Boonie Bears: Future Reborn review – kiddie Chinese eco-fable is like Mad Max on mushrooms
George Michael
The ursine protagonists are largely relegated to fart-gag sidekicks in this phoned-in attempt at a dystopian sci-fi

When George Michael recorded Careless Whisper, there can be no doubt his ultimate ambition for it would have been to soundtrack a garish animated sequence in which two anthropomorphic bears gambol through a prairie of giant fungus experiencing ecstatic visions as hallucinogenic spores rain down on them. Such is the frantic way of this Chinese cartoon franchise, as relentless and exhausting as ever in its 11th feature-film instalment. Five minutes in, before the credits, it has crammed in a post-apocalyptic prologue, oodles of eco-babble, a time-travelling tyke and an avalanche.

This latest one jumps on the fungal-panic bandwagon: Saylor (voiced by Nicola Vincent in the English-language version) has nipped back 100 years to locate the original spores at the root of a pestilence that has eradicated most of life on Earth. It turns out...

‘My Fault: London 2’ Sequel Theories: Will It Be The Same As ‘Your Fault’?
Image
Stepping into My Fault: London, I wondered why they would make a remake of a globally popular movie so soon after its success. But the film makes subtle changes that definitely bring a newness to the story, more specifically for what’s coming next. There is one major difference between My Fault: London and Culpa Mia: Nick isn’t estranged from his mother. Here’s your spoiler warning for Culpa Tuya if you haven’t seen that one. In the Spanish films, Nick is estranged from his biological mother but close to his younger sister, who he believes is a half-sister. In My Fault: London, Nick and his mom are close, and she isn’t at all the glamorous mother we see in the Spanish films. She’s a recovering alcoholic, and though Nick doesn’t appreciate what she did, leaving him at the tender age of 12, I...

Ash Ketchum May Be Gone, But Pokémon's New Champion Is No Pushover
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Pokémon Horizons, episode #79Pokémon Horizons has brought Liko and Roy's journey to a critical point, forcing them to face off against the Paldea region's top champion, Geeta, if they're to enter the forbidden land of Area Zero. The series' new heroes will have to push themselves to the limit if they're to achieve their goals, and Geeta will be the ultimate judge.

Fans have gotten to see the champions of every previous region compete in the Masters' Eight Tournament, but as the 9th generation's local champion, Geeta wasn't included in this global face-off. While Geeta has appeared in Pokémon Horizons before, this episode marked the first time that fans got to see her battling prowess on display, and she proved in dramatic fashion that she's just as challenging as any other champion-tier trainer out there, even in the unusual triple battle format. Geeta put Liko, Roy, and Dot's resolve to the test,...

The group agreed to meet up with Briar and attempt to enter Area Zero, which will require special permission from the League. Culpa Tuya Review: The Art of Balancing Light and Dark
Image
Audiences are drawn back into the complicated world of step-sibling romance in Culpa Tuya (Your Fault), the provocative continuation of the film. This Spanish drama explores the themes of forbidden love, jealousy, and complicated family ties, aiming to bring back the youthful appeal that made the previous one a hit on Prime Video.

Culpa Tuya mainly addresses a young adult audience with contemporary cultural anxieties surrounding relationships and societal expectations. Although its narrative may not be as innovative as that of filmmakers like Godard or Gerwig, it still engages with the changes in romantic storytelling that have occurred in recent years.

With fast-paced editing that mirrors the chaos of the character’s lives, the film visually captures the opulence of its settings. The soundtrack has a youthful vibe that resonates with the audience, strengthening the emotional experience. By creating a narrative that examines the tension between love and societal norms,...

Image
My Fault also known by its Spanish title, Mia Culpa is a new-age romantic drama film that chronicles the lives of two youngsters. These two have their ups and downs before they fall in love with each other. The main obstacle they faced was their parents who were against Nick and Noah’s forbidden romantic relationship, which formed the crux of the film. Your Fault or Culpa Tuya is a sequel to this film and a continuation of the romantic relationship between the youngsters who are forced to keep their newfound love a secret from their families. The trajectory of their relationship is covered in the story of Culpa Tuya.

