Sara Bareilles’ ‘Little Voice’ Becomes First Show Canceled by Apple TV+
Sara Bareilles
The Sara Bareilles-produced dramedy “Little Voice” has been canceled by Apple TV+, marking the first original series to get the ax at the tech giant’s streaming service.

Described as a “love letter to the diverse musicality of New York,” “Little Voice” explores “the universal journey of finding your authentic voice in your early 20s.” Along with producing “Little Voice,” Bareilles (“Waitress”) provided original music for the series.

“Little Voice” is a half-hour, coming-of-age drama that stars Brittany O’Grady (“Star”) as a talented young singer and songwriter looking to find her confidence on stage and fulfill her dreams while navigating love, rejection and complicated family issues.

“Little Voice” was Bareilles’ first foray into television (she now stars on Peacock’s recently renewed Tina Fey-created comedy “Girls5Eva”) and marked O’Grady’s return to TV after breaking out in “Star.”

Along with O’Grady, “Little Voice” boasted an ensemble cast that includes Sean Teale,...

Little Voice Silenced: Apple TV+ Cancels Dramedy After One Season!
Brittany O'Grady
Little Voice has faded out at Apple TV+.

The streamer has officially canceled Sara Bareilles' songwriting drama, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed Wednesday.

The sad announcement means Little Voice has become the streamer's first cancellation.

"A love letter to the diverse musicality of New York," is how Apple TV+ described the series ahead of its debut.

The series explored the universal journey of finding your authentic voice in your early 20s.

Bareilles (Waitress) provided original music for this fresh, intensely romantic tale of the search to find your true voice … and then the courage to use it.

Brittany O’Grady led the cast that also included Sean Teale, Colton Ryan, Shalini Bathina, Kevin Valdez, Phillip Johnson Richardson, and Chuck Cooper.

The series was produced by J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot Productions in association with Warner Bros. Television.

J.J. Abrams, Bareilles, Jessie Nelson, and Ben Stephenson (Westworld) served as executive producers.

News of the cancellation is not surprising.

‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ ‘Little Voice’ Earn Ruderman Family Foundation’s Seal of Authentic Representation (Exclusive)
Image
ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” Apple TV Plus’ “Little Voice” and Netflix’s “Locke & Key” and “Away” are the four television series that have just earned the Ruderman Family Foundation’s Seal of Authentic Representation, Variety has learned exclusively.

Additionally, the foundation is awarding the seal, which is given to those projects that demonstrate a commitment toward authentic representation of people with disabilities by featuring actors with disabilities in a speaking role with at least five lines, to two films: “Sam & Mattie Make a Zombie Movie” and “Run.”

“With each and every authentic casting decision, Hollywood takes another crucial step toward fulfilling its true and long-unrealized potential as a beacon of inclusion and diversity in all its forms,” said Jay Ruderman, president of the Ruderman Family Foundation. “The latest recipients of the Seal of Authentic Representation, building off the momentum generated by our previous rounds of honorees, powerfully exhibit the...

The Episode | Episode 2, “Lucifer! Lucifer! Lucifer!” (Aug. 21, 2020)

The Performance | “Evil twin” storylines are often only as good as the performance(s) at the center. So as much as we dreaded whatever mayhem Lucifer’s lookalike would make for the oft-tested “Deckerstar,” Ellis made Michael’s scenes wicked fun to watch.

First and foremost, there is Michael’s voice. Where many an English actor tends to affect some generic,...

Little Voice Premiere: Grade It!
Image
The next big superstar in music is a fusion of Alessia Cara, Carole King and Betty White: That’s how the protagonist, Bess King, describes herself in Little Voice, a musical drama that premiered Friday on Apple TV+.

It’s a fitting characterization for Bess, portrayed by Brittany O’Grady (Star) as a fresh-faced, 20-something with songwriting chops and a (mostly) charming, wide-eyed innocence. O’Grady’s vocal gifts are bolstered by the music, written by Grammy-nominated hitmaker Sara Bareilles, who executive-produced the show with her Waitress collaborator Jessie Nelson, J.J. Abrams and Ben Stephenson (Westworld).

Brittany O'Grady in Her Voice (2020)
Little Voice Review: A Positive and Uplifting Melody for Harsh Times
Brittany O'Grady in Her Voice (2020)
Finding your voice is difficult enough, but doing so in the city that never sleeps is considerably more difficult.

Little Voice, the latest offering from Apple TV+, tells the tale of Bess King, a young woman who is struggling to find her voice.

While that may not sound like a great pitch for a TV series, the series will immediately grab your attention, and won't let go. It's an immersive experience from start to finish.

Created by Jessie Nelson, who is famous for writing the Broadway musical adaptation of Waitress, the story plays out like a New York fairytale, in a similar vein to The CW's one-and-done Katy Keene.

Waitress was such a success on Broadway because of the writing, directing, acting, and, of course, the music. Nelson reunites with Sara Bareilles on this series, and the pair continue to make the magic happen.

From the first scene, it's clear...

‘Little Voice’: Sara Bareilles’ Unchained Melodies
Image
Bess (Brittany O’Grady), the singer-songwriter heroine of Apple TV+’s latest series Little Voice, promises her new guitar player Samuel (Colton Ryan) that he’ll learn the origins of one of her songs when she tells it to the crowd at their first gig that night. Samuel warns her against it, explaining, “Everyone in the audience thinks every song is about them, so if you tell them too much, it bursts the bubble. Less is more.”

Bess opts to follow Samuel’s advice, but Little Voice itself remains agnostic about...

‘Little Voice’ From Sara Bareilles, J.J. Abrams and Jessie Nelson: TV Review
Image
Before Bess (Brittany O’Grady) gets up the nerve to play her own songs for an audience, she anticipates the confused feedback she might get. As she explains in the first episode of “Little Voice” with a half-apologetic shrug, her music is “very…earnest.” At another point, forced to put herself in terms the music industry might understand, she describes her work — written for the show by co-creator Sara Bareilles — as “Alessia Cara meets Carole King.” And yet, it’s the “earnest” note that sticks, defining her and “Little Voice” both.

From Bareilles and Jessie Nelson, “Little Voice” is, somewhat paradoxically, a modern update of a throwback, hearkening to a time when TV was rife with earnest dramedies about talented young women trying to protect their bleeding hearts. Nelson’s direction is intimate, the color palette soft, the harshest moments threaded with plaintive piano. Most every moment, in fact, comes with a musical accompaniment,...
