Indonesian film production company Imajinari is expanding its footprint with an ambitious slate of upcoming projects following the breakout success of its comedy hit “Agak Laen,” which accumulated 9.1 million cinema viewers to become the bestselling Indonesian comedy of all time.

Founded in 2021 by Ernest Prakasa and Dipa Andika, Imajinari has set “Tinggal Meninggal,” a dark comedy in post-production. The film, directed by Kristo Immanuel, will be followed by “Agak Laen 2,” the sequel to their record-breaking comedy, with Muhadkly Acho returning as writer and director.

“Our philosophy is we want to make original stories, and we want to make sure everything is ready,” Andika told Variety at Hong Kong FilMart. “We don’t want to push it if it’s not ready.”

Global streaming giant Netflix has made a significant ongoing commitment to production of original content from Southeast Asia and in the Chinese language.

For 2024, Netflix has unveiled a slate of four Chinese-language series, all hailing from Taiwan. From Thailand, it detailed seven series and one film. From Indonesia, it has committed to five films and a series co-written and directed by the consistently successful Joko Anwar, marking his first partnership with the streamer.

Additionally, Netflix has confirmed the appointment of Maya Huang as its head of Chinese-language content.

The moves stand in sharp contrast to the mid-January happenings at rival global streamer Prime Video, which is cutting staff in the region and ending its brief experiment with Southeast Asian originals.

In Indonesia, Netflix says it is broadening its storytelling with a range of genres including comedy, action, fantasy, and sci-fi thrillers.

Indonesian genre specialist Timo Tjahjanto has begun production on “The Shadow Strays,” a new action film project.

Tjahjanto is one half of a writing-directing pair with Kimo Stamboel that are colloquially known as the Mo Brothers and previously delivered “Headshot.” However, it was as a solo director that Tjahjanto was signed to a multi-film deal with Netflix in 2022. He delivered his first picture under that arrangement later that year. “The Big 4” debuted in Netflix’s non-English language top ten.

Production of the new title is handled by Frontier Pictures with Wicky V. Olindo and Anne P. Ralie named as producers. The completion date has not been revealed.

Tjahjanto previously worked with Netflix on The Big 4, which charted on Netflix’s Global Top 10 Non-English Films chart in the first week of its release.

Currently in production, The Shadow Strays stars Aurora Ribero (Like & Share), Hana Malasan (Ben & Jody), Ali Fikri (Nussa), Adipati Dolken (Posesif) and reteams Tjahjanto with The Big 4 actors Kristo Immanuel and Andri Mashadi.

Indonesian comedy action movie “The Big 4” is the second most watched non-English-language film of the past week, new data shows.

Directed by Timo Tjahjanto, “The Big 4” tells the story of a by-the-book female detective who investigates the death of her father and follows a clue to a remote tropical island, only to find out his true identity as a leader of a group of assassins. Now hunted by his enemies, she has to team up with the crooks her father had trained – four retired, down on their luck assassins itching to get back in the game.

For the week of Dec. 12 to 18, the movie ranks second in the streamer’s global non-English film list with 16.4 million hours viewed. The top title over the same period was “God’s Crooked Lines” which debuted at the San Sebastian film festival and had a limited theatrical career in its native Spain.

Following a series of films that are quite brutal or horrific (or both), Timo Tjahjanto decided to change his style a bit, by implementing intense comic elements in his narrative in a distinctly comic-book style, retaining, though, the aforementioned aspects. The result is “The Big 4”, which has now started to stream on Netflix.

The intro scene of the movie sets the tone for what is about to follow, as it starts inside an orphanage whose owners use the kids in order to harvest organs. Enter the titular Big 4, leader Topan, sniper Jenggo, tempered Alpha, the only woman of the group, and youngster Pelor, who save the children there while creating mayhem in their path, killing the bad guys in the most brutal, to the point of funny, ways. A bit later on, it is revealed that the group also has a leader, Petrus, who coordinates their efforts, while retaining a father-children relationship with them.

The Big Four is an action/adventure/comedy movie directed by Timo Tjahjanto starring Abimana Aryasatya, Putri Marino, Arie Kriting, Lutesha and Kristo Immanuel.

The last time Timo Tjahjanto delved in the action genre was with 2018’s superb “The Night Comes for Us”. While he has since been making horror films, he returns soon to action with “The Big 4”, which is gearing up for release on Netflix soon. However, never one to be legion-holed, Timo changes things up, with this being is first action comedy.

Four retired assassins spring back into action when they cross paths with a straight-arrow cop who is determined to track down an elusive murder.

The film stars Abimana Aryasatya, Putri Marino, Arie Kriting, Lutesha, Kristo Immanuel, Marthino Lio, Michelle Tahalia, Budi Ros and Donny Damara. It releases on Netflix worldwide on December 15th.

Prolific Indonesian producer KawanKawan Media, which has Makbul Mubarak’s “Autobiography” in competition at the Venice Film Festival’s Horizons strand, has a raft of projects on its slate.

The company, led by Yulia Evina Bhara, scored a hat trick of wins at Locarno over the last few years with Yosep Anggi Noen’s “The Science of Fictions” (2019), Carlo Francisco Manatad’s “Whether the Weather Is Fine” (2021) and Ming Jin Woo’s “Stone Turtle” (2022), and won an award at Cph:dox for Fanny Chotimah’s documentary “You and I” in 2020.
