Writers/Directors Spenser Cohen & Anna Halberg keep it simple with the PG-13 horror movie Tarot. Instead of a cold open to hook audiences on the horror, Tarot launches straight into introducing the group of seven friends partaking in a party weekend at an isolated manor.
It’s there that they dabble with things they shouldn’t, setting in motion a curse that will pick them off one by one, slasher style. With an equal group of monsters to match, Tarot has the makings of a breezy gateway horror movie perfect for sleepovers, though it’s undermined by surface-level characters and storytelling.
The moment the beer runs dry, forcing the friends to seek entertainment elsewhere, birthday girl Elise (Larsen Thompson) insists that Haley (Harriet Slater) puts her tarot knowledge to good use when they find a mysterious deck within the house. Haley warns that it’s extremely bad luck to borrow...

An evil curse gets awakened in Screen Gems horror movie Tarot when a group of friends recklessly ignore a sacred rule: never use someone else’s deck. Writers/Directors Spenser Cohen & Anna Halberg unleash a variety of Tarot card-inspired entities on the group through practical effects, and create an unexpected connection to Insidious along the way.
The film comes exclusively to movie theaters on May 3, 2024.
Bloody Disgusting spoke with Cohen and Halberg ahead of Tarot‘s release, where the pair shared more about the film’s practical effects-driven horrors and revealed how Tarot drew from Insidious in a specific way.
To start, though, the filmmakers reveal just how closely their horror movie sticks to the source novel Horrorscope by Nicholas Adams. The short answer is, well, it doesn’t at all!

One of the most successful cinematic universes in Hollywood doesn't have any superheroes, isn't set in outer space, and wasn't originally designed as a cinematic universe at all. James Wan's 2013 horror movie "The Conjuring" was made on a budget of just $20 million but became a stunning box office success, grossing more than $320 million worldwide. That success has since spawned a whole world of horror that includes not only two "Conjuring" sequels, but also the spin-off "Annabelle" trilogy, two "Nun" movies, and (tenuously) "The Curse of La Llorona."
A big part of what makes the "Conjuring" movies so frightening is their commitment to practical effects. The strangest supernatural feats are achieved using wire work, contortionists, and stunt performers, while monsters like the Nun and the Crooked Man are real actors in make-up.
Digital effects are used sparingly for certain scares where CGI is the best option (like the sheet scene...

Actress Bonnie Aarons is the iconic face behind Valak's Demon Nun form in The Conjuring movies, terrifying audiences since 2016. Actor Javier Botet played the Crooked Man, another form of Valak, in The Conjuring Joseph Bishara played an alternate design of Valak in the same film.
The demon Valak is one of the most iconic supernatural forces in The Conjuring franchise, and here's who plays the creature in The Nun and the other The Conjuring movies. The Conjuring franchise has turned into one of the biggest horror shared universes in the modern era, with the movies branching out into all kinds of sequels and spin-offs. Although all kinds of demons appear across the various films, Valak is one of the most popular, but the actors behind the monster in The Nun and the other Conjuring movies need some more praise.

"The Conjuring 2" opens with Ed and Lorraine Warren investigating the infamous Amityville house at 112 Ocean Avenue to determine whether or not a demonic presence caused Ronald DeFeo Jr. to commit familial annihilation and the subsequent supernatural events that plagued the Lutz family after they moved into the home. The couple holds a seance and Lorraine is thrust into a terrifying vision where she encounters a demonic nun.
The Nun appears multiple times throughout the film, until Lorraine rightfully addresses it as Valak, a shape-shifting demon, and condemns it back from which it came. James Wan didn't intend for Valak to be such a major player in The Conjuring Universe — honestly, "The Conjuring" was never supposed to spawn a cinematic universe but the fans demanded it — and didn't originally intend for the demon to take the shape of a nun. But The Nun, portrayed by Bonnie Aarons, was so scary...

