Any fan of Jane Austen's work will likely have a ranking of their favorite adaptations of Austen's novels. In 1996, Gwyneth Paltrow starred in an adaptation of one of Austen's longer works, Emma. Paltrow stars as the matchmaking heroine Emma Woodhouse herself, and you can now see it on Paramount+. Jeremy Northam stars as Mr. Knightley. Other cast include Alan Cumming and Ewan McGregor. The movie is certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with an 84% critic's score. Audiences have shown a little less love, but it holds a decently impressive score of 76%. Paltrow's Emma is a slightly unhinged matchmaker, much to the chagrin of everyone around her, and that's why it works. The logline for Emma is as follows:...

Period movies dive into the different eras in history and often captivate viewers with incredible sets. They are known for their luxurious costumes and epic dramas. While the visual experiences of these films are often what lure viewers into the world of period drama in the first place, a great movie gives the audience more than a historical set. The Pianist gives a heartbreaking depiction of Jewish lives during the Holocaust. Titanic tackles the human factors behind a great tragedy through the lense of a pair of lovers.
Great period drama films not only have the ability to capture a past era with accuracy but also provide a thought-provoking experience. Perfect casting, stellar performances from actors, absolutely stunning sets and human, relatable characters are all part of the package deal that makes a film perfect. The best ones, just like the stories in them, turn out to be timeless.

Gwyneth Paltrow confirmed on “Hot Ones” that a rumor about Bill Clinton sleeping through a screening of “Emma” at the White House is true. The 1996 Jane Austen adaptation was directed by Douglas McGrath and featured Paltrow in the title role. She earned critical acclaim for the performance, which continued her hot streak as one of the most recognizable actors of the 1990s indie film boom.
“Is it true that Bill Clinton passed out asleep during a White House screening of ‘Emma’?” host Sean Evans asked Paltrow.
“True!” Paltrow answered. “He was snoring right in front of me. I was like, ‘Wow, I guess this is going to be a real hit movie.’ But it was! So fuck you, Bill Clinton!
“Emma” was a box office success with nearly $40 million worldwide on a production budget under $8 million. The film picked up two Academy Award nominations, one for costume design and another for original score.

Emma (2020) is a decadent reimagining that balances contemporary sensibilities and progressive themes with Austen's classic tale. Gwyneth Paltrow's Emma (1996) is visually stunning but suffers from lukewarm chemistry and a staid portrayal of Mr. Knightley. Clueless (1995) remains the best and most creative modern adaptation of Austen's Emma, updating the story for a new generation.
Jane Austen's classic novel Emma has been adapted into multiple movies, some greater than others. Every few years, Hollywood dives back into the bodiced world of Regency England to resuscitate one of Jane Austen's spunky, whimsical heroines — with the most recent lavish restoration going to Autumn de Wilde's version, Emma (2020), starring Anya Taylor-Joy as the captivating conductress of romantic ruination. It's the classic tale of pride, privilege, and one irrepressibly likable heroine. Every generation has their favorite version of Austen's story and picking one Emma movie adaptation over another isn't an easy task for fans.

Romance has been a favorite genre for decades but is undergoing a Renaissance of sorts with the advent of BookTok and Bookstagram movements on social media. Books have become cool again, and the next step for an engaging novel is always adaptation. There have been plenty of sweet, steamy, and loving TV shows that have been inspired by books, and new ones continue to be produced every day.
What makes these TV shows so universally loved is that they're so diverse. Be it period dramas, modern teenage first loves, or fantasy worlds, there is something for everyone. Still, some romance TV shows based on books shine brighter than others, and these are the best ones to delve into for all the butterflies, tingles, and feelings.

Among all the upcoming MCU projects, ‘Fantastic Four’ is getting the most attention, sharing the spotlight with ‘Deadpool 3.’ The reboot has a big task ahead after some not-so-great movies in the past, and fans are busy digging through rumors to figure out who will play the iconic characters.
People are talking a lot about Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm and linking Joseph Quinn and Daveed Diggs to Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm. A few weeks ago, many thought Pedro Pascal would be Reed Richards, causing a mix of excitement and disappointment. There’s also talk about Javier Bardem playing Galactus.
But, there’s another rumor causing a stir—it says Silver Surfer will be a woman villain in the new movie. MyTimeToShineHello, a source that’s usually right about these things, confirmed this again in a recent Ama, backing up info leaked a few months back.

But, there’s another rumor causing a stir—it says Silver Surfer will be a woman villain in the new movie. MyTimeToShineHello, a source that’s usually right about these things, confirmed this again in a recent Ama, backing up info leaked a few months back.

