It’s summer, which means it’s beach season, but if you’re like me, Jaws ruined beaches for you long ago. Spielberg’s shark movie instilled a phobia of fish in me at an early age that has grown and evolved as I’ve matured. Still, there’s something about sharks and shark horror that attracts me, even if most entries are as compelling as rotten chum. No movie before or after has come even close to reaching the masterful terror of Jaws, but in honor of its 50th anniversary, I bring you ’10 Great Shark Movies That Aren’t ‘Jaws‘ and Where to Watch Them.’ Be warned, I’m using the term “great” pretty loosely here.

Games are an amazing source of entertainment, be it a highly competitive Fps game or an RPG with an immersive environment. In stores, video games have something or the other for everyone, but that’s not what video games are all about. Over the years, games have become more story-driven.
Games like Red Dead Redemption, Batman: Arkham Asylum, and Far Cry 3 are a few of the best games to grace the public with not just entertaining and immersive games but also beautiful storytelling. Playing games has become one of the best ways to narrate a story; the freedom to control your character and environment and finish the story at one’s own pace has made them popular among people.
However, not everyone has the option to spend thousands of dollars on a PC or hundreds of hours navigating and exploring games. Due to this, many stories don’t reach most...

We've never really thought about what a Robert Eggers and James Cameron collaboration would look like. That is, until the bizarre, Lovecraftian horror sci-fi mash-upCold Skin came across the screen. Released in 2017 and directed by Xavier Gens, and based on the novel by Albert Sánchez Piñol, this wonderfully layered movie stars the criminally underrated Ray Stevenson (Kill the Irishman), David Oakes, and Aura Garrido as they take us on a wild ride. Cold Skin is equal parts The Lighthouse, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Francis Lawrence's I Am Legend. Now imagine all those movies baked together on less than 10% of the budget that Eggers, Cameron, and Lawrence typically have to work with, and you've got this turbocharged horror thriller that's a blast to watch on a Saturday night. Only a cosmic guru like H.P. Lovecraft could have possibly conjured up this half-horror/half-sci-fi diamond in the rough. Let's...

Australian indie horror director Sean Byrne has a new shark attack film that has struck global distribution deals. Dubbed a "shark-meets-serial-killer" movie, the film will see a shark-obsessed serial killer (Suicide Squad's Jai Courtney) abduct a free-spirited surfer named Zephyr, played by Hassie Harrison (Yellowstone). He takes her out to sea in a boat, where she has to figure out how to escape before he "ritualistically feeds her to the sharks below," according to the plot. Joining the cast is Josh Heuston (Dune: Prophecy), who will play Zephyr's boyfriend, Moses. It sounds like a clever plot.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, the film was shot last year on the Gold Coast of Australia, and was written by newcomer, Nick Lepard, who also wrote Keeper, Osgood Perkins' new film following The Monkey. The majority of the theatrical rights to the international market have already been sold by Mister Smith Entertainment.

Netflix's latest disaster show is trending on a new streaming chart despite a weak reception from audiences. Stories of disaster, both real and fictional, have tended to find an audience on Netflix. Society of the Snow, from director J.J. Bayona, was the third most-watched Netflix film for the first half of 2024. The drama unfolds in 1972, focusing on the true story of a Uruguayan rugby team's experience in 1972 and their ordeal after a flight crashed in the Andes Mountains.
Under Paris was also not too far behind as the fourth most-watched film during that same period. Directed by Xavier Gens, who wrote the script with Yannick Dahan, Maud Heywang, Yaël Langmann and Olivier Torres, the French film centered on a grieving marine biologist who has to save Paris from a giant shark. As the new year begins, though, a miniseries, with only four episodes, is showing signs of success.