Insidious: The Red Door star-director Patrick Wilson thought he was done with the Insidious franchise, but The Further wasn’t done with him or his character quite yet.
In 2019, Wilson was quietly looking around for an opportunity to make his directorial debut, and when franchise co-creator Leigh Whannell happened to come up with an idea for a fifth Insidious film involving the return of the Lambert family, Wilson’s agent asked Blumhouse if Wilson could direct and star. One thing led to another, and Wilson found himself brainstorming for his first directorial effort in his backyard with screenwriter Scott Teems. But then the global pandemic derailed the entire world and entertainment industry alike, and so Wilson kept busy as an actor until Insidious 5 got back on track.

As its title suggests, Insidious: The Red Door, the fifth entry in the franchise, returns to the Lambert family to close the door on their ongoing saga with The Further. Set a decade after the events of Insidious: Chapter Two, star Patrick Wilson pulls double duty for this sequel, making his feature debut with a sentimental entry more interested in exploring buried secrets and family trauma than the paranormal. Less a sequel and more a continuation of Chapter Two, The Red Door gives a tender send-off to the Lamberts.
Flashback scenes from Chapter Two catch unfamiliar audiences up to speed; after young Dalton (Ty Simpkins) helps dad Josh (Patrick Wilson) escape the Further and return home, the family decides to suppress their memories. The idea, of course, is to prevent future astral projecting into the Further, closing the door on pervading entities hoping to cross into the real world.

2023 truly is the year for horror. Not only did we get a sixth Scream film on top of Evil Dead Rise, but the Insidious franchise is also back again with a fifth installment. Insidious 5, actually titled Insidious: The Red Door, takes place ten years after the events of Insidious 2. Patrick Wilson reprises his role as Josh Lambert as well as directing the fifth movie.
Other actors and actresses are reprising their roles in this film. Ty Simpkins will once again play the part of Dalton Lambert, Rose Byrne as Renai Lambert, and Lin Shaye as Elise Rainier. One more actor is coming back as well: the music producer Joseph Bishara is to star as the Red Face Demon.

Initially having a more ambiguous name, Insidious 5 has gotten a new title that better highlights an iconic franchise location. The next chapter in the horror series will see the returns of Ty Simpkins and Patrick Wilson as Dalton and Josh Lambert, with the father and son going on a road trip to take the former to college, only for the literal demons of their past to return. In addition to starring, Wilson will also make his directorial debut on Insidious 5 on a script from Halloween Kills' Scott Teems, itself based on a story treatment from franchise creator and star Leigh Whannell.

Learn where to watch Malignant — but don’t watch it alone! Australian director James Wan “conjured” up yet another bone-chilling, blood-curdling horror movie that will keep you up at night hearing every creak and groan of the floorboards and every eerie whistle of the wind through the tree branches.
James Wan, co-creator and director of The Conjuring, Insidious, and Saw, has a feel for fear and a heart for horror. He delivers big once again with the movie that returns him to his roots with obvious relish after he ventured (successfully) into other genres with films like Aquaman and Furious-7. Malignant is everything horror fans love, with plenty of suspense, scares, and a sense of brooding menace building to a shocking climax with a truly jaw-dropping twist.

Whether you love or hate James Wan's "The Conjuring," it's impossible to deny the impact the 2013 film had on horror. Wan fused atmospheric scares with Joseph Bishara's string-filled and spine-tingling score to craft a part-haunted house, part-possession film that jump-scared its way into earning more than 320 million at the worldwide box office. By 2021, "The Conjuring" franchise has earned 2 billion, as confirmed by Deadline.
While "The Conjuring" was marketed as a story based on true events, Wan and co-writers Chad Hayes and Carey W. Hayes took several creative liberties when bringing the Warrens' investigation of the Perrons' family house to life. (For example, the film's exorcism...

