It’s a cliché but it’s a cliché for a reason: Netflix puts out so many movies that most people never even hear about them. That sucks, because while they can’t all be bangers, a lot of those Netflix Originals deserve an audience. Especially their horror flicks, because believe it or not they’ve put out a lot of fantastic scary flicks for fans of all ages.
Let’s take a look at the best Netflix Original horror movies, shall we…?

Sometimes, there is no better way to spend a couple of hours of your time than by sitting down and watching a clever, gripping psychological thriller. Fortunately, Netflix has more than a few noteworthy films that fit that very category on its platform right now. Some of them are harder to find than others, though, which is why we here at TheWrap have picked out seven, in particular, that you should add to your watchlist.
Here are the best psychological thrillers streaming on Netflix right now.
“Psycho” (Paramount Pictures) “Psycho” (1960)
“Psycho” may be known best as one of Hollywood’s first — and most influential — slasher films, but there is a reason its title is what it is. The actual number of bodies that fall throughout the film’s runtime is surprisingly low, given its reputation, but “Psycho” still cuts like a sharp knife. That is because of the dreamy surreality...

Horror in 2024 proved that the genre thrives on reinvention, delivering a lineup as daring as it was unsettling. While the year saw its share of sequels and prequels, what stood out were films that reimagined old tropes with fresh perspectives. From slashers infused with arthouse aesthetics to nuns with evil pregnancies, horror expanded its boundaries. Themes of bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom resonated strongly, reflecting societal anxieties in the wake of seismic legal changes, while other films boldly tackled aliens, vampires, fanatics, and class disparity. The year wasn’t without its disappointments, but when horror soared, it truly transcended. Cinephiles flocked to both indie gems and boundary-pushing studio fare, underscoring a collective appetite for narratives that terrify and provoke. So let us take a look at the ten standout English-language horror movies of 2024—movies that not only chilled us to the bone but also made us think.

I’ve often measured the progress of my year by the movies I’ve seen. From the trashy B-movies in ‘dumpuary’ to the summer blockbuster and, eventually, the onslaught of ‘prestige fare’ and an overwhelming amount of screeners in December, movies have been a marker of time. I know, for example, that Halloween is coming up when my wife puts on Practical Magic or that Christmas is close when I make my yearly trip to Boston to see It’s a Wonderful Life with close friends. The same goes for my yearly panic when top-tens are due and I realize I have a pile of screeners begging for my attention.

It’s been quite the year for horror fans across the board, and there’s been no shortage of good content. We’ve seen a return for beloved or forgotten franchises, original horror, and horror TV. As someone who tries their best to keep up, I’ve seen a decent amount this year. Of course not everything, because accessibility to film festivals is an issue for me. And there’s still horror media that I haven’t seen quite yet. Why? My watchlist is ever-growing, and 2024 has been…let’s just say a time and leave it at that.
Narrowing down top 10 or top anything, is nearly impossible for me personally. However, I was able to do it and I crawled over mental glass for this task. I’ve decided to go with my favorite performances in horror TV and films from women. As of the time of writing this,...

How Is It The End Of The Year Already? Time, y’all. Life’s proverbial hourglass turns over again, and with it comes another fresh batch of horror titles ready to rock our worlds. But! Before we start digging into 2025’s crop, Daily Dead has once again generously given me a space to highlight my favorite horror “things” of the year.
I’m going to stick with movies because while every year is a good year for horror movies (which I had to remind doubters yet again), 2024 was a Really good year for horror movies. In trying to whittle down a Top 10, I stared at double the amount of titles I thought deserved recognition. Therefore, I’m sticking to the screen — I need every single slot.
10. A Quiet Place Day One

Perhaps in a year where wars are raging, the planet is burning, and the cruelest people are elected to the highest offices, we don’t deserve the best movies. You can find plenty of films that bring joy over the past twelve months, for sure. But if we’re talking about the overall level of awesome-ness of the cinematic offerings, about works that feel undeniable, it seems to me that 2024 did not deliver the way, say, 2023 did.
Then again, maybe that’s just me being grumpy and anxious from all the ways the world offscreen is going wrong, because who can deny the electrifying energy and humanist glow of Sean Baker’s Anora? Or the funny, phantasmagoric family portrait that is Tyler Taormina’s Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point?...

