Every DC Character Cameo In James Gunn's Superman, Explained
Image
"Superman" might be the first big-screen outing for James Gunn's DC Universe, but thanks to some supporting supers, it's already a thriving one. We always knew that the likes of Nathan Fillion, Edi Gathegi, and Isabela Merced were taking to the skies as Guy Gardner (a Green Lantern), Mr. Terrific, and Hawkgirl, respectively, but what might come as a surprise are the other notable DC characters that cross the flight path of David Corenswet's new take on the Man of Steel.

Aiding in making what feels like the most comic book movie ever made, characters flit in and out of Supes' new story, some of whom only have a few words to say on the matter of an alien being assigning himself as Earth's latest problem solver. But the fact that these characters only have a limited amount of screen time is an asset, because it makes the...

James Gunn's Entire DC Universe Timeline Explained
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Spoilers for "Superman" to follow.

"Superman" is here and, Highfather willing, it's the beginning of a new DC Universe on film. James Gunn isn't just the movie's director, he's co-president of the new DC Studios with Peter Safran and is charged with assembling a DC Universe on film and television. The fate of "Superman" will determine the future of that Dcu and possibly parent studio Warner Bros'.

But there's messiness, because Warner Bros already spent a decade trying to make a cinematic universe out of the DC Comics world. That effort was called the DC Extended Universe. Gunn was involved back when the Dceu was still ongoing; he wrote-directed "The Suicide Squad" and created its TV spin-off, "Peacemaker."

Gunn has pretty consistently maintained that the Dcu is a fresh start, but it's not a clean break either. In a 2023 post on Threads,...

'Superman' Star, 54, Teases His Character's Return in 'Peacemaker' Season 2 and 'Lanterns'
Image
Nathan Fillion has been playing John Nolan on The Rookie for almost 10 years now, but he’s also heavily involved in James Gunn’s Dcu. Fillion, who worked with Gunn on the Guardians of the Galaxy movies, has been tapped for the role of Guy Gardner in the Dcu. He’ll make his first appearance in Superman this week before also starring in Peacemaker Season 2 and, later, Lanterns.

Fillion recently caught up with Deadline on the red carpet at an event for Superman, and he was asked what he could tease about the Dcu’s wider universe, instead of just one specific project. To no surprise, Fillion wasn’t able to completely spill the beans, but he did praise the work of James Gunn and also spoke on how the projects are all connected, which helps it feel like one big universe:

"It's a continuous universe from end to end.

Liam Neeson’s $50 Million Action Flop He Called a “Mythic Western” Is a Sleeper Hit on Streaming
Image
Liam Neeson will always be known for his roles in classic action movies like The Grey, The A-Team, and Taken. However, 10 years ago, he starred in an action vehicle that has become a surprising hit on a new free streaming service. Neeson stars alongside Ed Harris (Top Gun: Maverick) and Vincent D’Onofrio (Daredevil: Born Again) in Run All Night, the crime thriller following Jimmy Colon (Neeson), a hitman who has one night to figure out where his loyalties lie. Run All Night is currently streaming for free on Tubi, and it’s one of the most popular movies on the platform, sitting at #10 at the time of writing. The film earned “rotten” scores of 59% from critics and 56% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it also grossed only $71 million at the box office against a $50 million budget, falling well short of its break-even point.

During a 2014 interview with IndieLondon to discuss the movie Non-Stop,...

Thunderbolts vs The Suicide Squad: Who would win in a showdown?
Wyatt Russell, David Harbour, Olga Kurylenko, Sebastian Stan, Hannah John-Kamen, Lewis Pullman, and Florence Pugh in Thunderbolts* (2025)
Do you remember when you were a kid and argued on the playground that your dad was better and stronger than another kid's dad? Of course, nowadays, these juvenile bouts of whose dad is stronger likely happen across social media or a multiplayer video game. This innate desire to be the best and to be on the best team is a common reference point we humans tend to revisit from childhood into adulthood.

Given the MCU recent theatrical release of the Thunderbolts*, I had that urge again to compare who (i.e. which team) is better and stronger: The Thunderbolts or The Sucicide Squad?

The members of Thunderbolts are comprised of a kaleidoscope of quasi-criminals and anti-heroes who were coerced in as much as they were manipulated (by a morally compromised S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent – Valentina Allegra de Fontaine) to work together for a common clandestine goal.

