Over the last several years, there have been a lot of headlines about celebrities winding up in prison. After all, fans want to know about R. Kelly's life behind bars, whether Diddy will spend the rest of his life in prison, and about how Eddie Murphy helped Nelson Mandela when he was serving time. If that wasn't enough, there have been many reality show stars who've wound up in prison too, including Julie Chrisley, whose resentencing got a lot of attention, and Jen Shah, whose sentence was reduced twice.
Reality show fans can also watch shows like Love After Lockup and wonder how prisoners find mates and about the couples' dramatic relationships. Love After Lockup: Life After Lockup fans also get to read a lot of fascinating headlines related to the show. For example, there was the time that Douglas Howard won $45,000 after he went back to prison for a disturbing crime.

The newest card in the Pokmon Trading Card Game that was just revealed features the fan-favorite icon of the franchise, Pikachu, but eagle-eyed fans will notice a few other Pokmon making cameos behind the sparking Pikachu in the front. The card will be released later this month exclusively in China as part of a promotional box.
The special Pikachu promo card, shared on Instagram by pokemontcgsaver, is a full-card illustration that shows a dynamic sparking Pikachu at the center. The card won't be sought after for its power, as it only has 70 Hp and an attack that only does 10 points of damage to a random opposing Pokmon card. However, the stunning, exclusive art makes it a must-have for many collectors.

Netflix has become known for its original content, especially branching into the world of reality TV and documentaries. Their reality dating series like Too Hot To Handle and Perfect Match take social media by storm whenever a new season drops. Real-estate voyeurism and occu-soap drama can be found in shows like Owning Manhattan and Buying Beverly Hills. Documentary series that follow the lives of individuals in their pursuit of greatness can be found on shows like Last Chance U and Cheer. Cheer follows Navarro College cheerleaders as they train to compete for a coveted national title in Daytona Beach, Florida. Cheer also inadvertently captured the scandal of cheerleader Jerry Harris, who was investigated by the FBI for allegedly soliciting minors for sex amid his rising popularity on the series.

Are you optimistic about the Dallas Cowboys 2024 NFL season? Well, recent history suggests you probably shouldn’t be. (Giants fan over here.) But there is something exciting leading in to the summer’s training camp: a new cheerleading docuseries from director Greg Whiteley, the man behind Netflix’s “Cheer” and “Last Chance U.”
“America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders,” a collection of seven 45-minute episodes, will follow the 2023-24 squad (last season’s team) from start to finish — meaning from their auditions to the team’s inevitable late-regular-season or early-post-season collapse. The cheerleaders are led by their longtime director Kelli Finglass.
The docuseries, which is definitely not “Cheer” Season 3 (except it definitely should be), premieres on June 20 on Netflix.
Whiteley executive produces alongside Adam Leibowitz for One Potato Productions; Andrew Fried and Dane Lillegard of Boardwalk Pictures and Ross M. Dinerstein and Rebecca Evans of Campfire Studios also executive produce for their respective companies.

Greg Whiteley has a new sports docuseries at Netflix that really isn’t new at all. The seven-episode (at 45-minutes apiece) “America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders” will premiere this summer on Netflix. The streamer first announced the series on Thursday, when it also put out a teaser (below).
Greg Whiteley… Netflix… cheerleading docuseries… Why does this all sound so familiar? Oh yeah, it’s because Whiteley is the guy behind Netflix’s two-season docuseries “Cheer” (as well as the equally excellent five-season “Last Chance U”).
Fans of “Cheer” have been not-so-patiently waiting for a third season, so… isn’t this just that? Why not call “America’s Sweethearts” what it really is: “Cheer” Season 3. That’s what we want.
There’s plenty of precedent here. While “Cheer” Seasons 1 and 2 focused on competitive collegiate cheerleading (mostly) at Navarro College (also in Texas!), Whiteley’s precursor “Last Chance U” not only changed schools — it changed sports.