This has been a phenomenal year for horror movies. I’m talking one of the greatest years the genre has ever seen. Love it or hate it, Netflix is still a dominating force in the streaming wars. As of 2024, the platform has 282 million paid subscribers worldwide, with roughly 96 million of those coming from North America alone. That means if you recommend a worthwhile Netflix original movie for someone to check out, there's a good chance they already have a subscription lined up to watch it. And recommendations can be so very crucial, as Netflix constantly cycles through movies and TV shows to the degree that it's easy for a real gem to get lost in the mix.
Many Netflix movies don't wind up in theaters at all, with a few noteworthy exceptions. That means there's typically a small window where a film can make an impact and get some buzz going before it's shifted out of the carousel at the top of the homepage. 2024 had a host of great Netflix originals, from...

Oops, all Netflix! Nobody would dispute that the mega-streaming platform easily leads the pack in terms of total subscribers, brand awareness, and catchy slogans. (Don't tell me that Prime Video and Disney+ haven't been trying to chase the coattails of "Netflix and chill" ever since they first debuted.) Netflix has also thoroughly disrupted the film industry and its conventional reliance on theaters worldwide, taking smash-hit franchises like the "Knives Out" movies and snatching them right out from under Lionsgate's nose ... though it might have met its match with Greta Gerwig insisting on a theatrical release for "The Chronicles of Narnia.

Previous horror movies have used knives and chainsaws to kill off their characters, but Netflixs new body-swap thriller Its Whats Inside manages to turn peanut butter into a deadly weapon. Its Whats Insides Bodies Bodies Bodies-like plot revolves around a group of friends who attend a pre-wedding party, where an old acquaintance who they havent seen for years turns up with a mysterious briefcase. When he reveals that the briefcase holds a dangerous new body-swapping technology, a seemingly harmless party game quickly turns ugly. All the friends betrayals and home truths start spilling out, and the bodies start piling up.
Written and directed by Greg Jardin, Its Whats Inside is one of the most inventive and idiosyncratic spins on the body-swap genre to come along in a while. Once the characters all start switching their consciousnesses in between each others bodies, Jardin starts laying on the twists. Two of the...

Its Whats Inside quickly became one of my favorite films of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival and I was beyond thrilled to get the opportunity to chat with director Greg Jardin and his ensemble while in Park City. But, one person was missing from the conversation and, if youve seen Its Whats Inside, you well know that the films concept hinges on every single member of the cast being able to deliver top-tier work as a unit. Thankfully, Netflix scooped up the film at the festival for a whopping $17 million and now Its Whats Inside is available to stream on Netflix. That meant the missing member of the group was busy promoting this massive genre storytelling feat, and you can bet I jumped on the opportunity to chat with her. Its Alycia Debnam-Carey.

It's What's Inside was a hit at the Sundance Film Festival and SXSW. That's why, according to Deadline, Netflix shelled out something in the range of $17 million for the rights. But the body-swap horror movie, directed by Greg Jardin, is complicated not by the various characters' desires, but by the fact that there are eight people to swap bodies with.
In the film, a group of college friends gathers eight years later on the night before one of them, Reuben, is set to get married. Reuben has sent everyone else away, including his fiance, so the group can party like they used to. But then a friend they haven't seen since school, Forbes, shows up, and he comes with a device in a suitcase that allows him to switch everyone's bodies. But whose bodies does everyone end up in? Well, they play the body swap game three times, and by the end,...