‘Our Fault’ Movie Theories: What To Expect From ‘My Fault 3’ Or ‘Culpa Nuestra’?
Image
In Your Fault’s ending, Noah visits her dad’s grave and sees a sweet message from Nick. This probably makes her realize that she still wants to be with him even after all that they’ve been through together. If you liked My Fault at all, I bet you found Your Fault super disappointing. The second movie is both more tedious and feels more removed from reality than I’d have liked. There’s something quite ridiculous about the whole thing, but I guess that’s what YA media’s come to these days. Of course, this film forces the protagonists to think twice about their choices, pulling them apart, hence the interesting title, going from blaming oneself to blaming the other. Sure, Nick does tell Noah it’s her fault they’re separating because she’s cheated, but he forgets to consider that he kissed Sofia first. This...

Your Fault Movie Ending Explained: What Becomes of Nick and Noah’s Relationship?
Gabriel Guevara and Nicole Wallace in À contre-sens (2023)
My Fault (Culpa mía) might not be a cinematic masterpiece or a film with heavy themes, but it certainly captured hearts and gained a devoted fan following. If you’re not familiar with it, the original film follows the story of Nick and Noah, two teens from wealthy, privileged backgrounds who fall deeply in love. However, their relationship faces a major obstacle when their parents strongly oppose it. The reason is that Nick and Noah are technically step-siblings. Noah’s mother, Rafaella, is married to William, Nick’s father, making their love story anything but allowed. Despite their parents’ disapproval and numerous attempts to keep them apart, Nick and Noah’s love prevails. Now, a year later, Your Fault, directed by Domingo González, explores more of Nick and Noah’s love story, probing whether their relationship remains strong enough to withstand their parents’ continued efforts to tear them apart. Nick insists that he has changed,...

‘Your Fault’ Movie Review: ‘My Fault’ Sequel Is Pretty Much A Snoozefest
Image
I was not familiar with Mercedes Ron’s ‘Culpables’ trilogy before watching My Fault, and the film was not intriguing enough for me to take an interest in the books. It did not come as a surprise that the trilogy was first published on Wattpad before Penguin Random House picked it up. There will always be an audience for forbidden, and often cringe, romance, and the success of My Fault was somewhat expected. I personally thought the involvement of a minor with an adult could’ve been avoided, considering the popularity of the trilogy among its young audience. While navigating the thin line between what’s morally right and what’s not is precisely the point of forbidden love, defending it, or treating it as the ultimate act of rebellion, or even glorifying it, is possibly not the path one ought to take when dealing with such sensitive/debatable subject matter.

‘Your Fault’ Movie Ending Explained & Summary: Will Nick And Noah Get Back Together?
Image
Noah and Nick’s sensual forbidden relationship in My Fault garnered quite an audience. Some swooned over the romance while others gushed about the sensual lovemaking scenes. Either way, My Fault was crowned an entertainer by most. The sequel, Your Fault, is based on the second part of director and author Mercedes Ron’s trilogy known as the ‘Culpables Saga.’ While the first film was about how Nick and Noah fell madly in love, the sequel focuses on whether or not they would choose each other given their circumstances. A year had passed since Noah’s father, Jonas, was killed by the police after he abducted his daughter for money. Noah struggled to cope with the death of her father, and she also had a tough time because Nick was not there by her side to help her heal. He was sent to San Francisco for an internship at a law firm.

This Apocalyptic Dark Fantasy Comic Reimagines A Classic Disney Fairy Tale
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Ah, the public domain. It's what allows reinterpretations of classical stories in radically new contexts, hence the recent wave of slasher films starring children's characters like Winnie the Pooh. Twisting fairy tales is not only the domain of movies, though.

See the comic "Briar" — written by Christopher Cantwell, drawn by Germán García, and published by Boom! Studios. The comic is "Sleeping Beauty" as dark fantasy, not the whimsical and romantic kind. "Sleeping Beauty" is a tale that goes back to the 1300s, but "Briar" might be its most violent and irreverent retelling. The comic's title is taken from Briar Rose, the name the Brothers Grimm gave the Princess and which Disney then used in its animated adaptation.

