After 60 Years, These Classic Spider-Man Villains Finally Enter Movie Continuity

Some of Spider-Man's earliest foes in Marvel Comics’ history, the Enforcers, are set to face off against an MCU version of Spider-Man. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is a prequel miniseries to the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) TV series of the same name, which takes place in a universe branching off from the main MCU timeline – and the Enforcers are a perfect first villain for this version of Spider-Man.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (2024) #3 – written by Christos Gage, with art by Eric Gapstur – finds Peter Parker in over his head as he tries to navigate his double life as Spider-Man and balance his school and new powers and identity. In the midst of all that, Peter takes on a group of villains called the Enforcers, in a serious throwback to the character's earliest days.

The Enforcers are notable for being among the first antagonists the Webslinger ever faced, but they have...

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-man #1 Preview Reveals How The McU's New Peter Parker Gets His Powers
Image
Ahead of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man's premiere on Disney+ next month, Marvel Comics will release a new prequel comic book highlighting more of this wall-crawler's earliest adventures.

Marvel Studios has its main Spider-Man, Tom Holland's Peter Parker, but previously introduced an animated Variant in What If...? season 1. This third version borrows heavily from the McU's Spidey, expanding on his origin in a world where Norman Osborn became his mentor in place of Tony Stark.

In this first look at next Wednesday's Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #1, we see the fateful moment Peter is bitten by the spider that gives him his amazing new powers.

However, in place of a radioactive creepy-crawly, we know that this one falls through a portal opened by Doctor Strange when one of the Sorcerer Supreme's adventures brings him to Midtown High. How much that changes what we know of Spider-Man remains to be seen.

Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-man Comic Cover Reintroduces Three Of The Wall-Crawler's Earliest Foes
Image
Marvel Animation's Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is coming to Disney+ next January, and before it does, we'll be able to swing into some new Spidey stories in a special prequel comic book series written by Marvel veteran Christos Gage and drawn by rising star artist Eric Gapstur.

Set during the teenager's earliest days as Spider-Man, the five-issue limited series introduces a young Peter Parker, his supporting cast, and some of the hero's legendary villains.

The animated series will take place in its reality and we now see that this rookie web-slinger will face off with The Enforcers, a trio first introduced by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in the pages of 1963's Amazing Spider-Man #10. They haven't changed much in terms of appearance and this should be a fun clash. Whether they appear in the show as well remains to be seen.

While its hard to tell from the art released thus far, the villain seen in the preview appears to be Hammerhead, the mobster with the steel-plated, indestructible skull. DC Is Really Taking Its Time Building This Gotham Hero into an All-Time Great (& It's Working)

Mia Maps Mizoguchi has been a Gotham resident for quite some time, but its only now, years after her debut, that DC Comics is finally ready to give Maps her spotlight. Its been a long time coming, but iDC used that time to grow Maps character from a bright youth interested in Gothams mysteries to a tested Gotham resident whos seen Gotham at its worst - and now, a superheroic time-traveler working with the Birds of Prey.

Maps Mizoguchi first appeared in Gotham Academy by Brendon Fletcher, Becky Cloonan, and Karl Kerschl, which explored the tainted history of one of Gothams oldest institutions. Maps stood out for her genuine adoration for Batman and Robin, which sometimes led her closer to danger than her friends would have liked. Two-face Is Getting His First Solo Series This Year As Harvey Dent Finally Returns To The Courtroom
Image
DC Comics has announced that Two-Face is getting a new limited comic book series from writer Christian Ward and artist Fábio Veras. Believe it or not, this will be the first-ever solo series for the notorious Gotham City supervillain (and occasional good guy) Harvey Dent!

In the tradition of the recent villain-focused comic book series The Penguin, DC's new "All In" series Two-Face explores the good and bad sides of Harvey Dent as two characters operating and living in the same body. As the good Harvey explores a Perry Mason-like life as an attorney-at-law, bad Harvey doesn't just want partial control of the body, but full control of the mind.

Here's the official description for Two-Face #1 directly from DC Comics:

Birds of Prey vs Wonder Woman's Amazons Just Gave DC Its Own Civil War
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Batman #152!The feud between the Birds of Prey and Wonder Woman's Amazons is far from over. Anyone who has been following the Birds of Prey's title series knows that their first arc from last year put them in conflict with the Amazons, albeit for a reasonable reason. However, an Amazon never forgets, as the saying goes.

As such, the Amazons make it clear that they still consider the Birds of Prey enemies of themselves and Wonder Woman, per Batman #152's backup story, "Emotionally Compromised" by Kelly Thompson, Mattia De Iulis, and Clayton Cowles. It's obvious from the outset that the tension between the Amazons and the Birds is still simmering, and it might take a lot for those fences to mend again.

Anyone familiar with what the Amazons can do as a connected, cohesive unit should be afraid of what they could do to the...

I Can't Stop Rooting For DC's Most Unexpected Friendship of 2024
Image
The instant connection between Barda and Cassandra is heartwarming proof that having someone who understands you can make a world of difference. Cassandra's impassioned speech is the key to freeing Barda from possession, showcasing the strength of their bond. The friendship between Barda and Cassandra, both struggling with communication, is a triumph of kindred spirits and a highlight of Birds of Prey.

One of my many, many favorite parts of DC's Birds of Prey revival has been the instantaneous friendship that has sprung up between Big Barda and Cassandra Cain: two characters who have long struggled to connect with others. While every hero on the team is worthy of praise, my own struggle to connect with my peers makes the Barda/Cass dynamic particularly noteworthy to me.