James Gunn Clarifies Why Character Deaths in the Dcu Will Not Be Reversed
Image
James Gunn set a bold and exciting precedent for the new DC Universe (Dcu) even before he was appointed as the Co-Chairman of DC Studios alongside his producing partner Peter Safran. The opening scene of his 2021 film The Suicide Squad massacred several villains who were part of Task Force X, including even the fan-favorite Captain Boomerang, played by Jai Courtney. The opening scene made it feel as though no one was safe, and the same principle would carry over into projects like Peacemaker and Creature Commandos. Now, the writer/director took to social media to explain how he wants the death of characters to work in the new Dcu.

A fan asked the director if the Creature Commandos character, Princess Ilana Rostovic of Pokolistan (Maria Bakalova) would be making a return of some kind. In the season 1 finale of the series, Ilana is shot in the head by The Bride...

Why Netflix Canceled Altered Carbon
Image
There has always been more to cyberpunk than the core premise of being more than human. It might also be tempting to boil down the genre to mere aesthetics: futuristic, neon-drenched metropolises, cutting-edge technology, and a society simultaneously on the brink of progress and ruin. However, cyberpunk narratives routinely critique the oversaturation of capitalist ideology while highlighting mankind's fraught relationship with technological progress. These stories are also overtly political, where shadowy organizations and corrupt megacorporations hold a corrosive monopoly over people's lives, going as far as digitizing consciousness in the name of progress.

Although all of these genre traits find a way to compound in Richard K. Morgan's 2002 novel "Altered Carbon," humanity emerges as the most intriguing aspect of such a dystopian world. Just when you think you've seen it all before, "Altered Carbon" jolts you awake with the ingenuity and cynicism necessary for cyberpunk to thrive as a genre.

18 A-Listers Saw Through Guy Ritchie’s Supposed Classic Before It Tanked at the Box Office
Image
Guy Ritchie is known for his stylistic storytelling, and the way he mixes up gritty action with slick dialogue and suave antiheroes is truly commendable. But even professionals of his caliber can misfire at times because back in 2015, Ritchie attempted to bring back a beloved ‘60s spy franchise.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. had a Cold War setting, sleek suits, and international espionage, which made it seem like a box office hit on paper. But despite looking polished and having charismatic leads, the movie failed to impress, and it wasn’t just the public, but a string of actors who dodged the project even before it began production.

And he hasn’t looked back. Since then, he regularly hears from other queer – and often closeted – athletes. “They don’t know what to do, how to navigate and obviously coming out in certain places...

Suicide Squad Star Teases Possible Return In James Gunn's Dcu
Image
Almost four years after his character was killed off onscreen, Jai Courtney addressed the possibility of reprising his role as Captain Boomerang in James Gunn's Dcu. The actor originated this role in 2016's Suicide Squad, alongside a star-studded cast of Margot Robbie, Will Smith, Joel Kinnaman, Scott Eastwoord, Cara Delevingne, and Viola Davis. Courtney was one of the few actors to return for its 2021 sequel, The Suicide Squad, which was directed by Gunn. Kinnaman, Robbie, and Davis all also reprised their parts. In a wild plot twist, Captain Boomerang was killed off as part of the film's opening bloodbath.

According to Comic Book Resources, Courtney was initially upset to learn that his character would die so early on in The Suicide Squad. However, Gunn reassured the star that Captain Boomerang may return to the big screen one day. The actor explained:

"I was like, 'Come on, man. Boomerang is cool.

James Gunn Told This Dceu Veteran There's Hope For a Return (Even Though They Died on Screen 4 Years Ago)

James Gunn told one of the Dceu veteran actors that there's hope his character could return in the future, even though they died on-screen. The actor was Jai Courtney, who played Captain Boomerang in The Suicide Squad.

Speaking with Variety, Courtney spoke about his conversation with Gunn about the fate of Captain Boomerang, and how Gunn made it clear there's still a way for the character to return. "I was like, 'Come on, man. Boomerang is cool,'" Courtney said to Gunn after reading the script for the 2021 movie The Suicide Squad and seeing that his character died.

"James is like, 'You know these rules don't really apply. Just because he dies here doesn’t mean it’s gone forever, right?' And I was like, 'Hell yeah.' So I have hope. Somewhere in the back of my mind, there’s a prayer that we’ll see more of Boomerang one day.