The comic has been advertised as "What if Sleeping Beauty never got her happily ever after?" Here, the prince never bestowed true love's kiss,...

Warning: Spoilers for Pokmon Horizons episode #68

Pokmon Horizons saw the Brave Olivine down for repairs for quite a while, putting the series' globetrotting premise on hold while Liko, Roy, and Dot entered a special course at Naranja Academy to help learn how to master the mysterious power of Terastallization. However, the Brave Olivine is finally taking to the skies again, and their next destination is one that could really use the added focus: the Land of Kitakami.

The Land of Kitakami is an area of the Pokmon world first introduced in the Teal Mask Dlc to Pokmon Scarlet and Violet. It's a rural area located in the Pokmon equivalent of Japan, which has a single town, as well as a temple dedicated to a group of Legendary Pokmon known as the Loyal Three. Aside from seeing some familiar faces, Kitakami seems to also be the home of the next member of the Six Heroes,...

Spy X Family's Yor Forger Character Guide

In fact, all three members of the Forger found family unit are heartfelt and surprisingly realistic people desite how outlandish and cartoony their adventures are, with Loid and Yor each having sympathetic insecurities and hopes about being new parents.

That is especially true for Yor, who never expected to become a wife or mother at this age, yet here she is, the proud mother of little Anya Forger. On top of that, Yor has a relatable work life in Berlint and is a bit self-conscious of her elite skills, proving that no matter how widely feared she is as the Thorn Princess, Yor Forger is a vulnerable and lovable person just under the surface.

While this has given the show the chance to feature many characters from the Scarlet and Violet video games, the plot surrounding Laqua and the Six Heroes was effectively put on pause for most of the arc, slowing the story down significantly.

EC Comics brand is being revived by Oni Press
Image
Founded by Maxwell Gaines in 1944, the Entertaining Comics brand (a.k.a. EC Comics) initially specialized in educational comics and stories aimed at children. But after Gaines died in a boating accident in ’47, his 25-year-old son William took control of the company and changed its direction, exploring the genres of horror, sci-fi, and satire while bringing us classic titles like Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, The Haunt of Fear, Weird Science, Weird Fantasy, and Mad. Sadly, EC Comics was at its peak when parents started to worry about the negative effects reading comic books could have on their children, leading to things like a Congressional hearing that blamed comic books for juvenile delinquency – a claim that was backed up by the book Seduction of the Innocent, written by psychiatrist Fredric Wertham. So by 1956, EC Comics ceased publishing all of their titles except for Mad. Those classic EC...

After 70 Years, EC Comics Returns from the Crypt in Oni Press Deal
Image
In the early 1950s, EC Comics was the bad boy of comic publishers. Its comics such as Tales From the Crypt, Weird Science and Two-Fisted Tales sold millions in mid-century America. Unfortunately, its stories — at times shocking, horrifying, and even progressive — also drew scrutiny and backlash, and the company found itself in the cross hairs of censorship and regulation at the height of the McCarthy era. The company ultimately shuttered, with the last comic hitting newsstands and drug stores in 1956.

Now, seventy years after the creation of the self-regulatory body Comics Code Authority, the infamous comics company is blasting out of the crypt and returning with a brand new line of comics.

Oni Press, the publisher perhaps best known for the breakout indie hit Scott Pilgrim, has partnered with William M. Gaines Agent, Inc., the rights holders of the EC line, to launch all-new stories with A-list comics creators beginning this summer.

One Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Dlc Character Might Actually Be A Criminal
Image
One of the characters in the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Dlc may have committed a crime by taking sacred water from Kitakami's Crystal Pool without permission. The protagonist of the game does not react to the questionable morality of the Terarium Core invention, which may have been built using stolen water from the Crystal Pool. Briar, the character who potentially stole the water, faces no consequences for her actions, and it remains unclear if she will need to collect more water in the future.

One of the characters introduced in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet’s Dlc could be an actual criminal going by what is seen of their actions. Despite the range of criminal organizations seen throughout the franchise, more recent Pokémon titles have moved away from having evil Teams and more towards featuring misunderstood rebels and outcasts (although primary antagonists can still have more threatening intentions). However, it is...

