I lived through the uncertainty of Y2K and have vivid memories of the ordeal. The anxiety was real. People were convinced that the sky was falling. Thankfully, the sky did not fall. But what if it actually did? That’s the question the #1 movie on Max today posits. Y2K imagines an alternate New Year’s Eve 1999 where instead of business as usual, technology revolted.
That sounds like such a promising premise. You get a bit of (ultra-late) ‘90s nostalgia and a major cultural milestone reimagined with dire consequences. Unfortunately, the execution of this period piece is lacking. Many critics called attention to the film’s tonal inconsistencies and said that a lot of the jokes don’t quite land.
Here’s a bit more context on the setup for this A24 Horror thriller on Max:

WB streaming service Max currently has an exclusivity deal with A24 that guarantees all their movies will appear on that service first (and HBO). The next to roll out is Y2K, the period piece comedy-thriller from late last year. Y2K takes place in the time frame that its title implies, and is initially about two boys who crash a rager, unaware that everything else is about to crash. One came with the goal of finally asking out his crush, but they both have their eyes on the giant bottles of booze. They don’t get very far with either goal before the Y2K bug actually hits, and turns out to be as bad as everyone says it is, only worse. No one predicted that VCRs were going to come alive and Tamagotchis were going to turn murderous, but hindsight is 20/20….or 2000 in this case. With its action-oriented,...

The film, which was written by Mooney and Evan Winter — and directed by Mooney — and stars Jaeden Martell, Rachel Zegler, Julian Dennison, The Kid Laroi, and Fred Durst. According to a new press release from A24, Y2K will make its streaming debut on Max on Friday, April 4, 2025. The film will also debut on HBO (the cable channel/network) on Saturday, April 5 at 8:00pm Et. The film was produced by Evan Winter, Jonah Hill, Matt Dines, Alison Goodwin, Chris Storer, and Cooper Wehde.

Rising star Tate McRae is dominating the music industry with her upbeat alternative pop songs and onscreen charisma, making any man fall in love with her. For a woman so talented and stunning, it’s a massive shame for anyone who cheats on her—especially after a netizen accused her ex-boyfriend, Columbus Blue Jackets center Cole Sillinger, of infidelity.

The singer notably dated the professional hockey player in the summer of 2021 before calling it quits in early 2023. They met through mutual friends, but it is also worth noting that Sillinger had a huge celebrity crush on her.

The cover of Tate McRae’s third album shows the pop spitfire lounging on a floor, her back turned to the viewer as she gazes at a floor-to-ceiling portrait of herself in profile — head thrown back, eyes closed, holding a facial expression that seems like she’s on the verge of doing something. That sort of self-scrutiny is common for the 21-year-old singer, who recently told Rolling Stone that she has a “never-ending loop” of thoughts on her self, her success, and her satisfaction. Her perpetual-motion mind has made her...

Tate McRae has had to shift her mentality around her new album, So Close to What, after several of the songs’ demos leaked online. During a Spotify event Tuesday night, the pop star opened up about being “devastated” after her songs leaked earlier this year.
“Unfortunately, a lot of the album got leaked, which was a fucking bummer,” she said. “And I think obviously that makes you look at the project differently… I was just so devastated because I’m like, ‘There’s nothing I can do about this. The whole project is online.

A24 delivered the “disaster comedy of the millennium” when their film Y2K (you can read our review at This Link) reached theatres on December 6th – but not a lot of movie-goers turned out to see it. The movie has only made $4 million at the domestic box office. Maybe it will be better luck when viewers have the option to watch the movie in the comfort of their own homes… and that option is arriving very soon. Next week, in fact. Y2K is set to receive a digital release on December 24th and is available for pre-order on Apple TV and Amazon.
The feature directorial debut of Saturday Night Live veteran Kyle Mooney, who also crafted the screenplay with Evan Winter, Y2K has the following official logline: On the last night of 1999, two high school juniors crash a New Years Eve party, only to find themselves fighting for their lives in this dial-up disaster comedy.