It’s been heavily speculated that Vanessa Kirby will be Sue Storm, with Ben Grimm and Johnny Storm strongly associated with Joseph Quinn and Daveed Diggs. A few weeks earlier, the world seemingly got the confirmation that Pedro Pascal would be playing Reed Richards and some fans were left excited with the premise and some extremely disappointed. Netflix has spent billions of dollars trying to capture the attention of subscribers worldwide during the recent Peak TV battles. They’ve thrown obscenely high budgets towards beloved auteurs and greased the wheels of awards campaigns in the hopes of becoming the go-to stop for all of your content needs. Yet, for all of their investments and ambitions, what they eventually struck gold with was an ebullient teen rom-com that captured the hearts of millions.

Two sequels followed, further adapting the best-selling novels by YA queen Jenny Han. With Lara Jean earning her happy ending, where else could they take the story? While Paul Rudd's role as Phoebe's boyfriend, Mike Hannigan, in "Friends" may have secured him the status of the nation's favorite boyfriend, it was his role in Amy Heckerling's "Clueless" that earned Rudd the mantle of "heartthrob." Based on Jane Austen's "Emma," Rudd's role as the mild-mannered, smart and snarky Josh was designed as a counterpart to Mr. Knightley, who starts as a kind of cheeky antagonist to the titular Emma Woodhouse before discovering his true feelings. The film follows Cher Horowitz (Alicia Silverstone), a popular Beverley Hills high-school student with a penchant for matchmaking. She makes it her mission to provide a new student a makeover ... and eventually discovers her feelings for her former stepbrother (played by Rudd).
The ageless actor has been charismatic since his first major motion picture role — Josh has an easy-going charm, he's ambitious and compassionate — not to mention the actor playing him is devastatingly good-looking.

Over the span of 12 months following her feature film debut in early 2016, Anya Taylor-Joy went from living deliciously in "The Witch" to raising hell as an artificial being in "Morgan" and matching wits with 23 shades of James McAvoy in "Split." She has only further cemented herself as one of the more fascinating actors of her age bracket since then, starring in pitch-dark satires, lively Jane Austen movies, and even Viking epics. But it's not just their subject matter that makes Taylor-Joy's projects so intriguing.
Every film or TV show she's worked on has called for a very different type of screen acting. For example, Taylor-Joy's highly physical turn in Edgar Wright's stylish Giallo love letter "Last Night in Soho" stands in sharp contrast to her far more internal performance as a troubled chess prodigy in the miniseries "The Queen's Gambit." Then there are her collaborations with M. Night Shyamalan...

Anya Taylor-Joy reveals why she rejected a potential role in a Disney Channel pilot to star as the lead character in Robert Eggers' hit 2015 horror movie, The Witch. Eggers' directorial debut saw Taylor-Joy star alongside Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie, Harvey Scrimshaw, Ellie Grainger, and Lucas Dawson in the A24-distributed film. The Witch centered on Taylor-Joy's Thomasin, the eldest daughter of a puritanical family who settle in 1630s New England and falls victim to the titular force, suffering a number of surreal and disturbing occurrences that gradually claim the lives of the family members.
In an interview with Harper's Bazaar, Taylor-Joy reveals that on the same day that she was cast in her breakout role of Thomasin in The Witch, she had also been offered a role in a pilot episode for an undisclosed Disney Channel series. "The most beautiful thing in the world is a match well made." While Emma Woodhouse said this about her penchant for pairing couples, the same could very well have been said about Gwyneth Paltrow's casting in Emma. Paltrow was just 24 years old when she starred as the titular matchmaker in director Douglas McGrath's 1996 adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel, marking one of her first major roles. "I knew she had theater training, so she could carry herself, " McGrath told The Los Angeles Times in 1996 of casting Paltrow. "We had many actresses, big and small, who wanted to play this part. The minute she started the read-through, the very first line, I thought,...

In preparation for Autumn de Wilde’s Emma, costume designer Alexandra Byrne spent her time researching her favorite time period for clothing. “The reason I like this period is that it’s the beginning of fashion plates being published for women,” Byrne says. “The combination of the fashion plate and looking at the original garments lets you understand them as clothes rather than costumes.” Based on the Jane Austen novel of the same name, and starring Anya Taylor-Joy in the eponymous role, Emma follows Emma Woodhouse, a young woman who spends her time meddling in the romantic lives of those around her. Here, Byrne digs into her fresh, personality-focused approach to a well-loved period story.

It has been a busy year for Anya Taylor-Joy. Just before the global pandemic shuttered movie houses, she starred in the new adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Emma” to rapturous praise. Later in the year, her limited series “The Queen’s Gambit” would become the most watched title on Netflix. The actress scored double Golden Globe nominations for these projects, but her Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress bid for “Emma” feels like the classic recipe for Golden Globe success.
Taylor-Joy is nominated alongside Maria Bakalova (“Borat Subsequent Moviefilm”), Kate Hudson (“Music”), Michelle Pfieffer (“French Exit’), and Rosamund Pike (“I Care A Lot”).

