Listen Carefully: Fatherhood Meets Terror in Indie Horror Thriller
Ryan Barton-Grimley
Becoming a parent can be scary some people. For the character of Andy McNeary in the new thriller, Listen Carefully, fatherhood is downright terrifying. Writer/Director/Star Ryan Barton-Grimley’s atmospheric horror film was unleashed on the world December 16, 2024. It is now available to put you on edge this holiday season. Listen Carefully is a truly unpredictable experience that will have you anxiously anticipating what could possibly happen next. It’s like reliving a bad dream you never had. That’s appropriate since Barton-Grimley attributes a post-baby nightmare as the inspiration for this trippy cinematic journey. Terror Through the Baby Monitor in Listen Carefully The Plot: When troubled assistant bank manager Andy McNeary’s baby daughter goes missing, he must follow the instructions of a mysterious voice on the other end of a baby monitor to save her before she disappears and his life is ruined forever…and that’s not the half of it.

‘Listen Carefully’ Review
Image
Stars: Ryan Barton-Grimley, Simone Barton-Grimley, Ari Schneider, Richard Gayler | Written and Directed by Ryan Barton-Grimley

Listen Carefully, is very much Ryan Barton-Grimley’s baby. He not only wrote, directed and starred in it, he also did some of the editing and cinematography. The story itself has its roots in his own anxiety after his daughter was born while he was shooting The Truth. The tension and uncertainty that brought on would become the nightmare that inspired the film’s script.

The film begins with a quote from T.S. Eliot: “What we call the beginning is often the end. And to make an end is to make a beginning. The end is where we start from.” These words flash on the screen in flickering 8-bit digital letters, immediately setting a tone of disorientation and unease. This leads into a bizarre chase sequence, where the protagonist, Andy (Barton-Grimley), is pursued by hooded figures wearing baby masks.

Image
Ryan Barton-Grimley’s psychological thriller Listen Carefully is set to make its worldwide debut on Digital HD platforms on 16 December, following a successful festival run. The feature, which blends neo-noir elements with deeply personal themes, explores the dark recesses of the human psyche through an intense and emotionally charged storyline.

The film follows Andy McNeary, portrayed by Barton-Grimley himself, a corrupt assistant bank manager whose life spirals out of control after his infant daughter is stolen. As Andy becomes ensnared in a web of psychological torment, viewers are taken on a journey through his fractured reality. Co-star Simone Barton-Grimley plays Andy’s wife, Abby, while Ari Schneider lends an eerie presence as “The Voice.”

Listen Carefully Debuts On Digital December 16
Ryan Barton-Grimley
Haida Street Films and Rbg Films are preparing to present their psychological thriller, Listen Carefully, on digital platforms next month. Andy McNeary is just your average assistant bank manager with anxiety issues and a newborn baby. He certainly didn’t expect to come home one evening and find the aforementioned baby to be baby-napped. The kidnappers’ communication tool of choice: Andy’s baby monitor (which must have a heck of a range). Andy must keep the monitor with him at all times and follow their instructions if he wants to see his infant again. But Andy’s got a hammer, and the bloody screenshots reveal he’s not afraid to use it for its unintended purpose… Listen Carefully made its world premiere at Fantaspoa, the International Fantastic Film Festival of Porto Alegre. It went on to premiere in North America at the Dances With Films festival, and toured the circuit from there,...

Listen Carefully - Jennie Kermode - 19048
Ryan Barton-Grimley
To be responsible for a baby is to know a special kind of fear. One can run from it, trying to hand off that responsibility to someone else, but that doesn’t mean it will go away. When bank manager Andy (writer/director Ryan Barton-Grimley) hides away at work, exhausted as he is, dreams follow him. Dreams of adults wearing baby masks and making baby noises, chasing him down the street.

There’s a lot here that everyone who has experienced that responsibility will relate to. There’s also a really good hook for a thriller. Sadly, Barton-Grimley, who badly needed another set of eyes on the script and a more assertive editor, has failed to fully capitalise on either. Having invoked the dream scenario early on, he struggles to recover any real tension, and if the film ends up scaring you, it will be purely because of the baggage you take in with you.

Philip “Hawk” Hawkins doesn’t just dream about killing vampires – He eats, sleeps, drinks and freakin’ breaths it. After getting kicked out the Army for staking a fellow soldier with a blunt two by four, Hawk almost dies of boredom working as a night security guard in his hometown of Santa Muerte, California.

Just when it looks like all Hawk’s options in life have expired, filthy blood-sucking vampires appear and, of course, nobody believes him. With his back up against the wall and hordes of murderous vampires closing in, Hawk enlists the help of the one person who kind of believes him – Revson “Rev” McCabe, a dimwitted, vegan-pacifist groundskeeper. Together they join forces to save the whole entire freakin’ world.

'Repatriation': Film Review
There has been no shortage of films centering on the subject of soldiers coming home after serving overseas. But Douglas Mueller's drama puts an intriguing spin on the familiar subject, its main character turning out to be suffering from something far different than post-traumatic stress disorder. Featuring a terrific performance by Ryan Barton-Grimley in the lead role, Repatriation is a modest indie film worth seeking out.

The story begins with Chad (Barton-Grimley) returning to his Midwestern hometown, still wearing the fatigues testifying to his military service. He immediately embarks on a bar crawl, where at each stop he's warmly...
