Quick Links The Duality of Hilma, Abstract Artist Balancing Spiritual Context with Artistic Adventure A Cleverly Queer Study of Hilma Stumbles Due to Rudolf Steiner Hilma Ends Strong and Her Art Lives On
Hilma is a lush biopic about one of the first abstract painters in Western art history, a Swedish woman by the name of Hilma af Klint, who set off to challenge the entire artistic world in the late 1800s. Even though she easily mastered the more traditional avenues of illustration like portraiture and landscape paintings, Klint quickly found herself on a more spiritual plane, deciding to draw line-based symmetrical images that represented a depth beyond form.
This was all undoubtedly inspired by her familys vested interest in the studies of numbers and plants, her circle of friends (called The Five who introduced her to the pseudo-religion of Theosophy), the underlying concept of the High Masters and eventually her idol,...

[Editor’s note: This article includes some light spoilers for Prime Video’s “Upgraded.”]
If there’s one thing that’s true about art and life: Nothing is ever really free. This goes double for art that shows up in film and TV. Each piece either needs to be created purposefully for a project by the art team or licensed from the artist or estate that holds the digital/image reproduction rights to it — unless you want a tattoo artist suing you for copyright infringement for putting an actual Mike Tyson tattoo on Ed Helms’ face.
We take it for granted, but everything that we see on screen is intentional. All the art must either be created by a project’s art team or licensed, whether that be old photographs on a desk, posters on a bedroom wall, graffiti on the side of a building, or, in the case of Carlson Young’s new film, “Upgraded,” multiple galleries full of modern art. If a piece isn’t purpose-made,...

Don’t feel bad if you haven’t heard of the name Hilma af Klint until recently — or before finding your way to “Hilma,” Lasse Hallström’s somewhat syrupy, conventional yet still respectable attempt to broaden the general public’s knowledge of, and affection for, the Swedish abstract artist. If so, you can hardly be blamed for your unawareness, considering af Klint’s longtime (and only recently reversed) obscurity in art circles.
Hers is a story as old as time: A brilliant, ahead-of-her-time woman goes largely ignored despite significant contributions to her field, while her male counterparts claim the spotlight and all the glory. In that regard, it was af Klint herself who invented the notion of abstract painting years before Wassily Kandinsky, one of the most regarded Modernists and abstract painters of all time. And when she died in 1944, her magnificent work was locked away and kept from the public eye for years.

Like most art lovers, the prolific filmmaker Lasse Hallström had never heard of the prolific painter Hilma af Klint (1862-1944) until recently. Af Klint was disregarded, discouraged, sidelined and overlooked during her lifetime, but except for a four-year period, she never stopped creating. She took painting beyond representational still lifes and landscapes and into the uncharted sphere of abstraction, several years before Wassily Kandinsky would claim the mantle of that innovative leap. Her work sat in storage for 20 years after her death, per her instructions, and none of it is for sale.

Exclusive: Juno Films has picked up North American rights to Hilma — the latest film written and directed by three-time Academy Award nominee Lasse Hallström (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape), which is poised to make its North American premiere at the Palm Springs Film Festival.
The cinematic portrait of the Swedish artist and feminist pioneer Hilma af Klint — who’s played at different ages by Tora Hallström and Oscar nominee Lena Olin — will premiere theatrically at the Quad Cinema in NYC on April 14 before expanding nationwide.
Hilma brings to the big screen the life story of a woman who defied conventions and revolutionized the art world when her work was exhibited in its entirety in 2019 at the Guggenheim Museum in NYC. The artist died in 1944, unknown and unrecognized as the woman who invented abstract painting, displacing Kandinsky, Malevich and Mondrian as the initiators of abstract painting and Modernism. The story of abstract artist Hilma af Klint is told in well-appointed if disappointingly routine fashion in Lasse Hallström's biopic. His daughter Tora stars as the artist as a young woman, while she is played in the final days of her life by his wife Lena Olin in scenes that more or less bookend the film.
The meat of the action, however, shows Hilma at the start of her artistic career, which, following a family tragedy in her teens, led her to seek spiritual succour via the seances, which Hallström's suggests were largely the province of women in late 18th century Sweden. In what proves an inspirational creative mix for Hilma, she was also heavily influenced by her scientist grandfather and father, meaning that she was both seeking for the minutiae of the physical and the essence of the spiritual.
The film has feminist ideas at its core as Hilma.