This article contains spoilers for "It's What's Inside."
As fantastical as the concept seems, the first body swap movie dates all the way back to 1916 with the British fantasy flick "Vice Versa," where a young schoolboy magically swaps bodies with his overbearing father. It's based on the even older 1882 novel of the same name and would mark the start of one of the most evergreen cinematic tropes that exists beyond the confines of genre. Body swap movies are most prominent in family-friendly comedy flicks like the "Freaky Friday" franchise or the criminally underrated "Wish Upon a Star" with Danielle Harris and a young Katherine Heigl, or even action films like John Woo's "Face/Off." Science-fiction films usually explore body swapping as some sort of technological advancement, comic books boast plenty of body swap stories (so it's only a matter of time before we see one in live-action), and even horror...

The body-swapping genre is getting a fresh and energetic twist with Greg Jardin's It's What's Inside. The sci-fi horror-comedy serves as Jardin's feature directorial debut, with the filmmaker having previously made a name for himself as a director both in shorts and in music videos. A group of college friends' reunion party becomes a more surreal adventure when one person finds a mind-bending device in It's What's Inside. The group is composed of Shelby, Cyrus, Reuben, Dennis, Nikki, Brooke and Maya, who come back together at Reuben's family home to celebrate his upcoming nuptials. Initially planning a night of relaxation and nostalgic reflections on their friendship, the arrival of their estranged group member, Forbes, brings with it a machine that allows them all to swap bodies, which subsequently becomes a dangerous game that leads to long-hidden secrets and biases.

There seems to be a new subgenre of horror/thriller movies emerging of late: ‘Game night gone wrong’. We’ve had the bloody-murder of Bodies Bodies Bodies and the demonic possession of Talk To Me — and now we have the literal mind-bending chaos of It’s What’s Inside, a fun and stylish rethink of body-swap movies. What if, this film posits, instead of two people swapping bodies, as has been traditional — it was eight people?
It has been described as “Clue for Zoomers”, which is not far off the mark. Like Bodies Bodies Bodies and Talk To Me, this is a film made explicitly for and about Generation Z, and deeply considers their obsessions, anxieties and pathologies. It begins in a frantic manner, reflecting the social-media generation’s attention-demanded brains, as Shelby (Brittany O'Grady), our lead, frantically scrolls through her Instagram, bombarded with data and input. Greg Jardin, director of genre-bending Sundance darling It’s What’s Inside, knows you’re going to expect his film to be a horror movie. The buzzy festival hit has got all the trappings of the familiar genre: from the creepy, dimly lit home where danger could lurk in every corner to a cast of attractive young people. It even debuts during spooky season — It’s What’s Inside is now streaming on Netflix. But the movie that audiences — and critics — couldn’t get enough of is hardly a slasher.
“We never considered it horror,” Jardin tells Oscar nominee Colman Domingo, who executive produced It’s What’s Inside alongside his creative partner and husband, Raúl Domingo. “I’d say it’s a sci-fi thriller with jokes.”

Not every friends group's reunion can be full of nostalgia and love, as seen in It's What's Inside. The Netflix sci-fi comedy focuses on Shelby, Cyrus, Reuben, Dennis, Nikki, Brooke and Maya, a group of friends who gather to celebrate Reuben's impending wedding, alongside their estranged college friend Forbes, who brings a mysterious device to the party that allows for body swapping. As they initially enjoy the surreal experience, tensions rise when the changing leads to old secrets being revealed, and puts multiple lives at risk.

Everybody plays everybody in It’s What’s Inside. In writer-director Greg Jardin’s new comedy/mystery/thriller/science-fiction spectacular, nothing — and no one — is as it seems. What starts as an innocent pre-wedding get-together quickly becomes something a little … freaky.
“A bunch of friends get together in a house,” Jardin tells Tudum. “One of them brings a body-swapping machine. He suggests they play a game with it where they can all simultaneously swap bodies. And then the night devolves into existential chaos.”
That’s the short story. For the longer version, you’ll have to watch It’s What’s Insideon Netflix. Below, you can learn all about the actors inhabiting the bodies of this body-hopping good time.
Now that you’ve met the cast of It’s What’s Inside in their original bodies, let’s get things mixed up. The suitcase Forbes brings along to the party contains a mysterious device...

