12 Best Bollywood Movies On Netflix
Image
India produces nearly 2,000 movies per year, making it the most prolific film industry in the world. While most films screened in America come from Hollywood, Indian and Bollywood films have continued to grow in popularity in the United States, grossing $100 million at the U.S. box office. Meanwhile, Netflix has amassed a respectable catalog of Bollywood films, though if you're not familiar with the Indian film industry, it can be difficult to know where to begin.

That's where we come in. First, we need to define a Bollywood film. For our purposes, Bollywood films include any Hindi-language films produced in India. Though the term has connotations regarding style, larger-than-life musicals, for example, any Hindi film fits the bill.

India is a country of many languages. Of the nearly 2,000 films produced in India per year, only about 20% of those are Hindi-language (or Bollywood) films. (The Telugu-language action spectacle "Rrr" is a...

Shanaya Kapoor is all set to make her Bollywood debut with Aankhon Ki Gustakhiyan, in which she plays the lead role opposite Vikrant Massey. While most people assumed the role was handed over to the actress, director Santosh Singh revealed otherwise.

In a recent interview with Mid-Day, Singh shared that Shanaya’s talent, perseverance, and sheer hard work won her the part. “The film had its own journey of finding the heroine,” Singh said. “We [initially] had Tara Sutaria and Pratibha Ranta for the role, but their dates didn’t work out. We tested Shanaya and she passed with flying colours.”

He further revealed that Shanaya Kapoor earned her place through a proper audition process and immersed herself in months of rigorous preparation. “We did four months of workshops with her; she also worked with an acting coach.

Hansal Mehta Take Two: Cinema Needs a Reset – Women Leading the Change
Image
Director Hansal Mehta has continued to post his thoughts on X (@mehtahansal) about the fact that the Hindi film industry as a whole needs a reset. This time, he focuses on the actresses in the industry who stand out. He also brings forth the change he feels needs to be made for there to be more challenging and intriguing, full-of-depth roles for actresses. As he said, this is not a list (he hates lists). It is his thoughts on who should be celebrated. As he writes, “It’s about recognizing talent and demanding better.”

“Cinema Needs a Reset – Women Leading the Change

When I wrote my previous post (you can read it here) about emerging male actors, my intention was simple—to illustrate the need for bolder casting choices in Hindi cinema. But, as always, hyperactive voices found a different narrative to latch onto: “Where are the female actors?” That wasn’t the point.

Kiran Rao on How ‘Lost Ladies’ Evolved from a Screenplay Competition to India’s Oscar Pick
Image
On a sidewalk somewhere near the IndieWire offices, there’s a plaque with a quote from Muriel Rukeyser: “The universe is made of stories, not of atoms.” Of the many plaques in the area around the New York Public Library, this is the one that “Lost Ladies” (aka “Laapataa Ladies” as it’s also known) director Kiran Rao walked past on her way to our interview about the award-winning film that became India’s Oscar submission for Best International Feature.

“I thought that was so telling,” Rao said, about the plaque. “That’s one of our great strengths as a species, that we’re able to tell stories, to imagine futures, and it makes me really excited as a director to be part of that.”

Rao has been working consistently in the storytelling business since the late ’90s, when she was an assistant director on Ashutosh Gowariker’s “Lagaan”. She continued as an A.

‘Laapataa Ladies’ Review: A Feel-Good Social Dramedy Represents India at the Oscars
Image
An amusing bridal switcheroo, “Laapataa Ladies” (or “Lost Ladies” in some territories) makes effective use of Bollywood’s broad social messaging. This mode of storytelling can be heavy-handed for the sake of mass appeal, but director Kiran Rao deftly combines the literal and symbolic, resulting in a crowd-pleaser filled — for better or worse — with innate goodness.

Rao returns to the director’s chair for the first time since 2011’s “Dhobi Ghat,” the somber Mumbai diary with heartrending music by Gustavo Santaolalla and Ryuichi Sakamoto. Among the most notable departures from her debut film is that the score for “Laapataa Ladies,” composed by Ram Sampath, has a bouncy and propulsive quality, keeping the movie’s comedic musings on track.

A passenger train plays host to a case of mistaken identity when young, lovelorn newlyweds Deepak Kumar (Sparsh Shrivastava) and Phool Kumari (Nitanshi Goel) are separated in an accidental spouse swap en...

Kiran Rao, Director Of India’s Oscar Entry ‘Lost Ladies’, Talks Awards Race & The 13-Year Journey To Making Her Second Film
Image
Thirteen years after making her debut feature, Kiran Rao marked her directorial return with Laapataa Ladies (Lost Ladies), which has been selected as India’s Oscar entry for the Best International Feature Film race.

“It felt a bit like cycling, after not having cycled for a while,” Rao tells Deadline about helming her second feature film after more than a decade. “It takes a little while to find your balance, but soon you’re on your way. I had a crew that was not just young and enthusiastic, but also really driven by the film and deeply believed in what we were trying to do.”

Lost Ladies follows two brides whose lives become entangled after a late night mix-up on a train, which leads to a series of misadventures where the two brides encounter oddball characters with unexpected

consequences.

“On the surface, it is a story of mistaken identity, but...

‘Lost Ladies’: Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao on Comedy, Production, and Male Allyship as Indian Film Eyes Oscar
Image
The day before filming began for “Lost Ladies,” the director of photography tested positive for Covid.

Suddenly, director Kiran Rao found herself at the top of a front-loaded shooting schedule that included active, bustling train stations in central India — down a D.P., and soon down several cast members while they rotated in and out of isolation and ultimately switched roles. Producer Aamir Khan called it “musical chairs” while marveling at Rao’s ability to put out fires and juggle the day-to-day of set, never halting the shoot throughout. Rao, seated beside Khan at a Q&a for “Lost Ladies” (formerly known as “Laapataa Ladies”) on November 12, smiled and shrugged: “Independent filmmaking!”

