The Trunk Review: Unpacking Trauma and Healing in Modern Relationships
Image
In a crowded cinematic world, The Trunk is a unique psychological thriller and romance that expertly weaves complicated plots with profound emotional undercurrents. Adapted from Kim Ryeo-ryeong’s novel, this Netflix series follows the life of Han Jeong-won, a troubled music producer played by Gong Yoo, who is always captivating.

Set against a backdrop of lavish yet unsettling surroundings, the story digs into the complexities of a prearranged marriage planned by Jeong-won’s manipulative ex-wife, Seo-yeon. This scenario not only catalyzes character development but also reflects bigger societal themes such as love, trauma, and the commodification of relationships.

The Trunk expertly navigates the genres of psychological thriller and romance, creating a tone alternating between gripping tension and sweet intimacy. The series’ visual storytelling conveys the essence of psychological uneasiness, while its nonlinear narrative structure echoes the characters’ shattered lives. This method encourages viewers to piece together the fractured histories and motives,...

‘The Trunk’ Netflix Review: R-rated K-drama Is Compelling In Storytelling But Fizzles Out
Image
Imagine you live in a world where contract marriages don’t even turn heads. Where the institute itself is to be improved upon. Where you can be married to someone for a year and then forget about them forever. The Trunk tells the story of a man who is forced into a contract marriage by his ex-wife as a test for them to get back together a year later (I know!). However, this contract marriage completely changes this man, Jeong-Won’s life. The series begins with the titular mysterious trunk being found in the middle of a lake. The series follows two mysteries, one of the trunk and one of the marriage itself.

Seo Hyun-Jin’s highly anticipated comeback with Hallyu superstar Gong Yoo has finally graced our screens, and fans will not be disappointed. The mystery series dives straight into the story without wasting any time. Visually, this K-drama...

The Trunk Cast & Character Guide
Image
The Trunk has a stellar cast that features renowned South Korean actors led by Gong Yoo and See Hyeon-jin. Based on The Trunk by Kim Ryeo-ryeong, the Netflix K-drama follows Han Jeong-won, a music producer who gets intertwined in a one-year marriage contract orchestrated by a company called New Marriage (Nm). As the two characters get to know each other, they come across a trunk which helps them discover that the marriage agency has some dark secrets.

The Trunk explores the complexities of marriage, and the actors are perfectly suited to bring director Kim Kyu-tae’s vision to life. Goblin’s Gong Yoo, who plays the male lead in the series, carefully chooses his roles. So the fact that he is part of The Trunk’s cast shows that the Netflix miniseries has something special. The series features other renowned K-drama actors, including Seo Hyun-jin, Jung Yun-ha, and Hong Woo-jin.

Im Confident Gong Yoos Long-Awaited Comeback Will Be One Of 2024s Best K-Dramas
Image
The Trunk marks Gong Yoos return to screen three years after The Silent Sea, and I predict it to be one of the best K-dramas of 2024. The three-year wait for Gong Yoo to star or at least appear in another major K-drama will be worth it as the actor will be in not only one but two shows before the year ends. Gong Yoo will star in The Trunk and Squid Game 2, which will be released a month from each other on November 29 and December 26, respectively.

Squid Game season 2 will close a very strong year for Netflix when it comes to K-dramas. From original webseries such as Parasyte: The Grey, Sweet Home 3, and The Frog to licensed shows such as Queen of Tears and Love Next Door, some of the best K-dramas of 2024 were available on Netflix. As a big Gong Yoo fan, however, one of my most anticipated shows...