Monica Aldama‘s son Austin Aldama, has been arrested on child pornography charges.
You may recognize the 51-year-old as the coach of the co-ed cheerleading team at Navarro College, which was the subject of a Netflix TV docu-series titled Cheer.
Aldama‘s son, who is 27 years old, was arrested for 10 counts of possession of pornographic images of children, TMZ is reporting. He was booked, but has been released on bond under stipulations including random drug testing, random searches to his electronic devices, and prohibited viewing of any X-rated material.
Prosecutors are saying they have evidence of materials featuring children under the age of 10 in video files.
This is not the first child pornography case to hit the Navarro area. Jerry Harris, who starred in Cheer, was sentenced to 12 years in prison for child pornography.

“Wait, the name at the top of this website reads ‘Den of Geek’ and now they’re talking about sports? Don’t they know I’m gangly and uncoordinated?”
Yes, dear reader, we know that. Truth is, we’re all gangly and uncoordinated as well. But that doesn’t mean that we geeks can’t occasionally get together and enjoy the dramatic majesty of competitive sports. Sports documentaries have always been a part of the entertainment ecosystem. Of late, however, it seems as though there’s more of them for the casual sports fan or even fully sports-phobic TV-watcher to enjoy.
ESPN’s “30 for 30” sports documentary initiative kicked off a new era of TV sports documentaries in 2009. And since then, the offerings have only gotten better. With streamers like Netflix fully into the fray there have never been as many compelling sports stories being told as there is right now.

After Lane told Aldama about the alleged assault, she said the coach told her, “Let’s not make this a big deal. I want the best for you and I will help you cheer wherever you want.”

Julie Chrisley reported to Federal Medical Center Lexington in Kentucky on Tuesday, January 17, to begin her seven-year prison sentence, but she isn’t the only reality star incarcerated at the facility. Ex-cheerleader Jerry Harris, who appeared in the Emmy-winning Netflix docuseries Cheer, was locked up at Federal Medical Center Lexington last August after being sentenced to 12 years in prison for soliciting sex and pornographic photos and videos from minors. However, Julie and Harris are unlikely to cross paths while in prison as male and female inmates are kept separate. Chrisley resides with her fellow female inmates at Federal Medical Center Lexington, while Harris stays with the male inmates at Fmc Lexington Camp, located adjacent to the main institution. Other notable names who have served time at Fmc Lexington include the former mayor of Birmingham, Alabama, Larry Langford; guitarist and co-founder of the Detroit rock band MC5, Wayne Kramer; political activist...

With two of last year’s nominees in the Emmys unstructured reality category not eligible this year, the Television Academy was able to infuse it with new blood in the form of Netflix’s “Love on the Spectrum U.S.” and Bravo’s “Below Deck Mediterranean” scoring first-ever nominations.

Once again, “Stranger Things” took over Variety’s Trending TV chart for the week of July 4 to 10, earning another 672,500 engagements following the two-part Season 4 finale drop on July 1. Although the series was down 48 week-over-week, this marks the sixth week the show has earned the No. 1 spot. It has now surpassed another Netflix entry, “Heartstopper,” which trended in the top spot for five straight weeks earlier this year.
Unlike “Heartstopper,” the “Stranger Things” run is not consecutive. The series fell to second place from June 13 to 19, when “Game of Thrones” took over the top spot following the announcement of a Jon Snow spinoff. The show reclaimed the No. 1 position the following week, where it has remained ever since.
The sci-fi smash continues to be a hit with viewers in part because of the introduction of new fan-favorite characters and key music choices, which have also led to increased popularity for performers like Kate Bush and Metallica.

By now, we all know, don’t we, that Stranger Things’ Henry Creel had a beyond hard time of it, what with being so very different that he was remanded to Dr. Brenner’s care and branded “One.” But what we could only guess at — until this very moment — was how tricky a proposition playing Vecna was for Jamie Campbell Bower, especially when natured called.
The procedure that ensued was, let’s be real, “very complicated!” he tells TVLine with a laugh. “The top half [of the costume] is glued [to my body], and then the bottom half is like these trousers, and there’s a flap.