“Lost Ladies” tells the story of Phool (Nitanshi Goel) and Jay (Pratibha Ranta), two women who end up swapping places due to a mix-up on a crowded train. Phool ends up stranded at a station with no money,...

Laapataa Ladies (2023)
India Pins Oscar Hopes on ‘Laapataa Ladies’ Comedy
Laapataa Ladies (2023)
India has chosen the comedy film “Laapataa Ladies,” or “Lost Ladies” in English, as its entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2025 Academy Awards. The movie tells the story of two brides who accidentally switch places on a train ride to their husbands’ homes. This mix-up sends the women to unexpected destinations and greatly changes their lives.

Directed by Kiran Rao, “Laapataa Ladies” premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival where reviews praised it. Since then it has proven popular on the international film festival circuit. The movie stars Pratibha Ranta and Nitanshi Goel as Jaya and Phool, the two newlywed women whose faces are covered by identical red veils as they begin their journeys.

India’s selection committee picked “Laapataa Ladies” over Payal Kapadia’s drama “All We Imagine As Light,” previously seen as the front-runner after winning a top prize at the Cannes Film Festival.

Oscars 2025: India Selects ‘Laapataa Ladies’ for Best International Feature Race
Image
India has selected Kiran Rao’s comedy of errors Laapataa Ladies (Lost Ladies) to represent the country in the 2025 Oscar race in the Best International Feature category.

The Hindi-language film, which premiered at last year’s Toronto International Film Festival, beat out Payal Kapadia’s All We Imagine As Light, which had been considered the frontrunner for the Oscar slot, after its rapturous reception in Cannes, where it won the festival’s Grand Jury prize.

But Rao’s feature has proven a crowd-pleaser on the festival circuit. The light satire follows Jaya (Pratibha Ranta) and Phool (Nitanshi Goel): Two new brides, whose faces are hidden behind identical red marital veils, both traveling on the same Indian cross-country rail car to their nuptials, who get accidentally swapped and land at the wrong weddings, setting them on very different destinies. Yash Raj Films picked up international distribution rights to the film,...

ason Shah Recalls ‘Stressful’ Time On Heeramandi Sets! (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Being a part of a massive project like Heeramandi is ideally an achievement, but the memory is bittersweet for Jason Shah. You must remember him as ruthless British officer Alastair Cartwright. The actor did not have the best time on sets despite working with co-stars like Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Manisha Koirala, and others. Scroll below to know why!

Heeramandi boasts an ensemble cast of Manisha Koirala, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sonakshi Sinha, Sharmin Segal, Sanjeeda Sheikh, Jayati Bhatia, Shruti Sharma, Fardeen Khan, Shekhar Suman, Adhyayan Suman, Indresh Malik, Pratibha Ranta, among others. ‘Laapataa Ladies’ Review: A Journey of Rediscovery
Image
Kiran Rao‘s sophomore Laapataa Ladies is a socially relevant tale that navigates the delicate balance between hope and despair, crafting an engaging narrative of fate and empowerment. Dealt with a sharp eye for humor and poignancy, the narrative sheds light on the stifling conditions of patriarchal values. The pivotal events in the film unfold like a series of comically absurd occurrences. But these moments appear plausible because there is a refreshing simplicity, eschewing heavy-handed exposition in favor of subtle exploration. With blistering clarity, the film tackles the underlying practice of age-old traditions, wherein the message within the dramedy of two women in distress never overpowers the overall progression of the story. Rao endows the characters of the film with a sincerity that is resonant in its tone. As they navigate their despairing journey, it reaffirms the value of their existence and the possibility of a life lived with dignity...

'Laapataa Ladies': Kiran Rao triumphs with delightful, nuanced comedy! Ians Rating: ***1/2
Image
New Delhi, March 1 (Ians) Women-centric movies often end up highlighting stereotypes and essentialising people who belong to different gender communities.

But if, as protagonists in a narrative, women get to focus on or are oriented towards issues that confine them to pigeonholes, and also underline their experiences, perspectives and needs, it can truly be called a gynocentric film.

After wowing cinephiles with her directorial debut in ‘Dhobi Ghaat’, Kiran Rao tells a story in ‘Laapata Ladies’ that does not necessarily define feminism, or deal with it, but it sure delights both men and women with nuggets that describe a variety of facets of our lives, including policies, media, art, and organisations that prioritise the voices and concerns of women.

Set in 2001, somewhere in rural India in a fictional place named Nirmal Pradesh (though shot in Madhya Pradesh), ‘Laapata Ladies’ (Lost Ladies) is about Phool (Nitanshi Goel) and Jaya (Pratibha Ranta...

“Kiran Rao’s Laapataa Ladies is a masterpiece” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Laapataa Ladies

Directed by Kiran Rao

It is all about how ‘veil’ you know your bride. The ghunghat is a separate character in Kiran Rao’s masterpiece, a sparkling gem of a film where the minor flaws – for instance, some initial gags on rusticity that seem too touristic—only enhance the feeling of a flawed gem , that rare kind of creation that shines with a genuine spark.

Nothing seems overdone or filmy in Laapataa Ladies, not even Ravi Kishan’s priceless paan-chewing police officer who talks through his stuffed mouth with just that bit of intelligibility that doesn’t make him annoying.

This is Kishan’s best in years. But then, let’s not forget: he is in an extraordinary film about very ordinary people placed in most extraordinary circumstances.

Just think: Phool (Nitanshi Goel) and Jaya (Pratibha Ranta) are two brides in identical wedding sarees and in identical ghunghats...
