'The Mummy's Brendan Fraser Explains Why Tom Cruise’s 15% Rotten Tomatoes Reboot Failed [Exclusive]
Image
Before The Mummy launched the Dark Universe into a coffin-sized crater at the box office, it was Brendan Fraser’s swashbuckling 1999 version that had fans clinging to their seats — and loving every second of it. At Fan Expo Denver, The Mummy cast — Fraser, John Hannah, Patricia Velasquez, and Oded Fehr — reunited on stage, moderated by Collider’s Maggie Lovitt, to look back at the franchise’s enduring appeal. Naturally, the conversation turned to Universal’s failed attempt to build a cinematic monster universe with The Mummy (2017), Dr. Jekyll, The Invisible Man(almost), and…well, that’s about it.

When asked if any sort of crossover was ever on the table during their era — possibly even one with Hugh Jackman’sVan Helsing — Fraser made it clear that whatever the ambitions of the newer version were, they didn’t quite understand the assignment. “I really don’t know. I know Tom Cruise...

Tom Cruise & ‘The Mummy’: A Monster Movie for All
Tom Cruise at an event for Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Image Source: Universal Pictures Tom Cruise. His name alone brings to mind jaw-dropping stunts, a legendary grin, and an endless list of blockbuster hits. He’s a titan of cinema, a box office icon. While we can all list his most legendary roles, in 2017, Cruise ventured into intriguing new territory—into the dark world of ancient curses and resurrected horrors. Enter The Mummy. This wasn’t just another action-packed thrill ride; it was Cruise’s rare step into the horror genre, a realm he hadn’t explored since his turn in Interview with the Vampire. Starring alongside Oscar winner Russell Crowe and a talented ensemble cast, Cruise took on the role of U.S. Army Sergeant Nick Morton, a treasure-hunting soldier whose greed unleashes an unimaginable evil—an entombed Egyptian princess, Ahmanet, eager to wreak havoc. Billed as a heart-pounding blend of horror, action, and mythology, The Mummy promised to whisk...

'The Mummy' Box Office Bomb With Tom Cruise has Found New Life on Streaming
Image
Once upon a time, Universal was prepping its own Avengers-style cinematic universe featuring their famous classic movie monsters. The studio started making some movies as they planned films that would make up the Dark Universe, and initially positioned Dracula Untold(2014) with star Luke Evans as the first film before officially making Tom Cruise's The Mummy the Iron Man of the Dark Universe. There was a magazine cover featuring an A-list cast who would be headlining films like Bride of Frankensteinand The Invisible Man. But then The Mummy opened in June 2017 and it bombed. Badly. And the brakes were hit on the Dark Universe. However, now it's a streaming hit on Hulu, sitting at number six on the streamer's Top 10 chart.

Prior to The Mummy opening, the thought of Cruise, Russell Crowe, and Sofia Boutella starring in a new version of a beloved film that helped launch Brendan Frasier's career into orbit,...

“This stuff is hideous”: 8th Best Selling Shark Tank Product Turned Mark Cuban Against Kevin O’Leary
Image
When we think of Christmas, we think of many things. Eggnog, presents, gingerbread houses, and of course, ugly Christmas sweaters. It has become almost a custom to flaunt your ugliest sweaters, riddled with insufferable puns and questionable designs, on the wholesome holiday. When a company specializing in these sweaters found its way to Shark Tank, you know just how much the population is in need of a good ugly Christmas sweater!

Shark Tank season 5 episode 12 | Credits: Shark Tank Global / YouTube / ABC

Shark Tank has given many companies just what they needed to make it big in the industry and Tipsy Elves is one of them. Founders Evan Mendelsohn and Nick Morton walked into the Sharks’ tank and asked for a $100K for 5% of their company’s equity. While they did get themselves a deal, it didn’t happen before the pitch turned ugly.

How ‘Tipsy Elves’ almost caused a rift...