“We had no idea when we were filming this that it would be so big,” reveals Monica Aldama (“Cheer”), the coach of the Navarro College cheer team and the star of Netflix’s docuseries. “It is cheerleading, and cheerleading does have a stereotype, so we weren’t really prepared for what was to come.” Aldama joins Gold Derby as part of our Meet the Experts: Reality TV panel (watch the exclusive video interview above).
The inspirational coach continues, “Our lives kind of went from zero to 100 really fast [after Season 1]. We were just taking it in, all of these wonderful opportunities came our way. But obviously with something this big comes some devastating things as well. So the past two years have been, if you’ve watched Season 2, lots of ups and downs and difficult times.”

The 22-year-old reality star and cheerleader entered his pleas at a remote U.S. District Court hearing Thursday, Feb. 10, according to a plea agreement obtained by E! News. Harris admitted to two of the counts in a federal indictment—receiving child pornography and engaging in interstate travel for the purpose of engaging in illicit sexual act. Under the plea agreement, prosecutors will ask for the remaining charges to be dismissed after sentencing. "Jerry Harris has entered a plea of guilty today because he wishes to take...

“Cheer” star Jeremiah “Jerry” Harris pleaded guilty on Thursday in his child pornography and sexual exploitation case, according to federal prosecutors.
Harris pleaded guilty to two counts in the criminal indictment – receipt of child pornography and traveling with the intent to engage in illicit sexual conduct. His sentencing is set for June 28, the U.S. Attorney’s Office Northern District of Illinois said.
Harris, who rose to national prominence on the Netflix docuseries “Cheer,” was arrested by the FBI in September 2020, after a pair of twin brothers accused him of sending one of them sexually explicit messages and requesting nude images over social media starting when they were 13 years old.
The lawyer representing the two boys said their mother was key to the case.

It’s easy to say that, in a sports documentary series like “Cheer,” winning doesn’t matter as much. Regardless of the outcome of a particular season, it’s about getting to know the people participating in that pursuit along the way. But after six seasons involved with making different versions of the Netflix doc series “Last Chance U,” director Greg Whiteley soon discovered that the world of cheerleading made for even more intense pressure on how the team at Navarro College finished any given spring.
It’s something that he was especially aware of going into the show’s Season 2.
“We hit upon a formula in ‘Last Chance U’ that was helpful. The season could go into the tank from the team standpoint, but you still had individual championships. If they were to go on to get a D1 scholarship, that was a very pleasing arc to demonstrate. But...

Photo: Cheer Season 2 ‘Cheer’ season 2 is doing what many other shows cannot, evolving without completely reinventing. Perhaps this is thanks to the competitive nature and premise of the show, a drama series about competitive cheerleading, and the amount of surprising skill and dedication that goes into perfecting the sport. And yes, the characters and creators classify the bone-tiring, technique-dependent, and highly competitive actions of the protagonist cheerleaders as a sport. Especially with new prestigious spots opening up on the team, the fighting for said coveted spot gets fiercer as the season progresses. The production team has to not only consider this but also find an accurate and realistic way to capture the past two years of the careers and lives of the different rosters. The new roster includes Jerry Harris, Lexi Brumback, Gabi Butler, Monica Aldama and Morgan Simianer who are all various athletes competing on the show. Related article:...

Rival Texas schools Navarro College and Trinity Valley Community College each were paid $30,000 for their participation in the second season of Netflix’s “Cheer,” a price that was set in the initial location fee agreement between Navarro and the show’s production company before “Cheer” became a smash-hit streaming sensation.
As first reported by Variety‘s sister site Sportico, “In 2018, Navarro signed a deal with a production company in which the school agreed to be paid $30,000 for the rights to film a season of a then-untitled cheerleading documentary, according to a copy of the rights agreement obtained by Sportico.”
The pact has a built-in exclusive option for “Cheer” producers to renew at the same $30,000 fee each year for five additional academic years, giving the production company “exclusive rights to film and exploit the Cheerleading Athletics as part of the Series” during the contract’s term period.

