A sequel is in early development for the original comedy movie that Sony Pictures released earlier this year. Stars Keke Palmer and Sza are expected to return, as is the film’s creative team.

Lawrence Lamont helmed the TriStar Pictures feature from a script by Syreeta Singleton. It hit theaters in January and surpassed $50 million at the global box office.

Lil Rel Howery, Janelle James, Keyla Monterroso Mejia, Maude Apatow, Katt Williams, Joshua Neal, Aziza Scott, Patrick Cage and Amin Joseph also starred in the first film.

It’s about to be another “One of Them Days,” as a sequel to the hit comedy starring Keke Palmer and Sza and produced by Issa Rae is in early development at TriStar Pictures.

Palmer and Sza are expected to return for the new movie, along with the film’s original creative team, but plot details are still being kept under wraps.

Paramount Global’s CBS will start airing “Comics Unleased with Byron Allen” later this fall as the network’s replacement for its canceled game show-inspired comedy talk show “After Midnight.”

Comics Unleashed already airs on 14 CBS-owned local TV stations across the country, including some CBS stations that aired the panel-driven talk show in the slot following “After Midnight.” Most CBS-owned independent stations air the show in broadcast syndication as well.

The first night for Comics Unleashed on CBS stations and affiliates is Tuesday, September 23, when it will debut after “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,” which airs one hour prior on Monday. The show will initially occupy the full hour-long slot, with back-to-back episodes in September. Keke Palmer is a huge draw, and her latest project proves that. Early this year, she released her buddy comedy One of Them Days, which was a major critical and commercial hit.

The buddy comedy marked hip-hop star Sza's acting debut, and the two of them did magic together. Following a very successful theatrical run at the beginning of the year, the movie is now a hit on Netflix as well, Tudum reports.

One of Them Days premiered on Netflix on Apr. 2 and for the week between Mar. 31 to Apr. 6, the movie amassed 7.7 million views and 12.4 million hours viewed. It was enough to send it straight to charts, and it debuted in second place before the previous week's chart-topper The Life List, which added 29.2 million more views after its initial 24.4 million views.

Keke Palmer's new comedy One of Them Days has broken a Rotten Tomatoes record. The movie, which was produced by Insecure's Issa Rae, was directed by Lawrence Lamont (who previously collaborated with Rae on Max's Rap Sh!t) from the debut screenplay by Syreeta Singleton (who was the showrunner of Rap Sh!t). It co-stars Palmer and singer-songwriter Sza as best friends Dreux and Alyssa alongside an ensemble cast that includes Vanessa Bell Calloway, Maude Apatow, Katt Williams, Dewayne Perkins, Lil Rel Howery, and Janelle James.

For a day with a hard and stressful deadline, Tristar’s One of Them Days starring music artist Sza and Keke Palmer has a soundtrack that reduces stress and emphasizes the comedy of the film.

The premise hinges on Palmer’s Dreux and Sza’s Alyssa, two roommates who find themselves scrambling for rent money when Alyssa’s boyfriend Keshawn (Joshua David Neal) took their original payment to try out a creative endeavor. Their landlord Uche (Rizi Timane) comes knocking with the threat that if they can’t come up with $1,500 by 6 p.m., they’ll be evicted.

The Issa Rae-produced film came together from the CoCre lab at Sony Pictures, which was a pact between Hoorae Media’s ColorCreative and Sony Pictures to source and produce emerging diverse screenwriters to write and develop their first studio features based on original ideas.

“One of Them Days” was written by Syreeta Singleton (“Rap Sh!t”), directed by Lawrence Lamont (“Rap Sh!t”) and executive produced by Rae and Palmer. Other producers for the film include Deniese Davis, Sara Rastogi, James Lopez and Poppy Hanks.

Wolf Man comes in low out of the gate. Still, the Blumhouse feature only cost $25M to produce before promotional materials. The horror movie starring Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner could transform its 4-day holiday weekend total into $20M, but only if people show up. One of Them Days is the kind of comedy Hollywood used to make regularly. The film keeps the premise simple and trusts the characters to react in funny ways. Even though it is more of a rarity in today’s IP landscape, One of Them Days proves that comedy especially need not be overthought.

