How to Train Your Dragon focuses on the special friendship between a young and unheroic Viking boy named Hiccup, and Toothless, an injured dragon he nurses back to health. The movies chronicled Hiccup and Toothless’ quest to combat humanity’s prejudice against dragons, the ache of overcoming the loss of a parent, and first love.

Fans of the original animated How to Train Your Dragon film waiting to see how the live-action version separates itself will have to wait a while longer. The cast also includes Nico Parker, Nick Frost, Julian Dennison, Gabriel Howell, Bronwyn James, Harry Trevaldwyn, Ruth Codd, Peter Serafinowicz, and Murray McArthur. The new trailer and poster for the live-action How to Train Your Dragon have finally been unleashed (via SFFGazette.com), and all signs point to the movie doing right by the beloved DreamWorks Animation classic...by not being all that different from it.
Toothless looks amazing, as do the rest of the dragons that take centre stage here. All signs point to this being an epic fantasy movie in its own right, and regardless of how much the original How to Train Your Dragon achieved on screen in 2010, the visuals showcased in this sneak peek are on a completely different level.
In terms of the human characters, it appears as if we can expect their personality and relationships to be better fleshed out in this reimagining. Filmmaker Dean DeBlois confirmed that was a priority during a recent interview with The Wrap.

Live-action remakes aren’t just Disney’s anymore. Universal debuted a full look at the reimagining of DreamWorks Animation’s beloved “How to Train Your Dragon” during the Super Bowl, releasing a stirring new trailer after a spot during the NFL championship game.
Like the original film from 2010, this remake follows the isle of Berk, where vikings and dragons have long been enemies. But when Hiccup (Mason Thames) goes against centuries of tradition to befriend Toothless, a Night Fury dragon, he disrupts the community and opens up new possibilities for both vikings and dragons alike. The teaser shows their initial meeting, with a wary Hiccup gently reaching out to touch Toothless on the snout, slowly earning his trust.
“I’m the first viking who wouldn’t kill a dragon,” Hiccup says.
And he’s rewarded for his decision. Together, Toothless and Hiccup soar through the sky, barreling past rocky cliffs and roaring oceans,...

The latest trailer for Universal's live-action update of "How to Train Your Dragon" is here, once again making us wonder: Why do we need this movie when the animated version is already great? The new footage offers no answers, but by dropping during Super Bowl Lix, it'll no doubt inspire a few million more people to ask the question.
Admittedly, this new installment in the franchise (which began with the cartoon feature of the same name in 2010) does have a few things going for it, including the return of original trilogy writer-director Dean DeBlois and an animation style that somehow manages to capture the overwhelming cuteness of its heroic black dragon, Toothless.
The first trailer for the live-action "How to Train Your Dragon," which dropped in November 2024 before screening in theaters with Universal's "Wicked," didn't stray from the original film much at all in terms of its visuals or plot beats.

Not that Disney invented live-action remakes of animated movies, but the studio largely popularized the concept. Disney started making $1 billion hits in the 2010s like Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" and it's been big business for them ever since. It was only natural that other studios would eventually follow suit. To that end, Universal and DreamWorks are bringing a live-action remake of "How to Train Your Dragon" to theaters this summer. Whether or not it can live up to the original remains to be seen, but at least one of the movie's stars is impressed.
Gerard Butler voiced the Viking leader Stoick in the "How to Train Your Dragon" trilogy, and he's reprising the role in the remake. Even though most of the original voice cast has been replaced in the live-action version, Butler, with some makeup and the right costume, looked the part enough to be able to return.

The idea of animated features getting live-action remakes is nothing new, but the production of live-action remakes has obviously shifted into overdrive in recent years, with Disney bringing us the likes of Cinderella, The Jungle Book (again), Beauty and the Beast, Dumbo, Aladdin, The Lion King, The Lady and the Tramp, Mulan, Pinocchio, The Little Mermaid… the list goes on. And it seems like DreamWorks has been impressed by that animation-to-live-action business model, as they’re teaming up with Universal Pictures to bring a live-action remake of their 2010 animated feature How to Train Your Dragon to theatres on June 13, 2025. In anticipation of this release, we here at JoBlo have decided to put together a list of Everything We Know About the live-action How to Train Your Dragon… and here we go:

The Direct got to sit down with Gerard Butler as he was promoting his new film, Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, and the subject of How to Train Your Dragon had been brought up. Butler will be starring in the new live-action version, which has the original’s director, Dean DeBlois, returning to the Viking world. When The Direct asked what Butler could tease, the action star said that this film will be a lot scarier than the original.
Butler expounded,
I made three of those movies over many years, and I always wondered, I love the animated movies, but I always wondered, ‘God, what if this was real? What if we were really there, real people, real dragons?’ And we had a chance to do that, to make it real. And I think that is one of the main differences. It's been a couple of months since our first look at the live-action How To Train Your Dragon movie was released and a new minute-long trailer has just dropped (via Toonado.com) revealing more never-before-seen footage.
Not only are there some obvious improvements to the visuals (Toothless somehow looks even better than he did the first time), but we also get to see the dragons Stormfly and Hookfang and more of Hiccup's first meeting with his future best pal.
Even if How To Train Your Dragon is simply a shot-for-shot remake of the DreamWorks Animation classic, everything we see here looks suitably epic and there's a good chance this ends up being one of 2025's biggest hits.
Describing the movie as "a game-changer," Gerard Butler recently teased, "I can say it has just been a joy to be a part of these movies, to tell those stories, and see them being received by the public.