New Mummy Movie From Evil Dead Rise Director Announced By Blumhouse
Image
A little over seven years after the last attempt to reboot the property failed, Blumhouse have revealed they're working on a new Mummy movie. The horror franchise first launched in 1932 and was part of the Universal Classic Monsters collection, with Boris Karloff portraying the titular entity before passing the reins on to Tom Tyler, Lon Chaney Jr. and Eddie Parker. The years since have seen two rebooted versions of The Mummy franchise, beginning with the Brendan Fraser-led movies from Stephen Sommers, which also included the Scorpion King spinoffs, and Tom Cruise's failed 2017 reboot meant to launch the interconnected Dark Universe.

The official Blumhouse Twitter page have unveiled that a new Mummy movie is in the works from writer/director Lee Cronin, who recently excelled with Evil Dead Rise. The post features a script page with the title scratched out featuring Cronin's credit with "Original Screenplay by" and both...

It’s a Miracle Russell Crowe Agreed to Star in a Tom Cruise Movie After His Public Hatred for Him: ‘He never forgave Tom’
Image
Russell Crowe gained critical acclaim for his performance in films like Gladiator, which won him his first Academy Award. The Australian actor has also tasted commercial success and established himself as one of the finest leading men of the 1990s and 2000s. As a result, Crowe became a contemporary and friend of actor Tom Cruise.

Gladiator star Russell Crowe allegedly hated Tom Cruise (Credit: Universal Pictures).

However, Crowe and Cruise allegedly did not see eye to eye following an incident in the latter’s personal life. As a result, it was widely reported that the Crowe hated Cruise and held a grudge against him. Therefore, it is a miracle that the two worked together in the ill-fated 2017 film The Mummy. Here is everything you need to know about the tension between Russell Crowe and Tom Cruise.

Brendan Fraser's The Mummy Trilogy is Now Streaming on Peacock
Image
After much demand from the fan base, The Mummy (1999), the timeless action/adventure hit starring Brendan Fraser, is returning to streaming. Directed by Stephen Sommers, The Mummy is now streaming again, finding a new home on Peacock. Alongside Brendan Fraser, the movie also stars Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, Arnold Vosloo, Kevin J. O'Connor, and Omid Djalili.

Fraser plays Rick O'Connell, a debonnaire adventurer, who's enlisted by English librarian Evelyn Carnahan (Weisz) to oversee an archaeological dig site in the ancient city of Hamunaptra. In close competition with a rival group of explorers, Rick, Evelyn, and her brother Jonathan (Hannah), are faced with a three millennium-old danger as the rival explorers accidentally unleash an ancient curse placed upon the dead High Priest Imhotep. As the curse releases ten devastating plagues on modern day Egypt, Rick, Evelyn, and Jonathan are forced to fight for their survival against ancient powers. The Mummy blends...

1 Failed Tom Cruise Movie Franchise Proves His Star Power Better Than Top Gun & Mission Impossible
Image
Tom Cruise's star power was evident in the success of the Mission Impossible franchise, but his ability to draw audiences was also apparent in the box office numbers of the critically panned film, The Mummy. The Mummy, despite being a critical failure, grossed a significant amount of money thanks to Tom Cruise's star power. The film's box office success underscores the impact that he has, regardless of the quality of the movie. Even Tom Cruise's star power couldn't have saved Universal's Dark Universe. The Mummy's flaws extended beyond Cruise's performance, and the ambitious cinematic universe would have likely crumbled even if the film had been a success.

Tom Cruise is one of the biggest and most profitable actors in the film industry, and curiously enough, one failed movie franchise proves his star power better than his two most popular franchises. Tom Cruise’s acting career started...

The Mummy 2017 Ending Explained
Image
The ending of The Mummy (2017) sets up a shared universe team-up that never happened due to the film's box office flop and critical lashing. Nick stabbing himself with the Dagger of Set doesn't accomplish Ahmanet's plan because he resists and gains control of his own body and powers. Nick's transformation leaves him unsure of what he has become, with powers similar to Ahmanet but still uncertain about his alignment and future choices.