Dreux (Keke Palmer) works night shifts at Norm’s diner and is trying for a promotion to franchise manager. Her roommate, Alyssa (Sza), is an artist with no income. When Alyssa’s boyfriend, Keshawn (Joshua David Neal) steals their rent money for his own hare-brained scheme, their landlord, Uche (Rizi Timane), threatens to evict them if they don’t have $1,500 by 6 p.m.

That premise is no high-concept sensation. Rather, it is the simple premise that fueled many of the great comedies. They need X amount of money by X time. Happy Gilmore played golf to raise enough money.

Plot: When best friends and roommates Dreux and Alyssa discover Alyssa’s boyfriend has blown their rent money, the duo finds themselves going to extremes in a race against the clock to avoid eviction and keep their friendship intact.

Review: It’s a downright shame how few comedies get a theatrical release these days. We’re far from the days of the Hughes or even Apatow era in terms of frequency, and it seems that when we do get them, they’re straight to streaming. Rising marketing costs have made it so studios only seem to want to take a gamble on low-budget horror or big-budget tentpole films based on a popular IP. So it’s nice to see an original comedy release in theaters as there’s nothing quite like laughing in a crowded auditorium. And if there’s one thing you’ll definitely get out of One of Them Days...

There are more comedians in the $60 to $70 range than any other group on this list, including Shane Gillis, Brett Goldstein, Brian Reagan, Nate Bargatze, Jo Koy, Tom Segura, Patton Oswalt and the red-pilled Whitney Cummings.

Universal and Blumhouse’s “Wolf Man” reboot has made $1.4 million in Thursday previews so far. As it opens this weekend, it faces off against Sony’s comedy “One of Them Days,” which made $1.3 million in previews.

“Wolf Man,” helmed by “The Invisible Man” director Leigh Whannell and starring Christopher Abbott, is expected to prevail and make $17 million to $21 million in its opening weekend over the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend. “One of Them Days,” an R-rated comedy with Keke Palmer and Sza (in her acting debut), is on track for $8 million to $13 million between Friday to Monday.

So what’s the cinema antidote to the brutal and frozen tundra outside our doors (and let’s not get into the West Coast)? How about a raunchy, rollicking buddy comedy? Hmm, that’s usually Summer popcorn fodder, but that’s not the only “rule” that this new flick is breaking. Rather than two mismatched male comic actors, this focuses on the friendship (though strained at times) of two twenty-something African American women. That’s a nice “flip”, along with the pairing of a screen “vet” and a star from the world of hip hop (and R&b/pop). Now that’s a combo sure to end those winter doldrums, along with its “Cali” backdrop. So that’s the setting, as the principals frantically try to survive a zany twenty-four hours that certainly qualifies as One Of Them Days that will put their bond to the test.

Given that 2025 represents the 30-year anniversary of F. Gary Gray’s Friday, it’s somewhat of a surprise that some studio executive at Warner Bros. hadn’t gotten the bright, synergistic idea to remake it. Thankfully, the world probably got something better than that in Lawrence Lamont’s One of Them Days, a film that revives Friday’s spirit while bringing its own flavor, and taking the current state of the world into full account.

At least, the state of the world as far as lower-class Black folks are concerned. Los Angeles may be on fire literally, and the world metaphorically, but the rent is still gonna be due on the first. Not only that, but there’s that one apartment complex you don’t walk past, talented folks are gonna be stuck in a bum-ass job, and you’re gonna have to talk down some friend who hooked up with the wrong person.

Keke Palmer will always be known for her role as Mercedes in Hustlers, and also for more recently starring alongside Daniel Kaluuya and Steven Yeun in Nope, but she’s got a new movie coming soon that has everyone talking. Palmer stars opposite Sza and Katt Williams in One of Them Days, which is set to open in theaters tomorrow, but early previews for the film are already playing and reviews from critics have begun surfacing on the internet, and it has scored a nearly perfect 97% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing. This ranks the highest in Palmer’s young but distinguished career, even ahead of Imperial Dreams, the thriller that also stars John Boyega with a 92% score from critics.
