Industry insiders have now confirmed that Ryan Reynolds will appear as Deadpool in Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday, ending months of online speculation and making his recent Instagram tease far more than just a clever troll. Late Monday night/early Tuesday morning, Reynolds posted a picture of the Avengers logo without comment, sparking a frenzy of fan theories. Up until now, his absence from the official cast announcement had puzzled many, especially considering the record-breaking $1.3 billion global haul for Deadpool & Wolverine.
While Marvel Studios has yet to issue an official statement, it's being reported this evening that Reynolds will indeed suit up again for the 2026 film, though the size of his role remains under wraps. This confirmation will be a relief to fans who feared Wade Wilson might be sidelined in the MCU after his most successful solo outing yet.

Hardly 24 hours after Ryan Reynolds teased Deadpool’s future in the MCU, one recent sci-fi project from the star just got a massive streaming update. Reynolds stars alongside Rebecca Ferguson (Silo) and Jake Gyllenhaal (Brokeback Mountain) in Life, the 2017 sci-fi/body horror film following a team of scientists aboard a spaceship who become trapped with a Martian predator they must keep from getting to Earth. Life is currently not streaming anywhere in the United States, but Paramount+ has announced that the film will begin streaming on the platform at the start of next month, on September 1. The film grossed almost exactly $100 million at the box office against a $58 million budget, and it earned divisive scores of 67% from critics but 55% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
In addition to Reynolds, Ferguson, and Gyllenhaal, Life also stars Hiroyuki Sanada, who previously appeared in John Wick: Chapter 4 before winning an Emmy for his performance in Shōgun.

Ryan Reynolds may have just spoiled Deadpool’s MCU future with a cryptic social media post that has fans buzzing. Reynolds took to his social media late Monday night/early Tuesday morning and posted a picture of the Avengers logo on Instagram, which sent fans into a frenzy about his role in the upcoming Avengers movie, Doomsday. When the cast for Doomsday was announced earlier this year, Reynolds' name was among those missing from the call sheet, which came as a surprise considering the massive success of Deadpool & Wolverine. It’s unclear if Reynolds is trying to throw fans off the scent or just stir up some trouble, but after his third (and possibly final) Deadpool solo movie grossed over $1.3 billion globally, it would be surprising not to see him utilized somehow in the MCU going forward.

It’s been a quiet year for Ryan Reynolds so far after reprising his role as Wade Wilson in Deadpool & Wolverine, but one year after he played the Merc With a Mouth for the first time, he starred in a sci-fi horror film that’s become a hit on streaming charts. Reynolds stars alongside Rebecca Ferguson (Silo), Hiroyuki Sanada (Shōgun), and Jake Gyllenhaal (Presumed Innocent) in Life, the 2017 film following a team of scientists aboard the International Space Station who discover a rapidly evolving Martian predator that must be kept away from Earth. Despite releasing eight years ago, Life is still a hit on global VOD charts, trending in countries such as Nicaragua. The film earned scores of 67% from critics and 55% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it grossed almost exactly $100 million at the box office against a $58 million budget.

It was nearly Morbin' Time for Ari Aster. The acclaimed horror director, best known for his collaborations with the powerhouse art film studio A24, has revealed that he was asked by Sony Pictures to direct the 2022 superhero film Morbius, but declined. This is likely good news for Aster, considering that the film went on to become one of the most critically panned features of that year.
Aster revealed the news on Semafor's Mixed Signals podcast after being asked to weigh in on a rumor he had been offered to direct a Marvel film. "I was asked to do — is it Mobius? Morbius? Morbius," Aster replied after a bit of hesitation, wondering if he should divulge the news. "Yeah, we could have added it to my list," the director added.