The ending of The Mummy (2017) gives Tom Cruise's Nick Morton the power of the Egyptian god of death, Set, setting up a shared universe team-up that never happened. While The Mummy (2017) was meant to kickstart Universal's Dark Universe before an McU-style crossover between universal monsters like The Invisible Man (to be played by Johnny Depp) and Frankenstein’s Monster (played by Javier Bardem), the box office flop and critical lashing of The Mummy ended those plans almost before they started.

10 Most Unnecessary Remakes Of Classic Movies
Image
Some movie remakes, like King Kong and A Star is Born, are praised for their refreshing take on the original story, while others are seen as unnecessary and disappointing. Remakes such as Fame (2009) and The Mummy (2017) failed to capture the essence of the original films, lacking proper character development and stripping away what made them successful. Remaking iconic horror films like Poltergeist and Psycho often fall flat, lacking the terror and suspense of the originals, and are regarded as pointless and unnecessary.

In Hollywood, many remakes of classic movies have been released over the years, but there are a number of remakes that were unnecessary as they either didn't add anything new or didn't honor the source material. Some remakes can retell a classic story, some can add a new twist, and some can re-imagine the story differently from the original. The success of a remake depends on its similarities to the source material,...

The Mummy's Failed 2017 Reboot Proved The Harsh Truth Of The Franchise's Future After 24 Years
Image
The failure of The Mummy's 2017 reboot showed that the original cast and characters are irreplaceable, as it was their fun factor that made the original movie a hit. A sequel would be a better option than another reboot, as it would retain the beloved cast and characters while continuing the successful story arcs of the franchise. While there may still be some hope for The Mummy 4, the decline in critical ratings and box office numbers of the previous movies suggests that audiences may be experiencing franchise fatigue. Brendan Fraser's return may be the only compelling reason to watch it.

The Mummy's 2017 reboot revealed a harsh truth about its parent franchise and its potential future. Despite being a retelling of the 1932 Mummy, 1999's The Mummy breathed new life into the original horror movie franchise with its modern and relatively more comical take on the monster sub-genre. However, long...

Why Tom Cruise’s 2017 Box Office Bomb Is Easily His Worst Film of All Time
Image
While Tom Cruise has certainly possessed the tangible qualities that are required for superstardom, the enduring nature of Cruise’s stardom is also attributable to Cruise’s keen Hollywood instincts and his absolute insistence on applying quality control to every aspect of his career.

Cruise has worked with virtually every great filmmaker from the past forty years, from Martin Scorsese to Oliver Stone to Stanley Kubrick to Steven Spielberg, and while Cruise has certainly had disappointments, Cruise’s film failures almost always reflect a star who is trying to do too much, never too little.

In this context, 2017’s The Mummy represents an appalling anomaly in Cruise’s career. Incoherent, sloppy, and technically incompetent, The Mummy represents a complete abdication of the principles that have guided Cruise’s career since his star-making appearance in Risky Business.

Moreover, the ultimate effect of The Mummy is that of morbid fascination, both in...

Why Tom Cruise Has Never Appeared In a Mission: Impossible Game
Image
The world of spy films is currently dominated by two franchises: James Bond and Mission: Impossible. Both are based on different mediums, but both have received multiple video game adaptations over the years. However, while the much more successful James Bond games have historically recreated the faces of the Bond actors with pixelated approximations, the Mission: Impossible games have never featured a recreation (or even an approximation) of Tom Cruise.

Actually, despite the fact that there are several games based on various Tom Cruise movies, the superstar actor has not only never appeared in a video game but has never had his likeness recreated in a video game. Why is that?

For additional context, the James Bond films have been running strong since 1962, and six (seven if you count David Niven) actors have starred as the titular character in major movies so far. While Sean Connery arguably remains film’s most iconic Bond actor,...

The Mummy 4 Would Need To Fix 1 Tom Cruise Reboot Mistake
Image
The Mummy 4 may become a reality in the coming years, but if it is to be a success, it would need to learn from the mistakes made by the 2017 The Mummy remake. The failed Dark Universe film starring Tom Cruise as the new lead, Nick Morton, is regarded as a box office bomb, since it only earned a domestic gross of 80 million. This is a far cry from the success of the 1999 The Mummy, and actor Brendan Fraser has guessed why these films achieved such different results.

