The live-action adaptation of Golden Kamuy is set to continue with a sequel film.

The announcement was made following the airing of the final episode of the Wowow drama series Golden Kamuy: Hokkaido Irezumi Shuzin Soudatsu-hen on Dec 1.

A teaser has been revealed to commemorate the announcement.

The first live-action film premiered in Japanese theaters on Jan 19, 2024. The sequel drama series aired on Wowow on Oct 6.

The creative team behind the drama included directors Kenji Katagiri, Ken Ochiai, and Yosuke Sato, who joined Shigeaki Kubo, the film’s director.

The series also featured music by Yoshiaki Dewa, who collaborated with Yutaka Yamada, the composer of the film.

Golden Kamuy is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Satoru Noda. It was serialized in Shueisha’s seinen manga magazine Weekly Young Jump from August 2014 to April 2022, with its chapters collected in thirty-one tankōbon volumes.

Anime is more than just a niche in the United States now and Hollywood is taking notice — Netflix especially. The streamer has both produced English-language anime movie/TV adaptations in-house and imported shows made in Japan for international distribution (such as the live-action "Fullmetal Alchemist" trilogy). One can only wonder which anime Netflix will see fit to adapt next — and whether fans should see that as a promise or a threat.

In the meantime, one of Netflix's most recent imports won't convince it to slow down on live-action anime. 2024's "Golden Kamuy," which premiered in Japanese theaters this past January, was added to Netflix on May 19, 2024. The "Golden Kamuy" manga is complete (it ran for 314 chapters from 2015 to 2022), while the anime still has a fifth and final season on the horizon adapting the manga's last chapters.

Considering the success of the homonymous, multi-awarded manga by Satoru Noda and the quality of the anime, one of the best series of the last few years, a live-action adaptation was bound to happen. The recent release on Netflix follows the first season of the manga and stays quite close to it.

As I wrote in the anime review, “Golden Kamuy” is a rather different shonen title, which stands out by focusing on an Ainu character, while highlighting the language, culture, and customs of the indigenous people, supervised by Hiroshi Nakagawa, an Ainu language linguist from Chiba University.

In a new trailer uploaded by Netflix Asia, the live-action Golden Kamuy movie will make its international premiere on Netflix on May 19, four months after its initial Japanese release. Shueisha announced that they will be fully revamping its long-selling history manga series “Learning Through Manga: World History,” with all 18 volumes to be released on Oct 4.

The new version, which will be the first major revamp in 22 years since its release in 2002, will change the format from the previous large-format hardcover to a more portable softcover and will also completely renew the content.

The cover illustrations for all 18 volumes is drawn by 16 popular manga artists, including Hirohiko Araki (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure), Tatsuya Endo (Spy x Family), and Kohei Horikoshi (My Hero Academia).
