The older fellow driving with him proves how panther-like the driver is when he smothers him with a “have a nice day” grocery bag. He takes the gun from his waistband and shoves the car down the ravine before using the nearby bulldozer to begin dropping dirt on the truck.

Per Deadline, Othello has now broken the record for the highest-grossing play in Broadway history. In its previews at the Barrymore Theater, the Shakespeare play managed to bring in $2,818,297. This makes it the top-performing eight-performance play in Broadway history, breaking the previous record held by Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which made $2,718,488.

Othello, starring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, became the highest-grossing play in Broadway history last week, with a total of $2,818,297.00 for eight performances.

The total came as the play is only in its second week of previews and played to 100% capacity. Othello will open Sunday, March 23, for a strictly limited engagement through Sunday, June 8, at the Barrymore Theatre.

The average ticket price last week was $338.09, which was also the highest on Broadway for the week and hundreds of dollars above the next highest price. The prior week, Othello also topped the prices of all other shows with an average ticket price of $361.90. That week, the play grossed $2.6 million across its first seven performances.

The previous record for highest-grossing play was held by Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, which grossed $2,718,488 for the holiday week ending Dec. 31, 2023.

Marvel Studios’ upcoming team-up movie, Thunderbolts*, will now do battle with an action thriller from the director behind the likes of The Grey and The A-Team, Joe Carnahan, as his story of a shady special forces team known as Shadow Force gets a release date. Shadow Force will now land in theaters on the same day as The Thunderbolts, May 2, 2025, meaning audiences will have two action outings to enjoy on the big screen this summer season.

Led by Kerry Washington and Omar Sy (X-Men: Days of Future Past), Shadow Force “follows the duo who once were the leaders of a multinational special forces group called Shadow Force. They broke the rules by falling in love and go underground in order to protect their son. With a large bounty on their heads, and the vengeful Shadow Force hot on their trail, one family’s fight becomes all-out war.”

The Tyler Perry-directed Netflix film also won for best actress in a motion picture, with a truly shocked Kerry Washington accepting that prize.

“You know how on awards shows when people look surprised, I never believed that they’re really surprised, until Beyoncé at the Grammys,” Washington said. “But I’m just shocked. I’m shocked. Because the women that I’m nominated with are so extraordinary. I love you all so much. I’m honored to be in a category with you.”

“The Six Triple Eight” scored the outstanding motion picture prize at the 56th NAACP Image Awards on Saturday night.

The Netflix war drama film — based on the true story of an all-Black, all-female battalion in WWII — won awards earlier this week for ensemble, as well as breakthrough performance and supporting actress for Ebony Obsidian. This evening, Kerry Washington took home best actress in a motion picture, bringing the film’s NAACP Image Award wins to five.

“At a time when our history is under attack, to be able to tell a film that’s about how amazing Black women are and have always been, and to have it be a top 10 film in over 85 countries all over the world — to have it resonate so powerfully here in this country, it’s just a real honor,” Washington told Variety on the NAACP Image Awards red carpet at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium.

Washington starred as Robert McCall, a former Marine and Dia officer who finds himself back in action protecting a teenage trafficking victim from the Russian mafiain 2014's The Equalizer. The film, which had an estimated budget of around $55 million, was a box office smash, pulling in over $192 million during its box office run. A sequel, The Equalizer 2, arrived in 2018 and saw Washington reprise his role as McCall, this timeon a mission of revenge after one of his friends is murdered.

Filmmaker Spike Lee took to his Instagram account to give fans a first glimpse of his upcoming Highest 2 Lowest, a remake of Akira Kurosawa's classic film noir High and Low, starring Denzel Washington. In the post, Lee thanked "the judge and jury for the not guilty verdict," referring to rapper and Highest 2 Lowest co-star A$AP Rocky's acquittal on felony assault charges on Feb. 18, 2025.

Alongside the caption, Lee shared a still of Rocky from the film, wearing what appears to be an orange prison uniform. Very little is know about the project other than it's a "reinterpretation of the great Kurosawa," according to Lee (via Variety). The original film, High and Low, follows Kingo Gondo (frequent Kurosawa collaborator Toshiro Mifune), a wealthy shoe company executive whose chauffeur's son is mistakenly kidnapped and ransomed for 30 million yen.