2024 was a breakout year for horror films from across the globe, the likes of which deserve just as much attention and accolades as any domestic genre achievements.
2024 has been a fascinating year for film. Still reeling from 2023’s SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild of America strikes and pushed back release dates, movie audiences have continually embraced the safe and soothing nostalgia of franchise fare and superhero cinema. Nearly every film from 2024’s top ten highest-grossing titles are sequels, which is creatively frustrating on some level, but this trend hasn’t impeded the horror genre from making significant cinematic gains.
Horror has seen incredible success in 2024, whether it’s The Substance accruing five major Golden Globe nominations, Terrifier 3 and Smile 2 setting new franchise records, and the critical acclaim of original releases like I Saw the TV Glow, Abigail, and Cuckoo. These domestic horror movies all bring something original to the table,...

Now that Under Paris is getting a sequel, Jason Stathams blockbuster The Meg franchise finally has some competition as the twenty-first centurys biggest shark horror series. The Megs 2018 success came as something of a surprise in a summer packed with blockbuster hits. The same year that Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, Venom, Deadpool 2, and Aquaman dominated the box office, a killer shark movie with one A-list star that spent almost three decades in development hell earned over $500 million. Similarly, Netflixs shark horror Under Paris was a surprise sleeper hit when the low-budget French disaster movie was released.

We have great news to share for fans of the hit French shark movie Under Paris. An Under Paris 2 is reportedly in development at Netflix, which means we're in for another crazy underwater adventure!
The first film was a smash hit when it landed on Netflix back in June 2024, eventually earning the title of the second most popular non-English movie on Netflix, right behind the epic monster film Troll. That's why it's not completely surprising that a sequel is in the works.
Also, the star of Under Paris, Bérénice Bejo, spilled in a recent interview with LA Tribune that production on a sequel will start in September 2025. However, there wasn't any confirmation at the time that an Under Paris 2 was actually in the works. Now, it seems that we have that confirmation.
According to Variety, French filmmaker Xavier Gens, who was behind the first movie, is currently working on the sequel.

Under Paris, a shark thriller from genre regular Xavier Gens, was released through the Netflix streaming service on June 5th (you can read our review Here) and turned out to have the best launch for a non-English language film on Netflix, drawing in more than 102.3 million views. So it’s no surprise to hear, via Variety, that a sequel is in development. Both Gens and star Bérénice Bejo, who received an Oscar nomination for her role in the 2011 silent film The Artist, are expected to return for Under Paris 2. Bejo has even been quoted as saying that the sequel would begin filming in September of next year, but Variety’s sources cautioned that the project is still in early stages and might not make it into production until 2026.

2024 has been a year filled with many exciting titles and Netflix did its dues. Under Paris premiered early this summer ahead of the Olympic Games held in the City of Lights, and it became one of the year's most surprising hits.
The shark thriller's premise is simple a fast-evolving giant shark gets stuck in the Seine and, if not captured, would lead to a massive bloodbath given an upcoming triathlon. The film gained Stephen King's approval shortly after its release on the platform, and rose to the top of the charts, dominating the Non-English top for weeks despite little to no promotion from the streaming. Given its success, Variety reports that Netflix is developing a sequel to Under Paris.

French shark horror movie Under Paris became a huge hit for Netflix, so much so that Variety reports today that the streamer is developing sequel Under Paris 2 with director Xavier Gens and star Bérénice Bejo set to return.
While Under Paris broke records as the first non-English language film on Netflix with more than 102.3 million views, the shark horror movie’s post-apocalyptic ending offered an intriguing hook for continuation.
Bejo’s grieving activist character will return, alongside Nassim Lyes (“Mayhem!”) as the empathetic cop who also survived the first film.
In a recent interview with La Tribune, Bejo claimed the sequel will start filming in September 2025. Though Variety reports that this sequel is still in its earliest stages and not likely to shoot before 2026.

Despite its seemingly final ending, the French shark thriller ‘Under Paris’ has paved the way for a sequel. According to Variety, filmmaker Xavier Gens is back at the drawing board, spurred by the film’s record-breaking debut as Netflix’s most-watched non-English language film with over 102.3 million views.
The forthcoming movie, set to begin production as early as September 2025, will bring back several key cast members.
Bérénice Bejo, known for her Oscar-nominated role in ‘The Artist’, returns as a grief-stricken activist. She’s joined by Nassim Lyes from ‘Mayhem!’, who will reprise his role as a cop.
In a recent discussion with La Tribune, Bejo shared her excitement about diving back into the chilling waters of the Parisian underground.
Although filming might kick off a bit later, possibly stretching into 2026, the anticipation is already high. ‘Under Paris’ initially caught viewers’ attention with its satirical edge and timely release before the Paris Olympics.

