A brand new animated adventure has arrived in the form of “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank,” but this one may feel familiar to fans of classic comedies. The new release takes heavy inspiration from the plot of the Mel Brooks film “Blazing Saddles,” to the point that Brooks and Richard Pryor even have screenplay credits. But don’t worry, this one’s safe for all-ages. Rob Minkoff (“Stuart Little”), Mark Koetsier and Chris Bailey, and the film boasts an impressive voice cast.

“Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank” was released exclusively in theaters, so the only way to see it right now is to go to a movie theater.

“Crawdads” opens new this week against Paramount’s animated family film “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank,” which also had previews on Thursday starting at 3 p.m. It made 505,000 from 2,650 locations; it’s scheduled to open on approximately 3,400 screens this weekend. Both films are expected to fall behind “Thor: Love and Thunder” as it moves into its second weekend.

Pic’s first Tuesday, thanks to summer traffic mid-week, is ahead of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness by 8 which did 12.6M.

The amusing “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank” capably makes the case that more animated kids’ movies should be based on classic comedies.

Formerly titled “Blazing Samurai,” “Paws of Fury: The Legend of Hank,” written by Ed Stone and Nate Hopper, directed by Rob Minkoff (“The Lion King”), Mark Koetsier, and Chris Bailey, borrows a title structure from the Bruce Lee movie “Fist of Fury” and riffs on the classic Mel Brooks Western comedy “Blazing Saddles” (Brooks also offers a delightful vocal performance).

It’s a breezy, funny, highly self-referential flick steeped in movie history.