Waxwork Records and WaterTower Music are proud to present Malignant Original Motion Picture Score by Joseph Bishara. Malignant is the latest creation from Conjuring universe architect James Wan. The film marks director Wan’s return to his roots with this original horror thriller. In the film, Madison is paralyzed by shocking visions of grisly murders, and her torment worsens as she discovers that these waking dreams are in fact terrifying realities.
Joseph Bishara is an American composer, music producer, and actor best known for his work scoring films such as Insidious, The Conjuring, Annabelle, and The Prodigy. He is known for his avant-garde style and unique approach to instrumentation and composition that suits horror films particularly well. Bishara disregards horror film score conventions by employing gut-wrenching string dissonance, haunting electronics, and sudden crescendos. Bishara’s Malignant score offers his distinctive style of disquieting strings, pulsing electronics, droning synths, and haunting sound design.

Marking his return to horror after a detour into family-friendly blockbuster filmmaking with “Aquaman,” James Wan’s “Malignant” certainly proves that the director-producer still knows how to get down and dirty in the genre where he made his name. Although in a way he’s still operating in studio franchise mode, as “Malignant” might well be thought of as the most demented “Frozen” remake imaginable.
Like “Frozen,” “Malignant” centers on two sisters, one of them bubbly and optimistic, the other haunted and possibly possessed with supernatural powers. The similarities don’t necessarily end there, either – although the sisters’ hair color has been switched – but to reveal too much more would be to ruin the film’s most essential quality: its willingness to steadily and purposefully descend to the lowest levels of delirious lunacy, and then keep going further still. Working from a script by Akela Cooper, Wan tosses elements of...

As someone who has been a longtime fan of James Wan’s genre output, I was extremely excited when it was announced that he was going to be giving us another original horror movie to enjoy via Malignant. And the best compliment I can give Malignant is that I went into this movie thinking it was going to be one thing, and for a good portion of the film, it very much lulls you into thinking your expectations are spot-on. But by the time the second half kicks in, Wan delivers an experience that is so shockingly weird and jaw-droppingly unexpected, that I spent most of my time with my mouth agape and cackling at a variety of moments with unfettered glee.
There’s no doubt in my mind that with Malignant, Wan has created a movie that will undoubtedly be divisive amongst audiences, where mainstream fans will probably like...

Warner Bros. has released a brand new trailer for Malignant. This is an original horror movie from James Wan, who has asserted himself as something of a modern horror master. Wan is the co-creator of Saw and Insidious and, perhaps most importantly, the main man behind The Conjuring universe. This represents his return to the horror genre following Aquaman, and it looks to be everything we've come to expect from the filmmaker over the years.
The trailer wastes no time. We see a woman having terrifying visions, leaving her to wake up in a panicked sweat. But as blood begins spilling in the real world, it becomes clear these visions are far more than just nightmares. Things escalate further when we learn of her old, supposedly imaginary friend Gabriel. Turns out he may not have been so imaginary after all. It promises lots of scares and a seemingly high body count.

The Conjuring-verse, as pretty clear by its title, has always invited slightly more reverence for The Conjuring films. In spite of the franchise having some excellent spin-off outings in Annabelle: Creation and Annabelle Comes Home, James Wan’s acclaimed The Conjuring and The Conjuring 2, have always been the more respected backbone of this horror universe. So, with that fact comes a degree more hype for The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. This is a mixed blessing. Indeed, had this have been a spin-off story in this series, I would wager it may have received warmer reviews than it has, yet, despite some seemingly nonplus reactions, I felt this third film fit right in with the other two.

Dreamkatcher is a horror film from the state of New York. Developed by director Kerry Harris and writer Dan V. Shea, this feature stars Radha Mitchell (Silent Hill) as a Manhattan therapist. She travels upstate, when her adopted son begins experiencing nightmares. Then, a strange neighbour appears in the woods, adding to the boy's terror. Dreamkatcher also stars: Lin Shaye (Insidious), Jules Wilcox (Under the Silver Lake) and Joseph Bishara. To show at the European Film Market later this month, a new movie poster and stills are available for this thriller. Some of the stills, from Film Mode Entertainment, show the film's villain. Looking like a night hag, this creature of the night stalks Josh as he sleeps, tempting him to act violently (shown below). In the past, there was a mythical creature called the night hag, which was thought to create sleep paralysis. This myth looks to be taken to an extreme in Dreamkatcher.