In Y2K, a group of teenagers ring in the year 2000 with a New Year's Eve party. However, their plans change when the night ushers in a robot apocalypse, forcing the teenagers to work together to survive the human-slaying technology surrounding them. The film, which is distributed by A24, stars breakout actors including Rachel Zegler, Julian Dennison, and The Kid Laroi, as well as Alicia Silverstone.
As fun as the film sounds, it's also alarming from an industry perspective. Y2K blends horror and comedy, which is a genre mix audiences have been seeing far too often recently. The two genres feel like they should work well together, but with each new movie, the blend becomes a little bit more boring. Y2K is indicative of a need to slow down with horror-comedies before audiences become disinterested entirely.

“Let’s do this shit.”
Kyle Mooney (“SNL”) is so personally invested in supporting his new A24 film “Y2K,” he’s taking viewers on a journey back to his life in 1999. A typical Mooney day back then included hacky sack, skateboarding, chillin’ at the mall, and downing some Mickey’s Big Mouth — if he could get someone of age to buy it for him, that is.
In addition to the meta day-in-the-life video, in which ’99 Mooney shares his desperation to have a viral moment in 2024, “Y2K” now includes a functional “microsite” in promotion for the film. Check it out here.
On the very-1999-looking website designed to look like your PC desktop, visitors can set an Away Message, burn a CD of ’90s jams, and talk about the old days with an AI chat bot.
The chat bot lives in 1999, but is very much built by 2024 technology — it’s a trip.

"Think they'll still do graduation?" A24 has revealed a second trailer for Y2K, a 1999 party comedy marking the feature directorial debut of comedian Kyle Mooney. The second trailer for A24’s Y2K features a remixed Bill Clinton playing over a 1990s montage of dial-up internet and panic at a 1999 New Year’s Eve party.
“Someone’s on the net,” a panicked Rachel Zegler says at the beginning of the trailer, released Wednesday.
The clip reveals few other details about the upcoming film, which will be the directorial debut of Saturday Night Live‘s Kyle Mooney.
The movie hits theaters Dec. 6, and centers on two high school juniors who find themselves fending for their lives after crashing a New Year’s Eve shindig on the last night of the 20th century. Turn-of-the-century technology appears to take over the party, turning the night potentially deadly, with a computer aboard a remote control car chasing party guests around a living room.

Remember the paranoia that spread throughout the late ’90s when people believed the world’s entire computer infrastructure would crash once the clock struck midnight on the year 2000? Misinformation around the potential bug caused many to go into panic mode, purchasing bulk supplies of food and water, as well as backup generators, and even withdrawing large sums of money from the bank. Thankfully, no such tech failure came to pass, nuclear warheads were kept in their silos, and the world kept spinning. Nevertheless, for writer/director Kyle Mooney, this potential phenomena has clearly stayed with him, inspiring his directorial debut, “Y2K.”
Set on New Year’s Eve 1999, the sci-fi comedy depicts an alt history in which the Y2K disaster actually did come to pass, albeit in a more grandiose fashion. Rather than simply shutting down the world’s technology, Mooney and co-writer Evan Winter imagine a world in which...

Tate McRae hit the black carpet in a lacy look while arriving at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards held at Ubs Arena on Wednesday (September 11) in Elmont, New York.
The 21-year-old entertainer wore a very similar look to what Britney Spears also wore over 20 years ago!
Britney rocked the ensemble while attending the 2001 MTV VMAs, which is when she hit the stage for her iconic “I’m a Slave 4 U” performance, where she carried a python on stage.
Also seen walking the carpet at the VMAs this year was Tate‘s boyfriend The Kid Laroi. While they didn’t hit the carpet together, they were seated next to each other inside the awards show.
This year, Tate is nominated twice – for Best Pop and Best Chorography for Sean Bankhead for her “Greedy” video.