Ari Aster has long held the mantle for the most disturbing mind in Hollywood since his arrival, and even he could not accept the comical absurdity of Morbius. Meanwhile, the director’s dark and twisted genius makes films like Midsommar and Hereditary so utterly unbearable, gruesome, and traumatic to watch that it almost pushes the viewers to the edge of a nervous breakdown.
Now, imagine the same being applied to one of Marvel’s darkest IPs, and it immediately sounds like the studio would have a surefire success in its hands.

Sony's Morbius movie could have been good. At least, that's what the Marvel fandom is now saying on social media after learning that filmmaker Ari Aster was approached to direct the Sony's Spider-Man Universe movie.
During a recent interview with the Mixed Signals podcast, Aster was asked to confirm or deny a rumor about him having been asked to direct a Marvel movie. The filmmaker confirmed that the rumor was true, saying, "Yes, once." After being nudged to reveal the movie, Aster shared that it was not Marvel Studios who wanted him, but Sony Pictures. "Well, I don’t know. I feel like I shouldn’t say. Should I? I was asked to do… Is it Mobius? Morbius? Morbius," he revealed. Ari Aster was approached to direct Morbius, the filmmaker reluctantly revealed in a recent interview Semafor.
Following the success of Hereditary and Midsommar, Aster met with Sony about turning the Marvel Comics character into a film — but it was decidedly not Morbin time, as Aster instead went on to make Beau Is Afraid.
Released in 2022, Morbius ended up being written by Matt Sazama & Burk Sharpless (“Lost in Space”) and directed by Daniel Espinosa (Life) with Jared Leto in the titular role.
Aster’s new film, Eddington, is in theaters today from A24.
Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal star in the contemporary western alongside Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, Amélie Hoeferle, Clifton Collins Jr., William Belleau, Austin Butler, and Emma Stone.
In May of 2020, a standoff between a small-town sheriff and mayor sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor in Eddington, New Mexico.

Once upon a time, not so long ago, Sony Pictures attempted to create a cinematic universe based on Spider-Man, without the web-slinger himself. It went as well as Marvel fans expected, with Morbiusquickly becoming one of the most infamous (and worst) superhero movies of all time. If it wasn't already clear that the studio has in over its head with the idea, they tried to hire one of the most unique filmmakers working today to helm the box office flop.
While on the Mixed Signals podcast, Eddington director Ari Aster revealed that Sony approached him years ago to helm Morbius, which starred Jared Leto. Aster kept things brief and didn't divulge any details, but it is safe to say that the conversations with Sony probably did not get very far. Despite featuring a Spider-Man character and some star talent, Morbius proved to be a disaster for the studio, one that...

Ari Aster as superhero director? Not in this lifetime. The auteur recently revealed during an appearance on the “Mixed Signals” podcast from Semafor Media (which you can see in the below video), that he was asked to direct 2022 Marvel/Sony film “Morbius” and declined.
“I was asked to do ‘Mobius.’ Or is it ‘Morbius’? Oh, God,” he said. “We could have added it to my list of [flops].” Aster has yet to direct a film he did not write, and it seems highly unlikely the auteur will ever dip into the superhero well.
When it was released in theaters in the spring of 2022, “Morbius” infamously flopped at the box office. The film received a slew of bad reviews, leading to director Daniel Espinosa defending the project to Insider while admitting that he had a “lot of self-hatred” about his own work. Espinosa also cited how “hard” it was to shoot the feature amid the pandemic delays.

“Hereditary” and “Eddington” director Ari Aster revealed in a new interview that he has been asked to direct one comic book movie in the past: 2022’s “Morbius.”
During a podcast interview with Semafor published Friday, the famously independent filmmaker was asked if the rumor was true that he had been approached at one point to direct a Marvel superhero movie. “Yes, once,” the writer-director confirmed. After some hesitation over whether or not he should reveal which one, Aster said, “I was asked to do — is it ‘Mobius’? ‘Morbius’?”
In response to Semafor media editor Max Tani’s remark that “Morbius” was a “huge flop” and that it would have been “awesome” if Aster had directed it, the “Eddington” filmmaker joked, “Yeah, we could have added it to my list.”
Aster did not, of course, end up directing “Morbius.” That film starred Jared Leto as its eponymous comic book anti-hero vampire.