Since making his feature film debut in Ridley Scott's "Black Hawk Down" in 2001, he has appeared in films that run the gamut of genre and scale: from smaller character-driven dramas like "Warrior" and "Locke" to some of the most ambitious blockbusters of the 2010s including "Inception" and "Mad Max: Fury Road." Hardy's resume showcases his talents as a performer who boasts leading man looks and sensibilities, but at his core is an eager character actor pursuing a wide variety of roles.

Like many of his contemporaries, Tom Hardy has brought his talents to superhero cinema. With his dynamite work as Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises" and the bonkers, off-the-wall zaniness he exhibited as the star of the "Venom" trilogy, Hardy is in that special group of actors who have appeared in films based on both DC and Marvel Comics.

‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 trailer: Everything to know about James Gunn’s Emmy-nominated series
Image
So much peace is coming this way.

On Friday, Max debuted the first trailer for Season 2 of Peacemaker, the Emmy Award-nominated series from DC Studios boss and Superman filmmaker James Gunn. (The show was nominated for best stunts in 2022.)

Season 2 picks up with the titular Peacemaker aka Christopher “Chris” Smith (John Cena), as “he struggles to reconcile his past with his newfound sense of purpose while continuing to kick righteous evil-doer butt in his misguided quest for peace at any cost.”

Peacemaker will premiere on Aug. 21, making it eligible for 2026 Emmy consideration. Here is everything you need to know about the show and the new trailer.

Who stars in Season 2 of Peacemaker?

In addition to Cena, Season 2 brings back Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, Steve Agee, and Robert Patrick from the first season. New cast members include Frank Grillo, David Denman, Sol Rodriguez, and Tim Meadows.

Peacemaker Season 2 First Trailer Features Maxwell Lord, Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, And More Of The New Dcu
Image
James Gunn has shared the first trailer for Peacemaker season 2, and it opens with John Cena's former Task Force X member attempting to join the ranks of Maxwell Lord's superhero team (believed to be called the "Justice Gang" based on Superman toy leaks).

Lord is flanked by Green Lantern Guy Gardner and Hawkgirl, neither of whom seems particularly impressed by Peacemaker. We also learn more about Rick Flag Sr.'s plans for the man who murdered his son in The Suicide Squad, though this doesn't look like a typical revenge mission.

There's also a huge surprise at the end of the trailer as we see a second Peacemaker! It seems there will be a Multiversal component to the series, perhaps meaning the Dceu's Christopher Smith travels to the Dcu.

According to a newly released synopsis for Peacemaker season 2, "The new season follows Christopher 'Chris' Smith, aka Peacemaker, the vigilante...

Christopher Smith at an event for Severance (2006)
Believe it or not, saving the day is often a thankless job. We want to think that bags of cash, a ticker-tape parade, and a key to the city that isn’t chocolate underneath the surface follow in the wake of superheroics. However, more often than not, it’s business as usual with your acts of derring-do as a footnote in someone else’s story. Unfortunately for Christopher Smith and his rag-tag team, they’re about to find out just how hard it is to get the credit they deserve in today’s teaser trailer for Peacemaker Season 2!

Does anyone else feel they’ve aged 1000 years since Peacemaker‘s Season 1 debut in January 2022? After months of teasing the show’s return, our first look at Peacemaker and the 11th Street Kids is finally here, and it’s a hell of a ride. In the Peacemaker Season 2 teaser trailer, Chris blows...

‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 Trailer: John Cena Returns in James Gunn’s New DC Universe With Cameos From Guy Gardner and Hawkgirl
Image
Team Peacemaker is finally back.

John Cena’s very R-rated DC superhero has returned in the first trailer for “Peacemaker” Season 2, created by DC Studios co-chief James Gunn. The sophomore season takes place in the rebooted DC Universe, which officially kicked off with Gunn’s animated series “Creature Commando” and continues with his summer tentpole “Superman.” Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner and Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl cameo in the trailer and will appear in “Superman.”

The first “Peacemaker” season released in 2022 on Max (back when it was called HBO Max) and was a spinoff of Gunn’s 2021 “The Suicide Squad” movie. It stars Cena’s patriotic mercenary Christopher Smith, who debuted as Peacemaker in “The Suicide Squad,” as he starts working for the mysterious company A.R.G.U.S., the Advanced Research Group Uniting Super-Humans. In Season 1, he investigates Project Butterfly and is tasked to kill off parasitic aliens that have taken over...

