The 10 Highest-Grossing Movies of 2024
Image
2024 was a great year for movie fans, delivering a combination of instant classics, blockbuster hits, and well-received sequels, from Nosferatu and Longlegs to Twisters and Alien: Romulus. While some of the year's best movies weren't blockbuster hits, others crossed box office records, delivering fan service and entertainment for various fan bases. The year has been perfect for large franchises.

Although not a surprise, 2024 marks a rarity for Hollywood as a year when all of the US' ten highest-grossing movies are sequels, without exception. From long-awaited superhero team-ups to continuations of iconic family animated movies, the year has raked in billions for major studios, affirming the industry's focus on major franchises. Financial success is no guarantee of quality one way or the other, but the year has produced plenty of successful and entertaining films.

Actors That Fans Didn't Realize Starred in Several 2024 Movies
Image
In another distinctive year for movies, 2024 featured many actors in Hollywood getting very booked and busy. It is typical for an actor to have one or two projects for them to stand out in the year, yet some actors go beyond and star in three or more movies. Because 2024 became crowded with new cinematic features, most viewers didn't realize they saw one actor multiple times.

These actors in 2024 showcased more of their range. They could transition from a spectacular blockbuster to a more character-driven drama or even an animated feature. Acting veterans like Willem Dafoe and Giancarlo Esposito and continuously rising stars such as Margaret Qualley and Fred Hechinger are just a few of several performers who worked extra hard during this particular year.

'Beetlejuice Beetlejuice's Big Musical Number, Explained
Image
When Beetlejuice Beetlejuice hit theaters in late summer, nobody knew if it would connect with audiences like the 1988 original, now a beloved classic. Director Tim Burton and star Michael Keaton didn't want to make some cheap nostalgia-bait sequel, and waited until they had a new story they felt was worth telling. Luckily for everyone involved, it worked. The film was one of the biggest hits of 2024, grossing over $450 million worldwide and reinvigorating audiences' love for the characters. But as much as the creative team didn't want to repeat themselves, some elements from the first film were probably destined to carry over. One such element comes from one of the first movie's most memorable moments: the supernatural lip-sync number.

In the original, the invading Deetz family is possessed into singing and dancing to Harry Belafonte's "Day-o (The Banana Boat Song)" by the recently deceased Maitlands (Geena Davis and Alec Baldwin...

Tim Burton Reveals His Strange and Disturbing Dreams of Getting a Haircut from Donald Trump
Image
Tim Burton is one of the greatest creative minds to have ever worked in Hollywood, and it seems that the only thing wilder than the stories he puts on screen are those that he dreams about. While appearing at the Marrakech Film Festival (via Deadline), Burton was asked during a panel the question of what he dreams about. Apparently, getting a haircut from Donald Trump.

Yes, it seems that the director who masterminded freaky fantasy movies such as Beetlejuice, Sleepy Hollow, and Frankenweenie has been having some very peculiar dreams about the president-elect. As he explained to the press:

“I was at dinner at Donald Trump’s house. He wasn’t living Mar-a-Lago but a suburban house. I needed a haircut, so he personally gave me a haircut. It turned out to be a weird version of like a mullet and his hair and then I woke up.”

It is...

"We wanted to channel that kind of character for Lydia's TV show," she explained, revealing that she "found that dress at a thrift store. 'I Knew It Would Do Well': Michael Keaton Reacts to Beetlejuice 2 Success After Pushing for the Sequel for Years

Beetlejuice 2 Cleverly Explains Why Juno The Case Worker Is Missing From Tim Burtons Sequel - But The Movie Still Honors Her
Image
Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Beetlejuice 2 (2024)!Though her absence was already expected, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice includes a subtle in-universe reason why Juno is missing from the sequel. Very few figures from the original 1988 Beetlejuice movie actually return in Beetlejuice 2s cast, including Betelgeuse himself (Michael Keaton), Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder), Delia Deetz (Catherine OHara), and Little Jane Butterfield (played by Amy Nuttall in the sequel). Therefore, the vast majority of original Beetlejuice characters dont appear in the 2024 movie, such as the Deetzes iconic friend Otho and the Maitlands fan-favorite afterlife case worker Juno.

