The documentary serves as a stark reminder to remain vigilant and aware of the pervasive threat from unidentified monsters and predators. However, it also condenses Lucie's life to her role as a victim for financial gain and entertainment value. Lucie Blackman was tragically assaulted and killed by Joji Obara, a wealthy real estate businessman and serial rapist. Obara was eventually linked to Lucie's murder and was convicted of nine other counts of manslaughter and rape. He will spend the rest of his life in prison.

Missing: The Lucie Blackman Case Review
Image
On July 1, 2000, Lucie Blackman, a vivacious, 21-year-old flight attendant disappeared. She’d moved from her home in the UK to Tokyo in search of exotic adventures and a way of financing some debts. Rumors of abduction by a cult or sex trafficking abounded, and the Tokyo Police had few leads to share with her terrified family.

Missing: The Lucie Blackman Case revisits Blackman’s final days in Japan and subsequent disappearance. As directed by Hyoe Yamamoto, the new Netflix documentary plays less like a true crime mystery and more like a snuff film. Featuring interviews with Blackman’s friends, family and several key Japanese investigators, the film makes it clear early on that Lucie met with a terrible fate. Yamamoto doesn’t want to titillate the audience with a gallery of suspects, theories and conjecture. He wants viewers to know from the outset that their deepest fears for Blackman are warranted,...

Joji Obara In ‘The Lucie Blackman Case,’ Explained: Where Is Joji Now?
Image
Jeffrey Dahmer, a psychopath and racist serial killer, is a well-recognized name due to numerous films and series that have portrayed him and attempted to analyze his disturbed psyche. However, a similar figure, Joji Obara, also known as Kim Sung-Jon, lived most of his life in the shadows of Tokyo’s streets, and very few people even knew about him. He was an extremely perverted and twisted psychopath with a particular obsession with white women. Obara would lure them into his trap, drugging and raping them. While some victims managed to return home, others suffered brutal slaughter at Obara’s hands or eventually died after getting drugged by Obara. In the recent Netflix documentary Missing The Lucie Blackman Case, the disappearance of 23-year-old Lucie Blackman was highlighted, shedding light on the actions of Joji Obara, this sick monster who destroyed many lives and robbed young aspiring women of their dreams,...

‘Missing: The Lucie Blackman Case’ Review/Recap: Is Lucie Alive?
Image
In the Netflix documentary film Missing: The Lucie Blackman Case, the horrifying disappearance of a 21-year-old British girl, Lucie Blackman, unfolds. Lucie relocated to Japan and started working as a hostess at a restaurant in Tokyo, but after merely three months, she mysteriously disappeared. Through an extensive investigation into the disappearance of Lucie Blackman, the shocking revelation of a stone-cold murderer and sexual predator lurking in the streets of Japan surfaced.

In this documentary, the account of the events surrounding Lucie Blackman’s disappearance is discussed and revisited, featuring a grieving father, Tim Blackman, who did everything in his power to bring his daughter back but found himself entangled in a feud with the Tokyo police. This nearly 23-year-old murder case was once major news, but only a few people outside these countries —the UK and Japan—are aware of it. However, this is where Netflix takes the initiative to...

Lucie Blackman: The Missing Woman Who Exposed Tokyo’s Seedy Underbelly
Image
Horrible crimes have been committed amid Tokyo’s shadowy nightlife, and a young Western woman is in the middle of it. So are the police and the media, each handling things as they’ve been taught, which doesn’t endear them to each other. No, it’s not another season of HBO’s Tokyo Vice, although Jake Adelstein, the American expat newspaperman whose memoir is the basis of that series, plays a major role here as well. The new Netflix doc Missing: The Lucie Blackman Case is a more modest...
