The Guild of Music Supervisors Awards revealed its 2025 winners Sunday night (Feb. 23). The 15th annual ceremony was held at The Wiltern in L.A.’s Koreatown and honors the year’s best work in songs and scores for screen.
Sunday’s ceremony began with a video about January’s deadly wildfires, in which guild president Lindsay Wolfington lost her home. She thanked the community for rallying behind her during opening remarks with vp Heather Guibert.
The opening remarks didn’t shy away from addressing the Academy’s decision to “move away” from best original song live performances at the 2025 Oscars. “We are proud that our awards for best song written and or recorded for film and for television, acknowledges the collaborative efforts of the songwriters, the performers, and of course the music,” Guibert told the crowd.

The 30th annual Critics Choice Awards took place on Friday, February 7, at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California. Three films—Wicked, Emilia Pérez, and The Substance—each won three awards. However, none of them claimed the top honor of Best Picture, which went to Anora. Interestingly, Anora didn’t win in any other category that night.
Jon M. Chu, director of Wicked, won Best Director, making him only the third filmmaker to win the award for a musical. The others were Baz Luhrmann for Moulin Rouge! and Damien Chazelle for La La Land. Chazelle later won an Oscar for directing La La Land, but Luhrmann and Chu didn’t even receive Oscar nominations for their films. Wicked also took home awards for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design.
Emilia Pérez won Best Foreign Language Film, Best Original Song for “El Mal”, and Best Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña.

‘It Just Feels Like Dynamite’: Maren Morris and More on Writing ‘The Wild Robot’ Song ‘Kiss the Sky’
Though their first collaboration resulted in one of the most memorable pop crossovers of the 2010s, it had been years since singer Maren Morris had worked with “The Middle” producers Jordan and Stefan Johnson of The Monsters & Strangerz. Not until after the latter party had been brought in by fellow hitmaker Ali Tamposi (co-writer of hits like “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You)” by Kelly Clarkson and “Señorita” by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello) to work on original music for DreamWorks Animation’s “The Wild Robot” did the Johnson brothers pitch a reunion between them and the Nashville superstar, resulting in the emotional rollercoaster ride that is “Kiss the Sky.”
“When we saw the scene for the first time, it was outside. It was in the wilderness. So the idea of it being organic and a bit fingerpicking guitar just came from what we felt like the mood was, just kind of that outdoor feel,...

Songs by Pharrell, Elton John, and Lainey Wilson, as well as multiple selections from Emelia Pérez, have made the Oscars’ shortlist for Best Original Song.
Pharrell’s “Piece by Piece,” the title track from his animated Lego biopic, made the cut, as did John’s “Never Too Late,” co-written with Brandi Carlile and Andrew Watt for his recent documentary. And Wilson secured a shortlist nod for her contribution to Twisters, “Out of Oklahoma,” co-written with Luke Dick and Shane McAnally.

Fresh off of its record-breaking four Golden Globes nominations – the most ever for an animated film – “The Wild Robot” has officially taken the lead in the Best Song race at the Oscars. An impressive 100% of our editors and 96% of experts think the standout track “Kiss The Sky” will be nominated come the official announcement on Jan. 17, according to our current combined odds.
At the beginning of the month, “Emilia Pérez” led the category with “El Mal,” but the acclaimed track from the animated movie has been gaining momentum just as awards season kicks into full gear. “Kiss The Sky” is performed by Maren Morris and written by the team of Delacey, Jordan K. Johnson, Stefan Johnson, Morris, Michael Pollack, and Ali Tamposi.
The song is not only a beautiful anthem of self-empowerment and facing fears, but it also serves as one of the emotional high points in a pivotal scene in the film.

The Golden Globe nominations were announced on Monday, Dec. 9, and as is often the case, Best Original Song is an all-star contest featuring pop stars and songwriters from around the world, including British, French, American, and Swedish composers. Scroll down to listen to all six contenders for the prize.
“Emilia Pérez” may have an advantage with two nominations in this race, for the tunes “El Mal” and “Mi Camino.” The film has 10 nominations overall, setting a new record for musicals and comedies and indicating abundant support for the film. An additional nomination for the film’s original score is further evidence of its strength. That said, with two tunes in this race, there is always the possibility of vote-splitting, which might open the door for another song to upset.
There are two other films in this race with dual noms for song and score: “Challengers” and “The Wild Robot.” The “Challengers” composition,...

As music plays a crucial role in film and television, it is no surprise that many projects already in the conversation have received Golden Globe nominations for their scores and original songs. Nominations for Ariana Grande and Selena Gomez in acting marks a rare occurrence this year of musicians crossing over into acting.
Grande celebrates her first-ever Golden Globe nom for her supporting role as Glinda in Wicked: Part One while Gomez has been double-nominated for her acting in Only Murders in the Building and Emilia Pérez. Gomez will compete with Grande in the supporting actress category, which is a rare moment for music stars. In 2015, Lady Gaga and Queen Latifah both were nominated for Best Performance in a Miniseries or Television Film.

The 2025 Golden Globe nominations have been announced, and all eyes are on this major milestone in the evolving awards season. Jon M. Chu’s musical blockbuster “Wicked” seemed to be the kind of juggernaut the Globes have historically liked to honor — but remember, in 2023 the Hollywood Foreign Press Association disbanded, following Penske Media Eldridge’s purchase of the Globes, and an increase in voting membership improved the diversity of the body selecting the awards. (Penske Media Corporation also owns IndieWire.)
And indeed, “Wicked” only got four nominations when all was said and done. The most noms received by a film were 10 for Best Motion Picture Musical or Comedy nominee “Emilia Pérez,” Jacques Audiard’s musical starring Karla Sofia Gascon, Selena Gomez, and Zoe Saldana. “The Brutalist” also scored big with seven nominations, including for Best Motion Picture Drama, and actors Felicity Jones, Guy Pearce, and Adrien Brody.

Predicting Best Original Song at the Oscars is made more difficult by the three-stage process. In years past, many seemingly sure-fire contenders were deemed to be ineligible. Even those ditties that clear this hurdle then have to pass muster with the 400 plus members of the music branch of the academy. (Scroll down for the most up-to-date 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Original Song.)
