Toward the end of his 2023 HBO comedy special From Bleak to Dark, Marc Maron tells the audience a high-wire joke he’s been working on since his partner, the director Lynn Shelton, died in 2020 from a rare blood disease.

It starts with Maron on the way to the hospital to say goodbye to Shelton after a doctor arranges for the comedian to see her body. When Maron gets there, he takes his time saying goodbye. As he’s walking out of the ICU, he stops to consider a thought: “Selfie?” he asks himself. “No,” he finally decides. Most of the audience laughs immediately, but a few gasp before succumbing to their chuckles. It’s the kind of blunt and slightly scandalous humor Maron has built his career on, but it’s also textured with something rare for the comedian: a tender emotional awareness.

The Hacks season four trailer is loaded with hilarious Deborah Vance and Ava clips. The minute-and-a-half trailer captures the dysfunctional relationship between the two and teases their on-and-off partnership won’t be any less tumultuous in the upcoming season.

Hacks is back — and earlier than ever before. Season 4 of the Emmy-winning comedy will premiere with two episodes on April 10 at 9 p.m. Et/Pt, Max announced Tuesday, along with a trailer.

The rest of the 10-episode season will roll out with a single episode on Thursdays for four weeks, then Episodes 7 and 8 on May 15, Episode 9 on May 22, and the season finale on May 29 — right before the May 31 Emmy eligibility deadline. That's a tweak from previous seasons when the show would debut in May and air double episodes every week.

Max has released the trailer and key art for the fourth season of “Hacks,” which debuts with a dual episode premiere on April 10 at 6 p.m. Pt.

The official logline for Season 4 reads, “Tensions rise as Deborah (Jean Smart) and Ava (Hannah Einbinder) endeavor to get their late-night show off the ground and make history doing it.”

In the trailer, we see Deborah and Ava walk out of a conference room, tensions boiling between them. “Well, aren’t you a big brave girl?” Deborah sneers. “I guess I am. It’s for the best,” Ava quips back. Deborah looks Ava directly in the eyes before calmly responding, “We’ll see.”

The fourth season of Hacks will join the crowded spring TV calendar as a number of shows set dates to get in under the wire of Emmy eligibility.

The Max comedy, which is the defending best comedy winner at the Emmys, will premiere April 10. The 10-episode season will follow Deborah (Jean Smart) and Ava (Hannah Einbinder) as they work to get their late-night show up and running amid rising tensions between the two of them. Max also released a trailer for the coming season, which is below.

In order to make the full season Emmy-eligible, Hacks will have a somewhat odd release schedule: Two episodes will stream on April 10, followed by one a week for four weeks afterward. Episodes seven and eight will both premiere on May 15, with the final two installments of the season coming May 22 and May 29. (The Emmy eligibility deadline for this year’s awards is May 31.)

“Hacks” Season 4 is picking up right where Season 3 left off: with Deborah and Ava on the edge of war. The latest installment of the Emmy-winning Max original comedy will premiere with its first two episodes on April 10.

“Well aren’t you a big, brave girl,” Deborah (Jean Smart) menacingly says in the new trailer out Tuesday, rounding on her prodigy.

“I guess I am,” Ava (Hannah Einbinder) replies. “It’s for the best.”

The clip then cuts between several high-energy scenes, from Deborah dancing in a club to both Deborah and Ava driving literal race cars. Kaitlin Olson’s very pregnant DJ can even be seen briefly weightlifting.

“Blackmail on day one? Not good!” Deborah and Ava’s manager Jimmy (Paul W. Downs) yells. “She’s been doing this for 50 years. You’re not going to beat her at her own game. Nobody beats Deborah.” Maybe, not yet.

Odin’s Eye Entertainment has announced at EFM a deal with Paris-based Soyouz Productions for French-language remake rights on Dane Clark and Linsey Stewart’s 2023 Canadian comedy drama Suze.