“I did want to make an escape film, and I didn’t know how badly we would need an escape film,” describes director Autumn de Wilde. Her sumptuous adaptation of Jane Austen’s “Emma” landed in theaters just before the pandemic forced movie houses to shutter. The timing of its release saw “Emma” make a quick jump from theaters to video on demand, where the newly quarantined masses gobbled up its bright and witty story. “One of the biggest things for me,” explains the director, “is that people have told me that it helped them through a hard time.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.
The screwball comedy is de Wilde’s feature film directorial debut. She is widely known as a photographer, famed for portraits and album covers of rockers like Elliott Smith, Beck, and Jenny Lewis. Directing was a natural evolution for her, as de Wilde notes “I’ve always been a storyteller.

In the Netflix smash hit Bridgerton, the not-so-polite London regency society serves as the backdrop for a whole lotta drama. Adapted from Julia Quinn's novels, Shonda Rhimes's show offers an inclusive twist on the whitewashed period dramas of Jane Austen's time. The essence of Austen's writing - the wit, the snark, and the undercurrent of knowing - is present, too, in Rhimes's series. Astute viewers can locate all six of Austen's works in Bridgerton's themes and characters. While the late Ms. Austen might have blushed at some of the (ahem) positions in which Rhimes's characters find themselves, there's no denying her influence.
How Bridgerton References Sense and Sensibility
In Sense and Sensibility, sisters Marianne and Elinor differ in almost every way. Elinor is reserved, polite, and introspective. Marianne is fiery and prone to the occasional social faux pas. Similarly, Daphne, the diamond of her social circle, is the epitome of grace,...

When Anya Taylor-Joy’s “Emma” sauntered on to our cinema screens earlier this year, it wasn’t the first time audiences experienced the story of Jane Austen’s meddling heroine. Gwyneth Paltrow previously embodied the role in a 1996 film version. That original incarnation had a decent reception at the Oscars, but the 2020 update is poised to perform even better.
The 2020 adaptation from Focus Features has one major factor boosting its chances. The film debuted in theaters on February 20, 2020. That was just a couple weeks before the coronavirus pandemic shuttered movie houses around the country. “Emma” was indeed the last film I saw in theaters, and I imagine the same is true for many industry professionals. In a chaotic year where films either had to postpone a theatrical run or head straight to video-on-demand, “Emma” will likely stick out in voters’ memories as one of their final movie theater experiences of...

Jane Austen's novel Emma has been adapted for the screen on several different occasions, most notably in the '90s with both Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Beckinsale in the role of the titular meddlesome socialite. In 2020, Autumn de Wilde offered a fresh take full of modern humor and the sort of frenetic visuals that normally pop in a music video.

Some of the changes that Emma. made were embraced by fans, but purists may find them too much to overlook.

In our exclusive clip from the Emma home release extras, we get a feel for the camaraderie on set, along with Anya Taylor-Joy's first meeting with Autumn de Wilde, and the friendship between Taylor-Joy and Mia Goth, who plays Harriet Smith. It seems that the cast and crew got along really well while making the movie, which isn't always the case when different mindsets get together for the first time. Thankfully everything came together for the box office hit, which could have been a lot bigger...

It’s quite possible Jane Austen may qualify as the author whose works have been most adapted for the screen since the turn of the century. Her work continues to endure and in many ways might qualify as one of the earliest pop culture phenomenons.
The latest such effort is Emma., which Universal released just prior to the nation going into quarantine. While available to rent previously, it is now available to own via streaming with the Combo Pack coming May 19. Or, you can win our contest.
All you need to do is tell us which adaptation of an Austen work is your personal favorite and why. All entries must be submitted by 11:59 p.m., Friday, May 15. The contest is open to North American readers only and the decision of the ComicMix judges will be final.

Once upon a time, the theatrical window that comprised the weeks or months between a movie’s opening weekend and home media debut was a sacred thing. It was so pronounced, it led to debates between famous directors and other members of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as to whether streaming giant Netflix should even be allowed to win Oscars. That all went out the window a week ago.
As the coronavirus pandemic continues to change in big and small ways how people lead their lives, it’s left the moviemaking industry in a state of anxious upheaval. Currently movie theaters have been closed by the city governments of New York and Los Angeles, and major theater chains nationwide are shutting down in both the U.S. and UK. As a consequence, studio movies currently in theaters have no (or very few) theaters to play in.

Most of the country is currently on lock down, with California officially ordered to stay in doors. So Universal has decided to release two of its most recent movies on Digital early. They both arrive today. And as an added incentive, the filmmakers will be doing special Twitter Q&As so you can watch at home along with the directors of The Hunt and The Invisible Man.
The Invisible Man proved to be a huge hit at the box office when it opened in February, and it was still doing quite well at theaters just as all the big cinema chains shut their doors for the foreseeable future. So it is unprecedented that Universal has decided to release the movie so early on Digital and VOD. The Hunt, on the other hand, didn't really get a chance to shine on the big screen, as it opened the weekend everything started to shut down in America.