Next of Kin: The Best Movie You Never Saw
Image
The passing of Patrick Swayze was enough to break your heart. Has there ever really been anyone quite like him? At his best, Swayze was the type of guy who was equally at home playing romantic leads as he was dropping bad guys in action fare. Swayze’s career peaked in 1987, the year he danced his way to the top of the box office in Dirty Dancing. It made him a giant star, with him not only having one of the top-grossing movies of the year but also a huge hit song in a track off the soundtrack album, “She’s Like the Wind”.

While traditional thinking would have led to Swayze acting in a whole slew of romantic movies, he had something a little different in mind. Swayze wanted to become an action hero. The fact is, he was a natural for the genre. His dance training and general...

How To Evolve Tyrogue Into Hitmontop, Hitmonchan & Hitmonlee (Pokémon S&v Indigo Disk Dlc)
Image
One of the most exciting Pokémon you can catch in Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Indigo Disk Dlc is Tyrogue. Not only is this Pokémon a fighting type, making it a solid choice in battle, but it also evolves into three other well-known Pokémon. Tyrogue evolves into Hitmontop, Hitmonchan, and Hitmonlee, which explains why trainers are scouring the Terrarium for this elusive Pokémon and its iconic evolutions.

However, when it comes to Tyrogue's evolutions, things can get a little complicated. If you want to get a specific version of its evolution, you'll need a Tyrogue with the appropriate stats. This may appear troubling at first, but it's a far easier process than evolving some of the other Pokémon in the game, such as how to evolve Milcery into Alcremie.

Joker Is Gotham's Most Tragic Villain (Because His Madness Can Be Cured)
Image
The Joker can be cured of his madness through a technological procedure, as shown in the Marvel and DC crossover comic Spider-Man and Batman #1. The procedure completely removes the Joker's homicidal urges, reducing him to a scared child. The Joker is rendered harmless and expresses no interest in harming others. While the Joker has been cured of his insanity multiple times in the past, it is important to find the right circumstances for a successful cure. The crossover comic proves that it is possible to cure the Joker under the right conditions.

The Joker is more than just a threat to Gotham City: he's also a true tragic figure. It was proved — in a 1990s crossover issue, no less — that the Joker, if given the proper medical treatment, can be cured of his madness once and for all.

The Joker's cure is detailed in the Marvel and DC crossover Spider-Man and Batman #1 by J.M. DeMatteis,...

"You Get the Joke!": Joker Is Only Evil Because a Marvel Villain Corrupted Him
Image
The Joker was once cured of his insanity and became harmless, but was re-corrupted by Marvel's Carnage. Carnage's interference prevents the Joker from re-entering society as a reformed individual. Without Carnage, the Joker could potentially be a sane and regretful person, as shown in previous examples.

Despite being one of DC's most dangerours villains, the Joker was once cured of his insanity entirely and was almost ready to re-enter society as a productive citizen who would never hurt a fly. Unfortunately, this redemption arc was prevented, and the Joker was re-corrupted by Carnage, Marvel's most terrifying serial killer.

The Joker's Carnage-caused corruption takes place in the classic team-up story Spider-Man and Batman #1 by J.M. DeMatteis, Mark Bagley, Scott Hanna, Mark Farmer, Electric Crayon, and Richard Starkings. In this story, Cletus Kasady and the Joker are both cured of their murderous insanity by Dr. Briar and her bio-technic chip, which she inserts into their brains.

Image
Stars: Danell Leyva, Victoria Vertuga, Jamie Bernadette, Torrey B. Lawrence | Written and Directed by Eric Williford

At the start of Cold Blows the Wind, Dean and Tasha look in the trunk of their car and are surprised to find a badly injured man. They’re surprised not because he’s there, but because they thought they killed him when Tasha hit him while driving drunk. Realising he isn’t dead Tasha wants to get him to a hospital while Dean is worried once what happens gets out they’ll go to jail. To avoid that he takes the only logical course of action and stabs the man to death. Tasha reluctantly helps him bury the body.

