Being a Canadian born in the Maritime province of New Brunswick and raised on the edge of rural Ontario, hockey was an inescapable, all-consuming passion seemingly anywhere I went. But as a nerdy child who drifted toward anime and manga, I was outside the gravitational pull of my nation's favorite pastime, content instead with reading about everything from Go players to seinen dark fantasy. With Dogsred's surprising introduction, I finally got to embrace the best of both worlds, with the manga speaking to me on a near-spiritual level as a Canadian, seeing hockey through the eyes of Satoru Noda.
Satoru Noda launched Dogsred on July 27, 2023, in the seinen Weekly Young Jump magazine following the best-selling success of Golden Kamuy, with Dogsred itself being a remake of Supinamarada! Satoru Noda created Golden Kamuy, one of the best treasure hunt stories in existence. Of course, another huge competitor is Eiichiro Oda’s One Piece, one of the Shonen Big 3. However, it would be wrong to say Golden Kamuy is any less just because it is not as popular as One Piece.
Golden Kamuy has been one of the best all-encompassing genre anime in recent times. The story has tragedy, drama, comedy, dark humor, gore, and everything you could ask for. The only missing element is the opportunity to let the readers get bored.

Based on the beloved manga series of the same name, Golden Kamuy introduced Satoru Noda’s memorable characters and action-packed tale to the silver screen. Director Shigeaki Kubo faced the challenge of adapting over a dozen manga volumes into a feature-length film while staying faithful to the source material.
He succeeded in large part thanks to expansively showcasing what makes Golden Kamuy such an engrossing story—the perfect balance of brutality and humor, education and adventure.
From its opening scenes of warfare’s harsh realities to its character-driven quest for gold and justice, Golden Kamuy immersed viewers in late 19th-century Hokkaido. Lead by Kento Yamazaki’s gritty yet sympathetic Saichi “Immortal” Sugimoto and Anna Yamada’s headstrong Ainu guide Asirpa, characters both familiar and new leapt from the page with depth and dimension.
Fierce battles against men and nature alike thrilled, and tensions between factions vying for the treasure kept mysteries swirling.

Anime is more than just a niche in the United States now and Hollywood is taking notice — Netflix especially. The streamer has both produced English-language anime movie/TV adaptations in-house and imported shows made in Japan for international distribution (such as the live-action "Fullmetal Alchemist" trilogy). One can only wonder which anime Netflix will see fit to adapt next — and whether fans should see that as a promise or a threat.
In the meantime, one of Netflix's most recent imports won't convince it to slow down on live-action anime. 2024's "Golden Kamuy," which premiered in Japanese theaters this past January, was added to Netflix on May 19, 2024. The film is an adaptation of a manga by Satoru Noda, which was previously adapted as an anime in 2018. The "Golden Kamuy" manga is complete (it ran for 314 chapters from 2015 to 2022), while the anime still has a fifth and final season on the horizon adapting the manga's last chapters.

To the Ainu people, indigenous people from the cold northern island of Hokkaido in Japan, God lives in everything. Kamuy, as they call these spirits, reside in animals, natural phenomena, and even human inventions. All of these have the capacity to be just as evil as they can be good. Satoru Noda's Golden Kamuy manga chronicles the good and the bad of a gold rush through the icy mountains of Hokkaido, as the Kamuy of the shiny metal brings out the truth in people, for better and worse.

Considering the success of the homonymous, multi-awarded manga by Satoru Noda and the quality of the anime, one of the best series of the last few years, a live-action adaptation was bound to happen. The recent release on Netflix follows the first season of the manga and stays quite close to it.

It’s quite telling when mediums like comics and manga, which are often neglected by highbrow literary types, can convey the plight of marginalized people with much sensibility and to a wider audience as compared to other mainstream, esteemed mediums. Mangaka Satoru Noda’s masterpiece, Golden Kamuy, a story that revolves majorly around the lives and culture of the Ainu people, the extremely persecuted indigenous tribespeople of Northern Japan, is among such brilliant examples. Simultaneously, the narrative presents a strong theme regarding the futility of war, its disastrous effects on the soldiers who are commoditized by the state, and the narrative treatment, which is a whacky yet brilliant mix of absurd humor and brutal, graphic violence. But the most memorable aspect, which truly makes Golden Kamuy a ground-breaking piece of literature, is the varied and unexpected ways it appeals to the humanity of the readers through its characters.