Thunderbolts* Worldwide Box Office: Surpasses Jared Leto’s Morbius( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts*, which recently revealed its alternate title, The New Avengers, has surpassed three movies from Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, including Morbius, led by Jared Leto. The movie features Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, who has been highly appreciated, and people are drawn to it because of her. It will cross a major milestone worldwide this weekend but is slowly earning several feats at the box office. Keep scrolling for more.
Leto’s comic-book movie, based on the Marvel character of the same name, was released in 2022. It was directed by Daniel Espinosa. Jared starred in the titular role alongside Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson. The movie follows Morbius and his surrogate brother Milo, who become living vampires after curing themselves of a rare blood disease.

After overtaking the lifetime domestic haul of Jared Leto's horribly-received superhero film Morbius in its opening weekend of release alone, Marvel's Thunderbolts* has surpassed it globally as well. Thunderbolts* was released theatrically this past weekend, drawing a healthy $74 million in its domestic debut. This put the movie above Morbius' lifetime domestic haul. It has now also passed the poorly received Spider-Man spin-off at the global box office. Directed by Daniel Espinosa, Morbius debuted in 2022, and received poor reviews upon release. It became fodder for memes, and remains one of the most despised superhero films ever made.
The movie made $162 million worldwide, against a reported production budget of $80 million. Thunderbolts*reportedly cost over $100 million more, but, unlike Morbius, earned positive reviews from critics and audiences. The movie holds a "fresh" 88% Rotten Tomatoes score, as compared to Morbius' dismal 15%. The movie initiated the spiral for Sony's ambitious Spider-Man Universe,...

“Expect an update about it in the next couple of months,” says an Akira producer, reviving interest in a project long been considered dead.
Given just how poorly Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love And Thunder was received in 2022, it wasn’t particularly surprising when talk of Taika Waititi helming several big franchises seemed to stall. News on his planned Star Wars film went quiet, as did any further chatter regarding his adaptation of Akira, Katsuhiro Otomo’s beloved Japanese anime (and manga) that has long been considered unfilmable, despite a host of filmmakers at Warner Bros making attempts to get it up and running.
Jordan Peele was said to be involved at one point; Taika Waititi was definitely attached; Justin Lin, Daniel Espinosa, Stephen Norrington, David Sanberg, Ruairi Robinson, Jaume Collet-Serra and Albert Hughes are other directors who at one point or another have been involved in a project which...

"Life" may not have been a big hit when it landed in theaters in 2017, but several years later it's finding new life on Prime Video. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Ryan Reynolds, the sci-fi horror film has climbed to the top of the streaming charts, coming in at No. 4, and honestly, it deserves this second chance. Written by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, the cast of "Life" also includes Rebecca Ferguson, Emmy-winning "Shōgun" star Hiroyuki Sanada, Olga Dihovichnaya, and Ariyon Bakare. Alongside Gyllenhaal and Reynolds, they play astronauts on the International Space Station who make contact with an alien lifeform. Unfortunately, this little nibbler isn't the friendly kind and soon exterminates the crew one by one, leaving the survivors to do everything they can to prevent it from returning to Earth.
Our own Jacob Hall described "Life" as "an old-fashioned B-Movie dressed up like a blockbuster," with a great creature at the center of this feature.

Life was a little-seen and mostly forgotten 2017 sci-fi thriller that has now become a streaming hit on Prime Video, coming in at number four on the Amazon Prime Video top 10 chart. The movie starred Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds, and Rebecca Ferguson (Dune: Part One) as three of six astronauts aboard the International Space Station who discover life on Mars. Soon, the alien life form starts to quickly evolve, and the crew discover it wiped out life on Mars and could do the same on Earth. But one piece of amusing trivia is that fans thought it was a secret Venom prequel or spinoff; more on that in a moment.

