One Of The Best Basketball TV Shows Is An Underrated Gem On Apple TV+
Image
Netflix may have won the streaming wars, but that doesn't mean other platforms didn't emerge as worthy contenders. Case in point: Apple TV+.

From having the best spy show on streaming to being the home to a cultural phenomenon like "Severance," Apple TV+ is all about hitting homeruns. For sports fans, the streaming service can even scratch that competitive itch with slam dunks like "Ted Lasso" and "Swagger," the latter of which is an incredible basketball drama starring O'Shea Jackson Jr. and Isaiah Hill.

Full discloser: "Swagger" was canceled in 2023 after two seasons. Still, the show is more than a fun watch and boasts strong reviews from critics and viewers alike. Loosely inspired by Kevin Durant's upbringing (the NBA legend also served as an executive producer on the series), "Swagger" is full of high-octane basketball and emotional off-the-court drama that goes hard with the cheesiness. (It's a high school...

‘Swagger’ Canceled After Two Seasons on Apple TV+
Image
Apple TV+ has canceled its drama series Swagger after two seasons.

The series about a high school basketball star (played by Isaiah Hill) and his journey through the world of youth hoops is loosely inspired by the life of NBA star Kevin Durant, who’s an executive producer. The cancellation comes a few months after season two’s final episode streamed in August.

Series creator, showrunner and director Reggie Rock Bythewood shared the news of Swagger’s end on Instagram. “What an amazing adventure. In our two seasons, we have launched careers, disrupted genre, brought forth humanity through our characters, told stories we care deeply about, revolutionized the way to shoot basketball and had fun. That’s a blessing,” he wrote.

After thanking fellow executive producers Durant, Brian Grazer and Rich Kleiman and producers Imagine Television and CBS Studios, Bythewood added, “Apple, while you are not ordering a season three,...

Is Swagger Based On A True Story? Real Inspirations Behind Apple's Basketball Show
Image
Apple TV+'s Swagger premiered in 2021 and revolves around an elite youth basketball club and, in particular, shines a light on Jace Carson, played by Isaiah Hill. The sports drama television series dives deep into the basketball world, the relationships between teammates, players, and coaches, and how the outside world can sometimes influence what happens on the court. Following a slew of positive reviews, the streaming service renewed the show for a second season in June 2022.

Swagger season 2 premiered a year later and is set to conclude in August 2023 after an eight-episode run. The series continues to explore the development of Jace's basketball career and the struggles of making it to the professional level despite his obvious talent. Of course, the Apple TV+ series also focuses on the other characters, but fans know that the real star is Jace. However, like many other sports shows and movies, some wonder if...

Swagger Season 3: Is It Happening? Cast, Story Details & Everything We Know
Image
The Apple TV Plus original sports drama series Swagger impressed audiences during its first two seasons, but details of season 3 are slow to arrive. Debuting in 2021, the show follows an ensemble of characters who are swept up into the political world of youth basketball as they all vie for a future on the sport's grandest stage, the NBA. Swagger is loosely based on the real-life story of NBA player Kevin Durant, who also serves as an executive producer, and this gives the series a more realistic tone. Unlike other sports series, Swagger paints a clearer picture of what the life of an aspiring professional athlete is actually like.

Immediately met with glowing reviews, many critics praised Swagger's messaging and confidence which helped elevate it above the usual sports fare (via Rotten Tomatoes). Joining a long list of well-received original series on Apple TV Plus, Swagger is seen as Ted...

Season 2 trailer slams in for ‘Swagger’
Swagger (2021)
Apple TV+ has unveiled the season 2 trailer for ‘Swagger,’ the acclaimed and emotional sports drama helmed by creator, showrunner and director Reggie Rock Bythewood.

Inspired by NBA superstar Kevin Durant’s experiences, the series explores the world of youth basketball, and the players, their families and coaches who walk the fine line between dreams and ambition, and opportunism and corruption. Off the court, the show reveals what it’s like to grow up in America.

In season two, we meet the man-children Jace, Phil, Nick, Musa, Drew and Royale as they are entering their senior year of high school. All but Phil will be attending Cedar Cove Prep; a predominantly White institution where wealthy board members control the entire operation from the hiring of faculty to the enrollment of students.

It is a school of power and influence. For all of their academic success, their basketball program has not been competitive until Emory Lawson,...

‘Swagger’ Creator Explains Season 2’s Time Jump To See Young Cast “Navigate Their Way Through Adulthood”
Image
The second season of Swagger will debut on Apple TV+ in June. The streamer announced the news Wednesday, along with a few first look images of the cast.

The images don’t give much away, showing a few moments with star Isaiah Hill’s character Jace Carson. One appears to be on the court after a game with O’Shea Jackson Jr.’s Ike, a former star player-turned-youth basketball coach. Another image appears to be a more tender interaction between Jace and Quvenzhané Wallis’ Crystal.

Season 2 comes just under two years after the premiere of the first installment, which prompted a bit of a time jump to accommodate the aging of the younger cast, as well usher in a more compelling storyline, creator, showrunner and director Reggie Rock Bythewood said during Apple TV+’s Television Critics Association panel.

Reggie Rock Bythewood (‘Swagger’ director): We ‘ask the question of how we treat kids in America’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Image
“When I sat there and I spoke with him, I started to see a narrative that wasn’t truly about basketball, it was about growing up in America,” explains director Reggie Rock Bythewood, recalling his initial meeting with NBA star Kevin Durant. Bythewood directs the Apple TV+ drama “Swagger,” which is based on the prominent sports figure’s life and youth basketball experience. We talked to him as part of our “Meet the Experts” TV directors panel. Watch our exclusive video interview above.

“They weren’t looking for a biopic,” he reveals. “It was just using inspiration from K.D.’s life and then I was able to bring in points of inspiration from things I’ve seen with my kids and personal experiences.” Even though the series focuses on the lives of basketball players more than the sport itself, Bythewood wanted it to feel authentic, beginning with lead actor Isaiah Hill.

‘Swagger’ Review: Apple Drama Grows Up Along with the Young Basketball Star at Its Center
Image
Much like its main rising basketball phenom, “Swagger” has all the skills it needs. At the outset of the new Apple TV+ drama, we’re introduced to Jace Carson (Isaiah Hill), a touted 14-year-old Maryland prep prospect who can show off his ball-handling skills and a cradle dunk all in a single take without the disguise of camera trickery. Soon, he gets a coach in former phenom Ike Edwards And Jace has a fiercely devoted mother in Jenna (Shinelle Azoroh), who considering this show is based on the early experiences of Kevin Durant is destined for her own special recognition at some point in the future.

It doesn’t happen right away, but the longer the series’ opening season goes, the more it figures out how to utilize all the tools at its disposal. “Swagger” is so concerned with setting up Jace’s stakes from the get-go that the early...