The original Suze stars Michaela Watkins as a woman who takes care of her daughter’s heartbroken ex-boyfriend when her daughter leaves for university. It was produced by Wildling Pictures and was released in the US by Tribeca Films in February 2024.

The French version will be directed by Benoît Pétré and will shoot in the autumn, with delivery in 2026.

If nothing else, Heart Eyes proves that the slasher genre is nothing if not adaptable. Director Josh Ruben and writers Christopher Landon, Michael Kennedy, and Phillip Murphy have taken the traditional rom-com formula and laced it with blood, guts, and knowing winks to both genres, delivering a film that is as charming as it is chaotic. While the horror elements feel more functional than inventive, the film shines as a witty, self-aware send-up of rom-com conventions—right down to its contrived meet-cutes and sweeping, albeit blood-soaked, declarations of love.

At the centre of the carnage are Ally (Olivia Holt) and Jay (Mason Gooding), two advertising professionals pitted against each other in a Valentine’s Day marketing campaign. Holt plays Ally as a cynical career woman recovering from a breakup, while Gooding’s Jay is the affable romantic who challenges her jaded outlook. Every horror film needs a good boogeyman, and the monstrous maniac at the centre of Heart Eyes is a great one. Striking every Valentine’s Day, the Heart Eyes Killer (the police and media dub him Hek) kills only couples, his huge, heart-shaped peepers doubling as night vision goggles (cue Silence Of The Lambs-y pov shots but bathed in red) and his weapon of choice a crossbow that fires deadly cupid’s arrows. He provides a fantastic nemesis in Josh Ruben’s (Werewolves Within) tremendously knowing, fun romp that mashes up romcoms and horror slasher movies and playfully decides the two genres have more in common than you think.

Directed by Josh Ruben, Heart Eyes is a darkly comic Valentines-themed slasher with considerable franchise potential. To that end, it’s co-scripted by some of the writers behind the likes of Freaky and Happy Death Day 2U, so the filmmakers have a degree of cachet, slasher-wise.

Rising star Olivia Holt (Cloak & Dagger) plays Seattle ad campaign designer Ally McCabe, who’s forced to work alongside high-flying rival Jay Simmonds (Mason Gooding) after a Valentine’s-themed work disaster. Unfortunately, their work-related proximity puts them squarely in the sights of the Heart Eyes Killer, a murderer with a heart eyes mask who targets couples every Valentine’s Day.

Sony’s new R-rated horror thriller Heart Eyes has landed at the #2 spot in the domestic box office chart as projected. However, the film earned lower than the predicted opening weekend range. Its lack of star power and being released on the Super Bowl weekend might be one of the reasons for an underwhelming weekend despite showing promise with its release-day collection. The movie was directed by Josh Ruben, who has directed Scare Me and Werewolves Within. It is a romantic comedy slasher with a B- rating on CinemaScore.

According to Luiz Fernando’s report, Heart Eyes collected only $8.5 million on its three-day opening weekend, whereas it was predicted to earn between $11 million and $14 million. It is 22.7-39.3% less than the expected prediction.

I have to confess I was pretty skeptical about Linsey Stewart and Dane Clark’s film, Suze. From its outset, it sounded like yet another tired, derivative rehash built around a mother who is confronted with great change when her daughter leaves for university. Gradually, the film skids past any of this predictable, generic fatigue with its keen, tender, and deeply connected gaze on character growth and dynamics. The filmmakers craft a tale aglow with sincerity and sparkling emotion, carried by a central duo armed with immediate, winning chemistry.

Brooke ( Sara Waisglass) has a raging romance going on with Gage (Charles Gillespie), a drifter whose apparent lack of ambition and disinterest in anything resembling a career incurs the disfavor of her single mom, Suze ( Michaela Watkins). Suze advises her daughter to break up with Gage, reminding her they are people with entirely different trajectories and that continuing the relationship wouldn’t be a wise idea.

