Back in November 2024, Prime Video tried its hand at remaking a classic cult film, Cruel Intentions. The 1999 movie stars Reese Witherspoon, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Ryan Phillippe. The streamer decided to restart the franchise off with an 8-episode television series. Though its the end of the road for the show, clearly not hitting with audiences like its predecessors.
According to TVLine, Cruel Intentions on Prime Video has been cancelled after just one season. There was no reason given as to why the streaming service decided to go in this route. The company usually doesn't release viewership numbers like other streamer and networks do, and it doesn't have a Top 10 feature to help us gauge how many people were watching.
Though honestly if you just head to Rotten Tomatoes to see what viewers thought in general or look at what critics have written, this move really isn't a surprise. Not to sound cruel,...

There’s so much great TV out there, and most isn’t derived from legacy franchises.
Prime Video didn’t seem to get the memo because it continues to bring these excellent properties back to screens without the thrill of their predecessor.
The latest effort, Cruel Intentions, based on the hit movie of the same name, premiered in November 2024 and was pretty much ignored.
(Prime Video/Screenshot)
The 2024 version of Cruel Intentions was a below-average teen drama at best, playing out more like Max’s canceled Gossip Girl reboot, which had some redeeming qualities at the very least.
The 1999 Cruel Intentions had a compelling plot and a cast that included Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillipe, Reese Witherspoon, and Selma Blair.

As the lame follow-up movies can attest, you can’t reinvent the wheel without the cast that made it such a success in the first place.

The power plays come to an early end as Prime Video cancels their television adaptation of 1999 teen drama Cruel Intentions after one season. The series took audiences to the halls of Manchester College in Washington, D.C. as a pair of step-siblings set out to secure their place among the elite, and to charm the school's vice president's daughter in their twisted game. Released in November 2024, Cruel Intentions' cast starred Sarah Catherine Hook, Zac Burgess, and Savannah Lee Smith as Caroline, Lucien, and Annie, while original movie star Sean Patrick Thomas played a new role.
As reported by Variety, Prime Video has confirmed thatCruel Intentions has been canceled following the release of its debut season. While no official reason has been given, low viewership and low ratings may have sealed its fate. Cruel Intentions will not return for a second season. The 2024 followup to the 1999 movie of the same name released its first (and now, only) installment last November.
The show endured a long road to release, starting first at Freevee in 2021 before moving to Prime Video in 2023. Before that, NBC had ordered and cancelled a different pilot inspired by the movie in 2016, and an attempted prequel series from Fox also never made it to air.
Amazon’s series starred Sarah Catherine Hook, Zac Burgess, Savannah Lee Smith, Sara Silva, John Harlan Kim, Khobe Clarke, Sean Patrick Thomas and Brooke Lena Johnson. Neal H. Moritz and Roger Kumble who produced (the former) and wrote and directed (the latter) the original film, also served as executive producers.
Per the description, Cruel Intentions “follows the elite students of Manchester College, a Washington, D.C.-adjacent university, where reputation means everything, fraternities and sororities are the gold standard,...

Amazon has dealt a cruel blow to fans of the teen drama remake of Cruel Intentions by shelving the series after a single season. Fans of the 1999 movie had been quite on board with this new take on the story, although critics panned it as another unnecessary rehash of a popular franchise that failed to capture anything that made the movie a cult classic.
According to Variety, Cruel Intentions, which took more than three years to make it from its original pitch to screens on Prime Video in November 2024, failed to land a place in the streaming Top 10 during its run, which is probably the biggest reason for its cancelation, but no doubt the dismal 24% from critics didn’t help its cause.
For those who have not seen the series, the synopsis reads, "Following the elite students of Manchester College, a Washington, D.C.-adjacent university, where reputation means everything,...

Amazon won't be moving forward with a second season of Cruel Intentions, the new TV series that served as a reboot of the 1999 film of the same name. The news comes four months after the show's debut on Prime Video in 2024.
Per Variety, Cruel Intentions has been canceled at Prime Video after one season. It's an unfortunate end for the series, which had to overcome some major hurdles in development to finally get made. The Cruel Intentions reboot was first announced in 2021 for IMDb TV/Amazon Freevee in 2021, though it was not officially ordered to series on Prime Video until late 2023.
Upon release, the reboot proved to be polarizing, garnering a Rotten Tomatoes approval rating of 24% with a much-higher audience score of 81%. The audience score was strong, but that alone may not have been enough to save the series. Exact viewership numbers are not known for the Cruel Intentions reboot,...