It’s a special occurrence when a film can pull off something entirely original. We’ve seen so many iterations of so many different stories, that sometimes watching movies can feel a bit like playing the same mad libs-style game over and over. Thankfully people like Greg Jardin exist who can bring something new to the table. Using science as the crux for the swapping of bodies, the story for It’s What’s Inside is able to focus on identity and the complex nature of relationships. And it does so brilliantly. This is easily one of my favorite horror films of the year (Bumbray saw it earlier this year and loved it too) and you’re going to want to check it out when it comes to Netflix.

The sci-fi comedy premiered on October 4 and centers on a group of friends, whose pre-wedding reunion quickly spirals out of control when estranged member Forbes (David Thompson) appears with a body-swapping device. Along with Thompson, the cast of Its Whats Inside includes Brittany OGrady, James Morosini, Alycia Debnam-Carey, Gavin Leatherwood, Nina Bloomgarden, Reina Hardesty and Devon Terrell. With uniquely motivated characters and an open ending, Its Whats Inside 2 seems possible, but would likely depend on Jardin's involvement.

Greg Jardin’s high-concept techno-thriller It’s What’s Inside weaves a tangeled web of deceit and deception among a group of old friends gathering together for one last fling before the group’s first wedding sends them all into the world of adult relationships and responsibilities. Reuben, the man of the hour, has invited all the usual suspects but threw the group a curveball when he also invited Forbes, an estranged friend who hasn’t spoken to anyone since a big dustup split the group 8 years ago.
As we all know, it’s rude to come to a party empty-handed but rather than bringing a bottle of wine, Forbes has brought an opportunity with him. Now, Forbes has made a bit of a name for himself in the tech world since the group last saw him, like a Great Value brand Mark Zuckerberg. He promises the group an experience like no other…...

Greg Jardin, the writer and director of the new Netflix film It’s What’s Inside, is speaking out about the potential for a sequel.
The movie follows a group of friends who gather for a pre-wedding party that descends into an existential nightmare when an estranged friend arrives with a mysterious game that awakens long-hidden secrets, desires, and grudges.
The indie film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and Netflix purchased it for $17 million.
“It was my first experience,” Greg told Variety. “With any of that stuff, there’s essentially a bidding war that lasted about 36 hours. I was in meetings with our financiers and sales agent. But when the bidding war ended and Netflix bought it for $17 million, I was like, ‘I can’t believe they spent this.’ I still can’t. I told them, ‘It’s crazy — you guys spent this much money on this movie.

Writer-Director Greg Jardin takes the familiar thrills of body swap movies and runs riot in his maddeningly exhilarating debut, “It’s What’s Inside.” Released on Netflix, the film’s abundant number of successful attempts at threading the needle of executing genre tropes culminate in a stylishly smart outing. With slick camerawork, smoothly sharp cuts, and a young cast embracing the opportunity to go bonkers, Jardin has all his cylinders firing simultaneously and seamlessly. The result is a wild ride, a psychological thriller here to swoon the horror aficionados (and others) this Halloween season.

Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for “It’s What’s Inside,” now streaming on Netflix.
Writer and director Greg Jardin’s debut feature, “It’s What’s Inside,” is a body-swapping mystery. Yet Jardin had his own out-of-body experience the day the movie started an intense bidding war at Sundance in January.
“It’s still surreal now,” he says. “We made the movie in a bit of a bubble, $2.5 million independent, just with hopes that someone would buy it at a festival. Getting into Sundance alone was awesome. And then our first offer came in 24 hours after our premiere, and the offer started at $5 million, which was double our budget. I was like, ‘Man, this is incredible.'”
But the buzz around Park City kept growing.