Writer/director Eric Williford and cinematographer Marc Martinez give us a striking burial scene full of moonlight and mist as the couple squabble while digging the grave. And as they do, someone is watching them,...

Joker's Folk Horror Redesign Somehow Makes Him Even Creepier
Image
In Harley Quinn: Black + White + Redder #5, Joker and Harley are reimagined as medieval performers in a folk horror tale. This anthology series challenges artists to use a limited palette, and Bilquis Evely's attention to detail and Matheus Lopes' colorist experience bring the story to life. Harley Quinn: Black + White + Redder #5 is coming November 21 from DC Comics.

In the upcoming Harley Quinn: Black + White + Redder #5, Harley and Joker's 'love story' is reimagined with the two as medieval performers. And while Joker doesn't appear to be a murderous villain in this reality, he does somehow get even creepier thanks to a period-appropriate new look.

In a preview of Matheus Lopes and Bilquis Evely's 'The Harley Spirit,' fans meet a Joker and Harley who make their living as traveling performers. Sadly for the Clown Prince of Crime, he's unable to get a laugh with his act, and takes out the failure on his assistant.

How Did Pokémon’s Loyal Three Come Back To Life In The Teal Mask Dlc?
Image
The resurrection of the Loyal Three in The Teal Mask Dlc is still a mystery, but there are intriguing clues surrounding their revival. Kieran's emotional connection to the Loyal Three and his possession of the Teal Mask with Tera Crystals may have played a significant role. The Loyal Three's revival raises questions about Tera Energy and the potential for it to turn imagination into reality, hinting at the true nature of Tera Crystals.

Although Pokémon Scarlet and Violet do not explicitly state how the Loyal Three are resurrected in The Teal Mask, the surrounding events do offer some intriguing clues. As Legendaries, the Loyal Three are major figures among the Pokémon newly added in this Dlc, but their appearance is as strange as it is impactful. And although more answers may be forthcoming when The Indigo Disk releases, for now there is still much mystery surrounding the Loyal Three of Kitakami.

Batman Comics Need To Bring Back Alfred's Secret Twin Brother
Image
Comic books love to introduce long-lost family members as plot twists, and Batman's butler Alfred Pennyworth's forgotten brother needs to make a return. Alfred's cloned brother, who is technically DC's first Dark Knight, was introduced in All-Star Batman #14 but hasn't been seen since. This is a missed opportunity for a dangerous villain for the Bat-Family. With Alfred dead, the return of his evil clone would add chaos to Gotham and create a compelling Batman villain, especially since the clone defeated Batman in their previous encounters.

One of the major plot tropes comic books love to use is that of the long-lost family member. From Spider-Man's sister to Batman's boomerang-hurling older brother, comics aren't shy about bringing back old family members — which is exactly why Alfred Pennyworth's long-forgotten brother needs to make a return.

Comic books love to bring out the long-lost relative for a good plot twist. It's been done with Daredevil,...

Before Batman, His Butler Alfred Was DC's Original Dark Knight
Image
The Dark Knight is a title that everyone knows is held by Batman, but long before Bruce Wayne took up the cowl, another person trained to be the first Dark Knight. Surprisingly, that person was none other than Alfred Pennyworth, the Wayne Family's trusted butler.

Batman trained for years to become the vigilante that he is. He traveled the world and learned from the best of the best. His extensive training is what makes Bruce such a capable superhero, able to either out-fight or out-plan any opponent he comes up against. However, in All-Star Batman #11 - by Scott Snyder, Rafael Albuquerque, Jordie Bellaire and Steve Wands - it's revealed that Alfred trained with a secret organization to become a similarly effective solo hero.

Alfred Spent Years As The Dark Knight

While Batman and Alfred are looking for an item called the Genesis Engine, Batman continually runs into a dangerous enemy,...

Shanghai Film Festival: China’s Growing Animation Sector Takes Center Stage
Image
The spotlight will be shining both on what’s happening in Chinese animation right now and on what is about to emerge from the genre as the 25th Shanghai International Film Festival, which opened Friday, plays out until June 18.