Original The Mummy star Brendan Fraser voiced his enthusiasm for returning to the franchise, as long as the writers could develop a good concept. He noted that he had watched Tom Cruise's adventure fighting the undead in 2017's The Mummy remake, and felt it lacked some of the essential ingredients that made the original The Mummy such a success. Fraser's comments offer some...

The Sweet Story Behind Rhea Seehorn’s *Other* Emmy Nomination
Image
In between filming Seasons 5 and 6 of “Better Call Saul,” Rhea Seehorn had no way of knowing that she was prepping for not one, but two Emmy-nominated roles at the same time. That down time away from her work on the beloved AMC show gave her the chance to be part of the team behind “Cooper’s Bar,” a six-episode short-form show airing on AMC+ about a backyard hangout spot that becomes part of a studio development bidding war.

“We did all that work on hiatus, then continue to have a couple of Zoom meetings throughout Season 6 of ‘Saul’ so that the second I got back, we could do some physical production prep, and then go ahead and shoot it,” Seehorn said. “The majority of the people that are on ‘Cooper’s Bar’ are friends of mine, and we just wanted to do something together. So we had a blast.”

“Cooper’s Bar” is...

Better Call Saul’s final season concludes the complicated journey and transformation of its compromised hero, Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk), into criminal lawyer Saul Goodman. From the cartel to the courthouse, from Albuquerque to Omaha, Season 6 tracks Jimmy and...

‘Better Call Saul’ Final Season Gets Premiere Dates for Both Halves
Image
AMC has finally set the premiere for the sixth and final season of “Better Call Saul” — as well as the second half of the sixth and final season of “Better Call Saul” — after teasing fans mercilessly with the information earlier this week. As an added bonus, the cable channel also revealed first-look images from the sixth season (see above) and unveiled upcoming digital series set in the “Breaking Bad” prequel’s universe.

On Thursday, AMC announced that the seven-episode Part 1 of “Better Call Saul” Season 6 will premiere on April 18 at 9 p.m. Et. on AMC and AMC Plus. Back-to-back episodes will air that night. Once that first half of the final season has run its course, Part 2 won’t be too far behind, as the final six episodes of “Better Call Saul” will begin rolling out on July 11.

‘Better Call Saul’s’ Rhea Seehorn Shows a Meaner Side in Short-Form ‘Cooper’s Bar’ for AMC
Image
On “Better Call Saul,” Rhea Seehorn plays Kim Wexler, the character with perhaps the show’s highest moral compass. But on her latest series, “Cooper’s Bar,” Seehorn has gone in a completely different direction.

“I’m an absolute asshole in it; I am horrible, which is fun,” she says. Actually, the marketing deck for “Cooper’s Bar” goes even further than that, calling Seehorn’s character, TV executive Kris, the “biggest dick in Hollywood.”

“It’s incredibly different from Kim Wexler,” she says. “It’s definitely fun, when I’m am churning and wringing hands about Kim Wexler, to be working on these scripts for ‘Cooper’s Bar’ and thinking about Kris, somebody that steps over recliners and just screams and yells at people and has no tact whatsoever.”

“Cooper’s Bar” is an original short-form digital series produced for AMC that will be timed to run next spring...

La Momie (1999)
How Hubris Undid the Dark Universe Movies
La Momie (1999)
The Dark Universe, Universal’s would-be monster movie franchise, may have only fallen apart a scant four years ago with 2017’s The Mummy, but the mindset behind its conception now feels like a notion from a completely different age. That logic, of course, implied that lucrative, Marvel Cinematic Universe-like film franchises could be conjured from just about any intellectual property. Interestingly, one of the writers involved, Eric Heisserer, believes the Dark Universe imploded behind the scenes well before it did at the box office.

