes Wrong. But for me the one version that resonates the most, to this day, is the Disney 1953 animated feature classic.

In the summer of 2016, writer/director David Lowery pulled off what feels like a magic trick in retrospect: he made a Disney remake that was actually quite good. His take on "Pete's Dragon" may not have set the box office aflame, but his tender approach to a story about an orphaned boy in the forest with only a mammoth dragon for a friend resulted in a low-stakes but wonderful family adventure. Of course, the major reason why "Pete's Dragon" worked so well as a remake is that it eschewed almost everything aside from the aforementioned logline that's present in the 1977 original, from big musical numbers to con-artist bad guys. And "Pete's Dragon" was able to eschew those aspects because while the original has some fans, it's by no means one of Disney's biggest titles.

Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in. Maybe.
Of all the Disney animated films turned live-action re-imaginings the Mouse House has churned out since striking box office gold with Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland", David Lowery's "Pete's Dragon" is one of the only ones I'm willing to go to bat for. Another animated Disney classic is getting the live-action remake treatment and this latest adventure seems genuinely worth getting excited about.
“Peter Pan & Wendy,” which will debut on Disney+ on April 28, hails from co-writer/director David Lowery, the filmmaker behind “The Green Knight” and “The Old Man and the Gun,” and looks to interpolate both the 1953 Disney animated classic and the original J.M. The first trailer for David Lowery's "Peter Pan and Wendy" is here, and it looks a hell of a lot more interesting than most live-action Disney remakes we've seen in recent years — not to mention most live-action adaptations of the J.M. Barrie classic.
Instead of going the star-studded, CGI-stuffed remake route that has been hit (see: "The Lion King") or miss (see: "Pinocchio") for Disney in recent years, the trailer for "Peter Pan and Wendy" spotlights a cast of young up-and-coming actors and visuals that look about as naturalistic as a story about a boy who can fly can be expected to. Sure, the fact that the first look at this movie doesn't take us to the uncanny valley might be a low bar, but "Peter Pan and Wendy" also has a great filmmaker going for it in "The Green Knight" and "A Ghost Story" director David Lowery.

The fantastic world of Neverland is getting reimagined in the first Peter Pan & Wendy trailer. The upcoming film is acting as both a new take on Disney's iconic animated adventure and J.M. Barrie's play revolving around the eponymous young boy that never ages in Neverland and brings the young Wendy and her siblings with him on an adventure. The new adaptation comes from co-writer/director David Lowery, who previously helmed the Pete's Dragon live-action remake.
With just two months remaining until its arrival, Disney has revealed the first Peter Pan & Wendy trailer.

Joe Wright's 2015 film, "Pan," an anachronistic and colorful origin story for Peter Pan, sounded like a good idea on paper. Reimagined origin stories were very much in vogue then throughout popular culture, and the tale of how an immortal elven boy came to Neverland only to become rivals with a one-handed pirate is certainly ripe for exploration. Also, Wright was a hot commodity, having directed a Best Picture Oscar nominee ("Atonement"), a strange action film ("Hanna"), and a high-profile literary adaptation ("Anna Karenina"). Additionally, Wright managed to secure an impressive cast that included Rooney Mara, Cara Delevigne, and Hugh Jackman as Blackbeard the Pirate. Levi Miller played Peter Pan, and Garrett Hedlund played an ally to Pan in the form of the young, sexy, two-handed James Hook, a ship's captain destined to live up to his name.
"Pan" was made for a hefty 150 million. On its opening weekend, it made a rather dinky 15 million.