“Cruel Intentions” will not be returning to Prime Video.
Prime Video has opted not to renew “Cruel Intentions” for a second season, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap. The news comes just under four months after “Cruel Intentions” first launched on Prime Video in November.
The series, which was led by “The White Lotus” star Sarah Catherine Hook, reimagined the 1999 cult classic film of the same name as well as 1988’s “Dangerous Liaisons,” except this time the tale took place in collegiate Greek life.
Hook starred as Caroline Merteuil, who made a deal with her step-brother, Lucien Belmont (Zac Burgess), for Lucien to seduce naive newcomer and daughter of the VP, Annie Grover (Savannah Lee Smith), in order to sway her to join Caroline’s sorority as a way to shield her chapter from an ongoing hazing scandal. If Lucien was successful, Caroline promised him that she would give him what he really wanted: her.

A lot of shows like Tell Me Lies are equally intriguing, dark, and relationship-focused as the 2020s drama series. After debuting in 2022, Hulu's Tell Me Lies drew solid reviews for overcoming a slow start to become a thoroughly engaging glimpse at the toxic relationship between Lucy (Grace Van Patten) and Stephen (Jackson White), two college sweethearts whose romance veers off course over time and the struggle they share to keep the pieces together. Based on the eponymous novel by Carola Lovering, the series jumps through time to depict the cornerstone moments of their relationship.

Prime Video’s Cruel Intentions TV show mixes drama and mystery in a modern version of the 1999 movie of the same name, and some movies and TV shows make for an excellent companion watch thanks to their similar themes and stories. Based on the 1782 novel Les Liaisons dangereuses and Roger Kumble’s 1999 movie, Cruel Intentions follows wealthy step-siblings Caroline Merteuil (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Lucien Belmont (Zac Burgess). When an anti-Greek movement threatens to end all fraternities and sororities, Caroline targets the vice-President’s daughter, Annie Grover (Savannah Lee Smith), who is joining her university.
Caroline knows that, if Annie joins her sorority, Delta Phi, it will be safe, but she needs Lucien’s help. They make a deal: Lucien has to seduce Annie and sleep with her so they can lure her into Delta Phi, and if Lucien achieves this, Caroline will finally sleep with him, but if he fails,...

The showrunners behind the Cruel Intentions reboot detail their plans for season 2. Debuting on Prime Video in November, and taking inspiration from the popular 1999 film starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, the new version focuses on the step-siblings Caroline Merteuil and Lucien Belmont who will do just about anything to maintain their status at Manchester University, including seducing the Vice President's daughter. The cast of the Cruel Intentions reboot includes Sarah Catherine Hook, Zac Burgess, Savannah Lee Smith, Sara Silva, John Harlan Kim, Khobe Clarke, Brooke Lena Johnson, and Sean Patrick Thomas.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, showrunners and executive producers Phoebe Fisher and Sara Goodman address the possibility of the Prime Video drama coming back for season 2. While the showrunning duo makes it clear that they don't yet know whether the series will be renewed, they do have an idea about where the story could go next and it's related to the school year.

As Hollywood continues to remake past hits, it's no surprise that the '90s cult classic Cruel Intentions is now a Prime Video series. Starring Sarah Catherine Hook (First Kill), Zac Burgess (Boy Swallows Universe), and Savannah Lee Smith (Gossip Girl), this adaptation of the unforgettably devious 1999 film and Pierre Choderlos de Laclos's novel retells the sultry story of a bet between two wealthy and dysfunctional step-siblings in a modern-day setting.
Hook takes on the viciously manipulative Caroline Merteuil, inspired by Sarah Michelle Gellar's Kathryn, alongside Burgess, who acts as her playboy step-brother Lucien, based on Ryan Phillippe's selfish and brooding Sebastian. Caught in the middle of their mind games is Smith's Annie Grover, the inexperienced daughter of the U.S. Vice President, who's reminiscent of Reese Witherspoon's virginal Annette Hargrove.
Although the teen romantic drama pulls inspiration from the originals, the show stands on its own.