The Director Of Netflix's Latest Sci-Fi Thriller Directed A Must-Watch Promo For A Now-Canceled Show
Today marks the streaming release of "It's What's Inside," a terrific and twisty new sci-fi thriller that Netflix acquired for $17 million out of this year's Sundance Film Festival. The movie is one of my favorites of the year so far, so naturally I was curious about its writer and director, Greg Jardin. "It's What's Inside" is his feature debut; he got his start making short films and music videos before finally getting his chance at making a full length feature. For several years in between, he paid his bills by directing promos for Netflix shows, including series like "13 Reasons Why" and "Wednesday." One of Jardin's promos in particular, which was made for the streamer's canceled-after-one-season live-action adaptation of "Cowboy Bebop" starring John Cho, Daniella Pineda, and Mustafa Shakir, is bursting with the same kind of energy and verve that's been injected into his new feature film. Years after the show came and went,...

The first weekend of October has arrived, and for most of us, that means it's finally time to start our annual Halloween movie marathons. It's the season of Hocus Pocus and horror movies and all things witchy and spooky, which accounts for one of the three top Netflix new releases this weekend.
This week, Netflix dropped a ton of new movies and shows, including throwbacks and recent favorites alike. Among the new additions are Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, Yellowjackets season 1, Psycho, Halloween, Robin Hood, It Chapter Two, and so many more.
There's something for everyone to watch this weekend, especially if you're still catching up on recently released Netflix originals like Nobody Wants This, Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, and Unsolved Mysteries volume 5.
But if you're looking to dive into some new releases, should you check out the new horror comedy movie It's What's Inside?...

Greg Jardin’s “It’s What’s Inside” taps into the template of game nights that has hit a bit of a cultural flashpoint with the recent phenomenal success of films like “Talk to Me” and “Bodies Bodies Bodies.” The inherent chaos and looseness of the situation, as well as the playfully shifting tension within a circle of friends, can provide the bulwark for scintillating, edgy dramas. These circumstances are rife with unpredictable stakes. Things seem to be almost constantly perched on the anvil of disaster. No one knows when and how the mood can darken or lighten. This giddying thrill and uncertainty form the trope’s biggest strengths.

‘It’s What’s Inside’ Netflix Review: Body-swap Horror Might Be The Perfect Place To Start Spooktober
If you’re the kind of person who enjoys the specific genre that is Gen Z satirical horror-comedies like Bodies Bodies Bodies or Talk To Me, though the latter’s not really a comedy, then It’s What’s Inside certainly has to make your watchlist right this instant. The movie, now on Netflix, is the definition of party chaos, which plays out in an interesting, comprehensive, and horrifying way—a thrilling combination if you ask me. It’s What’s Inside tells the story of 8 college mates reuniting at a pre-wedding party to celebrate in a massive mansion with some funky set decor. The group’s super excited, but there’s one guy who’s been away for a very long time. Beware, my friends, if an estranged bud comes your way and sets up a party game, it’s likely things aren’t going to go well. Especially when drinks and drugs are involved.

One of the highest-profile acquisitions from this year's Sundance Film Festival is finally available for all to see. The movie is "It's What's Inside," a twisted new sci-fi thriller about a group of college friends who reunite the night before a wedding, and one of their strange pals shows up invited with a mysterious suitcase. The group ultimately decides to play a game -- one that has consequences they never could have predicted, which allows simmering tensions, resentments, and attractions between members of the group to be explored in ways that are sometimes sexy, cathartic, horrifying, or all of those things simultaneously.
The movie marks the feature directorial debut of Greg Jardin, an exciting new voice in filmmaking who has directed a few shorts and music videos and is hopefully going to get a well-deserved career boost when audiences realize how unusual and creative this project truly is. If you...