10 Major Sony Spider-Man Universe Questions We May Never Get Answers For Now The Franchise Has Ended
Following the release of Kraven the Hunter, Sony's Spider-Man Universe as we know it is coming to an end, which leaves many questions unanswered and loose ends unexplored. Originally planned to be connected to Marc Webb's The Amazing Spider-Man duology, the Ssu became its own entity with the release of 2018's Venom. Despite its name, Sony's Marvel movie franchise featured some of Spider-Man's greatest villains from Marvel Comics, but not the wall-crawler himself, who was instead introduced to the MCU, but this may have contributed to the franchise's downfall.

Jared Leto weight transformation, health struggles, extreme commitment, method acting, Hollywood actor ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Jared Leto didn’t just act in Chapter 27—he morphed into Mark David Chapman, the man who shot John Lennon, by gaining 67 pounds in what could only be described as a health nightmare. That’s not transformation; it’s borderline body horror. Leto didn’t sugarcoat it, saying it’s “a tough, bad thing to do to your health.” And for what? Art? Commitment? Madness? You decide.
But wait, Leto didn’t stop at gaining weight. For Dallas Buyers Club (2013), he shed about 30 pounds to play Rayon, a frail, drug-addicted hustler. He practically disappeared on screen, skin, and bones to bring Rayon’s vulnerability to life. It was a grim, committed commitment. Jared Leto isn’t just committed; he’s dangerously committed.

In the aftermath of the shocking success of "Venom" in 2018, Sony realized that the "Spider-Man" franchise could be even more fruitful than it had been. The multi-billion-dollar Marvel Comics property is, much like "Batman," an expansive world with hundreds, if not thousands of characters. And we're not even talking about the likes of The Avengers. Even limited to characters connected directly to Spidey, there is much to mine. In 2022, Sony tested the limits of that with "Morbius." What resulted was a meme-worthy superhero flop that is remembered best for "it's Morbin' time" jokes.
Against a $75 million budget, the delayed, troubled "Morbius" earned just $167.4 million worldwide, ranking as one of the biggest flops of 2022. It was also trashed by critics and caused Sony to hit the pause button on many similar planned spin-offs centered on secondary "Spider-Man" characters, such as Black Cat,...

Michel, the archetypal mastermind, represents the enduring draw of their criminal past.
The eight-episode series, crafted by Ronnie Sandahl and Daniel Espinosa, methodically deconstructs the planning and execution of an unprecedented robbery. More than just a crime thriller, it’s a complex examination of survival, friendship, and the razor-thin line between respectable ambition and criminal desperation.

Several actors join the MCU to experience the thrill of being in a comic book film or to show they can do feature-length projects outside their comfort zone. In the case of one Morbius actor, his reason for joining the Spider-Man Universe was far less sentimental.
Speaking with iNews, Morbius star Jared Harris divulged why he accepted a role in the 2022 Marvel film alongside Jared Leto, Adria Arjona, Matt Smith and Tyrese Gibson. According to a straightforward Harris, he had bills to pay and Morbius helped him do that. Sure, yeah. I have got a mortgage to pay, you know. Sometimes you say yes to things because you need to make money, he said.

Jarred Harris is sharing an honest perspective on his Marvel debut.
The Golden Globe nominee explained that he keeps a “sense of humour” about his role in Sony‘s Morbius (2022), chalking up his appearance in the maligned Spider-Verse spin-off to a paycheck during a recent interview.
“I have got a mortgage to pay, you know,” he told British outlet i News. “Sometimes you say yes to things because you need to make money.”
Harris explained, “I have observed that those types of films do well if you have a sense of humour. You can’t treat it as though it’s Shakespeare. So yeah, that movie could have done with a more mischievous sense of humour.”
The actor appeared in Morbius as Dr. Emil Nicholas, a mentor and father figure to Dr. Michael Morbius (Jared Leto), who runs a facility for people with incurable illnesses.

