Errol Morris, director of the iconic true-crime documentary The Thin Blue Line, has partnered up with Netflix again in order to make a documentary about the Manson murders. The title is Chaos: The Manson Murders, and it's set to be released by Netflix on March 7, 2025.

Chaos: The Manson Murders is based on the 2019 book, Chaos: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties, by Tom O'Neill with Dan Piepenbring. The book offers an alternate version of the story that flowed into the mainstream in 1974 when case prosecutor Vincent Bugliosi released the bestseller Helter Skelter — becoming the version of the murders with which we are all familiar. In O'Neill's book, however, he argues that the 1969 Tate–Labianca murders committed by the Manson Family could have been associated with the CIA program Operation Chaos, which focused on domestic espionage.

Prepare for some captivating documentaries and docuseries from Netflix this year. The streamer announced during its Next on Netflix event that it will be premiering new projects about the Manson murders, Osama Bin Laden, the Titan submarine implosion and Hurricane Katrina, just to name a few of its upcoming buzzy docs.

The first major new documentary release is a big one. The documentary film “Chaos: The Manson Murders” will premiere on March 7. From legendary filmmaker Errol Morris, who previously released “The Thin Blue Line” and “The Fog of War,” little is known about this project other than its subject matter. The film is likely based on Tom O’Neill’s “Chaos: Charles Manson, the CIA, and the Secret History of the Sixties.” Morris, Robert Fernandez and Steven Hathaway serve as producers.

Both newly announced titles, Chaos: The Manson Murders and Pangolin were dated for release on March 7 and April 21, respectively. Chaos had no logline attached — though the title leaves little to the imagination, as to the film’s subject. The documentary festival Doc NYC has unveiled the full lineup for its 14th edition. It will be a total of 114 features and 129 short films. The festival runs in-person November 8-16 at IFC Center, Sva Theatre and Village East by Angelika and continues online through November 26 with films available to viewers across the U.S.

The Short Lists sections showcase a selection of nonfiction features and shorts that the festival’s programming team considers to be among the year’s strongest contenders for Oscars and other awards. The Winner’s Circle are films already feted at major international film events while Come As You Are section highlights films about people striving to find their place in the world, or in their communities.

Costume Designer Charlese Antoinette Jones has signed for representation by M88. Throughout her design career, Jones has worked on acclaimed films like Shaka King’s “Judas and the Black Messiah,” the Whitney Houston biopic “I Wanna Dance With Somebody,” Ben Affleck’s “Air” and the upcoming Apple TV thriller “The Instigators.”

“I’m so excited to be working with M88 as I continue to expand my career,” said Jones in a statement. “I’m especially appreciative of [James] Swoope for his unwavering support and championing me as a multifaceted creative.”

In 2019, Jones launched the Black Designer Database, a digital fashion house that aims to bring exposure and support to Black designers by connecting them with consumer and media opportunities. She also runs her own jewelry brand Char Ant Gold.

As she signs on with M88, Jones will continue to be represented by WME and Frankfurth Kurnit Klein & Selz, and maintains her membership to the CDG.

“The Fog of War” and “The Thin Blue Line” director Errol Morris’ next documentary film will be focused on the “High Priest of LSD” Timothy Leary and will debut on Showtime later this year, Showtime Documentary Films announced Tuesday.

The documentary, currently with the working title “A Film By Errol Morris,” is inspired by the memoir “Tripping the Bardo with Timothy Leary: My Psychedelic Love Story” by Joanna Harcourt-Smith. It will examine the romantic relationship between Harcourt-Smith and Leary as he went from an advocate for the psychedelic LSD drug and then became a narc in 1974.

The film will explore Leary’s period of exile, his re-imprisonment and his subsequent cooperation with the authorities and whether Leary and Harcourt-Smith truly had the “perfect love” or if something else was at play.

In today’s film news roundup, “I Love Lucy” draws nostalgic fans to theaters, “Desolation Center” is set for release and “What She Said: The Art of Pauline Kael” and “American Dharma” are sold.

Fathom Events reported a Tuesday night showing of “I Love Lucy: A Colorized Celebration” drew more than 60,000 attendees with an estimated $777,645 at 660 North American sites.

The take left the one-night showing in sixth place for the day at the domestic box office. “I Love Lucy: A Colorized Celebration” featured five episodes of “I Love Lucy,” along with a featurette on the colorization of the shows.

The showing took place on Ball’s 108th birthday. Fathom, which is operated by the AMC, Cinemark and Regal chains, said some locations adding showtimes and auditoriums to meet fan demand.

“Wormwood,” Errol Morris’ six-part investigative miniseries about the CIA cover-up around the mysterious death of biological warfare scientist Frank Olson in 1953, pushes non-fiction storytelling in a more personal direction with speculative fiction.

That’s because the story is told from the point of view of Olson’s son, Eric, now in his seventies, who has spent his life trying understand why his father plunged to his death from the 13th floor of the Statler hotel in New York City, a few days after he was secretly drugged with LSD by his CIA boss. Was it suicide? Or was he pushed after refusing to continue to participate in the CIA’s secret mind-controlling program called MKUltra. Eric believes he was murdered but has never been able to prove it.

Eric found a kindred spirit in Morris, who, with his go-to editor and co-writer Steven Hathaway, totally blurs the line between truth and fiction.
