Forget about “The Magnificent Seven”: It’s time for The Magnificent Six, competing for the Nordic Council Film Prize this year.

The nominees – consisting of four fiction and two documentary feature films and each representing one of the Nordic countries – were announced by Nordisk Film & TV Fond at the Norwegian International Film Festival in Haugesund.

Denmark is represented by “The Son and the Moon,” directed by Roja Pakari and Emilie Adelina Monies. Written by Pakari – documenting her own struggle with cancer – and Denniz Göl Bertelsen, it’s produced by Sara Stockmann for Sonntag Pictures.

“Twice Colonized” by Lin Alluna, hailing from Greenland, was written by Aaju Peter and Alluna. Pic is produced by Emile Hertling Péronard for Ánorâk Film, Red Marrow Media and EyeSteelFilm.

“I’m extremely happy about the nomination and the fact that Greenland is now, for only the second time, represented at the Nordic Council Film Prize.

Empire, an absurdist period drama about Denmark’s colonial history from filmmaker Frederikke Aspöck and writer Anna Neye, has won the 2023 Nordic Council Film Prize.

The award was announced Tuesday evening during the Nordic Council Prize ceremony at the Opera house in Oslo. The gong was handed to Aspöck and Neye alongside producers Pernille Munk Skydsgaard, Nina Leidersdorff, and Meta Louise Foldager Sørensen.

Speaking of Empire, the council jury said: “It is a rare thing to come across a film that is so confidently and thoroughly thought through in every single detail, and where such an extraordinarily clear vision from the filmmakers behind it shines from every frame. They serve a beautiful, sweet, and colorful treat laced with bitter poison and low-intensity rage. The film is complex and thought-provoking, and the filmmakers do not stumble once while telling their tale about an ugly part of history.”

Former Empire star Jussie Smollett has filed an appeal of his 2021 conviction for faking a hate-crime attack in Chicago in early 2019.

“The renewed prosecution of Mr. Smollett violated his due process rights,” attorney Heather Widell wrote in the court document filed Thursday (read it here), “because (1) Mr. Smollett fully performed his part of a non-prosecution agreement with the state by performing community service and forfeiting his $10,000 bail bond; and (2) the state benefited from taking and keeping Mr. Smollett’s bail bond without performing its end of the bargain. Thus, the violation of due process was prejudicial and requires reversal of Mr. Smollett’s convictions and a dismissal of the charges against him.”

Sweden’s Göteborg Film Festival returned this month after two pandemic-disrupted editions with an accomplished crop of urgent and highly-political competition titles.

On opening night, there was Abbe Hassan’s Exodus, a tender thriller about the lives of refugees in Europe, while Malou Reymann’s Unruly, the eventual winner of the festival’s Dragon Award, uncovers the dark history of institutionalization and women’s rights in Denmark.

Out of the nine films in the main Nordic competition, six dealt directly or indirectly with issues around class, race, gender, and the role they play in a specifically Nordic construction of power; however, none more potent than Frederikke Aspöck’s scorching colonial satire Empire.

Set in 1848 on the Caribbean island of St. Croix, now part of the U.S. Virgin Islands but then a central post of the expanding Danish empire, the pic follows two close friends: Anna Heegaard and Petrine.

Exclusive: REinvent International Sales has picked up Empire, an absurdist period drama about Denmark’s colonial history from Danish filmmaker Frederikke Aspöck.

Conceived and written by Anna Neye, who also stars in the film’s lead role, Empire is set in the Danish West Indies in 1848 and is a story about power and human interdependence that aims to challenge Denmark’s historical amnesia with a mix of earnest drama and absurd comedy.

The film’s full synopsis reads: St. Croix, the Danish West Indies, 1848. Anna Heegaard (Neye) and Petrine (Sara Fanta Traore) are close friends. Both are women of color, but their living conditions are very different – Anna is free and owns the enslaved Petrine. Anna shares her life with Danish Governor General Peter von Scholten at her country house, where she manages the home, her fortune, and her beloved and trusted housekeeper Petrine. Göteborg Film Festival, running from Jan. 27-Feb. 5, will welcome back some familiar faces during its 46th edition. But it keeps on looking out for skillful newcomers, says Josef Kullengård, head of industry at the festival and the Nordic Film Market. “We want to be the place where you discover new Nordic talent,” he tells Variety.

The Göteborg Film Festival has unveiled the 53 Nordic Films that will take part in the latest edition of the Nordic Film Market, running February 2 – 5. Scroll down for the list.

The line-up consists of 17 completed feature films, 15 works in progress, 11 films in development presented at the market’s co-financing platform Discovery, and another 10 features in development from up-and-coming Swedish creators at Talent to Watch.