3 Essential ‘Peacemaker’ Episodes to Watch While You Wait for Season 2
Image
Before James Gunn became the co-chief of DC Studios, he laid the foundations of the DC Universe with 2021’s The Suicide Squad and then Peacemaker. John Cena plays Christopher Smith/Peacemaker in both, getting back into the role for the show as well after the events of Operation Starfish. Peacemaker was well-received upon release and even got a renewal before the Dceu imploded and became the Dcu.

Among the reboots, though, Gunn seems to have saved his beloved TV series, and fans are all the more excited for it. The filmmaker mentioned that though some characters from the show will survive the reboot and will carry over to the Dcu, Season 1 will not be canon to the new continuity. No one knows how that will work yet, but James Gunn assured that there was a way.

James Gunn’s Dcu started with Creature Commandos late last year, which included some characters from Peacemaker.

There's No "I" In "Peace" On First Poster For Peacemaker Season 2; First Trailer Arrives Tomorrow
Image
The first poster for Peacemaker season 2 has been released, with the trailer now confirmed for tomorrow. Some of you may be disappointed that this is getting a push before Superman's first full trailer lands, but the Man of Steel did recently get a 5-minute sneak peek and featurette.

This latest sneak peek, which follows yesterday's TV spot, doesn't reveal much, but puts the spotlight on the title character and Eagly. It's also accompanied by the tagline, "There is no I in Peace."

Plot details for season 2 are being kept a closely guarded secret, though there are rumblings that, among the changes made when we follow Smith into a new reality, will be the fact that his father and brother are alive again. Frank Grillo's Rick Flag Sr. will also be out for revenge after learning of Peacemaker's role in his son's death.

Peacemaker spun out of the events of The Suicide Squad,...

Peacemaker Season 2 TV Spot Sees Rick Flag Sr. On The Hunt For His Son's Killer
Image
During Inside the NBA on TNT yesterday evening, a new TV spot for Peacemaker season 2 aired. Offering our best look yet at the Dcu TV series, we see the show's leads forced to resign themselves to the fact they're not considered heroes, despite saving the world.

It appears that Peacemaker and company will return to White Dragon's lair, though they seem to be on the run from someone.

Rick Flag Sr., perhaps? This preview confirms he's on the hunt for Christopher Smith and eager to avenge what happened to his son in The Suicide Squad.

James Gunn has previously revealed that Flag takes over A.R.G.U.S. from Amanda Waller (we're guessing that was meant to be explained in the Waller TV series that's stalled), leading to him learning the truth about what happened in Corto Maltese. We'll catch up with the Creature Commandos lead in Superman this summer.

Brilliant Detail in ‘For All Mankind’ Shows Humanity Can Do Wonders if America Achieves Gender Equity
Image
Created by Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert, and Ben Nedivi, Apple TV+’s science fiction drama series For All Mankind has received critical acclaim for its concept. The show dramatizes an alternate version of the Space Race between the United States and the Soviet Union, and each episode introduces an exciting alternate history to explore.

For All Mankind is reportedly taken from the plaque that the astronauts placed on the moon where Neil Armstrong took his first steps. It read, ‘Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the moon, July 1969 A.D. We came in peace for all mankind.’ One detail from the show goes on to depict that the world would be a better place if America achieved gender equity.

James Gunn Shares New Look At Peacemaker Season 2 After Celebrating John Cena's Historic WWE Title Win
Image
At WrestleMania in Las Vegas this past weekend, John Cena defeated Cody Rhodes (with an assist from rapper Travis Scott) to win a record 17th WWE Championship.

The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker director James Gunn was among those who congratulated Cena after his big win. Today, the filmmaker has celebrated his friend and frequent collaborator's 48th birthday with a new photo from the Peacemaker season 2 set.

Those of you who have pointed out that the DC Studios co-ceo has appeared in a lot of Superman promotional material likely won't be surprised to see that Gunn is also front and centre. Coincidence or part of an overall marketing strategy? It's hard to say.

Either way, this is probably our best look yet at Peacemaker's costume and helmet in the Dcu and, well, he really doesn't look all that different from when we last saw him cause chaos in the Dceu.