Prime Video’s Cruel Intentions TV show borrowed the premise from the 1999 movie and modernized its main characters, and it made big changes to the movie’s best character, but these made it even better. After a failed prequel and sequel, Cruel Intentions returned but now as a TV show. The Cruel Intentions TV show isn’t a remake of the movie nor a sequel, but it does take the same premise and the essence of its main characters is the same: wealthy step-siblings who make a bet involving an innocent student.
The Cruel Intentions TV show follows Caroline Merteuil (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Lucien Belmont (Zac Burgess), who make a bet to get Lucien to sleep with the Vice President’s daughter, Annie Grover (Savannah Lee Smith), so Caroline can get her to join her sorority. Accompanying Caroline is CeCe (Sara Silva), her best friend and also a member of the Delta Phi sorority.

Prime Videos Cruel Intentions TV show introduces a new generation of wealthy and ruthless students, and it now has a confirmed major connection to the 1999 movie, but this actually hurts the TV show. Directed by Roger Kumble and based on Pierre Choderlos de Laclos 1782 novel Les Liaisons dangereuses, Cruel Intentions introduces the audience to wealthy step-siblings Kathryn Merteuil (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Phillippe), who make a bet for their entertainment: Sebastian has to seduce the new headmasters daughter, Annette Hargrove (Reese Witherspoon), and sleep with her.
If Sebastian achieves this, Kathryn will finally sleep with him, but if he fails, Kathryn will get his beloved vintage car. When Amy Heckerling scored a teen comedy hit in 1995 with "Clueless" by working from the Jane Austen's 1816 novel "Emma," Hollywood figured there might be a potential goldmine in youth-skewing films based on classic works of fiction. Gil Junger certainly found this to be the case with "10 Things I Hate About You," his high school-set take on William Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew," while Robert Iscove scored a box office hit with his "Pygmalion" riff "She's All That." So it wasn't all that shocking when Roger Kumble found intrigue and no shortage of sex appeal via "Cruel Intentions," his scheming rich kids reworking of Pierre Choderlos de Laclos' "Les Liaisons dangereuses."
Why did the film work so well? Columbia Pictures' willingness to release the film with an R rating allowed Kumble to push much further with the sensuality. He also had an absolute juggernaut of a young cast in Sarah Michelle Gellar,...

Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers for “Cruel Intentions,” both the 1999 film and the entire first season of the new Prime Video series.”
Twenty-five years later, “Cruel Intentions” will still make you blush.
The 1999 film about high-society stepsiblings Sebastian (Ryan Phillippe) and Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar) curing their privileged boredom by corrupting the last shreds of innocence in their peers feels both ahead of its time and like a movie that could never be made today. Littered with culturally insensitive language and driven by unbridled, often taboo sexuality, it was a cultural shock to the system in the waning days of the last millennium.
Replicating even a shred of that ethos was one of the many challenges facing this new version of the story. But perhaps the tallest order for “Cruel Intentions” was making a timeless tale of striving for power through sex feel relevant and revolutionary in the era of Gen Z,...

Prime Video’s resurrection of “Cruel Intentions” has arrived, defying fans’ expectations and eliciting mixed reviews. The eight-episode series reimagines the 1999 cult favorite film, which received praise and skepticism from early critics.
The new adaptation now has a 30% critical rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is lower than the 54% for the original film but higher than its direct-to-video sequel. Despite the series’ lackluster critical reaction, industry analysts warn against jumping to conclusions, suggesting it may achieve popularity comparable to its predecessor.
Savannah Lee Smith and Sarah Catherine Hook star in the modern rendition, taking up parts previously played by Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair. The series respects the original while striving to provide a new perspective for modern audiences.

The new Prime Video series Cruel Intentions has just premiered, and while its not a sequel or remake of the 1999 movie of the same name, its left a question whether any of the movies cast would ever appear in the show. Entertainment Weekly reports that Cruel Intentions co-showrunner Sara Goodman would consider bringing back original film star Selma Blair to play Cecile if theres a place for the iconic character in a potential Season 2.
Blair played Cecile Caldwell in 1999s Cruel Intentions, a take on the classic novel Dangerous Liaisons, a role that featured a memorable kiss with Sarah Michelle Gellar. The Amazon shows executive producer, Phoebe Fisher, said its possible that Blairs character could join the cast if we get a second season.