The 2023 edition of Nordic Film Market will comprise a full on-site event in Göteborg alongside digital screenings on the festival’s dedicated industry platform. This year the festival has said close to 500 invited buyers, distributors, sales agents, producers, festival programmers, and other key industry delegates from 32 countries are expected to attend.

Elsewhere, the 17th edition of the TV Drama Vision summit will run February 1–2.

Göteborg will run January 27 – February 5. As previously announced, Holy Spider breakout Zar Amir Ebrahimi will head the jury of the festival’s Nordic Competition.

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema is partnering with Danish Film Institute on a year-long celebration of Danish cinema to run as a bimonthly curated series of films on recently launched Alamo On Demand VOD.

Goteborg — The 20th Nordic Film Market, held parallel to the Göteborg Film Festival, closed Sunday after three days of screenings and pitchings of 48 Nordic films and projects. Following, five key takeaways or trends:

Standout Nordic Brand Quality

An excellent crop, better than 2018, with a large diversity of content, catering to arthouse/mainstream as well as local/international audiences – these were prevailing reactions from international buyers and programmers polled yesterday in Göteborg. A senior A festival programmer – who asked to remain anonymous- even said: “Today the Nordics are perhaps the strongest region in Europe creatively across TV drama, feature and documentary film.”

Although most titles had already been snatched by the big Nordic sellers – TrustNordisk, LevelK, New Europe Film Sales, The Yellow Affair, Sf Studios – a dozen small offers in post, or in development at the Discovery section, still open for negotiations, made the Göteborg stop-over – fully worthwhile for the 25-plus sales reps in attendance.

“Focus: Nordic Comedy is a tribute to the contemporary Nordic comedy and an attempt to try to understand humor’s social and political role in today’s culture,” says Göteborg fest artistic director Jonas Holmberg. He admits that it was partially conceived as an antidote to the fest’s other focus on the Apocalypse. He says, “The Apocalypse was the first one we came up with. It really engaged us, but we were worried that it might seem too dark or too hopeless.”

He added: Then we realized that the last four out of five winners of the European Film Awards for best comedy came from the Nordic countries; that they were films whose success was not just in their home territories.”

The festival will close with the world premiere of Swedish directors’ Måns Mårlind and Björn Stein’s Swoon on February 4. The period romance is about two young lovers from families who own rival amusement parks.

Frederikke Aspöck has started filming on her dark comedy De Frivillige, which stars Jacob Lohmann, Søren Malling, Christopher Læssø and Anders Matthesen in the lead roles.

The film, written by debutant Lars Husum, follows a celebrity financier and jet-setter who is taken into custody. Following a brutal assault at the hands of a gang of bikers, he ops for voluntary solitary confinement, during which he joins a pirson choir and sets his mind to reaching the top of its hierarchy.

Denmark and Iceland dominate the main competition line-up at Germany’s 57th Nordic Film Days Lübeck, which will open on November 4 with Icelandic director Grimur Hákonarson’s Rams.

Veteran Bulgarian actor Ivaylo Hristov’s third feature film as director, the coming-of-age tale Losers, won the Golden St. George Prize for best film on Friday at the 37th edition of the Moscow International Film Festival (Miff), which ran from June 19-26.

Jury president Jean-Jacques Annaud said that Hristov’s film was “a movie we liked in all aspects – the cinematography [by Emil Hristov], the actors and the direction. We came to an agreement very quickly.”

At last year's Cannes film festival, there was an outcry: there was not a single woman in competition for the Palme d'Or. British director Alicia Duffy screened her debut feature in the Directors' Fortnight strand, and British directors Sophie Fiennes and Lucy Walker both took documentaries, but the main competition was an all-male affair: Mike Leigh, Ken Loach and 17 others. This year – perhaps by chance, perhaps as a corrective measure taken by the selectors – there are four female film-makers in contention: Lynne Ramsay, the British director of We Need to Talk About Kevin; Australian Julia Leigh; France's Maïwenn Le Besco; and Japan's Naomi Kawase. Gilles Jacob and Thierry Frémaux announced that, out of 1715 submissions, 49 features from 33 countries have been selected in total for this year's Cannes Film Festival — four of them made by women, a record. 19 titles are lined up for the Competition so far, leaving room for surprise announcements from here on to the Opening Ceremony on May 11.

I'm not going to Cannes (unless you want to send me, independently wealthy, art film loving reader, in which case, speak up!) but I'd want to see all of those, plus the new film from "Ratcatcher" director Lynne Ramsay and "Drive" by "Bronson"'s Nicolas Winding Refn, which is described on IMDb as the story of "a Hollywood stunt performer who moonlights as a wheelman [and] discovers that a contract has been put on him after a heist gone wrong." The badass cast of that one includes Ryan Gosling, Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Christina Hendricks, and Ron Perlman.