As two of this year's most highly anticipated live-action adaptations of animated classics, the pressure is on Snow White and How to Train Your Dragon to deliver on fan expectations.
The former has been mired in controversy and backlash from those unhappy with certain modernisations, while much has been said about the latter likely being a shot-for-shot remake of the original DreamWorks movie.
Whether any of that will make a dent in each release's respective box office takings remains to be seen, of course, but those are issues which could derail both movies, particularly if reviews are negative.
Time will tell but, in the meantime, we have a new look at Snow White and How to Train Your Dragon courtesy of USA Today (via Toonado.com).

Gerard Butler is busier than ever right now, and one of his highly anticipated movies is the upcoming live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon. While there are some fans of the animated franchise that have questioned why a live-action adaptation is needed, Butler really cannot wait for audiences to see the end result. In a recent interview, he hyped up the “incredible” movie, suggesting that fans may well be happier with the film than they expect to be.
How to Train Your Dragon was originally released in 2010 and the Dreamworks Animation movie did not take long to find its audience, resulting in a $494 worldwide gross. Seemingly following in the footsteps of Disney, whose live-action remakes are now more frequent than their animated movies, DreamWorks has decided to give us a live-action remake of one of its most famous series, How to Train Your Dragon. The live-action remake of the first movie is scheduled for a 2025 release, and we have recently received some new footage from the movie.
And while we could debate the purpose of such a live-action remake, it is happening, and there is not much we can do there.
The first visuals look pretty nice if you ask us, and we are sure that the film will retain some of the charm of the original animated series.
But, as you might have assumed, there are also some controversies surrounding the upcoming movie and the biggest one at this point is the casting of Nico Parker, daughter of actress Thandiwe Newton and filmmaker Ol Parker,...

Following yesterday's long-awaited trailer debut, Universal Pictures has released a behind-the-scenes featurette for the live-action How to Train Your Dragon movie (via Toonado.com).
As well as teasing lots of new footage from the movie, we get our first proper look at Nico Parker's Astrid, Gabriel Howell as Snotlout, and Julian Dennison as Fishlegs. It’s only a minute long but the first How to Train Your Dragon teaser trailer confirms so many elements about the live-action version. Toothless is basically Toothless from the animated films, Hiccup looks like fans expect him to, and even the finger placement as Hiccup touches Toothless for the first time matches the animated original. (A YouTube commenter pointed that out.)
Mason Thames (The Black Phone), Nico Parker (The Last of Us), Nick Frost (Truth Seekers), Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2), and Gabriel Howell (Bodies) star. The cast also includes Bronwyn James (Wicked), Harry Trevaldwyn (Smothered), Ruth Codd (The Midnight Club), Peter Serafinowicz (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Murray McArthur (Game of Thrones).
Gerard Butler reprises his role as Chief Stoick the Vast from the animated films for the live-action adaptation.

"When you carry this axe, you carry all of us with you." But why hurt the dragons? Universal Pictures has unveiled an official teaser trailer for their live-action How to Train Your Dragon movie, following the Disney trend of turning their animated classics into "live-action" movies that feature tons of animated CGI in them anyway. The original Httyd movie opened in theaters in 2010, and it was such a huge success for DreamWorks Animation they went on to make two more sequels, with the grand finale How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World landing in 2019. The story follows a young Viking boy as he aspires to help hunt dragons, and how he becomes unexpectedly a friend of a young dragon he decides to name Toothless. The official trailer for How to Train Your Dragon has been released, and it looks exactly how we imagined it, for better or worse. While many fans of the animated franchise were excited to see a live-action version on the big screen, some remained skeptical of the need for its existence. The new footage reveals a strikingly faithful adaptation, but How to Train Your Dragon may have a hard time convincing those who were wary of a shot-for-shot remake.
Universal Pictures released the trailer (see below) for How to Train Your Dragon, revealing the beloved dragon Toothless and his human companion Hiccup, played by Mason Thames (The Black Phone). The footage starts with Gerard Butler as his father, Stoick, who reprises his voice role from the original animated movies, under heavy makeup and armor. His resemblance to his animated counterpart is striking, as well as Toothless and Hiccup's identical appearances.

Universal Pictures seems to have dropped the ball on How to Train Your Dragon's marketing campaign. For whatever reason, the teaser trailer started playing in select theaters this past weekend, resulting in our first look at the movie coming in the form of blurry social media screenshots.
Snippets of footage have since found their way online, but the trailer has now leaked in its entirety...in HD! We're not sure how this happened, but it presumably means the official version is mere hours away.
There's not too much to discuss here as the focus is primarily on early scenes from the movie as Hiccup's father, Stoick, encourages him to kill dragons like the rest of his fellow Vikings. However, when he encounters Toothless, a bond is formed during a moment that recreates an iconic scene from the 2010 animated feature.
As cool as it is to see this come to life,...

Update: You can now view the HD version of the How to Train Your Dragon trailer by clicking here.
The first teaser trailer for the live-action version of DreamWorks Animation's How to Train Your Dragon is currently playing in select theaters. While an online release is likely imminent, over a minute of footage has just leaked online.
It will likely be pulled down quickly but features the fateful first meeting between Hiccup and Toothless and a first look at Gerard Butler reprising his role from the animated movie as Stoick.
It doesn't appear as if the movie will veer too far away from what we saw in 2010; for some, that will come as good news and, for others, this will be 2019's The Lion King all over again.
Overall, though, the visuals look impressive and Toothless is essentially a slightly more refined version of his cartoon counterpart.
