Today, Netflix released the official trailer and key art for the new modern Western drama, Ransom Canyon. Starring Josh Duhamel and Minka Kelly, the new series will debut on April 17.
Welcome to Ransom Canyon, where love, loss, and loyalty collide beneath the crimson mesas of Texas Hill Country. With three ranching family dynasties locked in a contest for control of the land, their lives and legacies are threatened by outside forces intent on destroying their way of life.
At the center of it all is stoic rancher Staten Kirkland (Josh Duhamel), who is healing from a heartbreaking loss and on a quest for vengeance. Staten’s only glimmer of hope rests in the eyes and heart of Quinn O’Grady (Minka Kelly), longtime family friend and owner of the local dancehall.
But as the battle to save Ransom wages on, a mysterious cowboy drifts into town, dredging up secrets from the past.

Updated, March 27, 2025: A new trailer, set to “Texas Sun” by Khruangbin and Leon Bridges, has arrived for Netflix’s latest Wester TV series Ransom Canyon, based on the book by Jodi Thomas.
“In Ransom Canyon,” Josh Duhamel’s voice says over shots of ranchers riding horses, the main thoroughfare of the small Texas town, high school football games and more. “Everyone’s running from something, or running to something.”
Duhamel stars as Staten Kirkland, one of the main ranchers in the titular town, who is part of a large ensemble of the new Netflix show, out April 17.
“What’s up with that guy anyway?” Jack Schumacher’s Yancy Grey, who can be seen later on in the trailer risking it all for a rodeo ride, asks Cap Fuller (James Brolin) about the stoic Staten.
“He lost everything,” Brolin replies over a montage of a car wreck and police sirens.

Move over Paramount, Netflix is coming for your audience of Western fans. The biggest streaming platform is trying to capture the spark that Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone, Landman, and other series have ignited by creating their own Western franchises. The year began with American Primeval, an epic Western thriller about the Utah Massacre, and while it wasn't critically acclaimed (though MovieWeb loved it), it was certainly popular. Now comes Ransom Canyon, which cynics may call a Yellowstone rip-off, but which seems poised to certainly attract a strong audience. The synopsis reads as follows:
"Created, written, and executive produced by April Blair, Ransom Canyon is a romance-fueled family drama and contemporary Western saga that charts the intersecting lives of three ranching families, all set against the rugged expanse of Texas Hill Country."
“At its core, Ransom Canyon isn’t just a town. It’s an idea. It’s the painful longing for your first love.

Karma’s a bitch… and she loves a genre flick.
M. Night Shyamalan just put the spotlight back on viral terror with “Trap,” an escape room horror about a killer attempting to outmaneuver the cops at a concert packed with iPhones. In fewer theaters this weekend (but streaming too!) is director Marcus Dunstan’s “#Amfad: All My Friends Are Dead.” That’s another internet horror movie featuring a major pop music event — only here the murderer and their victims never make it inside the venue.
Starring ex-Nickelodeon favorite Jade Pettyjohn and none other than JoJo Siwa herself, “#Amfad” sees its masked villain ensnare a van full of wannabe internet celebs in a “Seven”-esque killing spree at a remote Airbnb. Both former kid-stars-turned-social-media-heavyweights, Pettyjohn and Siwa worked together years ago when the “Dance Moms” legend guest-starred with series regular Pettyjohn on “School of Rock.”

#Amfad: All My Friends Are Dead premieref at Tribeca with a talented young cast, led by Jade Pettyjohn, offering a fresh take on the typical horror movie premise. Director Marcus Dunstan updates the horror concept of Seven Deadly Sins, exploring voyeurism and the facade of social media in the age of smartphones. The script of All My Friends Are Dead plays with the Final Girl trope, creating a complex lead character in Sarah who navigates a chaotic and unexpected journey.
#Amfad: All My Friends Are Dead, which just premiered at this year's Tribeca Film Festival, is a titillating and intelligent horror movie that plays on the familiar premise of friends heading to a remote location on a road trip. 2021 hasn’t exactly been the year of great Stephen King adaptations on the small screen. “Lisey’s Story” wasn’t the cerebral thriller it should have been. And the newest attempt at “The Stand” was a major dud almost from its onset. But, as they say, the third time’s a charm with “Chapelwaite,” a pitch-black horror set in 1850s Maine, where vampires rule the looming eternal night.
Like many great “Nosferatu”-lite narratives, “Chapelwaite,” based upon King’s “Jerusalem’s Lot,” isn’t merely fixated on the bloodthirsty undead stalking the innocent humans trembling in their candlelit homes; it explores our relationship with death, grief, family and what it means to have eternal life. It begins at Chapelwaite manor, where in 1817 a petrified young boy named Charles Boone unsuccessfully attempts to escape his rabid, shovel-wielding father (Sebastien Labelle), who’s dug a grave in his name right outside their home.