Tate McRae had more than one surprise in store for fans at her Madison Square Garden concert, one of which included her boyfriend The Kid Laroi.
The 21-year-old couple took to the stage on Thursday (August 22) to perform a duet of The Kid Laroi’s song “Without You” in New York City.
When Tate introduced her boyfriend, The Kid Laroi immediately pulled her in close and kissed her, which of course made the crowd go crazy! They sat on the steps of the stage and then sang Laroi’s song together in an acoustic and stripped-back style.
That wasn’t the only thing Tate had in store though, she also previewed a brand new song!
She even took to TikTok to announce the surprise performance, “Premiered a new song at my headline sold out Msg show last night.”
Later that night, the couple were spotted out together and looking to celebrate their successful performances.

Expect nostalgic music from 1999 like "Genie in a Bottle" and "Smooth" to accompany this alternate-history horror comedy.

Tate McRae and The Kid Laroi were seen holding hands on their way to a dinner date.
The 21-year-old singers were spotted on Tuesday (August 20) out to dinner in New York City.
Tate and The Kid Laroi initially sparked dating rumors earlier this year. From sneaky hand-holding pictures to cute, but subtle selfies, The Kid Laroi even went as far as to talk about Tate at one of his concerts.
In April, he told fans at a show in Dublin, Ireland that his girlfriend was in the crowd that night while Tate watched the concert from side stage.
It wasn’t until July that the couple made it Instagram official after months of speculation. The Kid Laroi posted a photo to his story of the two kissing for Tate’s birthday, captioning it, “Happy 21st birthday. You make me better! I love yoooouuu @tatemcrae.”

In the new horror-comedy film “Y2K,” directed by Kyle Mooney in his feature film debut, high school students find themselves confronting a peculiar threat at a notorious New Year’s Eve party. As the clock ticks down to the year 2000, electronics like Tamagotchis and cell phones suddenly turn against the partygoers. Rachel Zegler and Jaeden Martell lead an ensemble cast playing two juniors who must battle rogue devices to survive the night.
The film centers on Zegler and Martell’s characters crashing a wild end-of-the-millennium bash. However, the party takes a dangerous turn when everyday electronics like toys and phones start malfunctioning in disturbing ways. “A Tamagotchi just drilled through a chick’s head!” one character remarks in the trailer, hinting at the mayhem that ensues. The students find themselves facing down a technological onslaught with no explanation for the devices’ newfound aggressiveness.

"Bye bye, human race." A24 has unveiled an official trailer for Y2K, a big party comedy marking the feature directorial debut of comedian Kyle Mooney. It's ready for release in theaters in December just before New Years at the end of this year. It premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival to good reviews along with some negative ones, too. The night gets even crazier than they could have ever dreamed when the clock strikes midnight. The hilarious Nye horror comedy stars Rachel Zegler, Jaeden Martell, Julian Dennison, and Alicia Silverstone, also featuring The Kid Laroi, Tim Heidecker, and Fred Durst. Reminds me of Bodies Bodies Bodies at first glance, though it also looks like it'll be as crazy as This is The End. Reviews state "Y2K is...

Tate McRae and The Kid Laroi‘s romance is going strong!
The 20-year-old singers were seen holding hands while leaving a dinner date at E Baldi restaurant on Wednesday night (March 13) in Beverly Hills.
Tate looked chic in an oversized black blazer and black boots, while The Kid Laroi kept is casual in baggy jeans, a sweater, red hat and black Converse. They were also both seen using the same phone case, which is the “lip case” from Hailey Bieber‘s Rhode Skin brand.
Fans also took notice of the shirt that Tate was wearing under her blazer as a striped button up that she wore in a past Instagram post, which appears to be the same shirt The Kid Laroi was wearing before while two were reportedly on vacation together in Mexico at the beginning of this year.
That is when dating rumors surrounding the young singers first sparked!