The absences of both Otho and Juno in Beetlejuice 2 make sense within the context of real-world developments. Junos actress Sylvia Sidney passed away in 1999, with Othos actor Glenn Shadix having passed away in 2010. However, with Juno being a ghost forced to spend eternity as a civil servant, her character realistically could have played a role in the sequels plot.

Does Beetlejuice 2 Live Up to the Original?
Image
Tim Burtons Beetlejuice was released into theaters on March 30, 1988, over 36 years ago. The movie starred Michael Keaton as the titular bio-exorcist along with Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis as a married couple who seek out his services. It also introduced the world to a then-unknown Winona Ryder, playing the iconic Lydia Deetz. It was only the second feature-length theatrical film that Tim Burton had directed at the time, the first being 1985s Pee-Wees Big Adventure, and it was arguably the film that would make Burton a household name.

Beetlejuice helped create and solidify his signature aesthetic, and since its release, it has gone on to be a revered cult classic. Its one of those movies that people have grown up with and then gone on to share with their own kids. For many, it is even a yearly Halloween re-watch, which makes the timing for Burtons upcoming sequel just in...

The Beetlejuice Movies Are Actually About the Horrors of Marriage
Image
If marriage is hell, then Tim Burton has a funny way of showing it in the beloved Beetlejuice movies. With the recent success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, older and newer fans alike have responded well to the wacky horror-comedy sequel 36 years after the original Beetlejuice made the prospect of marriage a legitimate nightmare. Of course, the popular 2024 sequel also revolves around a garish wedding ceremony that features a showstopping musical number, connecting both films through Lydia (Winona Ryder) and Beetlejuice's (Michael Keaton) macabre matrimony.

Yet, upon closer inspection, one could argue that the underlying theme in the Beetlejuice movies equates marriage with death, hell, reincarnation, and other nightmarish qualities that threaten to trap Lydia inside a purgatorial limbo forever. For Burton, Beetlejuice provides an artistic template to critique the horrors of marriage as a business contract devoid of true love, doing so in playfully subliminal ways that somehow remain tender and romantic.

Charles Deetz (who returns as a ghost with his head and shoulders missing after being eaten by a shark) is voiced by a new actor, as Jeffrey Jones doesnt return in Beetlejuice 2, with a grown-up Little Jane Butterfield also playing a supporting role in the sequel. In the original movie, Little Jane Butterfield appeared alongside her mother, Jane Butterfield, who was working...

Everything to Remember About ‘The Gilded Age’ Season 1
Image
We are just days away from Season 2 of HBO’s “The Gilded Age,” and the excitement — at least on IndieWire’s TV team — is palpable. Julian Fellowes’ period drama about New York socialites in the late-19th century returns on October 29, sure to promise more scenery chewing and backstabbing from Christine Baranski, Carrie Coon, Cynthia Nixon, and the rest of the cast.

“The Gilded Age” Season 1 premiered in January 2022, so it’s been some time since viewers caught up with the old-school Upper East Side crew. Who hates whom, who stole someone else’s servant, who accidentally-almost slept with a maid, and who’s hiding their sexuality while pursuing a marriage? Some of it matters, some of it doesn’t — but all of it will be a treat to watch as both high and low drama unfold in Season 2.

Before that, here’s everything to remember about “The Gilded Age...

Lucy Boynton, Will Poulter to Star in Agatha Christie’s ‘Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?’
Image
Lucy Boynton (“Bohemian Rhapsody”) and Will Poulter (“The Revenant”) are set to star in Hugh Laurie’s adaptation of “Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?”, one of Agatha Christie’s earliest murder mystery novels.

Laurie (“House”) is set to direct and act in the three-part series for BritBox North America, in which he plays the creepy Dr. James Nicholson, a clinical director of a sanatorium.

Christie published “Why Didn’t They Ask Evans?”, which follows Bobby (Poulter) and shrewd socialite Lady Frances (Boynton) as they untangle a murder mystery, in 1934. In classic Christie fashion, there are plenty of twists and turns until the perpetrator is finally unmasked.

“I’m so thrilled to be working with Hugh and Will, and on this story from one of my favourite authors,” said Boynton. “I can’t wait to get started.” She won’t have to wait long with production kicking off this week.