With its post-apocalyptic ending, the French shark movie “Under Paris” doesn’t necessarily lend itself — narratively speaking — to a sequel. But after scoring the best launch for a non-English language film on Netflix with more than 102.3 million views, filmmaker Xavier Gens is plotting a new underwater adventure, Variety has confirmed.

The renaissance of sharksploitation films continues, as Variety is reporting that MCU star Ioan Gruffudd and DCs Ross Butler are set to team up for the new thriller, Zipline. Gruffudd portrayed Reed Richards in 2005s Fantastic Four and its 2007 sequel, while Butler recently appeared in both Shazam! and Shazam! Fury of the Gods as Superhero Eugene.
Directed by Magnus Martens (Fear the Walking Dead) and written by George Mahaffey Jr. (Chief of Station), Zipline also stars Holland Roden and Sonia Ammar. Produced by Simple House Films, international rights are held by Black Bear, who will be presenting it to buyers at the American Film Market later this month. Based on the synopsis alone, it appears to be a fun flick which combines some of our favorite things, including a tropical setting, a ticking-clock premise, and, of course, sharks. Netflix has a wide range of survival thrillers and horrors available to stream but one of its titles exceeded expectations this year Under Paris. The French thriller premiered in early June, and it's still wildly popular.
Under Paris is currently enjoying its 15th week in Netflix's Top 10, taking the last spot between Sept. 16 and Sept. 22, with another million views, a huge feat for an international film. With little to no promo, Under Paris has been a huge hit since its premiere on June 5, beating even the ultimate monster, the Academy Award-winning Godzilla Minus One. Three months later, the monster of Under Paris is still holding on tightly to the charts.

Netflix has done it again, bringing unexpected retrospective success to two heavily panned, financial failures: 2007s Hitman and its 2015 reboot Hitman: Agent 47. Based on the far superior video game franchise, which allows players to take on the role of the titular Agent 47 as he completes his "hits" through stealth or strength, both movies have landed in the Netflix Global Top 10 after their debut on the platform around the world.
Hitman and Hitman: Agent 47 are available on Starz and Apple TV+ in the U.S. but not currently on Netflix.
The action thrillers are experiencing an unexpected resurgence on Netflix, similar to many other movies that have either been available on other platforms for several years, or have fallen into obscurity. Despite being based on the hugely successful video game franchise, the original release of both films resulted in huge critical disappointment, but that didnt stop them turning a profit at the box office.

At this year’s Pigeon Shrine FrightFest, we were lucky enough to catch up with directors Sarah Appleton and Phillip Escott about their new horror documentary, Generation Terror, which had its world premiere at the event.

Netflix is very close to crowning a new streaming champion and it's a very recent title. Under Paris, the 2024 French-language survival thriller from The Divide director Xavier Gens, now ranks second overall in all-time viewership on the streaming service's non-English movies chart with 99.9 million views to its name thus far. All it needs is another 3.1 million views to overtake Roar Uthaug's acclaimed Norwegian monster movie Troll for the top spot, which seems very doable given Gens's feature is only three months removed from its release. However, due to a difference in runtime, it's still a ways off from passing the leader in hours watched, Society of the Snow (239.7 million).

Under Paris ranks second on Netflix's all-time viewership list for non-English movies with 99.9 million views. The film needs 3.1 million views to overtake Troll as the most-watched non-English movie. Mixed reviews could affected Under Paris, but its environmental themes and excitement could propel it to the top spot.
Under Paris climbs Netflix's all-time viewership chart in an updated top two ranking. Co-written and directed by Xavier Gens, the French-language survival thriller follows a mourning marine biologist who must confront her tragic past in order to prevent a massacre in Paris after a giant shark emerges from the Seine. Brnice Bejo leads the Under Paris cast alongside La Lviant, Nassim Lyes, Anas Parello, Anne Marivin, Nagisa Morimoto, Aurelia Petit, and many more in supporting roles. When the movie premiered on Netflix, it was the most-watched movie across the platform globally, in any language, for two straight weeks.