Raising awareness. Netflix's 2020 hit series Cheer threw a community college cheerleading team into the limelight, making stars out of fan-favorites like the dedicated underdog Morgan Simianer, tumbling queen Lexi Brumback and perhaps most of all, the bubbly Jerry Harris. The Navarro College cheerleader was notorious for his over-the-top and encouraging "mat talk," but everything changed in September 2020 when Jerry was arrested and charged with production of child pornography. Now, it's all playing out during Cheer's recently released second season—a decision that had to have been difficult for producers to make, although the way Morgan sees...

A far less interesting version of “Cheer” Season 2 would have ignored how much of a phenomenon the show immediately became upon its January 2020 debut. Weeks before the pandemic brought most of the world to an unsettling halt, Netflix’s docuseries was an unavoidable smash hit, making overnight celebrities of its Texan cheerleader subjects whether they wanted the spotlight or not. They went on “Ellen,” “Dancing with the Stars,” and the Oscars red carpet. They became Instagram influencers and TikTok stars. They became characters both relatable and aspirational for millions of viewers across the world who suddenly felt incredibly invested in the results of a cheerleading competition. In its second season, “Cheer” could’ve just followed that story all over again, yielding decent results. It could’ve gone the “Tiger King 2” route, only briefly acknowledging the series’ impact before reverting back to old storytelling habits. Instead, both by choice and by wild circumstance,...

After two long years, Netflix's Cheer is back with more stunts, drama, and a new competitor. On Tuesday, the streamer casually dropped a trailer for the second season, which officially debuts on Jan. 12, 2022. By the looks of it, the upcoming nine episodes give us an update on Navarro Cheer - and its head coach Monica Aldama and star members like Gabi Butler, LA'Darius Marshall, Lexi Brumback, and Morgan Simianer - and how they've dealt with their newfound fame, Covid-19-related challenges, and a rival team fighting just as hard for the Daytona championship.
The trailer also offers a look at how the team is moving forward after a serious allegation against former team member and Cheer breakout star Jerry Harris. Harris was arrested in September 2020 on a federal child pornography charge and faces seven additional counts of child sexual exploitation and abuse.

Netflix is bringing Cheer back for a second season.
The streamer announced Monday that a surprise second season would arrive Wednesday, January 12.
While the series was a hit, a renewal was not guaranteed after it emerged that Jerry Harris, a star of the first season, was arrested on federal sexual misconduct charges in September 2020.
The first trailer for the new season confirms that the series will not be sidestepping the controversy.
“I can’t even, like, process it right now,” coach Monica Aldama says in the first footage.
Cheer director Greg Whiteley said in a press release that the series will touch upon many stories this time.
“I am a huge believer in the power of stories and telling them honestly,” he shared in a statement.
“I believe the story is going to ultimately be the best version of itself when you are honoring what is true, and you’re not running from it.

Netflix‘s Emmy-winning docuseries Cheer is returning for a second season on January 12. The series, which premiered in January 2020, follows the cheerleading team and staff from Navarro College in Texas. The first season focused on coach Monica Aldama and members of her team, in particular, Lexi Brumback, La’Darius Marshall, Morgan Simianer, Jerry Harris, and Gabi Butler. As seen in the trailer (watch below), the new season will cover Harris’s arrest and its effect on the team. Last year, Harris was arrested for multiple federal sexual misconduct charges, including soliciting child pornography. Season 2 will confront these allegations, including interviews with the brothers who first came forward about Harris. The series will again focus on Aldama, Brumback, Butler, Marshall, and Simianer, as well as new Navarro competitors. In addition, attention will be given to Navarro arch-rival Trinity Valley Community College, highlighting their coach, Vontae Johnson, and his assistant coach Khris Franklin and members of that squad.