Agatha All Along First Look Image Reveals Deep Cut Marvel Characters
Image
The big reveal at the end of WandaVision wasn’t just a shock to TV watchers. Of course, Kathryn Hahn’s character Agatha stole the screen from stars Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany because, well, she’s Kathryn Hahn. But not even Marvel Zombies expected that it was Agatha all along.

That’s partially because the Agatha Harkness of Marvel Comics has little to do with the spitfire played by Hahn. The comics Agatha is an elderly woman who splits her time training Wanda and serving as nanny for the Fantastic Four, not a trickster villain.

The willingness to change up canon that WandaVision creator Jac Schaeffer showed makes the first look at Agatha All Along something of a surprise. As presented by Empire, the image shows Agatha with her own coven, consisting of some witches drawn from deep Marvel lore. Joining her is Broadway legend Patti LuPone as Lilia Calderu,...

Suicide Squad's Best Friendship Makes It a Stronger Team than the Justice League
Image
Warning: Spoilers for DC's Spring Breakout! #1!

Suicide Squad members' friendships are stronger than those in the Justice League. Harley Quinn and King Shark's bond exemplifies the strong relationships within the Suicide Squad. The Suicide Squad's camaraderie and loyalty outshine the Justice League's mere alliances.

One of the best superhero friendships in the DC Universe doesn't come from the Justice League, but instead, the Suicide Squad. In the DC Universe, the Suicide Squad has always been viewed as a being on a significantly lower tier on the superteam hierarchy than the Justice League. If the Jla are an A-team, most people in-universe view Suicide Squad as a B-team, if even that.

People may not respect the Suicide Squad as a team, but they have to respect their friendship as showcased in DC's Spring Breakout! #1 in the story "Field Trip" by Joey Esposito and Vasco Georgiev. In it, Harley Quinn breaks...

The Birds of Prey Debut New Jungle Costumes - Perfect for Fighting Dinosaurs

Warning: Contains potential spoilers for Birds of Prey #11!

Birds of Prey #11's main cover features new jungle-themed costume for the Birds of Prey. As the Birds search for Barbara Gordon, who has been abducted by a mysterious villain, they end up in a dimension with dinosaurs. DC Comics has announced multiple dino-themed stories for July 2024.

1 Justice League Member Keeps Getting Possessed (& Eventually It’s Going To Be A Huge Problem)
Image
Wonder Woman's lack of weaknesses and immense strength make her formidable — except she keeps getting possessed by dark forces. Diana's multiple possessions have posed serious threats to the Justice League. It's crucial for Wonder Woman to develop mental defenses to prevent future possession threats.

There's no denying that Wonder Woman is one of the most powerful heroes in the Justice League. This is partly because she has functionally no weaknesses and is nearly as strong as Superman. So it's all the more concerning that she keeps getting possessed. Several times a powerful villain has taken over Diana's body and used it for evil.

One of the major times Diana got possessed was during Jla: Scary Monsters #5 by Chris Claremont, Joshua Hood, Sean Parsons, Jack Morelli, and Guy Major. After the Justice League came under attack by demonic forces while on vacation, Wonder Woman was infected. This resulted in her...

Harley Quinn's New Team Gives Her the Role She Was Always Meant to Have

Harley Quinn proves to be a rational voice of reason within the Birds of Prey team. Despite her past as a villain, Harley's skills as a psychiatrist shine through on missions. Harley should be included in the next Birds of Prey lineup due to her critical thinking abilities.

Now that she's a member of the Birds of Prey, Harley Quinn can finally be the voice of reason she always should've been in the DC Universe. Much of Harley Quinn's time in the DC Universe, both as a hero and as a villain, has seen her underestimated by her peers and even readers. ‘Birds of Prey,’ ‘Transformers,’ ‘I Am Stan’ and More: Heat Vision’s Best Comics of 2023
Image
After a brief explosion during the pandemic, the comics industry is undergoing an existential crisis. It faces tumultuous sales at local comic shops, and the creative malaise audiences felt this year in the superhero movie genre is well-reflected on the publishing side of Marvel and DC, the industry’s two biggest publishers. To say that most of the output from these companies lacks spark is to put it mildly.

Still, there were plenty of bright spots this year for the medium. While Mattel’s Barbie was a hit on the big screen, it was Hasbro’s Transformers comic that ruled the toy-inspired genre in print. And though Marvel’s actual comic books struggled creatively this year, a number of creators managed to craft moving and innovative stories inspired by Marvel (see: I Am Stan, a graphic novel biography of Stan Lee and The Super Hero’s Journey).

Black Canary assembles a team to rescue her sister from Themyscira, using strategic tactics to battle through Amazons and Wonder Woman. One Surprising Justice League Hero Can Take Down Wonder Woman - Temporarily
Image
Warning! Contains spoilers for Birds of Prey #3!

Green Arrow manages to temporarily bring down Wonder Woman, despite her being one of the most powerful heroes in the Justice League. He uses magically enhanced arrows to turn her into a flock of butterflies. Wonder Woman's strength and speed far surpass Green Arrow's, and she has no real weaknesses. However, Green Arrow's surprising "defeat" makes narrative sense and slows her down. While Green Arrow could never truly stop Wonder Woman, his temporary victory shows how he is willing to face dangerous foes in order to protect his allies, like Black Canary.

Most fans are aware of classic Justice League match-ups like Batman vs. Superman, but very few characters could actually take down Wonder Woman. That's why it was so surprising that DC recently revealed that if push came to shove, Green Arrow could bring the Amazonian princess down — at least for a little while.