The anticipation of summer isn’t reserved for superheroes and sequels – it’s also the time for the Cannes Film Festival, which is like an actual World Series of international film. Occurring this year from May 11th through May 22nd, this year has many anticipated titles from its list of “all-star” directors that includes Woody Allen, Pedro Almoldovar, Terence Malick, Lars Von Trier, etc. Out of all of these films, I am most excited for Von Trier’s Melancholia, though Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive is a close second.

Released today, here’s the list of films playing at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, with many of these titles bound to be big deals in the movie world during and after their premieres:

Earlier we reported that Restless and Kung Fu Panda 2 had been added to the Cannes Film Festival lineup that included The Tree of Life and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Today, we have the full lineup for the festival. The majority of the films are ones I have not heard of, but there are some exceptions. Jodie Foster's The Beaver, Sleeping Beauty and Drive by Nicolas Winding Refn. Takasi Miike and Pedro Almodovar also have films in competition at the festival.

The 64th Festival de Cannes has unveiled its lineup for 2011. Although it boasts of big names like Pedro Almodovar and Lars Von Trier, no Indian film has found a place in it.

Vikramadiya Motwane’s Udaan had been screened at Un Certain Regard section last year.

The line up for the 64th Cannes Film Festival was announced today in Paris. Some of the familiar faces headed to the South of France this year include the Dardenne brothers, Nicolas Winding Refn, Pedro Almodovar and Terrence Malick who all have films in competition. Jodi Foster‘s The Beaver and Rob Marshall‘s installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise will play out of competition. While Gus Van Stant, Bruno Dumont and Sean Durkin will have films in Un Certain Regard.

Hot off the presses…! Earlier this morning, the lineup of the 64th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, which will run from May 11th to the 22nd, was announced, and it’s a mostly good one!

I’m especially excited about the festival this year, because, as I’ve already announced, Shadow And Act will be at Cannes this year for the first time, and hopefully not the last! MsWOO will be there, delivering the best coverage you’ll find online (and that’s no hyperbole ), particularly from an African Diasporic Pov. So, you should be excited too!

Several familiar names and Cannes alumni will be returning with titles this year, from Pedro Almodovar to Aki Kaurismäki, the Dardenne Brothers, Lars von Trier and others. Woody Allen’s Midnight In Paris is the opening night film; he’s certainly no stranger to the festival.

As for “black representation” this year…...

The Official Selection and the Juries of the 64th Cannes Film festival were announced Thursday, April 14th during the press conference held by Gilles Jacob and Thierry Frémaux at the Grand Hôtel in Paris.

Hollywoodnews.com: Some films were expected (hello, “The Tree of Life”). Some were complete surprises (Almodovar’s “The Skin I Live In”). But just about every title announced as part of the 64th Cannes Film Festival carried serious weight and anticipation.

Malick, Almodovar, Miike, Von Trier, Ramsay and Allen are the heavy hitters in Cannes’ official Competition.

Outside the boundaries, Cannes will be hosting the world premiere of the fourth “Pirates” film, with Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz expected to attend. And Jodie Foster continues her “Beaver” press tour with a stop on the Croistette. Is that a good fit?

This morning (as I type for that matter), the 64th annual Cannes Film Festival 2011 had it’s line up announced for the event which takes place 11th – 22nd May. We’ll be going along courtesy of Stella Artois for the opening weekend and we’re extremely excited about it!

Before announcing the list, Thierry Frémaux told us that there were 1715 films submitted for consideration into the festival from 33 different countries. In all, 19 films were accepted with four of them being directed by female directors which is apparently a record for Cannes.

So, without further ado, here’s the line up which I’ll update as an when they come in.

Hot on the heels of the news that Gus Van Sant’s Restless will be opening Un Certain Regard at this year’s 64th Cannes Film Festival, comes the complete line up...

A press conference was called this morning in Paris to announce which films and their respective categories will be showcased next month.

Amongst the films In Competition are; Terrence Malick’s Tree of Life, starring Brad Pitt, Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain, and Lars Von Trier’s Melancholia, starring Kirsten Dunst, Kiefer Sutherland and Charlotte Gainsbourg.

Other big names include; Pedro Almodovar, the Dardenne Brothers and Nicolas Winding Refn.

Joining the line-up for films Out of Competition are; Jodie Foster’s The Beaver, starring Mel Gibson as a troubled man who finds solace in a puppet, and Jerry Bruckheimer’s Blockbuster adventure, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