The 2000s were a heyday for underrated action movies with thrilling narratives and unforgettable protagonists. Hitman, Gone in 60 Seconds, Law Abiding Citizen, and more showcased intense action that deserved more recognition. Man on Fire and Miami Vice are examples of hidden gems with heartfelt stories and powerful performances.
The 2000s were an exciting time for action movies, although there were many fantastic films from this era that failed to get the recognition they deserved. Whether it was a poor critical reception upon their initial release or having fallen away from audiences collective memory in the years since, several extraordinarily underrated action movies deserve to be recognized for their heart-racing sequences, thrilling narratives, and balls-to-wall action hero protagonists. While these movies may not be as well regarded as the biggest hits of that time, they were no less worthy of acclaim.

Netflix's 2024 Survival Thriller Is All But Guaranteed A Sequel After Astonishing 96.9M Views Record
"Under Paris" is one of Netflix's most popular non-English movies, ranking third of all time. The film's success globally indicates an inevitable sequel, as disaster films like this tend to entertain viewers. A potential sequel was teased in the post-credits scene, hinting at a continuation of the shark invasion storyline.
Out of all the foreign Netflix movies released over the years, Under Paris has been an overwhelming success for the streaming service, leading one to believe that a sequel is in the cards. The 2024 French survival thriller film, directed by Xavier Gens, chronicles a shark outbreak in the unlikeliest of places Paris, France. Lilith, a shortfin mako shark, travels from the Pacific Ocean to the River Seine in Paris, threatening the citizens of France's largest city. Under Paris' "Sharks in the Seine" premise may seem ridiculous, but the movie's horrors and thrills seemingly drew a substantial crowd in.

Since its debut in June, Under Paris has been steadily climbing up the Netflix Top 10 list, but the shark thriller could end its run as the most popular non-English movie on the streaming service.
Under Paris is currently sitting in third place on Netflix’s most popular non-English film list with 96.6M views, behind only Society of the Snow (98.5M) and Troll (103M). The film still has roughly a month left in its 91-day premiere window, so it could easily overtake Troll to take the number one spot.

Slicing Paris in half, the river Seine flows through the heart of French identity, past the Musée d’Orsay, the Louvre, Notre Dame Cathedral, and the Académie Française, the centuries-old institution of letters that guards against the bastardization of the French language, leading a valiant resistance to American cultural expansion. In these sacrosanct waters and adjoining catacombs, Under Paris director and co-writer Xavier Gens has let loose a monster shark, a mutated, self-replicating, mostly CGI descendant of Jaws, that ultimate symbol of the statesidesummer blockbuster. Quelle horreur! But to hear the Gallic helmer tell it, the Netflix film is far from a capitulation to Hollywood but in fact a sly act of cinematic subversion.

Under Paris, a French shark attack film, is one of the most-watched on Netflix with great reviews. Despite lower audience scores, the film remains popular and successful with subtitles on the platform. The thrilling storyline and unexpected ending make Under Paris a top contender for a potential sequel.
The Netflix shark attack film Under Paris has just become one of the most-watched films on the platform. The French-language thriller, released on June 5 of this year, is still soaring through the top spots of the popular movies list on the platform, but Netflix is now reporting it is one of their most streamed titles ever. Not bad for a creature feature of the shark attack subgenre that most Americans have to see with subtitles.