It’s What’s Inside filmmaker Greg Jardin spent eight years trying to land $10 million for a still-unproduced sci-fi comedy. In 2016, he then pivoted to a genre-bending idea that is now his feature directorial debut, spending another eight years trying to get it in front of a festival audience. That opportunity finally came at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2024, and within three days of It’s What’s Inside’s world premiere, Jardin and his producing team landed a $17 million acquisition deal from Netflix.
Jardin — who’s had a healthy career making shorts, music videos and promos for Netflix projects such as Wednesday and When They See Us — had modest expectations for his comedic sci-fi thriller leading up to Sundance. In fact, his only concern was that his $2.5 million film didn’t create a loss for his financing and producing partners at Such. If there’s one thing movies have taught us it’s you should never, ever be alone in a house. Heck, even with other people. You’re just going to get haunted, or you’re going to get slashed, or at the very least your place will be an absolute mess in the morning and you’ll have to tell your parents what really happened. So go outside, dang it! You’re more likely to star in a romantic comedy if you’re not trapped in an isolated mansion on a dark and gloomy night, making side-eyes at your old college friends who secretly hate you or want you dead.
Then again, if you do stay inside, you might as well watch Greg Jardin’s engrossingly mean-spirited “It’s What’s Inside,” which takes the familiar setup — we sure are alone in this house and nothing bad could possibly happen to us...

What’s inside It’s What’s Inside? Enough to make your head spin. In the new comedy-thriller, a body-swap game among a group of friends at a pre-wedding party goes horribly wrong — then those bodies get swapped again, and things get even worse.
It can get a little confusing. Even writer-director Greg Jardin got a little mixed up writing it. “In that first outline, I literally just made a Photoshop diagram of eight people’s heads with their names,” Jardin tells Tudum. “And then I’d just put ‘This person is in this body now’ so I had it all visually.”
But there’s one twist Jardin kept out of his diagrams — the true identity of Forbes (David Thompson). “Hopefully, everyone’s performance as Forbes will just have a new meaning upon rewatch,” Jardin says. “We put in...

The Sundance audience at The Ray Theater had no idea what to expect from “It’s What’s Inside.” The film marked a directorial debut (Greg Jardin), had exactly zero stars in the cast, and was only teased with a vague logline about some “mysterious suitcase” ruining a wedding party.
Likewise, the film’s producer William Rosenfeld didn’t know what he’d get out of the film festival’s audience. What he got from them was an “explosion” — one that both changed the film’s fortune and brought in a small fortune.
“Oh shit, it’s that kind of movie,” Rosenfeld recalled of when the audience finally realized early on what that suitcase actually contains and does to the protagonists.
Just three days after that premiere, Netflix acquired the genre-bending teen/horror/comedy/mind-fuck movie for $17 million, marking one of the biggest sales in Sundance history.

Dark secrets, resentment, and jealousy raucously bubble up to the surface in writer/director Greg Jardin’s feature debut, It’s What’s Inside. A pre-wedding reunion amongst former college friends begins with easy revelry as eight gather to reminisce and imbibe in mind-altering substances. Only none know just how mind-bending the night will become when a suitcase emerges to introduce a new party game, one that catapults the group into an identity-bending funhouse of sci-fi comedy and horror. Its irreverent tone and Jardin’s visual eye ensure a highly entertaining time, though it becomes prone to tangled knots.
The opening introduction to college sweethearts Shelby (Brittany O’Grady) and Cyrus (James Morosini) sets the manic, social media-obsessed culture and comedic tone as the pair bicker over a botched attempt to rekindle the passion in their relationship. Shelby’s sweet intentions are undermined by insecurities and suspicions that Cyrus isn’t entirely being truthful with her.

‘The Big Chill’ Meets ‘Freaky Friday’ by Way of ‘Black Mirror’ — Greg Jardin on ‘It’s What’s Inside’
When writer, director, and editor Greg Jardin began working on “It’s What’s Inside,” his expectations were modest. “I’d been trying to make a film for 10 years and was unsuccessful because my other projects were too large,” he told IndieWire. “I wrote ‘It’s What’s Inside‘ as a low-budget, one-location thing really just as a means to make a movie. I was hoping that someone would buy it and it would break even.”
“It’s What’s Inside” did a lot more than break even, selling to Netflix for a reported $17 million after a triumphant screening at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival. It’s easy to see why Jardin’s film connected with audiences as well as buyers; its story of old friends (and enemies) who reunite for a wedding and find their lives thrown into chaos by a machine that allows them to switch bodies is a wild and hilarious ride that veers...