Heisserer, who’s serving as showrunner for franchise-aspiring Netflix television adaptation Shadow and Bone, had just broken big with his Oscar-nominated screenplay for 2016 sci-fi drama Arrival and horror film Lights Out when he was tapped to co-write (with Jon Spaihts) a Dark Universe reboot movie for vampire hunter Van Helsing, which Channing Tatum was expected to headline. The gig put him in a dream team writer...

Leigh Whannell
Universal Monsters: The Invisible Man Shows Life After Dark Universe Death
Leigh Whannell
Over the last weekend, an eerie thing happened at the box office: Leigh Whannell and Blumhouse Productions’ The Invisible Man brought the Universal Monsters legacy back with a vengeance. Over-performing with a monstrous box office bow of $29 million in the U.S. alone, the horror reimagining of the H.G. Wells novel (and James Whale’s 1933 film) more than quadrupled its $7 million budget in only three days.

This is of course good news about a good horror movie, one of the best in a while with its panic attack-inducing allegory about a woman being gaslighted by an abusive ex. But it’s also rather miraculous news for the Universal Monsters label, which has by and large languished in the 21st century despite multiple attempts to resurrect it from the dead. Indeed, just three years after the Dark Universe was embarrassingly put out to pasture following The Mummy’s disastrous June 2017 debut,...

Steve James in American Warrior II: Le Chasseur (1986)
Sundance 2018: Tessa Thompson, Alia Shawkat, and More Binge Watch the Festival’s First Indie TV Section
Steve James in American Warrior II: Le Chasseur (1986)
Steve James had a helluva 24 hours. On Monday morning, the director’s first-ever docuseries “America To Me” was picked up by Starz. That night, his series kicked off the first-ever Sundance Episodic screening, and the next morning — as the fourth and fifth episodes were about to commence in Park City — James received his first-ever Oscar nomination for “Abacus: Small Enough to Jail.”

“This has been a pretty good two days at the Sundance Film Festival,” James said, after being introduced and congratulated by Participant Media’s Diane Weyermann. James wiped his face as the crowd gave him a standing ovation, and then things got started.

After years of experimenting with TV screenings, Sundance unveiled its inaugural lineup of independent TV pilots, short-form series, and premieres on Tuesday. Programmed in groups with two-to-four series per screening, the Episodic Section ran in its entirety in two locations on Tuesday. Attendees could see...

Invisible Man Movie Loses Writer Amidst Dark Universe Shakeup
For a time, it looked like Universal's Dark Universe was going to be a huge franchise to keep an eye on, with the studio developing new reboots based on the countless horror icons in their library, such as Dracula, Frankenstein and The Invisible Man, just to name a few. The studio got off to a shaky start with The Mummy, which has had quite an impact on the franchise as a whole, with The Invisible Man writer Ed Solomon confirming he is no longer attached to the project, and that he believes the studio is, "re-configuring" the entire franchise. Here's what he had to say below.

"At the end of the day, I think Universal and I had a different idea of what the movie was gonna be. We began thinking that our notions would meld, and I should've listened more closely to what they really were wanting. I...

The Park City film fest has previously dabbled in what’s possible on the small screen, but this year marks the launch of the Indie Episodics section — which will spotlight TV pilots that mostly lack mainstream distribution.

The selections include “America to Me,” a new docu-series by “Hoop Dreams” director Steve James; as well as “The Mortified Guide,” a screen adaptation of the popular stage show “Mortified,” spotlighting the most embarrassing true stories of adolescence. There’s also “This Close,” showcasing star/creators Josh Feldman and Shoshannah Stern (both of whom are deaf), and “Franchesca,” featuring digital star and “The Nightly Show” writer/contributor Franchesca Ramsey.

This marks a major change for Sundance, and a renewed commitment to independent television. While Sundance has featured TV programming since the premiere of “Top of the Lake” in...

This version sees U.S. military Sergeant Nick Morton (Tom Cruise) and his partner get […]

Review: The Mummy (2017) is an Exciting and Entertaining Start to the Dark Universe
I’ll be the first to admit I was rather skeptical going into Alex Kurtzman’s The Mummy, as the trailers seemed to be far more focused on the action instead of the horror to the story. But thankfully, my fears about the direction this new Mummy would take were quickly quelled about 25 minutes into the film, when I realized that this brand new Dark Universe that Universal is set to unleash was starting off on the right foot, because I was having a helluva fun time and was completely immersed in this world.