Jared Harris’ esteemed acting career includes Emmy-nominated performances in “Mad Men” and “The Crown,” plus roles in movies such as David Fincher’s “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” all of which makes his supporting role in Jared Leto’s infamous comic book flop “Morbius” such a strange outlier. One new theory suggests Venom: The Last Dance could bring Sony's Spider-Man Universe to an end, but not before Eddie Brock's Venom joins the MCU proper. The final trailer for Venom: The Last Dance has revealed that Knull will be introduced in the upcoming movie, posing the most significant threat yet to Eddie Brock and Venom. Knull is a formidable villain in Marvel Comics, and his live-action debut has raised worries that Venom might not survive his latest adventure, but not all hope is lost, according to a wild new theory.
It was previously revealed that Venom: The Last Dance would be Tom Hardy's final solo movie as Eddie Brock, but it's unclear whether the character, or simply just Venom, will continue on in some capacity. There are hopes that this won't be the end of Venom in live-action, though many would prefer the beloved character to...

Given Sony Pictures' track record with its Marvel movies, no one had particularly high hopes for Morbius before it was released in 2022. Still, the potential for the Living Vampire to take centre stage in a fun, horror-tinged adventure was definitely there.
Unfortunately, the version we got was a disaster. Boasting one of the worst post-credits scenes ever put on film, Morbius was a mess of a movie which stars Matt Smith, Tyrese, and Al Madrigal have all suggested wasn't the project they signed up for (the entire final act was reworked with extensive reshoots).
Now, Mad Men star Jared Harris has weighed in; the actor didn't have the most memorable role as Dr. Emil Nicholas, Michael Morbius' father figure, though it's possible he had more to do before additional photography took place.

David's sacrifice in the Life movie ending fails, leading to a shocking twist for Miranda and a bleak, eerie conclusion. Director Daniel Espinosa drew inspiration from noir films for the dark Life ending, creating a memorable and impactful finale. While Life's ending may not have saved the film from middling reviews, it remains a highlight for fans of the sci-fi horror movie.
The Life movie ending took audiences by surprise in 2017, offering a bleak and haunting conclusion to director Daniel Espinosa's sci-fi horror. While Life was not a box office or critical hit, it managed to impress many fans with its take on the contained killer alien story that draws a lot of inspiration from Ridley Scott's Alien. However, the aspect of the movie that seems to get the most attention is the unforgettable ending that is worth examining further.

“To make a movie through committee, I think, is very hard,” Daniel Espinosa said of his 2022 superhero flick.
In the world of viral movie marketing, Morbius is a fascinating case study for all the wrong reasons. Initially released to a critical hammering in 2022, the film denied a decent opening to gross a fairly lackluster (for a superhero film) $165m at the global box office.
After viral memes began (ironically) singing the film’s praises, Sony attempted to ride the internet wave and put it back into cinemas the following year. As a result, Morbius holds the unhappy accolade of being one of the few films to flop at the box office twice, making just $280,000 on its second opening.
All that, we imagine, can’t have been easy on director Daniel Espinosa, especially when a lot of the film’s flaws seemed to be out of his control.

Morbius director Daniel Espinosa has opened up about his 2022 critical and box office flop and revealed that he believes he was not a good fit to direct the movie. Espinosa is best known for crime thrillers like Easy Money, Safe House, and Child 44. His 2017 film Life generated a great deal of buzz because Sony Pictures produced it, and many thought it was going to be a stealth prequel to Venom. While that did not turn out to be the case, Espinosa was hired to direct Morbius in June 2018 in what would eventually become a four-year project, since Morbius was delayed from 2020 to 2022 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Since the release of Morbius, Espinosa has moved on, and is back to his roots with the thrillers Madame Luna and The Helicopter Heist. Speaking with Deadline, Espinosa talked about his struggle making Morbius, a film that notably went through various behind-the-scenes changes.