Hilma tells the remarkable story of trailblazing artist Hilma af Klint, which is something of family affair with the film directed by Lasse Hallstrom, and starring his wife Lena Olin, and their daughter Tora, both playing the title role. The film boasts an impressive ensemble, and it’s the ensemble we spent time with – as we spoke to Maeve Dermody, Lily Cole & Tom Wlaschiha about this period piece.
We discussed how important women like Hilma were in history, and what it is about her art that the cast like most. They also talk about their experiences shooting the film – and of course, we couldn’t help but ask Wlaschiha about his experience shooting Stranger Things, and what it’s like starring in shows such as that and Game of Thrones.

Film candyman Lasse Hallström has delivered a cloying but well performed version of the life of Swedish painter Hilma af Klint
The director is all wrong. Just as you wouldn’t call on Quentin Tarantino to make a movie about Monet and his waterlilies, Lasse Hallström is a perplexing choice for a biopic about the Swedish outsider artist Hilma af Klint. Hallström is the soft-centred director of sweet-natured heart-tuggers such as Chocolat and A Dog’s Purpose. Af Klint was completely unknown when she died in 1944, and is now finally getting the recognition she deserves; Tate Modern in London is staging an exhibition of her mystical abstract canvases next year. Under Hallström’s mushy direction, her life story is simplified, sweetened and feelgood-ified.
Still, there are some cracking performances, including by the director’s daughter Tora Hallström, who plays Hilma as a free-spirited carefree young woman with fiercely present, intense blue eyes.

Now available from Madison Gate Records comes Morbius Original Motion Picture Soundtrack – Music by Jon Ekstrand from the latest blockbuster Marvel/Sony superhero film.
The soundtrack features 23 tracks by Ekstrand, who researched sounds that bats make and pushed his orchestra to replicate those sounds using instruments throughout the score.
Also due to the vampiric nature of the infamous Marvel antihero, the Swedish composer was also inspired by classic horror scores by the likes of John Carpenter, leaning in to the character’s monstrous nature rather than creating your expected superhero score.
Directed by Ekstrand’s longtime collaborator Daniel Espinosa, Morbius follows one of the most compelling and conflicted characters in Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters with Oscar® winner Jared Leto transforming into the enigmatic antihero Michael Morbius. Dangerously ill with a rare blood disorder and determined to save others suffering his same fate, Dr. Morbius attempts a desperate gamble.

The rich, varied and enticing lineup of Uruguay’s inaugural Arca Intl. Film Festival underscores one fact from the festival’s get-go: In commercial terms, art-themed movies are not necessarily a backwater niche, reserved for high-brow aesthetes.

Anders Jensen, the sleek and mild-mannered president and CEO of Nent Group, has transformed the company’s Scandinavian streamer, Viaplay, into Netflix’s biggest European competitor since taking its helm in 2018. Jensen, who describes himself as a “content nerd,” is the recipient of Variety’s Vanguard Award, which will be presented at Mipcom in Cannes this year. As previously announced, Lena Olin (“Enemies”) and Tora Hallström will play Klint at different ages of her life.
Now shooting in Stockholm and Vilnius (first still pictured above), the movie is a passion project for Hallström, the celebrated Swedish director of “The Cider House Rules” and “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape.” It explores the enigmatic life of Klint, whose unconventional art remained largely unknown for decades. Klint navigated through a male-dominated artistic scene to eventually become one of the Western world’s first abstract artists.

This documentary convincingly argues that the Swedish painter deserves a place in the mostly male pantheon of artistic genius
This documentary makes a pretty convincing case for the admission of the Swedish artist Hilma af Klint into the boys’ club of abstract art, alongside Kandinsky, Mondrian et al. Af Klint was an outsider in her lifetime and when she died in 1944, her paintings gathered dust in her nephew’s attic. (She did her legacy no favours by stipulating in her will that none of her work should be seen for 20 years.) Today, her work is a nuisance to art history: to acknowledge her would require rewriting the entire chapter on abstract art.
Born in 1862, Af Klint grew up in middle-class privilege, encouraged by her father to paint. After graduating from the Royal Academy in Stockholm, she worked as portrait painter and illustrator before turning to radical abstract works from 1906. A maverick free-thinker,...

Despite these limitations, programmers Jason Anderson and Lisa Haller have put together a strong lineup for 2020 that should hold more than a few surprises for those willing to check out this year’s lineup.
Having seen most of what this year has to offer, here are 10 films that stand out in a slim but competitive field of short filmmaking. For more coverage from the festival, check out our preview of the most-anticipated features and read our forthcoming reviews here.