And while there was a lot of action to be found (I mean, it’s a Tom Cruise movie, and honestly, no one goes for the cinematic gusto quite the way he does), it’s apparent early on that Kurtzman wasn’t screwing around when it came to the horror aspects of The Mummy, making this...

First Trailer for Cold Comes the Night with Alice Eve and Bryan Cranston
Sony Pictures have announced that they have acquired the worldwide rights to Tze Chun’s Cold Comes the Night, and along with the announcement comes a very promising first trailer.

Alice Eve and Bryan Cranston look to be great in the joint leads, with Cranston taking much more of a central role than the more frequent supporting roles we’ve seen from him in recent years. And that can only be good news.

Cold Comes the Night tells the story of a struggling motel owner (Eve) who, along with her daughter (Parker), is taken hostage by a career criminal (Cranston) as he attempts to retrieve his cash package from a crooked cop (Marshall-Green). Everyone gets in over their heads, and a series of double-crosses leaves a string of dead bodies in this pulse-pounding story about desperation and survival.

Eve and Cranston star alongside Logan Marshall-Green and Ursula Parker.

Chun is making his sophomore feature,...

Jodie Foster
Death Sentence
Jodie Foster
NEW YORK -- Crime rates might be dropping nationwide, but you wouldn't know from the new wave of vigilante-themed films that has inexplicably begun. Beating the Jodie Foster starrer The Brave One by a couple of weeks, James Wan's Death Sentence demonstrates that first is not necessarily best.

This effort starring Kevin Bacon bears more than a slight connection to the landmark of the genre, 1974's Death Wish, starring Charles Bronson. It is based on novelist Brian Garfield's sequel to his original book, though any resemblance is tenuous at best.

Bacon plays Nick Hume, a family man with a loving wife (Kelly Preston) and two kids who, in the screenplay's obvious attempt at irony, works at an insurance company where he must constantly compute the odds for catastrophe. His own life comes crashing down late one night when, stopping at a gas station in an unsafe neighborhood, his eldest son (Stuart Lafferty) is brutally murdered by Joe Darley (Matt O'Leary), a young hoodlum undergoing a gang initiation.

Nick impulsively recants his witness testimony at a pretrial hearing, setting the stage for him to achieve vengeance on his own. He follows the culprit to a deserted location the next night and winds up stabbing him to death after an intense struggle. It doesn't take long before the gang's leader, Billy (Garrett Hedlund), who also happens to be Joe's brother, figures out who did it, leading to a series of ever-escalating violent confrontations between Nick and the gang members.

While it certainly was an exploitation picture, Death Wish was highly effective because it always stayed grounded in reality. Director Wan ("Saw") inevitably goes for a more heightened approach. The gang members look like something out of Mad Max; Nick almost is instantly transformed from a mild-mannered insurance executive to a rampaging action hero, ultimately resembling a cross between Rambo and Travis Bickle; and the highly stylized visuals are luridly gothic. The nearly constant violence, too, is of the highly graphic variety, with endless amounts of blood spurting, exploding body parts and severed limbs. What makes the proceedings even more ludicrous is the screenplay's half-hearted attempt to infuse depth into its depiction of Nick's transformation.

The one truly effective sequence is a thrilling foot chase in which Bacon is pursued by the gang through streets, alleyways, buildings and an open-air parking garage, a good part of which was filmed by Wan and his team of cameramen in a virtuosic single take.

Bacon goes through his frequently athletic paces with the requisite intensity; Hedlund makes a formidably scary villain, and John Goodman has a terrifically pungent cameo as a skuzzy gun dealer. Aisha Tyler plays a concerned police detective; judging by the plethora of beautiful young black detectives onscreen these days, our nation's police forces must have effective equal-hiring practices.