Veteran film festival chief Marco Müller took over the reins of Taormina in April, giving him a short window to pull together the ongoing 70th edition. After a week that has included the world premiere of Saint Clare starring Bella Thorne, the Italian premiere of Warner Bros/Universal’s Twisters and Baltasar Kormakur’s Touch from Focus, as well as a high-profile visit from Sharon Stone, he still appears to be on the fence about returning next year.
“The festival harvest is like the weather, so sometimes you just have to shake the tree and the beautiful fruits come into your hands,” Müller told Deadline. “This year, with the strike in Hollywood and the fact that I signed my contract around April 12, the fact that both Warner Bros and Universal went for Taormina for me is a good starting point for the future — if ever I would have a future here.

Morbius director Daniel Espinosa is more than aware of the reception to his Marvel film, starring Jared Leto as the Living Vampire. He says the project turned out poorly due to Hollywood red tape, Covid-19, and too many cooks in the kitchen. Studios love a trendy needle drop in their trailers. The 2010s were especially fraught with movie previews set to Imagine Dragons tunes, which might have been single-handedly responsible for the band being unduly maligned and declared "the new Nickelback" by musicophiles. Madame Web makes the question of who the Sony live-action Spider-Man is even more complicated. Tyrese Gibson is eagerly awaiting a potential sequel to Morbius, expressing interest in reprising his role as Agent Simon Stroud. Gibson's character was supposed to have a powerful weaponized arm in the film, but most of his scenes showcasing this ability were cut. Despite negative critical reception and box office performance, the actor had an enjoyable time working on Morbius and has scenes he hopes might make it to a sequel.
It may not be in the cards for a sequel to Morbius to happen anytime soon given the film's negative critical reception and so-so box office, but actor Tyrese Gibson, who co-starred in the first movie, is ready to come back for some 'Morbin Time.' Whatever the response may have been to the first installment, Gibson appears to have had a great time working on the movie, although he does express some disappointment over some of his deleted scenes.

Although it may have fared enough to make up for any losses, Morbius is still unarguably one of the most critically panned movies of all time from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Despite holding hot talents like Michael Keaton, Tyrese Gibson, and Jared Leto, the film still underperformed among viewers because of things ranging from its storyline to the character arcs to not delivering perfectly.
Morbius (2022).
That being said, one of the major reasons why the film failed to serve its audience’s expectations was because it cut off some of those brutal scenes that could have garnered a lot of fan support. Sony’s Spider-Man Universe At Worldwide Box Office: From Venom To Madame Web! ( Photo Credit – IMDb )
With Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web out in the theatres, another movie has been added to Sony’s Spider-Man universe. We have seen other films in that universe, including Tom Hardy-led Venom. However, the films comparatively earn less at the box office than the MCU movies, but remind you, we are not talking about Tom Holland’s Spider-Man films.
The Spider-Man movies have been under Sony for a long time until Tom Holland played the role; it merged with the MCU, and thanks to that, the fans witnessed Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom’s versions of Peter Parker in 2021’s No Way Home. In the end credits, we saw Tom Hardy’s characters, Eddie Brock and Venom.

A filmmaker with an affinity for the dark, Daniel Espinosa caught international attention with 2010 Swedish thriller “Easy Money.” Hollywood was immediately and understandably intrigued by his capacity to make us care about shady criminal types, and for his part, the Chilean-born, Sweden-based director couldn’t resist the lure of making an American studio movie. Or three. Alas, each paycheck took Espinosa farther from his core strength: finding the humanity in morally compromised characters. Now, in a hard swing from ill-advised snabba cash project “Morbius” in 2022, “Madame Luna” can be seen either as penance or simply a return to form. Either way, this tense, tragic contemporary immigrant drama makes infinitely better use of his instincts.
Where Espinosa’s past four credits allowed him to work with an enviable roster of English-speaking stars — Denzel Washington, Tom Hardy, Jake Gyllenhaal and Jared Leto — this smaller, more sociological character study gives him a chance...