Earlier this month, horror master Stephen King took to Twitter to proclaim, "I thought Under Paris would be a jokey movie, like Sharknado, but Twitter convinced me to give it a watch, and it's really quite good. The last 25 minutes were amazing."
"Under Paris" (which I recently recommended in my monthly streaming horror column) is Netflix's new French shark movie in which a shark suddenly appears in the Seine and starts making fish food of tasty humans. All of it is played pretty straight, but there's definitely a sense of humor to the material, and that was intentional, according to director Xavier Gens.
"The whole idea was to take what we observe in French society and from politicians and caricature some of it," Gens told Variety. "We mocked all of it, and in some cases didn't need to caricature that much. We really had fun inventing an alternate reality...

Four divers die in the opening scene of Under Paris, setting the tone for a high shark kill count throughout the movie. Over 10 people perish in the catacombs sequence, with chaos ensuing as the sharks wreak havoc underground. The movie showcases a significant amount of deaths, with more than 50 people likely losing their lives in the final segment.
Under Paris does not explicitly reveal how many human characters die from the shark attacks throughout its runtime, but gives a fair idea about what the overall kill count could be. Directed and co-written by Xavier Gens, Netflix's Under Paris recently became a sleeper hit on the streaming platform and is surprisingly also being compared with Steven Spielberg's Jaws for its terrifying portrayal of sharks. Given how Under Paris' Rotten Tomatoes critics' score is 62%, it clearly does not rank as high as Jaws in terms of quality and cultural impact.

The historic gains of the French far-right party Rassemblement National during the European elections on June 9 and French President Emmanuel Macron’s shock decision to dissolve the National Assembly have not only propelled the country’s film and TV industry into a state of panic but are causing ripples across the economy.
Boasting the second-biggest economy in Europe, France saw its stock exchange take a hit this week amid talks that Marine Le Pen’s far-right party had a solid chance of performing strongly in the parliamentary elections set for June 30 and July 7. The three biggest banks in France, BNP Paribas, Credit Agricole and Societe Generale, have lost between 12-16% in value this week, according to Reuters.
In addition to bank stocks that have slumped, concerns about the country’s political crisis have also driven the biggest weekly jump in investor demand for government bonds since 2011, amid the euro debt crisis,...

Under Paris has gore, language, and intense violence, so it's strictly for adult viewers. The film features bloody shark attacks and jump scares, which aren't suitable for kids. Younger viewers are advised to watch the tamer, PG-rated Jaws instead of this gory thriller.
Netflixs original movie Under Paris is a bona fide hit, but since it revolves around man-eating sharks feasting on triathlon participants in the French capital, it might not be suitable for children. Three years after her entire team was wiped out by a hungry shark, a scientist is forced to confront her troubled past when a swarm of similarly peckish sharks show up in the Seine. Directed by Xavier Gens and starring Brnice Bejo, Under Paris has proven to be a sleeper hit for Netflix.

Under Paris is now trending on Netflix, and the new horror movie is a great reminder to watch Blumhouse's divisive $54 million box office hit from this year. The horror genre is consistently popular, with all kinds of original properties finding success due to their low budgets and mass appeal. Under Paris is one of the most recent horror movies to find success on the popular streaming platform, with the Netflix film garnering quite a fanbase. Humans are powerless against the apex predators in Under Paris' ending, highlighting the sharks' dominance over mankind. The end credits scene in Under Paris shows the global extent of the shark invasion, spreading from Paris to London, the US, and Asia. Under Paris sets up a potential sequel with a major cliffhanger, expanding the narrative to a worldwide battle against the shark invasion.
Although Netflix's new shark movie, Under Paris, adopts many familiar tropes and storytelling devices of the creature feature sub-genre, it ends on a surprisingly uncertain note that leaves a viewer with more questions than answers. Directed by Xavier Gens, Under Paris is a taut, quick-paced eco-horror film that does not necessarily rank among the genre epics like Jaws and King Kong. However, it packs enough gory chills and thrills to keep viewers glued to their screens throughout its runtime.

Under Paris surpasses Godzilla Minus One on Netflix, but faces mixed reviews for its shark horror premise and lackluster plot. Directed by Xavier Gens, the movie combines fishy vengeance with sharksploitation, earning critics' approval but disappointing audiences. Visual effects impress in this European take on shark movies, but its predictable plot and mediocre deaths left viewers unsatisfied.
