Just when 2012’s Bait (a.k.a. Bait 3D) was swimming the way of other killer shark movies made in Jaws’ wake, its story eventually changed direction. Director Kimble Rendall didn’t follow that set pattern of bringing humans to the water. Quite the opposite; Bait brought the water, along with man-eating great whites, to them. And the end result is one example of “sharksploitation” that’s only become more unique as time goes by.
If not for Teen Wolf, Bait would have been helmed by another Aussie who knew his way around deadly creatures. Scheduling issues, however, led to Russell Mulcahy handing the project over to Kimble Rendall. Even so, Mulcahy’s idea remained intact, albeit now revised by a whole team of writers. Whatever was changed in the process of switching out directors, though, didn’t include altering the movie’s setting of a supermarket. The thrill of...

Director Kimble Rendall talks about his bloody horror-thriller Bait 3D, available on Blu-ray 3D and DVD September 18
Most directors don't become filmmakers overnight, with many cutting their teeth working in other capacities before ascending to the director's chair. Australian helmer Kimble Rendall is one such director, serving as an editor and producer before making his directorial debut with the 2000 thriller Cut. He also served as second unit director on blockbusters such as The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions, I, Robot, Ghost Rider, Underworld 3: The Rise of The Lycans, and last year's Killer Elite. He returns to the helm with Bait 3D, debuting on Blu-ray 3D and DVD September 18. I recently had the chance to speak with Kimble Rendall over the phone about this new release. Here's what he had to say.
I read there were a few different versions of the script going around before you became involved. I...

Singapore may be geographically small but it has big plans for its screen industry, including making good use of its co-production treaty with Australia. Miguel Gonzalez reports.
Next month, the screen industry’s eyes will be in Singapore, as the island nation hosts its first market/conference/ trade and technology exhibition, simply called ScreenSingapore.
It is part of the country’s plan to become a regional media hub. The local media industry employs 60,000 people, with about a 30 production companies, 20 animation studios and a dozen post-production houses. Plans for growth include the development of Mediapolis @ one-north – a 19-hectare innovation and R&D complex that by 2020, will host soundstages, digital production and broadcast facilities.
The country’s Media Development Authority launched the blueprint for the nation’s media industries in 2009. The Media Fusion Plan aims to make Singapore “the trusted global capital for New Asia Media” by strengthening the media infrastructure and...

Whatsammata, that teaser trailer for “14 Blades” we posted yesterday not enough for ya? You say you want more Donnie Yen killing people with all manner of blades and Sammo Hung being Sammo Hung? Well dang, ain’t you the lucky one, cause a 3-minute trailer for Daniel Lee’s “14 Blades” just popped up online. Unfortunately it’s still in Chinese, so you probably won’t get any of the plot. Mind you, not that that should stop you from wallowing in the film’s potential badassery. Thanks to reader Rick for the heads up. Starring Donnie Yen, Wei Zhao, Chun Wu, Yuwu Qi, Sammo Hung Kam-Bo, Kuan Tai Chen, Chen Zhi Hui, Ma Wu, Damian Lau, Kate Tsui, Kar-Ying Law, Xiang Dong Xu, and directed by Daniel Lee.

A teaser trailer for Donnie Yen’s latest Chinese costume martial arts epic “14 Blades” has landed online, and oh boy does it look good. I mean really, really good. It looks like the movie that “An Empress and the Warriors” should have been. The focus of the film seems to be directed at the right spot — the action — and not some insipid romance or, worst yet, some perfunctory love triangle. The Daniel Lee-directed film stars Yen and Vicki Zhao, along with Sammo Hung and Damian Lau. Set during the Ming Dynasty the movie will depict the exploits of a group of elite assassins known as the Imperial Guards. Trained since early childhood to become masters of the sword in service of the emperor, these men carried out their tasks with deadly precision. Starring Donnie Yen, Wei Zhao, Chun Wu, Yuwu Qi, Sammo Hung, Kuan Tai Chen, Chen Zhi Hui,...