Throughout Josh Ruben’s brilliant new Valentine’s Day slasher “Heart Eyes,” potential suspects and would-be victims reference real romantic comedies. “My Best Friend’s Wedding.” “Crazy Stupid Love.” “Pretty Woman.” Whatever your preferred chick flick — combined with the predator-prey mania of “My Bloody Valentine” (and just a touch of the goofiness in “Scream 6”) — that should be enough to compel you toward this giddy and graphic whodunit. Silly, slick, and self-aware, the latest farce from the “Werewolves Within” director is laugh-out-loud funny and boasts pops of gore that earn the comparison to Eli Roth’s “Thanksgiving.” Although the killer pilgrim movie from 2023 is more stomach-churning than Ruben’s film, this nutty blend of hyper-violence and one-liners is a dark comedic delicacy.

Now Sony Pictures has found the best idea for the holiday: a romantic comedy slasher. Heart Eyes has all the elements to become a classic date night movie for slasher lovers. Ahead of its Feb. 7 premiere date, Heart Eyes debuted with an exciting Rotten Tomatoes score of 92%.

There’s nothing more appealing in a potential romantic partner than confidence, empathy, and honesty, and much of the success of Heart Eyes is tied to it being abundant in all three. Even while bathing in some of the most tired tropes of both slashers and rom-coms, there’s such a warmth and charm to the whole thing that it can’t help but come off as endearing.

It helps that there’s a walking embodiment of that principle in the form of Jay (Mason Gooding), a consultant brought onboard at an ad company when their creative director, Ally (Olivia Holt), blows an absurd amount of company money on a campaign that recreates famous death sequences from the movies. Ever since the genre was created, the “meet cute” has been a staple of romantic comedies. So it makes sense that in the new “romantic comedy horror film” from director Josh Ruben (Werewolves Within), couples should die cute. Well, not cute exactly, unless you think of spears going through eyeballs or heads being crushed into bloody pulp as cute. Of course, for the target audience of Heart Eyes, that’s exactly what they are. They relish the gruesome deaths, the more graphic the better, the way audiences used to relish spectacular production numbers in musicals.

If movie musicals had their heyday in the 1930s and ‘40s, the equivalent for slasher movies was the 1980s. There’s often a willingness to overcategorize middling slashers as horror comedies. However, balancing true horror with legitimate laughs is far more challenging. However, Heart Eyes pulls off the rare combo. Not only does it deliver legitimate laughs, easily showcasing itself as one of the funniest studio films in recent memory, but it’s got a mean streak few films possess. With plenty of gore and slasher frights, it’s an early standout for horror in 2025.

Heart Eyes — The Plot

Every Valentine’s Day, a masked killer known as the Heart Eyes Killer stalks couples in major cities. As a new killing spree starts up in Seattle, young ad executive Ally (Olivia Holt) kicks off a troubling ad campaign. Her boss (Michaela Watkins) brings in Jay (Mason Gooding), a freelance advertising specialist, to help right the course. As Ally and Jay find themselves at odds with each other, they become hunted by the infamous killer.

While slashers never vanished, seeing a title like Heart Eyes nudge the subgenre toward revived popularity warms my soul. On Feb. 7, the new slasher movie Heart Eyes will make its debut in movie theaters. How well received the film will be remains to be seen, but Devon Sawa thinks the movie's titular killer could become just as iconic as other slasher film icons like Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger.

Heart Eyes tells the story of two co-workers on Valentine's Day who are mistaken for a couple, making them a target of a mysterious murderer. Mostly donning all-black clothing, the killer becomes very recognizable by wearing a mask that has glowing red hearts for eyes. Sawa is one of the stars of the movie, marking his latest horror role after his appearances in Final Destination, Idle Hands, and Chucky. While speaking with Screen Rant about the film, Sawa said that the Heart Eyes killer is "unique" enough to stand out in the genre, potentially becoming a new horror icon.