The new Prime Video series, Cruel Intentions, takes the basic outline of the 1999 film of the same name and expands it to an eight episode story, with plenty of room for future seasons to tell even more tales of depravity, sexual manipulation, gaslighting, and all of the other devilishly fun things that are strictly off-limits in real life.
Cruel Intentions is set at Manchester College, a place that turns young aristocrats into politicians. In a school full of deliciously irredeemable personalities, two characters stand out: Beatrice and Annie, played by Brooke Lena Johnson and Savannah Lee Smith, respectively. Beatrice is an activist railing against the old-fashioned and, in her opinion, outdated "Greek system" of frat and sorority houses. When co-showrunners Sara Goodman and Phoebe Fisher started adapting “Cruel Intentions” into a series for Prime Video, taking out the sexual tension between the central step-siblings wasn’t even a thought in their mind.
“It never even crossed our minds not to have [that relationship],” Fisher told TheWrap, with Goodman adding “part of what’s appealing about this … is we just ignored … a little bit [of] the rules of today. There’s no social media, and no one’s good or bad. Step siblings are still hot.”
Based on the 1999 classic film of the same name as well as 1988’s “Dangerous Liaisons,” the Prime Video series maintains the DNA of its predecessors, centering on a cruel deal between step siblings Caroline Merteuil (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Lucien Belmont (Zac Burgess) for Lucien to seduce naive newcomer Annie Grover (Savannah Lee Smith). In exchange, Caroline promises Lucien he can finally have what he wants: her.

In the late 1990s, “Cruel Intentions” hit theaters, adapting Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ classic novel into a fabulously scandalous teen drama. Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, and Reese Witherspoon became immediate stars after creating a picture that captured the raw, deceptive spirit of young, wealthy socialites. Prime Video has decided to revive this iconic narrative, moving its DNA from Manhattan’s exclusive prep school world to the ruthless landscape of Washington, D.C.’s Manchester College.
The 2024 remake reimagines the original’s central relationships through the viewpoint of contemporary collegiate Greek life. Caroline Merteuil and Lucien Belmont, step-siblings, are in the center, operating with the same precise precision as their predecessors. Caroline, the cruel Delta Phi sorority president, and Lucien, Alpha Gamma fraternity treasurer, uphold the heritage of psychological warfare and sexual exploitation.
This time, the stakes are higher than just a teenager’s reputation; they now entail political power.

The Cruel Intentions franchise has expanded to streaming with a TV show based on the 1999 movie, but despite borrowing its premise, the show has a very different ending. The Cruel Intentions TV show follows Caroline Merteuil (Sarah Catherine Hook) and Lucien Belmont (Zac Burgess), wealthy step-siblings attending college in Washington D.C. Caroline is the President of the Delta Phi fraternity, while Lucien is the treasurer of Alpha Gamma. When both fraternities face a student movement that aims to end all fraternities, Caroline sets her eyes on Annie Grover (Savannah Lee Smith), the Vice Presidents daughter.
As Lucien is into seducing fellow students and sleeping with them (and videotaping their encounters), Caroline proposes a bet to him involving Annie. Meanwhile, at Alpha Gamma, the fraternitys social chair, Blaise (John Harlan Kim), is conducting his own plan to save himself by manipulating the fraternitys President.

In its 240 years, Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ once scandalous (and at one point, banned) 1782 novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses’ has been adapted around 30 times for various stage, radio, and screen productions across five continents. Yet for many, Roger Kumble’s Cruel Intentions has remained one of its most popular retellings.
The 1999 movie spin on a pair of lovers-turned-rivals who destroy each other through their cruel manipulations of the unsuspecting French aristocracy reimagines the unscrupulous members of the French nobility into two competitive (and sexually enamored) teenage step-siblings, Kathryn (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Sebastian (Ryan Phillippe). As part of a jealousy-driven bet that begins with ruining their new classmate Cecile (Selma Blair), the duo finds the stakes of their contest flamed by the arrival of the disarmingly kind and principled Annette (Reese Witherspoon), the daughter of their affluent Upper East Side high school’s headmaster.

Prime Video’s Cruel Intentions (2024) is yet another modern retelling of the French novel Les Liaisons dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. Frankly, if we’re being serious, it’s really a remake of the Roger Kumble film of the same name, starring Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and Selma Blair, which came out a quarter of a century ago.