Rebecca Ferguson Espionage Drama Despite The Falling Snow Unveils First Trailer
Taking a brief hiatus from blockbuster fare following her eye-catching breakout in last year’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Rebecca Ferguson leads an all-star cast in the first trailer for espionage drama, Despite the Falling Snow.

Written and directed by Shamim Sarif – working from her own 2004 novel, no less – the spy thriller is rooted in the bitter-cold setting of Moscow which, during the late ’50s, was still in the thick of the Cold War. Ferguson plays Lauren, an American agent tasked with going undercover as Katya Grinkova to retrieve Russian military plans deemed crucial by her home country.

But those plans fall onto the back-burner once Ferguson’s lead meets Soviet big wig Alexander Ivanov (Sam Reid), a charming and idealistic politician with whom she strikes up a passionate relationship.

Here’s the official synopsis from Sarif’s novel:

In 1950s Moscow, communist Katya (Rebecca Ferguson) secretly spies for the...

For many actors, Downton Abbey was their first big break in television.

But not everyone can be a Lord Grantham or a Carson. For many - whether they chose to leave or were written out - their fortunes changed after exiting the ITV drama.

1. Ed Speleers

We most recently saw him in the part of Edward Seymour in Wolf Hall, and he will also star in upcoming films Remainder and Howl. Most prominently, he's been cast alongside Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway and Helena Bonham Carter in Alice in Wonderland: Through the Looking Glass.

The Musketeers: Episode 6 review - Mothers, sons and Royal scandal
So cosy and traditional is The Musketeers in many ways that the show needs to work extra hard not to become predictable and staid.

Last week's offering was a little too by-the numbers, but 'The Exiles' - a pacy tale of Royal conspiracy - manages to pepper plenty of decent plot twists throughout, whilst still maintaining that period romp feel.

Instructed by the Cardinal to return a mother and her child to Paris, Aramis (Santiago Cabrera) and D'artagnan (Luke Pasqualino) find themselves seperated when the infant, Henry, is snatched.

Given Aramis' prowess with the ladies, you'd be forgiven for expecting a perfunctory romance plot the moment he's tasked with protecting Amy Nuttall's beautiful widow Agnes.

But thanks to strong performances from Nuttall and Cabrera, and the wise decision not to ever have Agnes leap into the Musketeer's arms, their connection is portrayed as something more meaningful than a fleeting passion.

The Musketeers episode 6 review: The Exiles
Review Rob Kemp 2 Mar 2014 - 22:00

Tara Fitzgerald guest stars in this week's politically themed episode of The Musketeers...

This review contains spoilers.

1.6 The Exiles

After last week’s disappointingly weak instalment, The Musketeers sees both a change in focus and pace in this week’s episode, The Exiles. Gone is the emphasis on fleshing out the Musketeers' back stories, and in its place a political thriller involving a King with mum issues, a King’s mum with king issues and finally – but no means least, a Musketeer with attachment issues.

Despite now being de-shackled from delving into the Musketeers' past, the plot itself doesn’t break any new ground. The King’s mother, Marie de Medici, risks execution by returning to her son after apparent attempts on her life. Elsewhere, D’Artagnan and Aramis are charged with the safe escort of a mother, her son and a priest to the Cardinal for reasons unknown.

SAG Award Nominations Are In- Who Got In? Who Got Snubbed?

2014 Sundance Film Festival Predictions List: An Intro
Kids. Such as Sex, Lies, and Videotape or Reservoir Dogs before it, and such as Winter’s Bone, Blue Valentine and Fruitvale Station after it, Larry Clark & Harmony Korine’s seminal film is forever connected in “spirit” to the lieu where it received its secret midnight premiere screening in 1995. The Sundance Film Festival might be known as the birthplace of U.S indie filmmaking innovation, avant-gardism, a larger definition of the low budgeted film response to Hollywood in not only narrative but in the non-fiction form, but it is a festival made strong by its renewal and familiarity. That close acquaintanceness exists in Kids‘ starlets Rosario Dawson and Chloë Sevigny filmography/career path trajectory and connection to Park City (both have several indie films slated for ’14 – of which I’ve included in our predictions list) and it is that “familiarity” that is visibly noticeable in how I map out my annual predictions list.