The festival’s main Golden Goblet Awards have lined up five films from five countries for its Animation Film section, and they include the hotly anticipated Master Zhong from Chinese streamer iQiYi. The film takes its place in the competition alongside the Iran-Turkey co-production Dolphin Boy (directed by Mohammad Kheirandish), Hungary’s Four Souls Of Coyote (Aron Gauder), Gonta: The Story Of The Two-Named Dog In The Fukushima Disaster (Akio Nishizawa) from Japan and the Belgium-France-Spain effort The Inseparables (Jérémie Degruson).

Master Zhong taps into a much-loved character from archives of Chinese mythology but gives the demon-slaying titular hero a YA-savvy contemporary twist by pairing him with a young woman taking...

Le gardien de la cité perdue (2023)
Boonie Bears: Guardian Code review – smash-hit Chinese animation tells an eco tale
Le gardien de la cité perdue (2023)
With its two adorable bears, this formulaic kids’ tale tells its environmentally conscious story with plenty of warmth but few surprises

The ninth feature in a hugely popular Chinese animated series directed by Lin Yongchang and Shao Heqi, Boonie Bears: Guardian Code is also the franchise’s highest-grossing film, second behind The Wandering Earth 2 as the biggest Chinese film of 2023 so far. With its two main characters Bramble and Briar, adorable bears who were abandoned by their mother in a forest fire, this environmentally conscious adventure is an entertaining, if rather formulaic, ride.

For lovers of cute animals, the CGI designs of the brothers are quite lovely and detailed, though not exactly distinctive. Goofy and optimistic Bramble believes that their mother is out there searching for them, but Briar holds no such hope. However, a chance encounter with Charlotte, an aspiring scientist, promises a new clue that would lead...

China’s Animation Sector Is Drawing Up Plans to Conquer the Global Market
Image
There were two bigger box office hits in China over the Lunar New Year, but the returns enjoyed by Boonie Bears: Guardian Code may, in hindsight, turn out to be the result that actually points to an emerging trend in Chinese cinema.

The country’s animation industry is certainly hoping so.

In collecting an estimated $136 million (Rmb 924 million) over its eight-day festive-season run, the ninth installment of the Boonie Bears franchise found itself tucked in behind two blockbusters: veteran helmer Zhang Yimou’s period thriller Full River Red, collector of an estimated $465 million (Rmb 3.16 billion), and Frank Guo’s sci-fi sequel The Wandering Earth 2 with $378 million (Rmb 2.57 billion).

But the bigger picture is how the film held its own against two such high-profile releases on its way to a total of more than $220 million (Rmb 1.5 billion), and amid reports that it had been sold to a slew of international markets,...

‘Aew Dark: Elevation – Episode 108’ Review
Image
Welcome back to another review of Aew Dark: Elevation, which features just matches this week. We’ve got regulars Paul Wight and Matt Menard on commentary as usual. So let’s get into the review!

Match #1: Tony Nese and Ari Daivari def. Lane Summers and Campbell Myers

My Thoughts: This was an incredibly dull opening match and a squash match at that too. Nese and Daivari are, unfortunately, pretty much charisma-free and that doesn’t help their matches in the slightest; and with this match we didn’t even get any words from Mark Sterling to cover that fact up!

My Score: 1 out of 5 Match #2: Nyla Rose and Marina Shafir def. Briar and Sage Hale

My Thoughts: This was another squash match from the team of Rose and Shafir. Interestingly, Jon Moxley revealed on a podcast this week that he’s been working with Shafir to try and...

Image
Rachel Bilson is adding some clarification to headline-making sexual revelation she shared.

Earlier this month, the actress revealed on her “Broad Ideas” podcast that she wasn’t able to experience her first orgasm from penetrative intercourse until the age of 38.

“Isn’t that crazy?” she asked her guest, Whitney Cummings.

The conversation began from Cummings, who explained that her first orgasm from sex was after she stopped taking her birth control pills.

“I could do it with my hands whenever,” she explained.

Bilson agreed with the sentiment, “Of course, yeah. But not from, like, d–k inside.”

Cummings explained the circumstances that led her to finally climax from the experience, noting, “He had a straight dick, and I’ve been told my uterus was tilted, and to me, sex always feels best when you’re on your period.
